She has almost 27 years of experience working with the likes of Alicia Keyes, Bal Harbour Shops, Maserati, Swizz Beatz, the NFL and so much more – and she also created a program called The Enternship in 2014 to help women over 40 reinvent and reshift themselves. I was proud to highlight his work on the NBC groundbreaking and iconic The Golden Girls particularly since I refer to it often. Golden Girls, a sitcom ahead of its time. NBC took a chance on a show celebrating single older women living together dealing with issues not often addressed on TV at that time. A topic that needs more attention to this day. The conversation during the second segment turned to his life, his miraculous cure from crippling epilepsy, his grit, unwavering determination, relentless spirit, in order to pursue his life long goals and dreams. Jesse's story inspired me as I hope it does you. I left the conversation feeling a renewed energy level and a mindset shift as I thought about the my own issues and challenges. It's a must listen for anyone who has disability or doubts, unfulfilled hopes or dreams.

Happy National Coffee Day (if you are listening to this episode when it drops on Wednesday, September 29th).  I would gladly celebrate coffee any day of the year. I am currently enjoying a Hawaiian Coffee and am a bit hooked after our 3 weeks on the islands in summer of 2021.  Personally, I think the world could use a little more conversations over coffee with friends these days.  I chuckle a bit because that was the imagery I used when designing the intent of this show.  Like meeting friends over coffee and talking about family adventures.   Worth noting, I have found that I really enjoy podcasting and having conversation without all the ads and interruptions many podcasters use.  If you enjoy the ideas, find joy or inspiration from my work, you can buy me a coffee to say thanks and support the show.  If you want to go deeper with the content and/or get more engaged you can find additional ways to support the show through the links below.   Website for this episode: https://ordinarysherpa.com/045 Will you leave Written Review on Apple Podcasts:  https://ordinarysherpa.com/review/ Subscribe to the email List:  https://ordinarysherpa.com/subscribe/ Join the Ordinary Sherpa Facebook Group to interact with other listeners.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/ordinarysherpa The theme for today's episode is learning how to swim, not just in the physical sense but also in swimming through life.  Swimming seems like a good metaphor what people are experiencing.  Swimming through information, drowning with decisions.  In some ways we got dumped in the deep end of the pool and we're still figuring out how to swim.  But we all know Michael Phelps as the 23 time Olympic gold medal swimmer.  We will learn about the crazy adventure and the focus of his foundation which places an emphasis on learning how to swim.  I met Marissa several years ago, when Michael was the guest for the US Venture Open which was discussed in Episode 033 | Creating Memorable Experiences with Dawn Ruchala.  I had the pleasure of spending an entire day with Marissa and Michael and to say that I was impressed with their authentic generosity and humility is an understatement.  I have been around several people of fame and fortune in my life.  While each experience is a neat experience, I was never enamored by the encounter.  More often than not, I left the experience with a different taste in my mouth.  However, spending the day with this dynamic duo led to a much deeper connection beyond simple work acquaintances.   MARISSA FORTIER is the Managing Director at the Michael Phelps Foundation and has been working alongside Michael Phelps since 2003. She has been with the Foundation since it was founded in 2008 and helped develop the Foundation's signature IM Program curriculum in 2009, and piloted the program in 2010. The Michael Phelps Foundation has 3 pillars focused on water safety, healthy living, and pursuit of dreams.  Marissa lives in Maine with her husband, two daughters and dog.   Key Takeaways Go broke once in your life.  Having the perspective of humble means you learn to appreciate the opportunities in front of you. Never Say No to a new opportunity.  You can always go back.  You can always change your mind, but self selecting out of an opportunity, that opportunity won't likely come back. Epic adventure life is unsustainable.  At some point we all have to come down from the summit.   Slowing down allowed Marissa the ability to approach adventures more thoughtfully and make the adventures more meaningful overall. 2020 freed up space in her life to go through the stuff both physically and mentally.  It has allowed her to sit back and reflect They currently are waking up from the slumber and finding little sparks of adventure.  Perhaps you are waking up from a slumber.  What are the little sparks, mini adventures that light you up? We can only plan so much.  At some point, we need to let our kids lead the adventures.   Drowning is the #1 Cause of preventable death for children under the age of 4.  Swimming is a lifelong sport that has implications on overall health, well-being and safety.   Water has magical qualities and can heal in many ways.   MPFoundation offers 8 free lessons to address social and emotional strategies.  Head to their website www.michaelphelpsfoundation.org to download these resources.     To connect or follow Marissa Website: www.michaelphelpsfoundation.org Social Media: @mpfoundation /MichaelPhelpsFoundation

She founded GLAM+GO, a salon and blow-dry chain and membership program. Most recently, she co-founded Prospr at Work, a workforce management software platform for hourly and shift-based teams now used by some of the country's most recognizable brands to manage and connect their teams.David SiegelDavid Siegel joined the Los Angeles Sports Council and Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games as President and Chief Executive Officer for both organizations after a 22-year career with the LA Dodgers. He worked in every revenue producing department, most recently as Vice President of Global Partnerships after spending 10 years as Vice President of Ticket Sales. Under his leadership, the Dodgers achieved the highest attendance in Major League Baseball for five consecutive seasons.Santor NishizakiSantor Nishizaki is on a mission to create a happier workplace by helping organizations increase generational awareness and discover strengths that can elevate people to reach their full potential, something he has implemented in the boardroom as well as the classroom as he serves as the professor in multiple universities at an undergraduate and MBA level. Santor has served in leadership roles at both NASA and Disney Imagineering, where he was an integral part of the opening of Disneyland Shanghai. He'll be launching his first book this year, a guide on leading and working with Generation Z.CORE TOPICS + DETAILS:Jordan Harbinger[4:38] - Jordan's ‘Connect Four'Find the ‘dead' networking contacts and bring them to lifeJordan uses a method he calls ‘connect four,' where he scrolls down through his messages and finds four connections someone else might consider ‘dead'— no recent messages, no potential. Then he reignites those conversations, often to striking results. How can you ‘connect four' in your own career?[6:52] - The Power of ReciprocationMake people happy to help you by helping them firstToo many people try to get something out of a connection before they've put in the work. Your first question when building a connection shouldn't be ‘what can they do for me?' It should be, what can I do for them?Erika Wasser[11:26] - How Being a Leader is Like Doing Stand-upWhy standing up in front of an organization is like standing up in front of a crowdAs a leader or a standup, you're always taking risks, taking chances, gauging your audience and changing course. Whether it's fundraising or making quick decisions or leading a team, the basic skills of paying attention to how you're perceived is essential.[16:49] - Planning Doesn't Replace Doing“Sometimes you just have to do the thing.”Don't let perfect get in the way of good enough, because perfect isn't happening. You can plan as much as you want, but planning doesn't replace doing. Sometimes you have to get knee-deep in a problem before you can begin to figure it out.David Siegel[22:50] - Never Say No to OpportunityYou'll never have experiences if you don't say ‘yes' when they arriveIn the first seven or eight years of your career, just say yes to every opportunity. Elevate every project and teammate you're associated with and watch your skills, experiences, and relationships blossom.[25:32] - No ScoreboardsWhy measuring relationships with a ledger is a bad ideaDavid isn't a believer in doing things for others in the hopes they'll do something for you in return. Selflessness and relationship-building must be real, not put into place in order to get some benefit out of it. That's the only way truly powerful connections can be made and maintained.Santor Nishizaki[29:53] - Embrace Your Winning SpiritSometimes competitiveness is a powerful traitIn today's career market, we're often told to subdue our competitiveness and focus instead on lifting all boats. But if you're competitive by nature, sometimes your best move is to embrace that side of you to an extent— it can be a powerful motivator that pushes you to make impactful plays.[31:52] - Turn Your Worst Moments into Your Greatest StrengthsHow tragedy, frustration, and failure help us growAfter experiencing a terrible tragedy, Santor decided to grow up overnight. He used that moment as a springboard to propel him to a work ethic that can only be called ridiculous. He's channeled his passion, tragedy, and frustration into success.RESOURCES:[0:14] - The Power of Playing Offense[3:04] - The Jordan Harbinger Show[8:10] - GLAM+GO[8:18] - Prospr at Work[21:12] - Los Angeles Sports Council[28:17] - Disney ImagineeringFOLLOW:We'd love to hear your thoughts on today's episode. The biggest issue that my clients comes to me with is lack of desire. They have achieved so much in their business and life but find that they simply don't "want" it that much. And they want to want it. I mean don't we all? But we think that desire is this thing that just overcomes us and when it doesn't we are afraid that there must be something wrong. In this episode I begin to explore the topic of desire and offer one of my common practices called "Never Say No" which is aimed to help brake the mental habit of blocking desire and the action we take of "saying no" on autopilot.

Part 3 of the Moment Maker Dads month features a book conversation with Ross Manders...  "Never Say No" takes you on a personal journey to learn first-hand how Mark & Jan Foreman raised Jon and Tim of Switchfoot. They share practical advice for instilling wonder in a media-saturated culture, cultivating specific gifts, and balancing structure with individual choice. Our purpose as parents is the same as our child's: to live creatively beyond ourselves, bringing the love, beauty and nature of God to this world. Let the adventure begin. We are to raise kids with a dream and help them follow and chase after that dream Fostering an environment of courage and pushing our kids forward How much of my time is spent being intentional with my family? Their playbook for family values: Responsibility, persistence, resilience, patience, well rounded Technology is threatening childhood Toys - how do we encourage our kids to play creatively Be in closer contact to people who are hurting Raising up kids that stand out and are different and are agents of change "The calling for all children is to invade the sometimes scary world with the love, truth and goodness of the God that made us" Who do our kids see that we are? If our kids see that we care, they will grow hearts that care. As parents get to pass the torch of our faith' If our faith is mechanical, then our kids will think of faith in the same bucket as topics in school that they're forced to memorize Sticky practices - rhythms of connection moments - mystery waffles or Fried Egg Fridays Making the Bible come alive with a creative interactive piece Use all 5 senses to help the Bible come alive - this will help them remember it We become like the people we surround ourselves with I want to help my kids experience an awesome God and let them know that their Heavenly Father delights in them About Ross Manders: Ross and his wife Emily moved from Minnesota to Philadelphia, PA to plant Restoration Church five years ago. They have four amazing kids. Ross' goal is to help as many people as possible know God and love God and in that become more fully human.
