Arne Slot, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo reflect on Liverpool's 1-0 win at Sunderland after Virgil van Dijk's header cut the gap to fifth-placed Chelsea to two points. In this episode of The Reaction presented by Mark Benstead, we also hear from former Reds Phil Thompson, Jan Molby and Jay Spearing, as well as our fan panel: Abigail Rudkin, Aizaz Sheikh and Joel Richards.
Liverpool delivered a result few expected, and maybe one that says more about their resilience than any recent performance. Dave Davis is joined by David Lynch to dissect a gritty 3 point haul away at Sunderland, their first home defeat of the season. While not a classic in aesthetic terms, the underlying numbers and control told a different story, Liverpool generated enough to win in open play, dominated territory, and restricted chaos in one of the league's toughest away environments. The discussion focuses on the defensive platform that made it possible. Virgil van Dijk produced a captain's performance packed with clearances, aerial dominance, and the decisive goal. Ibrahima Konate matched him duel for duel, handling Sunderland's physical threat superbly. Together, they delivered a throwback centre back masterclass. Further forward, Florian Wirtz continued his rapid Premier League adaptation. Despite Liverpool failing to score from open play, his technical quality, chance creation, and composure marked him as the standout attacking spark. Also covered: • Sunderland tactical approach vs Liverpool control • Set piece improvement, coincidence or coaching impact? • Winning without fluency, is it progress? • Defensive structure vs chaos football A performance that will not live long in highlight reels, but one that could matter deeply in the season run in. A very enjoyable weekend of football in the Premier League that included comebacks, momentum shifts and late drama and some FPL haulers too in the likes of (substitute) Joao Pedro and the Liverpool pair of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike. Pedro and other Chelsea assets will take on greater appeal should they overturn their Carabao Cup deficit at Arsenal. The team that progresses now has a confirmed Double Gameweek in 26 and that may influence forthcoming moves with both have attractive fixtures this weekend too. But Chelsea were given a big scare against West Ham, The Blues completed one of a number of comebacks this weekend, as did Liverpool against Newcastle and Tottenham showed fight to come back from two down against Manchester City, who slipped further behind Arsenal. Whilst Manchester United let their own two goal advantage slip, but still won, with Bruno Fernandes again returning well for those who captained him, and he's likely to be even more popular this forthcoming weekend. All the games covered as usual and all the key FPL points deliberated. On today's episode of The Transfer Flow, Patrick and Ted run through transfer deadline chaos and a genuinely weird Premier League weekend. We start with the biggest rumours flying around late in the window, including Curtis Jones to Inter (and why stats people have always loved him), Ademola Lookman's move to Atlético, Jean-Philippe Mateta's failed medical, and the increasingly strange career arc of Jhon Durán. From there, we dig into Spurs' comeback draw against Manchester City and why Pep's side still look incapable of controlling games for 90 minutes. We also talk Liverpool's recent surge, whether Florian Wirtz and Xavi Simons have finally cracked the Premier League learning curve, and why City's second-half numbers should worry everyone. We wrap up with Chelsea's worrying trendlines under Liam Rosenior, how much beating Napoli matters for him, and what it would take for Chelsea ownership to make a change. The Reds overcame an uninspiring opening half an hour that saw them fall behind to bounce back emphatically with a 4-1 win over Newcastle in which once again the flourishing partnership of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike came to the fore. Ekitike scored twice and Wirtz added a third before an emotional Ibou Konate honoured his late father with a goal at the Kop end. TLW Editor Dave Usher and Paul Natton look back on an enjoyable night at Anfield and look ahead to what will hopefully be another against City next week.
Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

David Lynch offers a measured but critical breakdown of Liverpool's 1–1 draw with Burnley, separating performance from outcome. While the result deepens the sense of frustration, Lynch explains why this was one of Liverpool's most coherent attacking displays of the season, particularly against a low block. The discussion highlights the growing influence of Florian Wirtz and encouraging contributions from recent signings, while also stressing why missed chances and one defensive lapse were ultimately decisive. A fourth consecutive draw in the league but the unbeaten limp extends to 12 games. In fairness, the performance was much better than the result and there was a lot to like, specifically the performance of Florian Wirtz who was outstanding. Liverpool suffered yet another afternoon of frustration after yet another dramatic finale saw them held to a 2-2 Premier League draw at Fulham on Sunday afternoon. Cody Gakpo thought he had scored an injury-time winner after Florian Wirtz had earlier equalised Harry Wilson's first-half opener only for home substitute Harrison Reed to score a goal-of-the-season contender in the seventh minute of additional time. The result means Arne Slot's side extended their unbeaten run to nine games and remain in fourth place in the hunt for a Champions League qualification berth. Liverpool began the New Year in tedious fashion as they were held to a goalless draw at home to Leeds United on Thursday evening.
