In this episode of the podcast, we explore the Zone System for perfect exposure and Zone Focusing to get perfect focus. I'll explain how understanding and using this system enhances your ability to capture scenes exactly as you envision them. By the end, you'll see how these classic techniques can simplify your photography, even in today's digital world. The Big Ideas:Commit to the Basics: Embracing photography fundamentals like the zone system can dramatically improve your photos' quality. Mastery of basics sets a strong foundation.Prioritize Your Subject: By focusing on properly exposing the main subject, you naturally draw viewers' attention to the heart of your photograph. Balance the shot around this principal element.Depth of Field Mastery: Understanding and implementing zone focusing can help you achieve tack-sharp images without relying solely on modern autofocus, especially in dynamic settings.Blend Old with New: Integrating traditional techniques with modern technology can offer a richer photography experience, merging tried-and-true methods with instant digital feedback.Photography Action Plan:Learn the Zone System: Research online tutorials or read Ansel Adams' books to deeply understand the ten zones and their applications. Practice by choosing a high-contrast scene, note light meter readings for different zones, and adjust your camera's exposure settings accordingly.Apply Spot Metering: Switch your camera to spot metering mode and focus on critical elements like skin tones or key details. Experiment with taking readings from different parts of a scene to understand light distribution.Practice Zone Focusing: Use a depth of field calculator to set manual focus distances for typical shooting scenarios. Practice focusing on stationary objects in your backyard to get comfortable with various depth of field settings before applying them in a live shoot.Capture Movement: Set up shots in a dynamic environment (like a busy street or dance floor) and manually preset your focus distance to capture sharp images amidst motion. Review your photos to determine the optimal depth of field for similar future situations.Evaluate and Share: Review your images critically, comparing shots with different exposure and focusing techniques to assess improvements. Better Fuji Photos Episode 37: Staying in Manual Focus All the Time Are you currently using the "traditional" back-button focus (BBF) technique where you're in autofocus modes but using the back AF button? Or have you tried BBF but didn't like how you had to permanently disable autofocus with the shutter button? This alternative may be a better solution for you. Staying in Manual Focus mode all the time but using the back AF button to get quick autofocus when you need it can give you the best of having all of the amazing manual focus tools but also instant autofocus when you need it. Flip the focus mode switch to S or C if you need to track something or go back to the "shutter button autofocus" mode without changing any other settings buried deep in the submenus. A few notes: Set the behavior of the back AF button while in MF mode in the AF/MF Setting menu > Instant AF Setting If you were using the "traditional" BBF setup but want to try this, remember to re-enable the shutter autofocus function in the Button/Dial Setting menu > Shutter AF Learn more about your specific camera in our camera tutorial courses: https://photocourses.link/cameras Fujifilm Photographer Membership: https://photocourses.link/fujimembers.

We're back with another fascinating installment of the world's most popular open source film photography podcast! For Episode 29, we dig into the vault and bring back a guest from the very first Cocaine and Waffles episode, mister "Sexy" himself, Cheyenne Morrison! As always, Cheyenne doesn't hold back with his unique blend of colorful commentary on recent pickups like his Nicca III-L, Texer SR, and AGFA Isoly IIIa. Joining him are returning guests Mark Faulkner, James Allen, and Jess Ibarra and new guest Andrew Smith who discuss with us a number of interesting cameras. We go deep into the world of early auto focus SLRs, cameras with bottom "trigger" film advances, and shooting very expired film. As always, many of the topics discussed on the Camerosity Podcast are not planned, and this time we go pretty deep into the world of repairing cameras, and how dire things have become with the number of skilled technicians who are either retiring or dying, leaving no one else to take their place. Cheyenne makes a very plausible, yet very sad prediction that in 10 years, there will be no one left alive who can CLA a Contax rangefinder. Yes, we have new talent like Jess Ibarra to share her thoughts on learning camera repair, but there's only so many cameras one person can master, so if you have a camera you'd like to one day get repaired, NOW is the time! Be sure to mark your calendars for our next episode in which we will talk to a number of current and former camera store employees, who will share their stories of what it's like working in a film camera store now and in the past. Good camera stores are like camera techs, they are getting harder and harder to find, so it should be an interesting episode hearing these stories. If you'd like to join and ask some questions, be sure to look out for our next show announcement for Episode 30, which will be recorded on Monday, July 11th! This week Steve tells a story about using manual focus with live view when it was too dark for his autofocus to work. It was hell. Dustin talks about video lights and we wonder if he's even a photographer anymore. We talk about some Canon, Sony, and Fuji Fast Glass stuff. Also, "They Took Our Jobs!" That's right! We have an in depth and intelligent discussion of the new Skylum software coming out, Luminar AI, that isn't just Steve trying to get Dustin to repeat a line from South Park while Dustin clearly has no idea what Steve is talking about. It's very intelligent. Also, Steve explains Dorian Grey to Dustin, kind of... Beer Talk: Dustin - Some Canned Old-Fashioned thing that doesn't even have actual whisky in it Steve - Elijah Craig and coke and then also a Munsterfest from Three Floyds because it's been a hard few weeks so stop judging me. Q&A: If a photographer hires you to second shoot but never tells you where to be to second shoot, should you just leave and drive to the area to be there on time in case they do give you an address at the last minute? If a former groom gets married a second time wearing the same clothes as when he got married a few years ago while you were shooting his wedding... do you comment and mention that it's the same clothes? Dustin talks about Tenet. Steve talks about I'm Thinking of Ending Things. They're both disappointed. Also, Dustin doesn't understand how acting works. The autofocus capabilities in today’s cameras are amazing, so why would anyone buy a lens that offers only manual focus? Jeff and Kirk talk about situations where autofocus isn’t a consideration, such as buying inexpensive fast lenses or using an adapter to mount one brand’s lenses on another brand’s camera (like Nikon lenses on a Fujifilm body). We also chat about Jeff’s just-released book, The Photographer’s Guide to Luminar 4. Does your inner voice regularly berate you? Do you have a hard time turning that monster inside your head off? Do you say things to yourself that you would never say to a friend? This week we are going to be talking to my friend Alicja Colon, who is a designer turned photographer and illustrator. She is a mom of three and a wife. Her faith is a critical part of her life and her freelance business. She worked for many years with Focus Lab in Savannah and in September of this year went out on her own. This week I am excited to introduce you to Alicja Colon, a paper artist illustrator, designer, and photographer. Alicja has taught workshops, given talks at conferences. She also has a podcast called Manual Focus. On top of all that she is a wife and mom of three, and in September she quit her full time gig to go out on her own. Talk about wearing a lot of hats! Alicja will tell you her biggest struggle has been her negative self-talk. This episode will dig into how she has been able to wrangle the inner-voice monster and turn it into a cheerleader instead of a beast that lords over her feelings and thoughts. The Digital Director is here! Digital Director is the only Apple Certified interface that helps you to intuitively manage the entire photo and video workflow via a tethered iPad solution with Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras. Complete and Intuitive Workflow Control Photographers and videographers can now enjoy a more detailed, enhanced control interface thanks to a much bigger and higher quality display: indeed, Digital Director turns the iPad Air in to an external monitor taking full advantage of its High Definition Retina Display. The dedicated Digital Director App enables all the key parameters of Canon and Nikon DSLRs to be monitored and dynamically modified in real time (Exposure, ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, Manual Focus, WB, Image Quality, Focus Camera/Drive Modes, Battery status), allowing photographers and videographers to concentrate on creativity instead of settings. Shooting remotely via the iPad Retina Display, the App enables real time "Live View" monitoring and adjustments. The dynamic histogram and audio level display allows greater control, whilst the Focus control is guaranteed thanks to the Interactive Focus, which can be used to select the focus point anywhere on the screen. The digital zoom magnifies the selected focus point to ensure crisp accurate focus. Quick and Smart Check and Post-Production Thanks to Digital Director, users will have total control of their workload plus the possibility to download the images to the iPad and check the high-resolution files. All the characteristics of the image, such as the focus, can be checked simply using standard iPad ®gestures¯. Digital Director also allows users to intuitively manage post-production activities from the iPad: within the App, it is possible to work on the image, cropping and rotating it, modifying exposure, contrast and brightness, checking histogram and Exif information, rating and saving the image. Users will also have total control of their files, from image ratings to file organization (albums, shoot profiles and connection profiles). Immediate Contents Sharing Digital Director allows users to immediately share their images, direct to FTP, by E-mail and on social networks.

Mirrorless camera design has had a big impact on the way we take pictures. The original thing that attracted me to mirrorless was the idea of being able to get an adaptor and use lenses from my old 35mm lens collection with my camera. And it couldn’t be easier. Because there is no mirror in the design, mirrorless cameras use electronic viewfinders. Because you’re composing your image with a screen, there is more you can do with assisting technology imposed on the screen to make your life easier. Confusing? Yes. The first time I used a mirrorless camera I hated it. It felt like a gimmick with all the stuff on the screen. But after sticking with it and applying some of the techniques that I use to shoot video to still photography – it actually works. And if you set it up right its MUCH easier to use than a DSLR, particularly with manual focus lenses.
