While making up roughly 48% of the global workforce, women account for approximately 22% of labor participation in the traditional energy sector. The numbers get worse when one considers participation in management and senior management. However, the challenges of the energy sector become more pressing as the sector goes through a process of transformation; clean energy transitions will require innovative solutions and business models to be adopted and greater participation from a more diverse talent pool. CivitasLA is joined by Reiko Kerr, Senior Assistant General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (the nation's largest municipal-owned utility and the first woman to head LADWP's Power System) and Phyllis Currie, who chairs the board of directors of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, a regional transmission organization that runs an energy market and manages transmission assets in 15 states. Join us as we discuss the challenge, and opportunity, to grow the ranks of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and efforts to close the gender gap in the energy and utilities sector as women will play a critical role in driving innovative and inclusive solutions. Both are actively engaged in growing the community of women in the power sector through various civic organizations, including the Association of Women in Water, Energy, and the Environment. Kerri also discusses the evolution of her newsletter, “Keep Calm and Kerri On.” Rebranding from the Ground Up Whether you are trying to attract new residents/businesses or tourists, there is a lot of competition. It is important to differentiate your destination so it stands out from the crowd. Kerri has had a lot of success with this despite being thrown into the viper pit in the middle of a pandemic during her first year in charge. She has led the efforts of Commerce Chenango’s rebrand with a bottom-up approach. She has addressed their programs, initiatives, funding, and resources to make the greatest impact. Kerri also leveraged Chenango’s rural character to appeal to the shop local movement and attract people who are looking for a charming change of pace. Creativity in the Face of Adversity Adversity is no match for creativity, and one of the silver-linings of 2020 has been to watch creativity prevail in so many new ways. Aside from rebranding Commerce Chenango, Kerri has used creativity to engage the community in a bunch of other ways. Her team has produced a series of videos in-house to help people understand what is available in their community during the pandemic. They are also promoting safe events that are unique to Chenango County to drive visitor traffic going into 2021. This year has taught us to be more resourceful and more inquisitive about what our communities have to offer. Chenango is a great example of that. He is the Senior Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Performance at Indiana University. is responsible for the development and implementation of sport specific strength, conditioning, flexibility, speed and agility programs for the 8 time national champion men's soccer team. We spend time discussing how his athletic background and time competing in Adventure races and triathlons has helped provide a foundation for life after sustaining a C 6-7 spinal cord injury in 2012. You will hear that through the support of his wife, IU family along with his positive attitude and his willingness to push the boundaries of what is possible he has returned to work with student athletes, strength training and riding a hand cycle 5 days a week. I do have one correction at the end of the episode we spent time talking about the song "Say I Won't" by MercyMe which I heard for the 1st time the night before. I may have been incorrect with title but the content of song is so appropriate on how Tom lives his life. Quotes from the show: “What's so unique about the NFL draft right now, I would say, is the collision of what I believe are the two most popular sports in America which is the NFL and college football.” – Kevin DemoffOn working from home during COVID: “Seeing people at home, in their environments, has helped people understand more the importance of that work-life balance.” – Kevin Demoff“Once you have people in senior leadership who are diverse, be that gender, be that, racial, be that LGBTQ, they are much more open to hiring people who are diverse underneath them.” – Kevin Demoff“If you bring someone in who is super talented but doesn't fit your culture, who does not have the ability to do what is most important within your culture, they're probably not going to be a fit.” – Kevin Demoff“In the NFL we are bad at developing head coaches. When you look at the turnover in the NFL in head coaches, we are terrible at hiring.” – Kevin Demoff“Imagine every team had an offensive-oriented head coach, all of a sudden it's not the same league anymore, there's going to be an advantage to having someone on the defensive side.” – Syd FinkelsteinOn hiring coaches: “Winning the press conference and making the big hire was not ultimately what was going to set us up for success, it was finding the right fit for our organization at that time.” – Kevin Demoff“You've got to give people a chance to make things happen.” – Syd Finkelstein“If we really want to improve the minority pipeline, we can be more patient with all of our coaches so that those coaches get a chance … for success.” – Kevin Demoff“I think, much like the rest of the world, we have to get to a point in the NFL where one case does not shut down the NFL and one case doesn't shut down the world.” – Kevin DemoffStay Connected: Syd FinkelsteinWebsite: http://thesydcast.comLinkedIn: Sydney FinkelsteinTwitter: @sydfinkelsteinFacebook: The SydcastInstagram: The Sydcast Kevin DemoffWebsite: therams.com/team/front-office-roster/kevin-demoffLinkedIn: Kevin DemoffTwitter: @kdemoffSubscribe to our podcast + download each episode on Stitcher, iTunes, and Spotify. This episode was produced and managed by Podcast Laundry (www.podcastlaundry.com)

But, throughout his life, Porter's humility, resolve and sense of humor helped him climb toward a dream. In today's conversation, Zach and Porter cover topics from his incredible journey to the Kansas City Chiefs to finding spiritual balance during busy times - and can't help but talk sports in between.
