It's MAGIC Magid! This week’s guest, former Lord Mayor of Sheffield Magid Magid – often referred to as Magic Magid – is the first politician to appear on the show, and what a joy it was to speak with him. Magid is an absolute powerhouse: arriving in the UK at the age of four as a Somali refugee, he went on to become Sheffield’s youngest ever Mayor, taking up the role in 2018 at the age of 28, and also the first Muslim person to hold the position. He later went on to be a Member of the European Parliament in 2019 ahead of the UK leaving the EU. To add yet another accolade to this list – Magid was named as one of TIME Magazine’s top 100 global rising stars of 2019. During our conversation, we discuss how taking part in a month-long drug trial saved him from a period of intense loneliness, to the power of the internet to forge connections with strangers during a pandemic. We also discuss the value of prayer for Magid, who says praying five times a day – as part of his Muslim faith – helps to facilitate his alonement. I hope you’ll find this conversation just as surprising and inspiring as I did. * Magid Magid's book, The Art of Disruption: A Manifesto For Real Change, is out now – order it on Amazon today. * My book, Alonement: How to be alone and absolutely own it, is available to order now on Amazon, Waterstones, Bookshop.org and all good booksellers. * Social media Instagram: @alonementofficial @chezspecter @magicmagid Twitter: @ChezSpecter @MagicMagid

How do you get the upper hand on a world you don’t yet understand? That’s the burning question at the heart of two striking debuts that scrape away the coming-of-age clichés, breathing through the aches and pains of growing up. With echoes of early Baldwin, Paul Mendez’s Rainbow Milk, one of the Observer’s top 10 debuts of 2020, mines the author’s upbringing as a lapsed Jehovah's Witness and, later, sex worker, to tell an intergenerational story of two men stalled at an impossible intersection of sexuality, spirituality and race. Derek Owusu’s ‘virtuosic debut’ That Reminds Me — the first novel to be released on Stormzy’s new imprint #Merky Books — pieces together the fragments of K’s short life, as memories of addiction, racism and trauma threaten to flatline an already faltering recovery. In this event recorded live at the 2020 Book Festival, join Owusu and Mendez as they interrogate the forces that seek to cast a shadow over the blossoming of young Black men in the UK today with former Lord Mayor of Sheffield Magid Magid - and fall in love with two writers soon to be on the tip of everyone’s tongue.
Fishing, level playing fields… as the scales tip the EU Trade Deal, will an arrogant Boris Johnson choose No Deal for the hell of it? The COVID vaccine is here but do we need to brace ourselves for “vaccine nationalism”? Special guest Magid Magid – former Lord Mayor of Sheffield and Green MEP – tells us about generational changes in politics, the green future, and what it's like when you're a migrant kid playing “cultural bridge” for your parents. And what do MPs' Spotify Wrapped lists tell us about the next generation of politicians? “If the Government don't get a deal, it will be a point of honour for Johnson not to return to the negotiating table next year.” – Ros Taylor“People in Brussels are sick and tired of this… They're in despair with the UK.” – Magid Magid“Brexit has changed European countries' attitude to the EU. We're not exactly bracing for a Frexit or a Swexit.” – Yasmeen Serhan“We've now arrived in a place where nothing short of No Deal will satisfy the Brexit ultras.” – Ros TaylorPresented by Alex Andreou with Yasmeen Serhan and Ros Taylor. This talk is from July 2018 by Magid Magid, AKA the Lord Mayor of Sheffield. A British-Somali activist and politician, his appointment attracted significant media attention, as he is the first Somali, the youngest-ever, and the first Green Party councillor to hold the role. For many Sheffield folk, Magid has been both an inspiration and a breathe of fresh air. In his talk, he reflects on how he’s used positive messages and creativity to connect with people on an emotional level. There is no doubt he’s been a champion of Sheffield and everything the city has to offer. Lord Mayor Magid demonstrates ways in which he has acted with the intention to connect and do things differently. Starting with the the squat. The 29-year-old is the youngest Mayor the city has seen. His inauguration photo, featuring ‘that squat’ went viral online and Magid’s now famous Doc Marten’s and yellow cap have appeared in newspapers and timelines around the world. ‘One of the ways I’ve tried to do things is really try and merge a political message or statement in a fun way, with an undertone of a serious message behind it…I’ve realised is it works’.
Magid Magid may have lived the most unconventional journey to politics there is. After leaving Somalia as a refugee, he arrived at Britain at the tender age of 5. After schooling and working long shifts at factories for cash, Magid eventually enrolled into university to study Aquatic Zoology. Apart from an exotic degree, Magid got a lot out of his time at university. He found a voice to speak out for things he believed in passionately, and eventually got elected as the President of the University Union. A strong believer in principle over politics, Magid joined the Greens party and quickly became an active member. Before he knew it, he would be elected as the youngest Lord Mayor of Sheffield (with quite a fancy inauguration). We trace Magid's journey and the challenges he's faced as a proud Muslim in politics. The Transit Lounge chronicles the journeys of people who’ve had a considerable impact on the Muslim world. In season 1, we hear from successful entrepreneurs, academics, scholars and politicians. Hosted by Mohamad Zaoud, each episode explores the highs and lows of our guests, and tackles the question of our time - what does it take to find balance when living a contemporary Muslim life. Mohamad Zaoud is a brand enthusiast and consults businesses and NGOs on brand & growth strategies. He’s currently the Manager of Digital Growth – EMEA, and formerly Head of Marketing MENA, at Al Jazeera Media Network where he’s worked on flagship brands including Al Jazeera and AJ+.
