Send us a textIn episode 104, we dive into the 2021 horror film Black as Night. This not-so-unique blend of supernatural horror and social commentary takes us deep into the heart of New Orleans, where a young girl must confront a terrifying vampire threat that lurks in the shadows. We'll discuss the film's themes of colorism, gentrification, and the coming-of-age throughline that has a hard time hitting the mark.  Grab your garlic and stake, and tune in for a deep dive into a film that will leave you questioning what's lurking in the dark.Timestamps Negronomicon: 04:56Crit: 29:17Pause here to avoid plot spoilers!: 34:16 Podcaster's note:A video that Mami Wata Mayowa posted online gave me the language I was looking for when we recorded this episode. The trope with colorism is that dark-skinned women are jealous of light-skinned women. This underlying belief colored the conversation this film was trying to have into a weird coming-of-age story that didn't sit right with me. I have a hard time understanding the perspective of the film has and I think there were a lot of other elements in the story that made this theme seem shallow at best. xo, LaurenGems from E104Black as Night (2021)Cheers (1982, television series)The Twilight Zone (1959, television series)The Faculty (1998)Scream 7 (upcoming)Companion (2025)The Blackening (2023)Barbarian (2022)22 Jump Street (2014)Idle Hands (1999)The Devil Wear Prada 2 (upcoming)Moana 2 (2024)Moana (2016)Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996)Jason X (2021)Wolf Man (2025)Van Helsing (2004)28 Years Later (2025)The Last of Us (2023, television series)Fear Street trilogy (2021)Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025)Goosebumps (2023, television series)Goosebumps: The Vanishing (2025, television series)Goosebumps (1995, television series)The Nightmare Room (2001, television series)The Haunting Hour (2010, television series)Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001, television series)Squid Game (2021, television series)Virgin River (2019, television series)Locke & Key (2020 television series)Sinners (2025)Mickey 17 (2025)Black Panther (2018)Spongebob Squarepants (1997, animated television series)Courage the Cowardly Dog (1999, animated television series)The Monkey (2025)Longlegs (2024)Until Dawn (2025)Until Dawn (2015, video game)Black Christmas (2019)Black Christmas (1976)Happy Death Day (2016)Cabin in the Woods (2012)Annabelle: Creation (2017)Lights Out (2016)Shazam: Fury of the Gods (2023)Groundhog Day (1993)Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020)Chlorine Sky (Mahogany L. The Canadian actor Lauren Collins became famous for playing a gutsy, outspoken high school student on "Degrassi: The Next Generation.” But now as she approaches her 40s, she's matured into roles that portray women with new kinds of problems, such as when to have a baby, how not to work so much, and what to do about the ghost of your mother who won't shut up. Lauren sits down with Tom Power to talk about her new show, “My Dead Mom,” and how it strikes the perfect balance between anger, humour, grief and the conflicting emotions around losing a parent who drove you crazy.

When Tassie Cameron first saw the opening credits for Law and Order Toronto: Criminal Intent, complete with the iconic DUN DUN sound effect, she felt a shiver up her spine. It was Cameron who was entrusted with the legendary series' first foray beyond American borders, serving as show runner and head writer for the Canadian franchise. Tassie says Toronto is a natural fit, with its diverse population, distinct neighbourhoods and yes, rampant crime scene. There are differences, however, in our criminal justice system, and those can pose a challenge, along with the demanding responsibility to get the show right. Tassie Cameron has a shiny resume, having written and produced a slew of award winning TV series such as Pretty Hard Cases, Flashpoint, Rookie Blue and Degrassi: The Next Generation. The daughter of crime reporter Stevie Cameron, Tassie grew up with the need to know whydunit as much as who. We talk about crime and corruption, using a Canadian cast and crew, and how Toronto is finally ready for its close-up. You Can watch this episode on YouTube. It's hard to remember a time when Drake wasn't the biggest rapper in the world. He is Canada's most successful AND influential artist of the 21st century. As both a rapper and a singer he has pretty much single-handedly put our country on the map for hip-hop and R&B.  He is a five-time Grammy winner, has 85 million monthly listeners on Streaming Services- more than any other rapper - and holds the record for most number 2 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. He also ranks fifth behind the likes of the Beatles and Mariah Carey with the most number 1 singles. By the mid-2000s when Drake embarked on a rap career, Canadians already knew him from Degrassi The Next Generation. Of course, His name wasn't Drake back then, it was Aubrey Graham, a teenager from the Toronto neighbourhood of Forest Hill, who caught his break when he was cast as Jimmy Brooks.  Aubrey left the show during its eighth season to pursue music full time. As much as he had become a star on Canadian television as an actor, he wanted to go global with his music career.  Drake dropped his first mixtape, Room For Improvement, on Valentine's Day 2006. He was still working on Degrassi at the time, but had already made some connections in the rap game. Drake would wait a year before he followed up Room For Improvement. But in that time he had already made connections that would help him advance his music. Among the producers he brought in to make beats for him were 9th Wonder, who had worked with Jay-Z, Destiny's Child and De La Soul, Atlanta's DJ Toomp and a couple of local guys: Boi-1da once, and Noah “40” Shebib. Jas Prince was an aspiring rap mogul from Houston, Texas looking to become a legit rap mogul like his father, J Prince, founder of Rap-A-Lot Records.  While he was looking around MySpace one day in 2006, he found Drake's artist page and saw a lot of promise in the tracks posted. He played some of the songs for his dad, J Prince, but he couldn't hear what Jas was so excited about. Then one day Jas shared Drake's music with New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne, who had just struck gold with his album Tha Carter II. At first, Wayne wasn't impressed. Jas persisted though, and months later on New Year's Day, he played Wayne a few more songs in the car, one of which was Drake's remix of Wayne's own “A Milli,” a song that had yet to be released commercially. That was the moment Drake became legit. Jas put Lil Wayne in touch with Drake and the next day Drake was flying to Houston to meet with one of his heroes. Drake ended up joining Lil Wayne for his I AM Music Tour at the end of 2008 and the Toronto kid quickly became the New Orleans legend's protege.  Every opportunity they could get they would record new tracks, some of which ended up on Drake's next project. So Far Gone, Drake's third mixtape, was released on February 13, 2009. One song on the mixtape stood out more than others and it began to catch fire, leading Drake to make a video with one of the biggest artists in the world. This is the true story of Drake's 'Best I Ever Had' with newly unearthed audio from MUCH, as well as sound from Rap Radar, MTV News, Myspace, and CBS News.

This week's episode is no different as we grab hold of A24's horror feature Talk to Me (2023), having seen it on its opening night. We think that Talk to Me is a unique film in that it operates parallel to your typical possession horror flick (which makes for some unforgettable results).      Listen in as we unpack that as well as the Philippou bros.'s direction (and career beginnings), the bystander effect and what it means to bear witness in regards to social media as a narrative device, the jarring juxtaposition in framing possession as a party game, and Mia's intense and lonely bout as a grieving protagonist.     This episode might be a long one but we'd like to think it's quite gripping all the same. With so many platforms it can be hard to keep track of the latest pop culture trends. So this week we're sharing pods to keep you current by rounding up the best in pop culture. First, we'll meet MC Sha-Rock. You may not know her name, but she's an integral part of hip-hop history. Her group the Funky 4 + 1 More was one of the first rap groups to ever perform on national TV. But shortly after, her career hit the glass ceiling. Louder Than A Riot explores how Sha-Rock's legacy got buried in the hip-hop archive. Then we look at the origins of another hip hop icon Drake. But we're not talking about his mixtape. We're talking about his performance on Degrassi: The Next Generation:The podcast Back Issue asks "Do you remember the teen show that made you fall in love with teen shows?" From there we change lanes from hip hop to 90s pop. In a clip from Switched on Pop, we'll hear from Seal himself on how his timeless hit "Kiss from a Rose" became a surprising, but enduring classic. Yes, the Batman Forever soundtrack was an integral part of the song's legacy (thank you, Joel Schumacher). Plus: we look into the rise of TV rewatch podcasts. Why are they so popular and why does every celeb seem to have one? Featuring: Switched On Pop: "Kiss From a Rose" is one of the most unusual number one hits of all time. Seal's song can't decide if it's in minor or major, it uses an old-fashioned waltz rhythm, and its lush orchestration and elaborate vocal harmonies support mysterious lyrics about a "greying tower alone on the sea." Seal himself wasn't sure about the song, and needed some convincing to include the composition on his 1994 album SEAL II." Louder Than a Riot: "In 1981, MC Sha-Rock and her group, the Funky 4 + 1, were invited to perform on Saturday Night Live. It was one of the first nationally televised rap performances ever, expanding the reach of the nascent genre to mainstream audiences who might never have heard or seen it before. It was almost certainly the first time many viewers had seen a woman rapping. But little did SNL's audience know that Sha-Rock was hiding something — for the sake of the group's continued success, and for her own survival." Frontburner: "As a kid in the Winnipeg suburb of Transcona, Tyson Smith was obsessed with hockey and the Winnipeg Jets. He dreamed of being a professional goaltender. Decades later, Smith – now known as "Kenny Omega" – has made his way to the Jets' home arena for a different reason: he's performing as a professional wrestler. Omega joined Front Burner host Jayme Poisson to discuss the culture of wrestling in Winnipeg, his path to fame in Japan, his push to expand inclusivity and storytelling in the sport, and swirling rumours about what he'll do next." Back Issue: Josh Gwynn is joined by Amil Niazi to revisit Degrassi: The Next Generation. Does the show stand up? Or did it age about as well the the cottage cheese you forgot in the back of the fridge? 2 Black Girls, 1 Rose: Time for a reality TV deep dive. If you watched season 3 of Love is Blind, then you may have had a lot of questions for Zanab Jaffrey. Co-hosts and real-life BFFs Justine Kay and Natasha Scott-Reichel did too. Here they dig deep on "the cuties debacle," Zanab's experience as a woman of colour dating a white man on TV, their epic wedding breakup, and more!
