Two-time Olympian, two-time Olympic medalist and Speedo Athlete, Hali Flickinger, took the longest break of her career since winning gold (4×200 free relay) and silver (200 fly) at the 2022 FINA World Championships in Budapest. She needed the time to reevaluate life and what she wants. Swimming, when it was 100% of her focus, created to much stress and anxiety. Hali had touched the wall second in her individual events one too many times. That wasn't working, wasn't the goal, and wasn't making her happy. Something had to change. During her time off,  and that period of reevaluation, Hali sold real estate in Arizona and loved it. Last fall Hali slowly reentered training with Bob Bowman's elite pro group. When SwimSwam spoke to Hali she had no idea how this new life change would impact her performance. At that time Hali wasn't even sure if she would rest for Short Course World Championships. She, of course, did rest, though she feared she might not have enough of a base of training to finish her races. Ultimately, she did finished, and in spectacular fashion, winning gold in the 400 IM and silver in the 200 fly.  In sum, this new lifestyle is working.  If Hali's situation sounds familiar, you're probably thinking of her peer and old Georgia training buddy, Nic Fink, who prioritized graduate school, while continuing to train, and had the best year of his life becoming the 2022 Swammy Award Winner for Male Athlete of the Year.  Hali shares in this podcast how she traded texts with Nic about his journey and how it worked for him. Hali's on the same path now. At this point Hali's enjoying selling real estate and taking her training one day at a time.

Two-time Olympian, two-time Olympic medalist and Speedo Athlete, Hali Flickinger, has taken the longest break of her career since winning gold (4×200 free relay) and silver (200 fly) at the 2022 FINA World Championships in Budapest. However, she was not idle during her time-off. Hali's been building a career selling real estate. She got her license back in Georgia, and she got her license in Arizona–and she loves it.  Hali needed time away from the pool,  a mental health break, to recharge her swimming-batteries. She's back in the water now with Coach Bob Bowman, and while it's been rough getting back into elite shape, Hali's been okay with the process. She will not rest for her return to race-action on the FINA World Cup Series (her first World Cup appearance since 2011), and she may not rest for the 2022 FINA Short Course World Championships in December.  She's taking it day-by-day now with her sights set the 2024 Olympic Trials in Indy.

On Episode Eighteen of Mindful Warrior Radio, I'm joined by Adam Krikorian, a three-time Olympic champion, the head coach of the U.S. women's national water polo team, and former head coach of the men's and women's water polo teams at UCLA. In this episode, Adam focuses on bringing out the best in others—in athletes and coaches, alike—and describes the process of achieving and sustaining performance excellence at the highest level of sport. In short, winning is what Adam knows how to do. In his 17 years as a player and coach at UCLA, Adam won 15 national titles—11 as head coach, three as assistant coach, and one as a student-athlete. Now the head coach of the U.S. women's national team, Adam led the team to gold at the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Olympic games. Since being named head coach in 2009, Team USA has earned gold in 19 of its last 22 major international competitions (Olympic Games, FINA World Championships, FINA World Cups, and FINA World League Super Final Crowns). This is a remarkable 86% winning record! In this episode, our listeners will gain important insights into what it takes to build and lead a high trust, high performance team. They will see the wisdom of integrating a fierce competitive drive with humility and humor, and they will be inspired by Adam's commitment to lifelong learning.Adam and I explore the process of building and leading teams to achieve and sustain flow. Reflecting on his past experiences, Adam describes the role love plays in helping a team achieve flow. “When we are talking about a flow state in a team setting, you are adding so many layers and so many more dynamics to it. And I think the other thing that cannot be understated is if you want to try to get there, then there is so much love that has to be created within that group—there is so much unselfishness—that it's going to be difficult to find that flow state within the team setting if there isn't that love, respect, and trust that you have for one another. That's what makes team sports incredibly special.”We also discuss the importance of designing an environment to build a successful team. Adam highlights the value of consistency and discipline to create change and build team strength. “Pressure paralyzes. And when pressure is involved, bad habits blossom and they rear their ugly head. So, the environment we create in practice—and it can't be like this every day—but we need to find moments in our training where the team feels the pressure and has to deal with adversity because adversity always appears. It always shows up.”Purpose, people, and perspective are three key elements that help Adam navigate challenging and tedious times. Focusing on the larger “why” allows him to maintain focus. He says, “I need to go through all these baby steps: There is a reason to what we are doing. There is a purpose to what we are doing. The people that you are doing it with. Creating relationships through the journey…how important that is. Having the perspective. Knowing we are going through all of this—this monotonous stage—and that this is going to get us to this place. And it's not always about winning. It's about learning and growing. And understanding if you can have that perspective through the process, it can keep you dialed in and motivated.”If you enjoyed today's episode, please take the opportunity to share with a friend, follow Mindful Warrior Radio, and leave a review! To learn more about Mindful Warrior and Mindful Warrior Radio please follow us on Instagram @therealmindfulwarrior and check out our website at www.mindfulwarrior.com

He was a engineering graduate and MVP and all-league swimmer and water polo player at UC Davis. After a stint as a 1st Lieutenant and US Army Airborne-Ranger, he returned to UCLA for a Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology. While at UCLA he became a graduate assistant coach under the legendary coach Bob Horn; and the school won the first ever NCAA Championship ever held in 1969. From there he went on to Occidental College, where he transformed a water polo program that had been the league doormat, into league champions in both swimming and water polo. After coaching at Oxy for 4 years, he went on to UC Santa Barbara and turned the water polo program around; again producing a league champion team and a NCAA top-four finish in just three years time.It was at Stanford University though, that Dettamanti came into his own as a winning coach. In 25 years at Stanford, his teams played in the NCAA Championship final game a total of 14 times, producing eight NCAA Championships and six second-place finishes. He became only the second collegiate coach in NCAA history to record over 600 career wins, and the only collegiate coach to win NCAA Championships in four different decades, the 70’s, 80’s 90’s, and 2000’s. His eight National championships ties the NCAA record for the most in NCAA history, along with the legendary Pete Cutino of Cal-Berkeley. NCAA records include a .800 winning percentage at Stanford, a 52 game undefeated streak over a three year period in the 80’s, and two undefeated seasons (28-0 in 1981 and 36-0 in 1985).He has been named League “Coach of the Year” ten times and NCAA “Coach of the Year” six different times. Dettamanti has also had great success at the International level. He coached the USA World University Games teams to Gold and Silver medals in 1979 and 1981; the highest finish ever for a USA National team. Dettamanti gained valuable International coaching experience as the Assistant National Team Coach at the 1990 FINA Cup and at the 1991 FINA World Championships under Olympic Coach Bill Barnett; and as an USA assistant at the 2001 World Championships, under the top International coach in the world, Ratko Rudic.Dettamanti has not only produced winning teams, but also top international players. Fourteen of his players have gone on to play for the USA Olympic Team, including Olympic team standouts Jody Campbell (1980, 84, 88), Wolf Wigo (1996, 2000, 2004) and Tony Azevedo (2000, 2004, 2008). Several of his players have gone on to become successful coaches at the high school and college levels; and several have gone on to become nationally ranked referees as well. Dettamanti is an excellent athlete in his own right. He was one of the original pioneers in the sport of triathlon, placing 6th overall in the prestigious Hawaii Ironman in 1981, along with competing in many other marathons and triathlons during the early 80’s when the sport was just getting off the ground.

This week’s conversation is with Missy Franklin, a five-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time FINA World Swimmer of the Year.Missy retired from swimming in December of 2018 after an incredible career. In 2011, she established herself as one of the top swimmers in the world when she won five medals – three of them gold – at the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Missy won four gold medals and one bronze medal.Missy’s performance in the 200-meter backstroke broke the world record in the event and also marked the first time that an American had won the event in 40 years.Missy was named “World Swimmer of the Year" and "American Swimmer of the Year" by Swimming World Magazine and earned the ESPY for "Best Female Olympian "in 2013 and "Best Female College Athlete" in 2015.Missy brought home another gold medal from the 2016 Rio Olympics for her performance in the 4 x 200 relay but viewed those Olympic Games as one of the most challenging experiences of her life.A shoulder injury leading up to the games derailed her both physically and mentally and continued to hamper her in the years after those Games. And that’s something we touch on in this conversation.Missy shares how she dealt with the first real adversity she faced in her life and the depression that followed it.In Missy words:“It’s not about whether or not someone's gone through more than you or whether or not someone's lost more or gained more, it's just about being human together and knowing that we all experience these emotions based on so many different things.”And I think that's something really important to think about-- regardless of our upbringing, status, or fame, we all go through something, we all experience adversity. No one lives a "perfect" life but it's how we learn from those moments and help each other get better at managing them. ------Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support. Warp Five: A Star Trek Enterprise Podcast

Joelle Bekhazi Interview.     Captain Archer sometimes feels like the most blue collar Captain, drinking beer and watching sports. In the episode "Vox Sola," we learn about his love for water polo, which is a sport that doesn't seem to be highlighted in the spotlight as often as other sports.  Joelle Bekhazi was named to the junior national team at age 16, going on to compete at the 2005 and 2007 World Junior Championships. After moving up to the senior ranks, she helped Canada win silver at the 2007 and 2011 Pan American Games. Bekhazi was part of two major medal-winning teams in 2009 as Canada captured a first-ever silver in the FINA Water Polo World League followed by silver at the FINA World Championships. Among her individual accomplishments are being named to the All-Star Team at the 2010 FINA World Cup and earning MVP honours at the 2013 UANA World Championship Qualification Tournament. Bekhazi played collegiately at the University of Southern California. In her first year in 2009, the Trojans lost in the NCAA final but a year later they brought home the victory, making Bekhazi the first Canadian to ever be a part of an NCAA champion water polo team.  In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Brandi Jackola, Brandon-Shea Mutala, and Patrick Devlin speak with Joelle Bekhazi who is a member of the Women's Canadian National Water Polo team. We discuss the training involved, where she has traveled, and the most challenging game that she played. Chapters Intro (00:00:00)  Welcome, Boomers! (00:01:56)  Welcome, Joelle!
