The preseason football polls don't have a lot of love for the ACC; Kyle Guy returns to UVa basketball.
Team USA Men's and Women's basketball take home the gold! The competition was by no means easy and they really had to earn it. The Men's team played tough games against Serbia and France and the Women's went down to the wire in their game against France. The rest of the world is definitely catching up, but the US remain supreme in the year 2024. In the other news, Kyle Guy retires and Lauri Markkanen signs a big extension with Utah on August 7, making him untradeable this season. Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum has made no secret throughout his career of his admiration, even idolization, of Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. It's a topic that has come up a lot during the playoffs, and Boston's run to the Finals, given gestures like Tatum wearing a "24" wristband in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. It's put some Lakers fans in a weird position, one where they're actually pulling for a Celtic, and even the Celtics, in the Finals against Golden State. Is that against the rules? What are the rules, anyway? The Lakers are already on to the business of building out next season's roster. It's a given they'll have a lot of slots to fill via free agency, and not a lot money to do it. So journeymen like Langston Galloway, Kyle Guy, Alize Johnson, and D.J. Wilson —all of whom were in El Segundo this week—represent the kind of player to which the Lakers will have access. Finding the right combination of limited players that can be put in the best position to succeed while also fitting in with the team's stars (if necessary) won't be easy. But that's the challenge. How likely is it Rob Pelinka and crew will find the right mix? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers are auditioning free agents. What it means, in the micro and the macro. Jim Nantz said, "It's the all-time turnaround title!". The University of Virginia basketball program went from the wrong side of history to cutting down the nets a year later. We continue with our March Madness-inspired Rebound series of the Shadows Podcast with Kyle Guy! Kyle was the 2016 Mr. Basketball in Indiana, McDonald's All-American, 2-time First-Team All-ACC, 2-time Third Team-All American, 2018 ACC Tournament MVP, 2019 Final Four MOP, National Champion at the University of Virginia, and currently a member of the first-place Miami Heat. This episode takes us through the recruitment process and how even though he dreamed of playing basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers, he ultimately ended up at Virginia. How did it feel the first time he suited up for the Cavaliers? Why did he consider transferring after his freshman year? The Virginia basketball team was #1 in the country and coming off an ACC Tournament title. They went into the 2018 NCAA Tournament as solid favorites to cut down the nets at the end of the season. Then history was made on March 16, 2018, in Charlotte, North Carolina, when the unthinkable happened. The #16 seeded UMBC Retrievers shocked the sports world and defeated Kyle and the #1 seed Virginia Cavaliers for the first time ever. What was their mindset before the game? When did he get an uneasy sense that that wasn't their night? What was the leadership lesson Coach Tony Bennett taught him that night? Listen to Kyle explain how the team had to be escorted into the hotel due to death threats. “If you learn to use it right, the adversity, it will buy you a ticket to a place you could not have gone any other way.” Tony Bennett Virginia used that loss as motivation and made a dramatic run through the 2019 NCAA Tournament en route to a national title. Listen to Kyle walk us through being faced with a familiar deficit a year later against a #16 Gardner Webb. He also talks about the pressure of hitting clutch shots and free throws in three of the greatest college basketball games ever played: The Regional Finals against Purdue, the National Semifinals against Auburn, and the National Championship against Texas Tech. We at the Field of 68 media network are thrilled to announce the launch of a new series called 68 Shining Moments. We've spent the last four months amassing interviews with the people that lived the greatest, the most memorable moments in the history of the NCAA tournament. We went straight to the horse's mouth to find out when T.J. Sorrentine realized that he had hit that shot from the parking lot, and if Ali Farohkmanesh was really serious with that shot. We talked to Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome from Virginia. We sat with Danny Manning, and Kris Jenkins, and Ryan Arcidiacono, and Keith Smart, and Dunk City. If there was a memorable moment in the NCAA tournament, chances are, we talked to them.
