There are just some things that only a mother can understand. Carrying a baby, birthing that child and then doing her best to raise the one entrusted to her is a never-ending labor of love and letting go. A snapshot story of one woman and her son from an ancient book of the Bible reveals the rich yet challenging realities of motherhood. The roller coaster ride of emotion as a mother is called to lay her heart's longing - and later her heart's breaking - at the feet of God captures our attention. In the end, her story reveals her to be a woman of relentless trust and authentic emotion. In her story, we uncover the stories of countless other women who are also called Mom.

Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 4:7-11 Above all, love each other deeply. . . . Offer hospitality to one another. . . . 1 Peter 4:8-9 In our church there was a small woman who had a big presence—gentle, generous, hospitable, loving. Anyone who met her experienced her loving hospitality. A friend of mine met her while visiting for worship with us one Sunday, and the friend aptly observed, “That woman—she's a jewel. You ought to clone her.” We all loved that dear woman. And that was because she loved us—so unassumingly, so generously, so gladly, and so very well. That love reached neighborhood children, brought meals to families at just the right time, sweetened committee meetings with delicious baked goods. She prayed for us too. Even when dementia had taken a lot from her and she wanted me to pray for her, she would also take my hand and pray for me. At that point her sentences didn't flow smoothly, but her prayers were moving, loving. Where does such love and hospitality come from? She loved well because she was loved. She knew the deep and wide and never-ending love of God. She experienced his Son-sacrificing, sin-forgiving, cross-bearing, death-defeating love in her faithful Savior. And out of that love she loved us! We can't clone her, but we can learn from her. We can follow her example—and by God's grace we can also be the hands and feet and voice and heart of Jesus—loving others with the deep, deep love of the Lord. Thank you, Lord, for your deep, deep love for us. Out of your love, help us to love each other deeply. Amen.

Welcome everyone! You're in for some deep nourishment today. Our conversation is with Ren Dara Santiago. We cover so many heart centered things in this conversation. We talk about how to dispel narratives through truly seeing someone's heart, building families, her work as a playwright, and so much more. Ren is a Big Sister first and foremost! Every space carries Beanie, Butchie, and Kaying. This Fila-Rican playwright was born in the Bronx, raised in Yonkers and Harlem at intersections of Coded Streets and Bodega Avenues. She's proud of her history and shares in the practice of uplifting the wisdom that comes from her community. From the originators and generators. From creators thriving despite the exploitation of our cultures, loved ones, systematic debts, and geographies. Ren writes stories that activate our potential for deep loving, for brave loving, for healing, for the hustlers. For people that work hard. For the real heroes, who deserve their lives to be honored in stories; complex, expansive, simple and great. Theater should give communities room to dream. To honor the unknowable, conjured by theater-makers of resilient lineages, offering us the opportunity to shift the limits of possibility. Ren is currently working with Rattlestick Playwrights Theater as the showrunner for the MTA Radio Plays, launching December 13th; and commissions with En Garde Arts, The Drama Club NYC, The Theatre Co, and New York Rep. Ren teaches playwriting at the National Theater Institute, MCC Youth Company, Williams College, and Williamstown Community Works. She is a founding member of Middle Voice at Rattlestick, a member of Rising Phoenix Rep. She's the recipient of the TOW Foundation 2020 Residency at Rattlestick, Rising Phoenix Rep's Cornelia Street American Playwriting Award, and the MCC Alumni Award. She's developed work with The Bushwick Starr, Cherry Lane Theatre, Clubbed Thumb, Gingold Theatrical Group, LAByrinth, The Lark Play Development Center, MCC Theater, Ojai Playwrights Conference, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Rising Phoenix Rep, and SPACE on Ryder Farm. www.rendarasantiago.com @rendsanti, @rattlestickny --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/britt-dorazio/support

In this episode of Conversations with Kelly you will discover that when we invest intensely in a relationship we will naturally grieve deeply when the relationship changes or is lost. Grief is a reaction to a loss while the loss is the event itself. This is an important distinction because when we view grief as an event, we naturally expect it to have a beginning, a middle and an end. Grief, however, does not know these markers; it is a lifetime reaction to a loss. Grief hurts our body physically and our soul emotionally. Listen in to learn and affirm what you can expect when you lose something or someone of significance. In time you can find comfort in knowing that eventually you will tell your grief, “It is okay to stay.”

Sermons at First United Methodist Church

1 Peter 1: 17-2:3 (CEB)17 Since you call upon a Father who judges all people according to their actions without favoritism, you should conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your dwelling in a strange land. 18 Live in this way, knowing that you were not liberated by perishable things like silver or gold from the empty lifestyle you inherited from your ancestors.19 Instead, you were liberated by the precious blood of Christ, like that of a flawless, spotless lamb. 20 Christ was chosen before the creation of the world, but was only revealed at the end of time. This was done for you,21 who through Christ are faithful to the God who raised him from the dead and gave him glory. So now, your faith and hope should rest in God.22 As you set yourselves apart by your obedience to the truth so that you might have genuine affection for your fellow believers, love each other deeply and earnestly. 23 Do this because you have been given new birth—not from the type of seed that decays but from seed that doesn’t. This seed is God’s life-giving and enduring word. 24 Thus,All human life on the earth is like grass, and all human glory is like a flower in a field. The grass dries up and its flower falls off,25 but the Lord’s word endures forever.[a]This is the word that was proclaimed to you as good news.1 Therefore, get rid of all ill will and all deceit, pretense, envy, and slander. 2 Instead, like a newborn baby, desire the pure milk of the word. Nourished by it, you will grow into salvation, 3 since you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Welcome to one of the most stripped-down episodes yet here on the podcast. No formal introductions. No poetry at the end. No calls to rate or review or join us in some other little pocket of the inter webs. Just a conversation between two women who are infinitely grateful to have each other. To share some blood and history and vision of the type of world we want to inhabit. As come into the holidays, with all the drama that can ensue…. At a moment where we, as a nation, are deeply divided and losing the ability to engage meaningfully and compassionately with those outside our ideological comfort zones… Where the larger tumult operating in the world seems endless and far beyond the scope of ordinary human beings… Sometimes, it is best to sit down across the table with someone whom you love. To break bread. Put on the kettle. Un-cork the bottle. Shut the damn devices down and remember what it is to share in something basic & beautiful with another soul. To move inside the cadence of Ease & Delight for a moment. Soak in the energy of kindness and enjoyment for a bit. I see you. I delight in you. I honor what is best and brightest and good in you. I pledge my ears, my hands, my heart, my body to you when you have need. My love for you is free and it is comes in the form of Actions, never just words. My life is bound up in yours. My joys and sorrows, as well. … This holiday, may we each be granted the chance to commune with those for whom these truths unfurl freely. Where this type of love overflows in great abundance and to whom we can say these things without pause or objection. May we practice Loving Deeply where it is Easy this week. So that, moving forward, we may flex this Love Muscle with the times, places & people - where it is hard. I wish you a beautiful week with those you love. May it anchor you inside that energy for the time to come.
