At an animal hospital in the Northeast United States, a biologist takes blood from a sick loggerhead sea turtle named Honey Bun. Honey Bun。 This is one of the first steps scientists must take before treating and rehabilitating the turtle so that it can be returned into the wild. Cape Cod, in the state of Massachusetts, may have some of the largest numbers of turtle strandings in the world. The number of turtles that became trapped on Cape Cod beaches has risen over the past 10 years. That information comes from the Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. This year, volunteers found 829 turtles washed up on the sand. About half of them were dead, including some that were frozen solid. That number is nearly twice what workers found in 2016 and nearly 10 times more than 2008. Some experts think the number of washed up turtles is related to climate change. A paper published in PLOS ONE notes that there were more strandings of Kemp's ridley sea turtles in years with warmer sea-surface temperatures. It added that of the threats to turtle populations, “climate change may present the broadest threat for sea turtle conservation.” Over the past 10 years, many turtles have been moving north from the Gulf of Mexico into the warming waters of the Gulf of Maine. There, they feed on mussels, crabs and other sea creatures. Cape Cod extends into the Atlantic Ocean, serving as a kind of trap for turtles. When the waters cool there, the animals start to have health problems, like developing pneumonia. They have problems moving and eating. Bob Prescott is the director of Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and helped to prepare the PLOS ONE paper. He notes that the sea turtles “know how to leave, but the Cape is like a trap – a hook within a hook.” If the turtles survive, it can take months before they are fully recovered. Adam Kennedy is a biologist at New England Aquarium's sea turtle hospital in Quincy, Massachusetts. He says that when the turtles arrive at the hospital “they look like they are dead, especially in December.” Other experts argue that climate change alone cannot explain the increased number of turtle strandings. Jeffrey Seminoff heads the Marine Turtle Ecology and Assessment Program at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Service. He believes that the high number of strandings “probably results from the simple fact that there's more turtles.” Seminoff said that the recovery of the turtle population and “success of conservation efforts at the nesting beaches” could explain the higher number of turtle strandings. Kennedy, the biologist, said that he has mixed feelings when the turtles are released back into the wild. “It's bittersweet, because you spend so much time with them but ultimately every one of these guys getting back to the ocean helps the population.” Recently, Honey Bun – the turtle we met at the beginning of our report – and other turtles were taken to Florida. They were released into the water. Kelly Shaffer is with National Aquarium Baltimore, which worked with four other groups to organize the turtles' release. She noted that she feels a sense of “joy and accomplishment” at “being able to put them back out there.”

We love fan mail: text us with your feedback and ideasYacht marketing is undergoing a revolution, and Moby Maritime Media founder Oriana Schneps is leading the charge. Known for viral moments like NBA star Dwight Howard's yacht-to-yacht three-point shot, her agency is redefining how luxury vessels connect with potential buyers and charterers.Drawing from her background working with marketing guru Gary Vaynerchuk and her own yachting experience as a crewmember and on the TV show Below Deck Adventure, Schneps brings a fresh perspective to maritime promotion. Her journey began at the New England Aquarium, where as a high schooler she cared for penguins and joined research expeditions that sparked her passion for life at sea. This unique blend of promotion know-how, hospitality skills, and maritime knowledge eventually led her to create Moby Maritime Meda. In brief, it takes a marketing approach that transcends traditional yacht promotion. In fact, the core of Schneps' philosophy is treating yachts not as depreciating assets but as brands with inherent value. Rather than producing generic walkthrough videos focusing on salon layouts and stateroom configurations, she creates content showcasing experiences and destinations. When potential charterers can visualize a yacht's divemaster exploring underwater caves or see a chef creating culinary masterpieces, they remember those moments far more than standard features. Schneps also highlights the value of strategic brand partnerships with luxury products, restaurants, and lifestyle companies - creating mutually beneficial relationships that can generate additional revenue streams for owners. Whether you're considering selling your yacht, upgrading to a larger vessel, or attracting charter clients, her insights demonstrate how thoughtful marketing creates lasting legacy and memorable experiences that define what yachting is truly about. Holy crap, did that suck! The weather went from bad to worse yesterday…with rain, snow, thunder, lighting & then some. Had a HELL of a time cleaning my truck off this morning. Thankfully, there's about 13 hours of college basketball today starting at 11am to keep me occupied! In the news this morning, stories about a new scam making it's way around the state, a former Vice Chancellor gave unauthorized raises, the NFL draft in Green Bay is going to feature a "dive bar" experience, Henry Firearms is moving ALL of it's manufacturing operations to Rice Lake, and President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order to eliminate the Department of Education. In sports, we recapped last night's final "First Four" games and looked ahead at today's schedule in the tournament. Plus, the Bucks are taking on the Lakers tonight in LA and Aaron Rodgers will NOT be a Viking next season. Elsewhere in sports, the QBs that will be featured in the second season of Netlix's "QB" show were announced yesterday, and the Trump Administration has suspended $175 million in Federal funding to the University of Pennsylvania. Let you know what's on TV tonight and talked about today being the first day of Spring! Plus, it's "Hypothetical Thursday", so we asked each other some hypothetical questions. Jean's question for Brian was: "If money weren't a concern, where would you go on vacation?" Brian's question for Jean was: "If all animals could suddenly speak, would you still eat meat?" Cool story about the New England Aquarium building a retirement home for it's older penguins, and in other aquatic news…the fish doorbell is back! Brian has been a proponent of giving anxious travelers the option of getting anesthesia before a flight, and now it looks like that might become a reality in the future as people are getting put under before lengthy tattoo sessions. We went over some betting stats & info with the brackets starting today, and a new venture from the Bare Knuckle Fighting league is coming down the pipeline. Office Cora joined us this morning to talk about what's happening in the 715 this weekend, and also had a question for us on "Hypothetical Thursday". It was: " And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a sorority girl from Georgia who's going viral because of her mugshot, a woman in Texas who won $83 million in the lottery but is being denied her jackpot, some wannabe rappers that broke into a Jewish Temple, a #FloridaWoman who did something absolutely horrific at an airport, and some American tourists FAFO'd while in Ireland for St. Paddy's Day. As we dive into the science of octopus cognition and behavior we find the questions get more and more interesting. In a podcast episode, it was discussed how octopuses possess the remarkable ability to camouflage themselves, not only blending into their surroundings but also assuming alternate identities. For instance, the mimic octopus can imitate various critters, like a flounder, so convincingly that other flounders will chase after it. This showcases the octopus's exceptional skill in adapting its appearance for survival and hunting purposes. Another intriguing behavior highlighted in the episode is octopuses' cooperative hunting with other species, such as fish. Octopuses and fish can form partnerships where the fish signals the octopus to hunt together. The fish may lead the octopus to prey in crevices that the fish cannot reach. This cooperative hunting strategy demonstrates the intelligence and adaptability of octopuses in forming alliances to enhance their hunting success. Additionally, the episode mentioned octopus communities like Octopolis and Octatlantis, challenging the belief that octopuses are solitary creatures. These octocondos and octocities provide insights into the social dynamics and relationships among octopuses, showcasing their complex behaviors beyond solitary existence. Octopuses also possess remarkable abilities like mimicry, where they can imitate other organisms to deceive predators or prey. The Dumbo octopus, mentioned in the episode, is an example of a unique species with distinctive flappy ears, showcasing the diversity of octopus species in the ocean. Overall, the podcast episode emphasizes the intelligence, adaptability, and fascinating behaviors of octopuses, including their camouflage, mimicry, cooperative hunting, and social interactions. These characteristics highlight the complexity and intrigue of octopuses as intelligent and captivating marine creatures. The episode also shares the inspiring story of nine-year-old Heidi Bell, who took action to support ocean conservation after attending a talk about octopuses and sea turtles. Despite the lack of specific charities for octopuses, Heidi used her talents to create octopus-themed jewelry and sea turtle-themed items to raise funds for the New England Aquarium's sea turtle hospital. This initiative showcases how individuals of any age can contribute to marine conservation efforts by leveraging their skills and interests. Heidi's story exemplifies how anyone can play a role in protecting marine life by channeling their creativity and dedication. By crafting items related to ocean creatures, she raised awareness and funds for marine conservation. Furthermore, the importance of contributing to ocean conservation based on one's talents and interests is emphasized. Warren's platform, OctoNation, educates and inspires people about octopuses through various forms of content creation. Sy Montgomery's work as an author and advocate for nature and animals also underscores the significance of using one's passion to raise awareness for marine life. Overall, the episode highlights how individuals like Heidi, Warren, and Sy have made significant contributions to ocean conservation by leveraging their talents and passions. Their stories serve as inspiring examples of how everyone can play a part in protecting marine life through fundraising, education, or creative endeavors. The book "Secrets of the Octopus" by Sy Montgomery and Warren Carlyle delves into the fascinating world of octopus species, showcasing their diversity and unique characteristics. The authors highlight the awe-inspiring behaviors and abilities of octopuses, such as their intelligence, camouflage skills, and complex social interactions. Through the book, readers are introduced to a wide range of octopus species, each with its own remarkable traits and adaptations. Sy Montgomery and Warren Carlyle emphasize the importance of appreciating and protecting these incredible creatures. By sharing stories and insights about octopuses, the authors aim to inspire readers to develop a deeper connection with the ocean and its inhabitants. The book serves as a platform to educate and raise awareness about the wonders of octopuses, encouraging readers to see these creatures in a new light and foster a sense of wonder and appreciation for the marine world. Through their collaboration, Sy Montgomery and Warren Carlyle shed light on the mysteries and marvels of octopuses, showcasing their complex behaviors and interactions. By highlighting the beauty and diversity of octopus species, the book aims to spark curiosity and admiration for these intelligent creatures. "Secrets of the Octopus" serves as a tribute to the incredible world of octopuses, inviting readers to explore and celebrate the wonders of the ocean through the lens of these captivating creatures.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit public.substack.comRope, not the wind industry, killed the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale found dead last Monday, claim scientific organizations, the US government, and the news media. “This case highlights the ongoing threat right whales and other whale species have been facing from fishing gear entanglements for decades,” said Amy Knowlton of the New England Aquarium, which is working with the North Atlantic Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to identify the cause of death. But neither Knowlton nor anyone else knows if the rope killed the three-year-old female whale, who is known only as “5120.” Whales can live long lives with a rope embedded in their bodies. Indeed, nearly 90 percent of right whales have been entangled in rope at least once, and others as often as nine times. This young whale was first observed to have rope around her tail in August 2022.It's true that, in the past, rope entanglements were the primary cause of death for North Atlantic right whales, and late today, NOAA reported that “The necropsy showed no evidence of blunt force trauma.”But NOAA did not address whether high-decibel sonar, measured at illegal levels last year, played a role. Nor did NOAA establish a cause of death. “Cause of death is pending further histological and diagnostic testing of collected samples, which can take weeks to complete. As such, it is inappropriate for the New England Aquarium, which is participating in NOAA's investigation of the cause of the whale's death, to suggest that rope entanglement killed the whale before NOAA has completed its investigation. And this is particularly inappropriate since the threats to the whales have increased as boat traffic related to offshore wind development increased.

This is a true crime, local history, and storytelling podcast. I write about crimes, I set the scene, connect story themes, I talk about the things that happen here, in Massachusetts and New England. This episode is about sexuality, consent, sexual violence, murder, and defending a loved one's privacy in death. Listen with care.Episode 50, Lizzi Marriott: A Life So Bright, Dover, New HampshireLizzi Marriott would have celebrated her 30th birthday on June 10 this year. She will be forever 19. Returned to the earth and sea that she loved so much. Growing up in Westborough, Massachusetts, she went to Westborough High School, Class of 2011. Lizzi Marriott set her sights on becoming a marine biologist. She had a special love for the ocean and all of its creatures. Her college essay was about her desire to protect marine life, a passion that was sparked during a weeklong marine biology camp in ninth grade. Lizzi was passionate about a future in the field of marine science. Her love flourished as a volunteer at the New England Aquarium in Boston. She was often seen saving wildlife, whether it was a frog or a turtle, something crawling or slippery, she loved everything about it. The University of New Hampshire in Durham was her dream school So it is no surprise that Lizzi was ecstatic when she got into the marine biology program. She began her sophomore year in the fall of 2012. Tuesday, October 9, 2012, started out pretty ordinarily for Lizzi. She was a few weeks into her first year at UNH, loving her studies in marine science. She was working, making new friends. She told her aunt and uncle she'd be going out after class that night and would be home later. Lizzi went to her chemistry lab until 9:00. At 8:55 pm she sent a text saying she was going to visit a new friend, someone she met at her retail job. She had recently made friends with an 18-year-old who worked at Target, a woman named Kathryn McDonaugh who went by Kat. The two traded text messages and made a plan to meet at her Dover apartment to watch a movie. Lizzi would make the short drive from Durham to Dover, the fastest route would take 13 minutes.  Lizzi did not made it back to her aunt and uncle in Chester where she lived. While it did make them nervous, they tried to pass it off as a teenager enjoying a new friendship and staying up too late. They figured she'd just crashed at the friend's place. But when there was no sign of Lizzi on Thursday, everyone knew something was very wrong.
