159. Law & Order: Organized's Crime's Danielle Mone Truitt on the realities of representation

Of course, it is helpful to have the theory and principles behind inclusive marketing to give you a strong foundation for growth. I'm a big believer in learning from real-world situations and issues and hearing the voices of real people.  I often feel that these stories from real people will not only help you connect the dots and bring the theory to life for you in a more vivid way, but it also makes it easier for you to be in the lookout for areas to give special attention to when you put what you've learned about inclusive marketing into practice. In today's episode, you're going to hear my chat with Danielle Monae Truitt, who plays who plays Sergeant Ayanna Bell on Peacock's upcoming fifth season of the iconic series starring Christopher Meloni, Law & Order: Organized Crime.  Of course we talked a little bit about some interesting things related to the show – but I found so much of what Danielle had to say extremely relevant to you and your efforts on making your marketing more inclusive. We touched on authenticity, production – specifically as it relates to Black women's hair. We covered representation – and what good representation looks like (because lets face it, a lot of representation falls short). Many of the themes Danielle mentioned as it relates to Black women's hair, and what good representation looks like, were things consumers specifically spoke about as part of the representation in marketing research study I conducted. If you haven't had a look at that, no worries, I'll link it up for you in the show notes, as well as another article that covers how to do representation in marketing the right way. “Brother, could you lend me a hand?” (That's a question we'll answer in our White Lotus predictions update at the end of the episode! But first…) The breezy new Netflix comedy Running Point doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it's a breath of fresh air in a season of tense dramas and cheap thrillers (we're looking at you, The Night Agent). Guest Host Ian Brodsky has watched the whole season and is here to convince you to spend some time with fun characters who constantly get themselves into (and out of) hilarious jams. Of course, modern Netflix shows also have a reputation for being “background TV” but is that really a bad thing? Chris makes the case for the “tell don't show” school of screenwriting. But wait! There's more! Programming news from Peacock, Max, TNT, and TBS (the Turner nets! Remember them?). Plus the strange, sad saga of the new 24/7 Simpsons channel (allegedly) streaming on Disney+. ———

Eric: Not counting wrestling, Im saying honourable mentions would be from the 1990s my childhood that i go back and watch: Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Murder She Wrote, Columbo, Matlock, Spiderman Johnny Bravo, Criminal Minds, Law and Order, Living Out of your Car, Bored To Death, Burn Notice, How To Make It In America, Hell On Wheels, Breaking Bad, early Walking Dead, The Wire, Will and Grace, Quantum Leap, all of the Star Treks. Top 5: 5 - Bosh - Police procedural featuring Titus Welliver, I read the first four books in a row, currently heading on book five of like 35, once I finish another book i'm on. It's amazing. If you could literally pick anyone who captures Bosh, it's Titus Welliver. 4. Brooklyn Nine Nine - I've seen every episode twice, it's outstanding. Jake Peralta and Charles Boyle are hilarious. 3. Highlander from the 1990s, I remember watching it pre knowing about the films it was based on and thought for Canadian content it was great. 2. Celebrity Name Game - Craig Ferguson hosted this guessing game where Celebrities and fans would team up to try and win the fan some money. 1 Law and Order SVU - Easily the best police procedural of all time. Olivia Benson and her team have seen it all. Also shout out to Law and Order Organized Crime where they gave Stabler basically his own show so neither he or Benson can feel overshadowed. X: @E_Freeds IG: @NatteringWithE Brundan Honourable mentions: Oz, Simpsons, Entourage, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, Ren and Stempy. Top 5: 5 - Sopranos - Dug a lady, but dug the show more, saw one episode and was hooked. Most rewatches of any show I've seen. 4 - Futurama - When it first came out it was excellent. When it went to Adult Swim I was hooked on everything. Had my friends over to watch. Until it was brought back it had the best ending. 3- Letterkenney - Turned on to that during pandemic, blew through it, it's one of the most bingeable shows I've ever watched. Great ending, sad to see it end. Jared Keo as Wayne Shoresy, is fantastic. 2- Law and Order SVU - Watching it for 20 years, loved every episode, every character change, every story ark. Munch the best character, dark and sad but very good watch. 1- The Venture Brothers - My favourite show of all time, ran for 7 seasons 81 episodes, 4 specials, every single one of them was great. Drop subtle hints in the early seasons then pay off in later seasons. Brock Samson phenomenal character. Johnny Quest rip off originally then became it's own show. X: @Irishmisfit Follow: ShiningWizards, ROH Revelry, SJ: Honourable Mentions: SOA, Law and Order Franchise, Metalocalypse, Robot Chicken, Rick and Morty, Big Mouth, Oz, Orange Is The New Black, Fringe Top 5: 5 - Saved By The Bell - Favourite since I was a kid, gave good lessons and advice, great characters. Present day Zach Morris is trash. Lazy at home show, tons of seasons to watch. Favourite Episode: Jessie addicted to caffeine pills. 4 - Beverley Hills 90210 - Learnt things, great teen drama, storylines, Dylan McKay was my bad boy first crush. 3- American Horror Stories - 2021 series, spin off of American Horror Story, Daphney episode where it's like Alexa but a psycho version. A lot of good freaky horror gore stories. Always famous people, and Kim Kardashian 2- American Horror Story - Twisted episodes, messed up themes, one of my favourite seasons were season 1 murder house, coven, hotel with Lady Gaga, the season where they did 1984, very 80s murder based, season 9 was 1984. I love everything horror and gore. 1- Walking Dead - Religiously hooked from season 1 to season 9 or 10. Ordered in take out just to watch it. Discovered Norman Reedus aka Darryl Dixon. Jeffrey Dean Morgan showing up was excellent too. SJ: @KarnivalofKhaos Follow: Frigid Eh every Wednesday, Good Cop Bad Cop, Markin Out With Tom!

The Broadway musical is making its long-awaited London premiere, and follows the entwining mythic tale of two love stories between Orpheus and Eurydice and that of King Hades of the Underworld and his wife Persephone. The show will open at the Lyric Theatre on 10th February, described by Vogue as ‘your next musical theatre obsession'.   After majoring in Musical Theatre at Ithaca College, James made his Broadway debut in CORAM BOY at the Imperial Theatre before playing ‘Thomas Hassinger' in the original cast of the Tony Award winning production of SOUTH PACIFIC (Lincoln Center). He then originated the role of ‘Lurch' in the Broadway musical of THE ADDAMS FAMILY (Lunt-Fontanne Theatre), followed by his professional operatic debut as ‘Abraham Lincoln' in THE PERFECT AMERICAN (Teatro Real) in Madrid, which was written specifically for Zachary by renowned composer, Philip Glass. He then revived the role on the West End for English National Opera and in Brisbane for Opera Queensland.   Following this, Zachary created the role of ‘Amenhotep' in the Olivier Award winning production of AKHNATEN on the West End for English National Opera, later reprising the role for The Metropolitan Opera and Los Angeles Opera. Other theatre highlights include the role of ‘John Claggart' in the Emmy Award winning PBS broadcast of BILLY BUDD (Des Moines Metro Opera), ‘Sweeney Todd' in SWEENEY TODD (Opera Omaha) and more.   Zachary made his first television debut alongside Tina Fey and Steve Martin as ‘Carl', a Federal Agent, on beloved American sitcom 30 ROCK before appearing on a number of series including MURPHY BROWN, LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME, and THE BLACKLIST.

With the TV industry adapting to the ever-changing landscape of streaming services, viewers are often left wondering whether their favorite network TV shows are coming back or not. Recently, many network shows have been canceled or ended multi-season runs, while others received early renewals or surprise resurrections. ABC had a relatively modest number of cancellations this season. “Alaska Daily,” “Avalon,” “Big Sky,” “The Company You Keep,” and “The Goldbergs” all got the ax. “A Million Little Things” ended its multi-season run. In terms of renewals, “Abbott Elementary,” “American Idol,” “The Bachelor,” “Celebrity Family Feud,” “Claim to Fame,” “Dancing With the Stars,” “The Good Doctor,” “Grey's Anatomy,” “Press Your Luck,” “The Rookie,” “Station 19,” “Will Trent,” and “The Wonder Years” are all coming back. CBS was busy renewing its shows this season, with many getting the green light. Among those renewed are “48 Hours,” “60 Minutes,” “The Amazing Race,” “Blue Bloods,” “Bob Hearts Abishola,” “CSI: Vegas,” “The Equalizer,” “FBI,” “FBI: International,” “FBI: Most Wanted,” “Fire Country,” “Ghosts,” “Lingo,” “NCIS,” “NCIS: Hawaii,” “The Neighborhood,” “So Help Me Todd,” “Survivor,” “S.W.A.T.,” “Tough as Nails,” and “Young Sheldon.” “East New York” and “True Lies” were canceled, while “NCIS: Los Angeles” ended its run. Over at The CW, “Kung Fu,” “Tom Swift,” “Walker: Independence,” and “The Winchesters” were canceled, while “The Flash,” “Nancy Drew,” “Riverdale,” and “DC's Stargirl” all had their final season orders. “All American” and “Walker” were renewed, while “All American: Homecoming,” “Gotham Knights,” and “Superman & Lois” are still waiting to hear if they will return. Fox canceled “Call Me Kat,” “Fantasy Island,” and “Monarch,” while “9-1-1” moved over to ABC for its seventh season. “The Cleaning Lady,” “The Great North,” “HouseBroken,” “So You Think You Can Dance,” and “Welcome to Flatch” are all waiting to hear their fate. “9-1-1: Lone Star,” “Accused,” “Alert: Missing Persons Unit,” “Animal Control,” “Bob's Burgers,” “Family Guy,” “Grimsburg,” “Krapopolis,” and “The Simpsons” were all renewed. NBC had a mix of cancellations and renewals, with “Call Your Mother,” “Debris,” “Good Girls,” “Law & Order: For the Defense,” “Manifest,” and “Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist” all getting canceled. “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago Med,” “Chicago P.D.,” “La Brea,” “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” “Law & Order: SVU,” “Lopez vs. Lopez,” “Magnum P.I.,” “Night Court,” “Password,” “Quantum Leap,” and “The Voice” were all renewed. In conclusion, it's important to stay informed about the TV shows you love, but with the industry shifting toward streaming services, it can be hard to keep up. However, with reliable sources like Entertainment Tonight, viewers can stay on top of whether their favorite shows are canceled or renewed.

If the Back To One podcast has one tradition, it is the yearly visit from its very first guest, the living patron saint of the working actor, Kevin Corrigan. This is his fifth time on the show (Ep. 1, Ep. 67, Ep. 133, Ep.185), and as you'll hear, he still has a healthy supply of great stories, laughs, and inspiration to dish out. He talks about his recent stints on “Law and Order: Organized Crime,” “City on a Hill,” and the indie film “Bang Bang;” tells a hilarious story illustrating the ways he practices acting when not on a job; gets nostalgic describing the masterful mix tapes he used to make; plus much more! It all starts out with my recounting of a Corrigan-themed phone call I had with the legendary Amy Taubin minutes before the interview. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft.  Follow Back To One on Instagram
