The second season of the Amazon Prime horror anthology series THEM takes place in 1989 and 1991 Los Angeles. LAPD detective Dawn Reeve is investigating a horrifying murder. As she gets closer to the truth, a dark and menacing force threatens her and her family. THEM: The Scare explores themes of fear, dark family secrets and the supernatural. Cinematographer Brendan Uegama was a fan of season 1 of THEM, and got a call from his agent to meet with writer, creator and showrunner Little Marvin about shooting season 2. As an anthology series, each season is its own standalone story. Brendan and Little Marvin's guiding idea was not to make the show look exactly like it took place in the early 1990's, and discussed how to create a feeling of warmth, contrasted with the feeling of terror in the shadows. Brendan decided to use just two lenses and two focal lengths on an ARRI Alexa Mini LF, with everything drastically changing look and tone for episode 7. On Episode 7, “One of Us is Gonna Die Tonight” of THEM: The Scare, Brendan had the opportunity to fully unleash his creativity. Little Marvin decided to direct this episode, and he wanted it to feel utterly horrific, using all of the tools they had at their disposal: lighting, camera effects, and sound. They embraced using as much red lighting as they possibly could throughout the episode. “We had lights in different areas, and we had red from the toy store.” says Brendan. “We had red flares, red cop lights. And Little Marvin's like, 'Man, it would be cool if it was even MORE red.' So I started adding red lights behind all the cop cars and uplighting things, really going heavy with the red. And once we started looking at that, we're like, 'Oh, yeah, now it feels like this is a hellscape.'” Brendan chose to use a 4:3 aspect ratio exclusively for episode 7 to make it feel like the walls are literally closing in. After strictly using the same lenses and focal lengths throughout the series, Brendan changed it up for almost half the episode with a Petzval lens, which creates a unique, swirly bokeh in the center of the frame. Along with the red lighting and aspect ratio shift, it helped create a distorted, nightmarish look. (Hear Robbie Ryan's discussion of using a Petzval lens on Poor Things https://www.camnoir.com/ep248/) Brendan enjoyed the creative opportunity to work on THEM: The Scare. “A huge part of it was the overall excitement to make something great,” he says. “It was exciting to push boundaries and not do formulaic television of any kind.” Find Brendan Uegama: Instagram @brendanuegama_dp Hear our interview with THEM season 1 cinematographer Checco Varese, ASC. https://www.camnoir.com/ep136/ Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras www.hotrodcameras.com Sponsored by Aputure: https://www.aputure.com/ The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Twitter: @ShortEndz

THEM: The Scare makes its way to Prime Video on April 25...and Joe and Eddie are right in the middle of all of the action. This episode of the Red River Horror podcast includes a full preview of the show featuring interviews with actress Deborah Ayorinde and actor Joshua J. Williams. Ayorinde plays Dawn Reeve, one of the only women of color in all of the LAPD's robbery and homicide division. Her son, Kel, is portrayed by Williams. As Dawn gets deeper into a grisly murder case, her family begins to be drug into the fold as well in the worst possible way. The Scare marks the second season in the horror anthology series THEM, written and produced by Little Marvin and available exclusively on Prime Video.
America, anni 50.

Our returning guest Checco Varese, ASC talks to The Cinepod about his latest work on the Amazon Prime show, THEM. As a trained architect, Checco finds some of the same techniques are useful in cinematography, such as understanding the use of space, flow, color, art and construction. Having spatial awareness as a cinematographer helps in understanding physically where the camera can go to allow it enough room during set design. THEM is a period piece about a Black family that moves to an all-white neighborhood in 1950's Southern California, and the terror they experience at the hands of their neighbors and a supernatural force. Checco and showrunner/creator Little Marvin discussed at length how they wanted THEM to look. Little Marvin described it as taking the classic look of a 1950's movie with the camera language of 1970's films like The French Connection and The Deer Hunter, using the tricks of 1990's music videos and the technology of 2021. Checco and fellow DP Xavier Grobet traded off shooting episodes, and they both really enjoyed prepping and collaborating together. They decided to avoid the color red in the set and costume design, so that when red does appear in the show, it's shocking and more frightening. Checco has been the director of photography on a few horror films and series, but he is choosy about what kind of frightening subject he wants to work on, and considers what the subtext is beneath each story. Humanity has always tried to make social injustice or social advancement digestible through a medium, and the horror genre is a great way to push the envelope. Checco sees a common thread in three of the scary projects he's shot. The Strain was about vampire creatures that take over the world, which are a metaphor for outsiders, or even immigrants. IT Chapter Two is a drama about outsiders who have to deal with their past, and THEM is about the horrors of racism, redlining and injustice. You can watch THEM on Amazon Prime. Checco's latest show, Dopesick, a drama series about the opioid crisis, will be streaming on Hulu in October. Write On talks with Little Marvin about his thought-provoking new show and how Lena Waithe boarded the project. "I wrote the pilot… probably three years back. I did the rounds; I got some agents, I did the rounds for a few months, and I got linked up with Miri Yoon, who's an executive producer at Vertigo with Roy Lee, and she asked me… 'Who would you like to sign on as a collaborator?' And I threw out Lena Waithe as kind of a dare almost, just like, 'Let's see what you can do about it…' and like two days later, I was sitting down with Lena." Little Marvin also talked about his experience as a first-time creator and showrunner. "This was not only my first job as a showrunner; this was my first job in television. I didn't come from other people's writers' rooms, I'd never experienced any piece of making a TV show, and then I was the creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer of my first thing… I spent every minute of it white-knuckling it… through the entire experience because what they don't tell you about it is just how much you're going to be doing." Host Hilliard Guess talks with Them: Covenant creator-showrunner-EP-writer Little Marvin about how Amazon’s anthology series explores racism through the lens of horror.
Bing. BADA BINGE!

Then I analyze more in depth how this moment in social media and pop-culture is linked to how we as a society we depict and cast Black people for very dark, grim, and violent storylines. Especially, centering around the trauma and marginalization that Black individuals face daily and calling it entertainment. I hope you all enjoy what I have to talk about for this episode.
