Playmakers: An All-Star MashupIn this week's episode, we meet four different playmakers, each with their own perspective on leveling up in business and life.GUEST BIOS:Jordan HarbingerJordan is a Wall St. lawyer-turned-podcast interviewer with an approachable style and a knack for securing high-profile guests. His show, The Jordan Harbinger Show, was selected as part of Apple's Best of 2018. Today, the show has over 11 million downloads per month and features a wide array of guests that have included the late Kobe Bryant, Dennis Rodman, Tony Hawk, Cesar Millan, Simon Sinek, Eric Schmidt, and Neil deGrasse Tyson.Erika WasserErika Wasser is a thriving entrepreneur and has hosted her own HGTV show after cutting her teeth as a comedian. She founded GLAM+GO, a salon and blow-dry chain and membership program. Most recently, she co-founded Prospr at Work, a workforce management software platform for hourly and shift-based teams now used by some of the country's most recognizable brands to manage and connect their teams.David SiegelDavid Siegel joined the Los Angeles Sports Council and Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games as President and Chief Executive Officer for both organizations after a 22-year career with the LA Dodgers. He worked in every revenue producing department, most recently as Vice President of Global Partnerships after spending 10 years as Vice President of Ticket Sales. Under his leadership, the Dodgers achieved the highest attendance in Major League Baseball for five consecutive seasons.Santor NishizakiSantor Nishizaki is on a mission to create a happier workplace by helping organizations increase generational awareness and discover strengths that can elevate people to reach their full potential, something he has implemented in the boardroom as well as the classroom as he serves as the professor in multiple universities at an undergraduate and MBA level. Santor has served in leadership roles at both NASA and Disney Imagineering, where he was an integral part of the opening of Disneyland Shanghai. He'll be launching his first book this year, a guide on leading and working with Generation Z.CORE TOPICS + DETAILS:Jordan Harbinger[4:38] - Jordan's ‘Connect Four'Find the ‘dead' networking contacts and bring them to lifeJordan uses a method he calls ‘connect four,' where he scrolls down through his messages and finds four connections someone else might consider ‘dead'— no recent messages, no potential. Then he reignites those conversations, often to striking results. How can you ‘connect four' in your own career?[6:52] - The Power of ReciprocationMake people happy to help you by helping them firstToo many people try to get something out of a connection before they've put in the work. Your first question when building a connection shouldn't be ‘what can they do for me?' It should be, what can I do for them?Erika Wasser[11:26] - How Being a Leader is Like Doing Stand-upWhy standing up in front of an organization is like standing up in front of a crowdAs a leader or a standup, you're always taking risks, taking chances, gauging your audience and changing course. Whether it's fundraising or making quick decisions or leading a team, the basic skills of paying attention to how you're perceived is essential.[16:49] - Planning Doesn't Replace Doing“Sometimes you just have to do the thing.”Don't let perfect get in the way of good enough, because perfect isn't happening. You can plan as much as you want, but planning doesn't replace doing. Sometimes you have to get knee-deep in a problem before you can begin to figure it out.David Siegel[22:50] - Never Say No to OpportunityYou'll never have experiences if you don't say ‘yes' when they arriveIn the first seven or eight years of your career, just say yes to every opportunity. Elevate every project and teammate you're associated with and watch your skills, experiences, and relationships blossom.[25:32] - No ScoreboardsWhy measuring relationships with a ledger is a bad ideaDavid isn't a believer in doing things for others in the hopes they'll do something for you in return. Selflessness and relationship-building must be real, not put into place in order to get some benefit out of it. That's the only way truly powerful connections can be made and maintained.Santor Nishizaki[29:53] - Embrace Your Winning SpiritSometimes competitiveness is a powerful traitIn today's career market, we're often told to subdue our competitiveness and focus instead on lifting all boats. But if you're competitive by nature, sometimes your best move is to embrace that side of you to an extent— it can be a powerful motivator that pushes you to make impactful plays.[31:52] - Turn Your Worst Moments into Your Greatest StrengthsHow tragedy, frustration, and failure help us growAfter experiencing a terrible tragedy, Santor decided to grow up overnight. He used that moment as a springboard to propel him to a work ethic that can only be called ridiculous. He's channeled his passion, tragedy, and frustration into success.RESOURCES:[0:14] - The Power of Playing Offense[3:04] - The Jordan Harbinger Show[8:10] - GLAM+GO[8:18] - Prospr at Work[21:12] - Los Angeles Sports Council[28:17] - Disney ImagineeringFOLLOW:We'd love to hear your thoughts on today's episode. Episode SummaryFootball is synonymous with Sundays in America and the NFL draft has become almost like a celebrity awards show. What makes it so popular? Why have other sports not achieved that status? Kevin Demoff, Chief Operating Officer of the Los Angeles Rams, not only answers that question but also talks about how data drives the draft, why defense isn't the best offense when it comes to hiring diversity, and how the NFL is continuing to operate under COVID. Get unprecedented access to the talent beyond the playbook, in this episode of The Sydcast. Syd FinkelsteinSyd Finkelstein is the Steven Roth Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. Kevin DemoffKevin Demoff is in his 11th year as Chief Operating Officer with the Los Angeles Rams football team. In this capacity, Demoff serves as the team's top front office executive and liaison to owner and chairman, Stan Kroenke, on all organizational matters. The campus will include SoFi Stadium, a retail district and office complex and is currently the largest entitled real-estate project in Southern California. Kevin and Jennifer have two children – a daughter, Claire and a son, Owen.Insights from this episode:Details on the NFL draft, its singular popularity among sports drafts, and how COVID has affected how the draft is held.Reasons why the Rams have a majority female staff, how hiring practices have changed, and how COVID has highlighted the need for greater work-life balance.Strategies used for recruiting talent to the team, how technology has improved player research, and why being the fastest might not be what gets you on the team.Similarities between running a business and running an NFL team. How to promote and improve diverse hiring practices within the NFL and why status quo hiring practices have hurt teams and created a poor candidate pool in terms of diversity.Difficulties specific to running a NFL franchise under COVID and how to move forward as safely as possible. Quotes from the show: “What's so unique about the NFL draft right now, I would say, is the collision of what I believe are the two most popular sports in America which is the NFL and college football.” – Kevin DemoffOn working from home during COVID: “Seeing people at home, in their environments, has helped people understand more the importance of that work-life balance.” – Kevin Demoff“Once you have people in senior leadership who are diverse, be that gender, be that, racial, be that LGBTQ, they are much more open to hiring people who are diverse underneath them.” – Kevin Demoff“If you bring someone in who is super talented but doesn't fit your culture, who does not have the ability to do what is most important within your culture, they're probably not going to be a fit.” – Kevin Demoff“In the NFL we are bad at developing head coaches. When you look at the turnover in the NFL in head coaches, we are terrible at hiring.” – Kevin Demoff“Imagine every team had an offensive-oriented head coach, all of a sudden it's not the same league anymore, there's going to be an advantage to having someone on the defensive side.” – Syd FinkelsteinOn hiring coaches: “Winning the press conference and making the big hire was not ultimately what was going to set us up for success, it was finding the right fit for our organization at that time.” – Kevin Demoff“You've got to give people a chance to make things happen.” – Syd Finkelstein“If we really want to improve the minority pipeline, we can be more patient with all of our coaches so that those coaches get a chance … for success.” – Kevin Demoff“I think, much like the rest of the world, we have to get to a point in the NFL where one case does not shut down the NFL and one case doesn't shut down the world.” – Kevin DemoffStay Connected: Syd FinkelsteinWebsite: http://thesydcast.comLinkedIn: Sydney FinkelsteinTwitter: @sydfinkelsteinFacebook: The SydcastInstagram: The Sydcast Kevin DemoffWebsite: therams.com/team/front-office-roster/kevin-demoffLinkedIn: Kevin DemoffTwitter: @kdemoffSubscribe to our podcast + download each episode on Stitcher, iTunes, and Spotify. This episode was produced and managed by Podcast Laundry (www.podcastlaundry.com)

It’s with great pleasure that we bring on Fred Claire, former General Manager and Executive Vice-President of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Most notably, Fred orchestrated the 1988 World Series Championship team. He continued his historic run through June of 1998. While Fred (or Mr. Claire as some call him) admits to not having the skill to play baseball, his love for the sport grew into a position – and a 30-year career with the Dodgers. Since then, he’s maintained an active schedule as a columnist and analyst for MLB.com. He also has served as an instructor at the University of Southern California and as a consultant to companies involved in sports. Fred serves on the advisory board for the Sports Management graduate program at California State University, Long Beach and is a lecturer in Social Sciences, Humanities, and Social Services at California Institute of Technology. Fred is a member of the board of directors of the Rose Bowl Operating Company and is also holds board of director positions for the Special Olympics of Southern California; the Los Angeles Sports Council; and Life Skills FORE Pasadena Youth, Inc. Fred is the co-founder of Scoutables, which is revolutionizing the way professional sports organizations manage financial risk around the most valuable financial assets. But what may be more impressive than the numerous business and leadership success Fred has achieved over the years is his recent battle with cancer. At City Of Hope Fred has 28 lymph nodes and nerve endings in his jaw bone removed through surgery followed by 33 radiation treatments and seven rounds of chemotherapy. Fred came out the other side with a new appreciation for the teamwork that it takes to treat cancer, and in Fred-fashion has turned his focus to raising awareness and funds for City Of Hope through the Fred Claire Celebrity Golf Classic. A couple things to listen for in this episode: A controversial decision Fred had to make in the 80’s How the strike of 1994 and a World Series loss changed the MLB What clubhouses, players, and free-agents should think about when it comes to joining a team How his love for the sport (but lack of skill) helped Fred shape a career in the Major League The secret to the Dodgers success If you’re at the end of your athletic career: what you should be thinking about and be doing The one thing you should be thinking about in your sports career A new technology that’s quickly revolutionizing the way sports organizations manage their financial risk Quotes “One game could make a difference.” – Fred Claire “The only thing I wanted to do was do the job I was assigned to do to the best of my ability.” – Fred Claire “The fundamentals of teamwork are the same ingredient in any successful business.” – Fred Claire “The most important aspect you have in business is your integrity.” – Fred Claire “Enjoy every moment, because it will be gone in the blink of an eye.” – Fred Claire “There’s an advantage when the spotlight is on you.” – Fred Claire “When the phone rings. This week’s conversation is with Women’s Senior National Team Water Polo head coach Adam Krikorian.Since taking over the Women's Senior National Team, Adam Krikorian has been just about perfect. From his arrival in 2009 Team USA has competed in 18 major FINA Championships and come away with Gold in 15. This includes the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, 2009, 2015, and 2017 FINA World Championships, the 2010 and 2014 FINA World Cups, seven FINA World League Super Final crowns and the 2016 Olympic Qualification Tournament. He's helped the United States maintain a number-one world ranking for the majority of his tenure.Following the 2016 Olympic Games, Krikorian was named Coach of the Games by the USOC at the Team USA Awards. And in early 2017, Krikorian was also honored by the Los Angeles Sports Council and the LA Sports Awards by receiving the first ever "Extraordinary Achievement In Olympic Sport" honors.Based on Adam’s impressive resume, you might expect Adam’s definition of success to align with winning, but this isn’t the case.In Adam’s first year coaching the national team, they won gold at the world championships yet Adam described it as one of his most frustrating and least satisfying moments as a coach because the culture and relationships weren’t right. For Adam, it’s not about selecting the best athletes but it’s about selecting the best team and there’s so many variables that go into that.Building great relationships is at the core of Adam’s coaching philosophy and in this conversation we learn about the factors that impact these relationships, how Adam goes about selecting players and creates an environment where people can be honest with others and themselves. We also discuss why Adam’s competitive fire, which has driven him his whole life, can be both a blessing and a curse. There is so much packed into this conversation – in Adam’s words, “Mastery is the journey of trying to become the best version of yourself.” And I hope this conversation helps you get a little bit further on your own journey. This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens.Athletic Greens is the Most Complete Supplement for a better you.
