“I write African comedy” states our next guest, playwright and TV scribe Jocelyn Bioh. This tersely specific statement serves as a counterpoint to the usual "War, Rape, AIDS, Struggle and Strife” meme of the African experience. Jocelyn's “School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play” debuted at New York City's MCC Theater in 2017 and quickly became a darling of the New York theater scene; enjoying several extensions and productions across the country. Clearly, Africans can be funny. Jocelyn's talent and hustle now has her writing for Spike Lee, Leslye Headland and Disney to name a few. Whew. We're not sure how she had the time to rap with us, but she did and we're glad for it. Oh and Ghana jollof is the best. Just sayin'. The Gordon Davidson Award was presented to Seret Scott. The Gordon Davidson Award is bestowed annually by SDCF to recognize a director or choreographer for lifetime achievement and distinguished service in the regional theatre nationally. The Zelda Fichandler Award was presented to Kamilah Forbes. The finalists for this award are Carol Dunne, Seema Sueko, and Pirronne Yousefzadeh. The Breakout Award was presented to Jenn Rose. For 2020, the winner and finalists were chosen on the above criteria and directed or choregraphed digital work during the pandemic that made an impact.
Welcome everyone! You're in for some deep nourishment today. Our conversation is with Ren Dara Santiago. We cover so many heart centered things in this conversation. We talk about how to dispel narratives through truly seeing someone's heart, building families, her work as a playwright, and so much more. Ren is a Big Sister first and foremost! Every space carries Beanie, Butchie, and Kaying. This Fila-Rican playwright was born in the Bronx, raised in Yonkers and Harlem at intersections of Coded Streets and Bodega Avenues. She's proud of her history and shares in the practice of uplifting the wisdom that comes from her community. From the originators and generators. From creators thriving despite the exploitation of our cultures, loved ones, systematic debts, and geographies. Ren writes stories that activate our potential for deep loving, for brave loving, for healing, for the hustlers. For people that work hard. For the real heroes, who deserve their lives to be honored in stories; complex, expansive, simple and great. Theater should give communities room to dream. To honor the unknowable, conjured by theater-makers of resilient lineages, offering us the opportunity to shift the limits of possibility. Ren is currently working with Rattlestick Playwrights Theater as the showrunner for the MTA Radio Plays, launching December 13th; and commissions with En Garde Arts, The Drama Club NYC, The Theatre Co, and New York Rep. Ren teaches playwriting at the National Theater Institute, MCC Youth Company, Williams College, and Williamstown Community Works. She is a founding member of Middle Voice at Rattlestick, a member of Rising Phoenix Rep. She's the recipient of the TOW Foundation 2020 Residency at Rattlestick, Rising Phoenix Rep's Cornelia Street American Playwriting Award, and the MCC Alumni Award. She's developed work with The Bushwick Starr, Cherry Lane Theatre, Clubbed Thumb, Gingold Theatrical Group, LAByrinth, The Lark Play Development Center, MCC Theater, Ojai Playwrights Conference, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Rising Phoenix Rep, and SPACE on Ryder Farm. www.rendarasantiago.com @rendsanti, @rattlestickny --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/britt-dorazio/support

I'm excited to share a series of conversations with actresses who starred in Jocelyn Bioh's play, School Girls: Or the African Mean Girls Play. These interviews were recorded with students at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Maryland. This fall, I developed a program for Jewish high schools, which are majority White spaces, to explore plays by Black playwrights, to read and watch those plays, discuss the themes, expand the art they love, and perhaps most importantly, to interview Black actors and directors who have made those plays come alive in performance. This interview is with Mirirai Sithole, who originated the role of Mercy at School Girls' NY production at MCC Theater. Mirirai's theater work includes Suzan-Lori Parks' "The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World AKA The Negro Book of the Dead" and her TV work includes roles on "Broad City", "Russian Doll", and "Black Mirror". Mirirai won Lucille Lortel award for Outstanding Featured Actress and a Drama Desk Award for Best Ensemble with her School Girls' cast mates. Jillian Walker writes and often performs contemporary sacred texts for the now times. Her work creates space for healing and liberation; embodying remembrance for our ancestors and legacies. Often taking the form of plays, musicals, sacred lecture-sermon-concert gatherings, and self-reflective space, Jillian’s work pushes what we think of as genre and blurs the perceived boundaries between performer, audience and self. She draws deeply on her training as a dramaturg (MFA Columbia), Black Spiritual wisdom, and the ongoing work of black feminist thinkers to bring process-driven performance to life. Some of her works include: Sarah’s Salt. (developed at MCC Theater, Roundabout Theater Company; Honorable Mention for the Relentless Award; finalist for the 2019 Bay Area Playwrights Festival). Songs of Speculation, presented at JACK; and “Blue Ink: A Night with Jillian Walker” performed at Joe’s Pub. The new Off Broadway show "The Legend of Georgia McBride" by Matthew Lopez is a comedy about a young Elvis impersonator named Casey who’s barely making a living performing in a Florida Panhandle bar. With an empty bank account and pregnant wife, during the course of the play Casey makes a rather surprising career switch from struggling Elvis impersonator to successful drag queen. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood lets us know if "The Legend of Georgia McBride" is something to get all shook up about. The MCC Theater production directed by Mike Donahue with choreography by Paul McGill runs through Oct. 11 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre.
Robert Askins’s dark comedy Hand to God has already had two productions Off Broadway, at Ensemble Studio Theatre and MCC Theater. Now it’s making the leap to the big time, opening on Broadway’s Booth Theatre in the thick of the spring season. The show stars Steven Boyer as a troubled, but good-hearted teenage boy whose alter ego, an evil hand puppet named Tyrone, gradually wreaks havoc on his life. It’s pretty unusual for a play to have three separate New York runs. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood lets us in on what makes Hand to God so special — and so funny.

Laurie Metcalf talks about her role in Sharr White's play "The Other Place" at MCC Theater, and the challenge of playing someone whose mental faculties are diminishing in a non-linear play, requiring her to constantly leap between varying states of mind. She also talks about her embrace of theatre during her college years at Illinois State University, where she first studied German, then anthropology, before settling on theatre; being one of the original company members of the acclaimed Steppenwolf Theatre and her satisfaction with her day job during those early years; her Chicago breakout role in "The Glass Menagerie" and how that production fit with the company's reputation for "rock and roll theatre"; her participation in both the Chicago and New York productions of Lanford Wilson's "Balm in Gilead", and how she is still approached on the street by people recalling that show 25 years later; her regular returns to the Steppenwolf stage throughout her television run on "Roseanne" and other TV and film work; her opportunities to play Kate Keller in "All My Sons" twice -- both at London's National Theatre and Los Angeles' Geffen Playhouse; how The New Group's production of "A Lie of the Mind" "saved" her after the brief run of "Brighton Beach Memoirs" and the failure of its companion piece, "Broadway Bound", to open; her affinity for the play "Voice Lessons", which she'll be returning to for a third time; and the appeal of Steppenwolf's "Detroit", scheduled for Broadway in the fall. Original air date - April 27, 2011.
