Politiek is een belangrijke factor geworden voor beleggers. Vroeger maakte het niet zoveel uit wie de Amerikaanse president was, maar nu is dat anders. De verkiezingsuitslag is ook de belangrijkste verklaring voor de koersexplosie van Tesla. Als de ceo zélf achter de knoppen mag zitten om de regels te maken voor onder andere zelfrijdende auto’s, dan is het niet moeilijk optimistisch te zijn. Bij big pharma ligt dat anders: Robert F. Kennedy junior mag in ruil voor zijn steun aan Trump daar de regels bepalen, en hij is heel erg antibigpharma. En toegegeven: dat heeft de sector ook over zichzelf afgeroepen. Zorgkosten bedragen nu 16,6% van de totale Amerikaanse economie. Dat is een van de hoogste percentages van alle Oeso-landen. De levensverwachting van de gemiddelde Amerikaan is daarbij een van de laagste, en is zelfs verder aan het dalen. Zorg is een businessmodel in de VS. Een heel winstgevend businessmodel zelfs. Ik kan u de dramaseries Dopesick en Painkiller aanraden, die zijn gebaseerd op het schandaal van Purdue Pharma, de maker van pijnstiller OxyContin. Ik zou ze niet met de kerst kijken, want ze zijn behoorlijk deprimerend. De zogenaamd niet verslavende medicijnen van Purdue speelden een belangrijke rol in de opioïdencrisis in de VS, die een ontwrichtende impact heeft gehad op de Amerikaanse samenleving. Iets wat wij hier in Nederland te allen tijde moeten zien te voorkomen. Een beetje commercie is goed; het zorgt ervoor dat het systeem efficiënter kan draaien. Te veel is slecht. Natuurlijk is de situatie in Nederland heel anders, hoewel ook hier de commercialisering langzaam maar zeker in het systeem sluipt. Laatst sprak ik iemand die reisjes naar Ibiza regelde voor mondhygiënisten. Dan krijg ik toch de kriebels. In de farmaceutische- en zorgindustrie zijn dergelijke praktijken blijkbaar normaal. Wie garandeert mij dat ik niet allerlei overbodige behandelingen krijg aangesmeerd? Vertrouwen is een groot goed, en op deze manier komt dat wel onder druk te staan. De benoeming van Kennedy als minister van gezondheidszorg heeft ervoor gezorgd dat de Amerikaanse farmasector maar liefst 10% is achtergebleven bij de brede markt. Is nu alles ingeprijsd en is het voor beleggers een mooi instapmoment? Er is namelijk weer eens een nieuw virus uitgebroken in Afrika. En misschien verzanden deze populistische ideeën ook wel in de bureaucratische machine, net zoals we met veel zaken in de Nederlandse politiek zien. Nu een van de meest winstgevende markten mogelijk aan banden wordt gelegd, zou ik voorzichtig met beleggen zijn. Het zou wel eens een structurele ommekeer kunnen zijn in de farmaceutische industrie. En misschien maar goed ook. De Amerikaanse situatie geeft aan dat hebzucht niet altijd goed is, om Gordon Gekko’s uitspraak uit de film Wall Street maar weer eens tegen te spreken. Lead Story: Telling the story of the opioid crisis: A narrative analysis of the TV series Dopesick  PLOS One Dopesick (2021) is the first TV series whose plot deals exclusively with the opioid crisis in the United States. The current study uses narrative analysis and framing theory to explore this series, discussing its portrayal of the people and themes involved in the opioid crisis. This analysis found that although Dopesick attempts to portray multiple dimensions of the opioid crisis, its narrative oversimplifies the story in attributing the cause of the problem almost exclusively to Purdue Pharma and its director Richard Sackler, while downplaying other factors that contributed to the opioid crisis. Thus, the narrative in this TV series tends to offer simple explanations to a complex problem for which simple solutions are likely to be inadequate. When you think of an addict, most of us visualize a homeless person or someone in a crack house, not a housewife, a wealthy exec, or successful CEO. Our guest today, software developer and business owner, Dave Ford, had never smoked a cigarette or taken illegal drugs growing up. But when his wife suggested he see a doctor for ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder), he NEVER suspected that he'd be spending the next 10 years as a raging addict to Adderall. Adderall is a stimulant medication of mixed amphetamine salts that contains two active drugs: amphetamine and dextroamphetamine.  Dave's doctor never mentioned that Adderall has the potential to be addictive and potentially habit-forming. In Dave's case, it was. According to Dave, ‘No one ever told me that the really dangerous shit doesn't come from the drug dealer. It comes from your family doctor.'
