In this episode of Author to Author, Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson interviews David Clayton on his book The Little Oratory: A Beginner's Guide to Praying in the Home (April 30, 2024)Keeping a faithful prayer life with your family isn't easy. From herding distracted children to managing the seemingly endless litany of prayers and devotions, our spiritual life all too often feels frantic and burdensome. This isn't the way it should be. Our prayer life, our family life, and our work life should--and can!--be in harmony. When they are, our family is a powerhouse of grace, and Our Lord transforms our home into a little Eden--a little bit of heaven on earth. With simplicity and holy wisdom, authors David Clayton and Leila Marie Lawler show you how to bring peace to your home by integrating your family into the calm, truly joyful way of Mother Church. Her feasts and seasons, prayers and devotions are gifts that draw us closer to God and unfold before us His marvelous plan of salvation. To help you live the Liturgical Life of the Church more fully, David and Leila reclaim here an almost lost tradition that families used for centuries to build a beautiful bridge between home and church: the little oratory.Consisting of a modest table and icons, the little oratory is a visible sign of spiritual awareness and devotion. It extends the Eucharistic worship of the Mass into the heart of your home, spiritually nourishing your family and preparing them to transform the world through prayer and charity.Building your own little oratory is simple, and in these pages you'll discover just how easy it is. In fact, you likely have most of the pieces in your home already except, perhaps, the sacred art. That s why we've included here seven full-colored icons that are ready for framing, enabling you to get started right away!By following the wise advice in this book, you'll discover the peace and love that flows from a home that is focused on Christ. You'll also learn . . .How to use sacred art to strengthen your prayer life. How to extend Catholic beliefs and devotions into every room of the house. Why the Liturgy of the Hours is important and how it can make your family holy. How to pray the Rosary with children and keep the rowdiest of them calm and reverent. The active role children can and should play in the prayer life of the family. What to do when only one parent takes the spiritual life seriously. How to overcome the feeling that you're too busy to pray.Practical ways to extend the liturgical life into your workplace. And countless other tips to help you practice your faith in the heart of your home. The Little Oratory: A Beginner's Guide to Praying in the Home: David Clayton, Leila Marie Lawler: 9781622821761: Amazon.com: BooksBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/author-to-author--4129285/support.

Unlike the Old Testament Israelites, New Testament Christians are not required to observe any particular set of feasts, festivals, or commemorations — Scripture does not lay out a Church Year that we are required to follow. However, the Christian standard is not ‘What is required?', but rather: ‘What is profitable?' When we ask, instead of what we must do, what we should do for the sake of unity, instruction, and order, we arrive at a far different answer from that of most modern Christians, who have jettisoned from their faith much of the historic practices of the Church. Whereas we affirm that neither we nor you, as Christians, are required to observe the feasts, festivals, and commemorations of the Church and her historic calendar, we also resolutely contend that these observances are good for the body of Christ. It is in the cyclical and seasonal observances that we live out of lives as Christians and recognize our brothers-in-Christ, who are living out similar lives. There is a difference between the minimum of the faith and the fullness of the faith — we want you to have the latter. Subscribe to the podcast here. This is the first of two talks on Spiritual Warfare given by Fr. Barnabas Powell in October of 2021. The Liturgical life of the Orthodox Church forms our inner lives enabling us to be spiritual soldiers in Christ's army. Fr. Barnabas brings a fresh perspective on the timeless teachings of traditional Christianity. Fr. Barnabas Powell was born and raised in Atlanta, GA. His journey to Orthodoxy came as a result of many years of searching for a “lifestyle” that would be truly Christian. After years in Evangelical Protestant ministry and serving in Christian media, both radio and television, he launched Faith Encouraged Ministries to use what he learned in sharing faith through media for the Orthodox Faith. Fr. Barnabas is an author, pastor, podcaster, and teacher committed to offering a credible witness of the timeless Orthodox faith for this culture. His daily devotional - Faith Encouraged Daily - reaches over 5000 people a week. His weekly homilies - Faith Encouraged - have been watched over 150,000 times on YouTube. And his twice a month live call-in show - Faith Encouraged LIVE - is one of the most popular shows on Ancient Faith Radio.

This week on Service in Practice, our first clergy guest appears. Fr. Nathanael Guirguis, the priest of St. Mark's Coptic Orthodox Church in Atlanta, GA, joins and talks about the importance of the Liturgy to our service. I'm honored to interview Fr. Nathanael, who hosts the podcast Meet & Right, which you can check out for in-depth conversations about the Liturgy in the Orthodox Church. From the early church to today's hyper-individualized world post-COVID, Fr. Nathanael stresses the importance of the Liturgy, in that it is a gathering of the believers. In Liturgy and in the Body of Christ, we, the broken, can be made whole.
