What if a secret weapon in managing bipolar disorder isn't a new medication or a breakthrough therapy — but a brisk 20-minute walk? In this refreshingly honest and hilariously relatable episode, Gabe Howard, who lives with bipolar disorder, and Dr. Nicole Washington take on the least talked about pillar of bipolar stability: lifestyle management, and more specifically, exercise. During a recent bout of depression, Gabe's doctor “tricked” him into walking daily by describing it like a miracle pill. Spoiler alert: It kind of was. At first, Gabe thought the idea sounded like a total scam — and he didn't even own sneakers. (His first walks were in Doc Martens.) But over the past year, daily walks have become part of his recovery. In this episode, Gabe opens up about what finally got him moving, why he stuck with it, and how something so simple ended up making a real difference. Dr. Nicole, a self-proclaimed workout hater, shares why she still encourages her patients — and herself — to move, even when it's the last thing they want to do. From the science behind short daily walks to the mental health benefits for people managing bipolar disorder, Gabe opens up about what finally got him moving, how it changed his mindset, and why the smallest step forward can sometimes shift everything. "When somebody first mentioned going for a walk for bipolar disorder I thought what is this new age garbage? Like, I live with a serious and persistent mental illness. Going for a walk is not going to do anything. But I gotta tell you, I was wrong. Look, I'm not saying that it cures bipolar disorder. But I can say that it helps manage my moods." ~Gabe Howard, Host Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. He is the author of the popular book, "Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations," available from Amazon; signed copies are available directly from the author with free swag included! Among his many accolades, Gabe received an official resolution from the Governor of Ohio naming him an “Everyday Hero,” and had the distinct honor of speaking at Oxford University in England. Our host, Dr. Nicole Washington, is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she attended Southern University and A&M College. After receiving her BS degree, she moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to enroll in the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed a residency in psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma in Tulsa. Since completing her residency training, Dr. Nicole has spent most of her career caring for and being an advocate for those who are not typically consumers of mental health services, namely underserved communities, those with severe mental health conditions, and high performing professionals. Through her private practice, podcast, speaking, and writing, she seeks to provide education to decrease the stigma associated with psychiatric conditions. Find out more at DrNicolePsych.com. 1995 was a transitional year for what was known as “Alternative” music, as it started to become a melting pot of old and new styles in the post grunge world. Bands like Foo Fighters and Bush carried a little of the old grunge ideals, but with a more radio friendly style. Britpop and electronic based music started to become very popular. Huge albums from Alannis Morissette and The Smashing Pumpkins showed that songs about introspection, melody and evolution could be wildly popular. Also, with alternative bands having huge album sale numbers, Grammy wins and heavy rotation on MTV, the word alternative started to seem ironic. Alternative or indie rock had become mainstream and everyone had access, from angsty teens to their parents. Regardless of what it was called, the rock music of 1995 was still awesome. Call it alternative, or indie, or just rock. There was a plethora of styles, singers and bands to choose from and they were all very memorable. So this week we're making a 1995 alternative playlist of our favorites from a great year. So strap on your Doc Martens and fire up your favorite CD on your detachable face car stereo and let's jam out to some awesome music. Watch the best scene reading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiEeUQ6nzx4 Get to know the writer: What is your screenplay about? Shesafella, a modern twist on Cinderella, is about a kind-hearted teen forced into servitude by a ruthless stepmother and closeted stepbrothers, who defies the odds with help from her butch fairy godmother. At a Ball, she wins Princess's heart but vanishes, leaving behind a single Doc Martens shoe. Princess's Instagram posts spark a citywide search, and Shesafella must outsmart her family, reclaim her true self, and fight for her happily ever after. What genres does your screenplay fall under? Fantasy, romance, fairy tale, LGBTQ Why should this screenplay be made into a movie? Cinderella movies (Ever After, Ella Enchanted, A Cinderella Story) are beloved for their timeless themes: rags to riches, kindness over cruelty, and finding one's voice. But they've all followed the same blueprint—a girl meeting a boy. Shesafella flips the script. It's a girl meeting a girl, in a joyful, queer reimagining that feels both long overdue and perfectly timed. This is the inclusive fairy tale audiences have been waiting for. This week we continue our coverage of the Night Demon / Cirith Ungol run of shows through Europe in September 2024. We pick up the narrative with a stressful day of air travel from Italy to London, with flight delays and a long ride from the airport to the gig at the famous Underworld venue in Camden. The boys scrambled to set everything up in time, and were rewarded by a packed house on a Monday night. You will hear how a towering Rocky struggled with the low ceiling, how the merch queue was relentless all night, and how Brian got locked out of backstage without a wristband, The show and the afterparty were a big success, and the band looked forward to having the next two days off.Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. In this episode, Fr. Lorenzo chats with the Rev Canon Jaime Edwards Acton. Fr. Jaime is the rector of St. Stephen's Church in Hollywood. When he arrived, he knew that they had just a few years of money and that traditional methods of church financing would not work. Here, he tells us the story of how social enterprise made the difference.Reverend Canon Jaime Edwards-Acton has been the rector at St. Stephen's for over a decade and has helped build the parish into a vibrant, thriving ministry in Hollywood. More comfortable in jeans and Doc Martens than dress slacks and loafers, Rev. Jaime approaches the story of Jesus as an opportunity to share insight and to begin a conversation. After each sermon, parishioners at St. Stephen's are welcome and encouraged to respond and introduce interpretations of their own - creating a vibrant and multi-faceted spiritual interaction each and every week. Steve and Steve are back to talk about things that have been happening this week. They've been looking at stocks from the UK, the EU, and the US – not many have been doing well. Steve D has been listening to Patrick Boyle this week. There's a huge straight line city being built in Saudi Arabia – is that a good idea? Steve W has been reading The Wolf of Harcourt Street's write-up of MercadoLibre. Having talked about the stock a couple of weeks ago, did he learn anything interesting? It's earnings season in the US and – as usual – things have been kicking off with the banks. Steve W has the general overview. With investment banking up, loans flat, and charge-offs almost doubling, the outlook for the US is interesting. But which banks would the Steves buy at today's prices. Since it emerged on the public markets, Dr. Martens has been flinging profit warnings around like they're sponsored. And they've launched another one lately. The stock is down 30% as a result, following a boost on takeover optimism. But do Steve and Steve think things are actually going wrong for the company, or is this an overreaction? Shares in UK payment processor Wise have been falling lately as well. That's despite higher revenues, profits and solid customer growth over the last few months. Is Steve D concerned? Not really. Should he be? That's another question… ASML shares have also subsided as demand starts to normalise for its fancy semiconductor machines. The company still has a huge order backlog, though, for the next few years. Is this a buying opportunity in a company with a monopoly on an important growing industry? Or is there something else going on here? Phillip and Brian discuss the forgettable nature of AI music. Corporations' birthdays are an essential thing that we need to care about now. Also, an update on Lammers Law: everything eventually becomes an ad. PLUS: OSHA for the MIND?? Listen now.The Right to DisconnectKey takeaways:- Amazon is scaling back its Just Walk Out technology from its Amazon Fresh grocery stores. Due to technical limitations in grocery stores, it will be constrained to airports and small-format stores.- JPMorgan's use of customer transaction data for targeted advertising highlights the increasing importance of personalized content.- AI-generated music, such as that produced by Suno AI, may lack memorability but showcases the advancements in AI technology.- The "right to disconnect" bill in California reflects the ongoing need for work-life balance in an increasingly digital world.- Corporate anniversaries are becoming a popular marketing strategy and cultural celebration for brands.{00:11:41} - “People want the friction in their local community of chatting with their checker and chatting with people that are in line and living life in their community because they probably bump into people that they know, and it's part of their daily routine or their weekly routine or whatever to engage with the people in their communities as they go about doing their business.” - Brian{00:19:32} - “We all hate this idea, but the truth is that ads, good ads, and contextual ads add to a discovery mechanism in many platforms. Good ads heighten the experience of Instagram, I would argue. The good ads on Instagram make my experience of Instagram better. I think Instagram is a little bit worse if it has no ads because I discover things.” - Phillip{00:29:35} - “In my mind, this is as good as [AI music] will ever be. It doesn't only get better from here. Maybe the fidelity gets better. Maybe it can create stems. Maybe you can do more editing. Maybe you could go in and tweak things, and you'll have more creator tools, but it doesn't mean it gets more creative over time.” - Phillip{00:41:51} - “There's a really interesting amnesiac effect with this AI-generated music is it's incredibly forgettable. There's nothing remarkable or memorable about any of it. And I almost feel the same way about all AI-generated content. AI-generated art, AI-generated writing. There's nothing memorable or remarkable about it ever. The memorable thing is the discourse around it.” - Phillip{01:04:29} - “We are getting to a point now where we're hitting Norbert Wiener's prediction around "the world of the future will be an even more demanding struggle against the limitations of our intelligence, not a comfortable hammock in which we can lie down to be waited upon by our robot slaves." What we're bumping up right now against is pushing our minds further as far as they possibly can go, and there's a lot of burnout that's happening as a result.” - BrianAssociated Links:Check out Future Commerce+ for exclusive content and save on merch and printThe MUSES Journal is here! This week's book is all about learning how to stay Best Friends 4Ever from across the country, something we personally know a little about after moving so far away from each other :(. We read P.S. Longer Letter Later by Paula Danziger and Ann M. Martin, published in 1998. Main characters Tara*Starr and Elizabeth's only source of communication is snail mail as they write to each other about their problems of finding new friends, dealing with their changing families, and the complications of seventh grade. Discussions of topic include: preteen girl rage, our AIM screen names of the past, and great book outfit descriptions featuring Doc Martens. Plus, our own experiences of the hell that was middle school. We loved looking back on this piece of nostalgic “juvenile” fiction so much! The second to last episode of Rock And Roll War Stories! Michael recounts driving two hours to Daytona Beach, FL from Gainesville for a gig and forgetting his guitar, how a poorly considered one night stand lost him a brand new pair of Doc Martens, the time he drove Chuck Wicks' brand new Ford F-Series pickup through the night after a show listening to club music, dealing with a torrential downpour while blinding drunk in Indiana, an Air B&B with no heat in Chicago in February with Freddy Jones Band, and the time Jimmy the bassist for Jameson Rodgers nearly passed out and went deaf at a gig opening for Dierks Bentley in Nashville. And that's only part ONE!
A lot of brands name themselves "doctor" – but how many of them are named after actual medical doctors? Justin takes the wheel with a little quiz for Dr. Sydnee and the listeners on Dr. Pepper, Doc Martens, Dr. Teal, and more. Music: "Medicines" by The Taxpayers https://taxpayers.bandcamp.com/
With the colder weather on the way later this week, Dearbhail explored the history of Doc Marten shoes, with Michael Doherty, who owns 20 pairs of Docs, and by late-adopter, Aoife Barry.

Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast!Brian has been dabbling with technology whereas Blake's mind is going at a million miles a minute and he may just be losing his mind. This is the result of caffeine abuse and Brian is confused. Blake has been to see a punk band which leads to a debate about the best looking Les Paul ever. Whats the most annoying injury you can have as a guitar player? Richard has a theory and expounds upon it.Richard found himself not just attending but also presenting at a masterclass with Wampler Artist (and friend of the show) Andy Wood - and so the self titled 'English King of Fuzz' expounded on his knowledge. He also got to look at a very special Les Paul and tells us all about it. There was a really cool coincidence and there was really hot Indian food and a secret jam may or may not have taken place with the Electric Love Aquatone. The guys have discovered a new guitar gimmick and they discuss the merits of it and Brian has a number of product ideas. Richard apologises to the Big F as he was given a bum steer on some information about the Tone Master Pro. He also has some further DIY questions for Professor Wampler and so is schooled in a methodology that may or may not serve him for life. Brian saw some UFOs and has a minor Patreon update. Airnold Schwarzenegger reads the credits. Doc Martens, Cheap pedalboards, Bobbins, The Iron Horse pub, Megadeth, The Martinsville glove, Tractor Racing...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone! This episode is sponsored by the fine folk at Stringjoy.comThanks to all our supporters - you are awesome! We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Merch and DIY mods:https://modyourownpedal.com/collections/booksFind us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show
Ever wondered how a simple handkerchief or a pair of Doc Martens can tell a captivating story of identity and preference? Brace yourself for an enlightening journey through the intriguing world of non-verbal communication within the LGBTQ+ community. This episode promises to deepen your understanding of this lesser-known aspect of queer culture, commonly known as flagging. Discover how a color-coded bandana or the pocket it's tucked into can signal different preferences, and how earrings and keys play their part too. We also explore how flagging has evolved with pop culture influences, specifically hip-hop, and its role in the often delicate process of coming out.But that's not all! We also decode modern signaling trends you may have noticed but never understood. Carabiners, not just for rock climbing anymore, are now a proud symbol of the lesbian community. Doc Martens, a fashion statement for some, for others they're a subtle indicator of non-heterosexuality. Even nail polish isn't just about vanity, but can signal relationship status. Ever seen an upside-down pineapple and wondered why it's upside-down? Well, it's a sign of polyamory. And who would've thought that the color of a Loofah could carry a special meaning in certain adult communities in Florida! Prepare to have your mind blown as we reveal the hidden language of symbols within the LGBTQ+ community. We have a packed episode for you today. First, we begin by looking at Bjorn Lomborg's fascinating Wall Street Journal Op-Ed titled: “Climate Change Hasn't Set the World on Fire”. You've seen all the hysterical headlines touting how the future of humanity is doomed and apparently how the whole world is on fire. We discuss Lomborg's very intelligent and rational examination and refutation of all this madness and crazy hysterical, apocalyptic headlines. Then, we look at the possible motivation behind the media coverage of the murder of two gay men. Furthermore, you would think that the pure disaster that happened with Bud Light would have taught CEOs all over the world, you know, not to push trans-madness, but Doc Martens has decided otherwise and we're here to discuss all that and more. Last but not least, Trump has been indicted again and we welcome Greg Price, former daily caller journalist and current director for the State Freedom Caucus Cetwork, to bring you the truth behind this most recent indictment. The Left doesn't care about due process anymore. They're just throwing anything at the wall with the hope that it'll stick. This is an episode you won't want to miss. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ap-scoop/message

You may not know that I grew up a punk rock kid in the late 80's but that's a fact. My hair transitioned through lots of colors, my Doc Martens were original and my weekends full of hardcore shows at small venues near and far. What I learned in those formative years, as part of that scene, shaped much of my core identity and values that live through me still. Today's guest similarly came of age in mosh pits along the eastern seaboard from Washington D.C to Boston, taking the pole position for women and becoming a matriarch within the fan culture. Author, award winning teacher and punk rock maven Nancy Barile grew up promoting all ages hard core shows in Philly on Sunday afternoons before it was a thing…she's actually why it's a thing so you can thank her directly for that. Having spent the past 28 years teaching English Language Arts to public school children outside of Boston, Nancy is here to share with you the most important life lessons the world of punk taught her and teach you how you can apply them to your own life-even if the music isn't for you ;) Her book “'I'm Not Holding Your Coat: My Bruises and All Memoirs of Punk Rock Rebellion” chronicles her experience as a woman at the leading edge of a musical and social movement full of (young)men. This week on the podcast we are joined by... no one! That's right, on this episode Jonah and Vanessa are reminiscing about the phenomenon of going to shoe stores as a kid and trying on shoes the old-fashioned way. We also discuss real-life current shopping experiences at malls, the time Jonah accidentally wore Vanessa's Doc Martens to school and are Vans just cooler versions of Keds? We also get deep into the history and demise of the Reebok Pump, although we still aren't sure if they actually do anything other than look cool. But that's not all. We also play a round of a game called CEO TAKEDOWN: THE SHOE IS ON THE OTHER FOOT, where we examine some statements made by Foot Locker's CEO about online shopping versus going to the mall to try on shoes and explore if the company has enough "runway" and "brand awareness" to offset the inevitable demise of mall culture. (Spoiler alert: Jonah doesn't think so although he would consider a leadership position on the company's board of executives should that opportunity become available.)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Break out the Manic Panic and Doc Martens because this week we dig deep into nineties fashion with musician Alicia Bognanno aka Bully. We talk about our experiences taking foreign languages in high school, respective anxiety dreams and the year Jonah and Vanessa took a French class together despite the fact that he was two grades ahead. We also dig deep into the history of belly button rings, discuss whether they're making a comeback and share other piercing stories from our adolescent years. Finally, we play a round of BACK TO THE PRESENT where we reminisce about now-defunct mailorder catalogs ranging from Carvin Guitars (Jonah) to Delia's (Vanessa) as well as those Best Cuts catalogs where you could pick out your future hairstyle (Alicia). Did Jonah actually visit the NYU school of dentistry and have college kids work on his teeth in order to save money? You'll have to listen to this episode to find out—and while you're at it you should also pre-order Bully's upcoming album LUCKY FOR YOU, which comes out on Sub Pop Records on June 2nd.
