Dehydration is one of the most common preventable medical conditions in the world, and yet for something so common, most of us are unaware of its dangers. 75 percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated. In this episode I review a few of the highlights from the book, Your Body's Many Cries for Water by Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, M.D. Dr. B's message to the world is, "You are not sick, you are thirsty. Don't treat thirst with medication." This episode is a 2014 recording where I tell a story about how self-driven research online led to an awakening and reconsideration of previously held beliefs. My thesis for this assignment was essentially: the internet and technology wakes people up. Couple the internet with the recent 2 year pandemic and from my view, the "mass awakening" all the conspiracy theorists were talking about in 2012 is happening. Still to this day I believe in the power of ideas. There's a quote from V for Vendetta: "Beneath This Mask There Is More Than Flesh. Beneath This Mask There Is An Idea. And Ideas Are Bulletproof." Adam's new film, Godspeed Los Palacos Godspeed, Los Polacos tells the story of five kayakers on the edge of adulthood who skillfully pull the strings of the Soviet system, and find themselves on a kayaking expedition in the Americas with a six-wheeled military truck, homemade equipment, and little to no whitewater skills. The story follows their epic two-year journey that culminates in the record-breaking first descent of the world's deepest canyon, and finds the kayakers in Soviet cross-hairs after they leverage their newfound fame to fight for democracy in the Eastern Bloc. Opportunities are often disguised as challenges. It's often unclear in the moment- a setback is not a pleasant experience, but with an optimistic mindset and openness to life's lessons, anything is possible. Today's guest embodies this truth, and tells the story of how two significant injuries opened the door to the cold water. 2 years later, my guest Lewis Radow hasn't missed a single day. Cold water is Lew's favorite tool to find stillness, train resilience and navigate difficult times. Today, I'm fortunate to get to tap into some of his knowledge and hear about cold water's transformational power. Not only is Lew's glass blowing absolutely next level, but you might have a shot at winning one of his weekly giveaways. AND, if you're willing to hike to an alpine lake or mountain summit, you can go hunt for some of the glass that he stashed for you to find. Lew on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lew_glass/
Unfiltered, all over the place, but from the heart- today's episode is my first solo episode, recorded from the rooftop in Bucerias, Nayarit after two margaritas gave me the courage to press record. The question I address is: what do you do when you feel like you don't fit in? I explore this topic, bounce all over the place and ultimately land on a few conclusions that I hope will encourage you to speak your mind thoughtfully and stop self-censoring. Now is the time for open discussion and honest opinions to be shared. Here's a look into my story, how I started to think with an open mind and question widely accepted narratives. Enjoy :)
Dr. Aaron Roughan joins the Symphony Podcast to discuss regulating the nervous system. Check out the Symphony podcast if you haven't already, it's a different format than ACP, usually under 30 minutes and on a specific topic. The Symphony Podcast releases an episode every Monday. The way we move, and the way we align ourselves in space directly impacts the way we feel and the way we perceive the world. Dr. Aaron Roughan is a chiropractor certified in Applied Kinesiology, with 20 years of experience studying topics stress, trauma, movement and the mind/body relationship. His passion for helping others and lifelong learning come together in his practice in Sayulita, Mexico, where he teaches classes and hosts workshops as well as works with clients one on one. Dr. Aaron joins the Symphony crew to talk about regulating the nervous system. By establishing a basic understanding of the autonomic nervous system, how the body holds emotions, and the impact the modern lifestyle has on our multi-million year old brains, we can begin to answer the question of what can be done about it. Dr. Aaron shares an immense amount of information, knowledge, practices and resources so if you're interested in this topic, make sure to have your notebook ready! When we trick our nervous system into spending too much time in a sympathetic state (fight or flight) through a constant stream of notifications, news updates and triggers we don't allow the body to rest, recover and detox, leading to a host of issues down the line. Our physical and emotional alignment helps regulate our nervous system and manage stressors. We also discuss the importance of play, immersing yourself in nature, creating neuroplasticity, and how feeling aligned and capable in your body enhances your mental health and self perception. UPDATE: Since recording this interview yesterday, June 3rd, 2021, the RCMP (Canadian police force) breached the Waterfall Gate, a critical location for preventing the logging and road blasting equipment from moving further up towards the headwaters in Fairy Creek. We are publishing this without knowing what could happen next. Ten RCMP got past the gate in plain clothes, dressed as backpackers… almost unbelievable that they would go to these lengths to cut the last old growth trees in the island. Every single person who shows up to camp, donates to the gofundme, makes calls, sends emails, and gets involved in what's happening is contributing to protecting these trees. Show Notes: Fairy Creek is the last high-production old growth forest in in Pacheedaht First Nations territory, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. 10-15 feet thick, well over a thousand years old, these trees are the treasures of Vancouver Island's lush rainforests; only 2% remain standing, and if the saws keep running, it's a matter of a few years until they are completely gone. My guests today, Carole Tootill and Joshua Wright have been instrumental to what has become one of the longest protests in history, the Fairy Creek blockade. 300 days of direct action, 160+ arrests, and thousands of supporters (now almost 50k followers on IG in less than 10 months)… There are always two sides of an argument, multiple perspectives to consider and stakeholders to appease. All the forest defenders are asking for is a civil, open discussion. A recent poll in B.C. reported 92% of people disapprove of logging old growth. It is not necessary to cut old growth, but "they do it because they can." - Carole "As long as there are human beings on this planet, there will be a demand for wood, pulp, and other forest resources, and there will be businesses that endeavor to meet that demand. Furthermore, those people who live and work in forests will always need to feed their families and put a roof over their heads; the stark inequities in our global economy increase the economic desperation that fuels illegal logging and poaching. The only realistic way to conserve our forests is to apply sustainable forest management practices—a conservation-and-livelihoods approach that the Rainforest Alliance has led since the late 1980s, and one that's already proven successful on nearly half a billion acres of land around the world." As Elder Bill Jones said, “We now must give a gesture to our Great Mother by saying no. The whole world is being run on a colonist extraction economy and it's at the end of its “sucking” I call it. There are no resources left. I think we are trying to save the last remnants of our own sensitivities. Once the old growth is gone, there is no connection to our historic past.” Links: Fairy Creek Blockade on Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/fairycreekblockade/?hl=en Rainforest Flying Squad Links: https://linktr.ee/TheRainforestFlyingSquad GoFundMe: https://gofund.me/2b337bc5 May 30, 2021 Article: https://www.saanichnews.com/news/solidarity-for-indigenous-claims-over-tree-forest-lot-46-builds/ To contact Kyle, visit kylehuber.com or https://www.instagram.com/adventure_creator

Last spring William Duvall loaded up his full-size pottery wheel and 100 lbs. of clay into his car and set out on a mission. His goal: drive from Seattle to LA, then head east, making pottery in the most scenic and creative places along the way. His coast-to-coast-to-coast trip lasted several months and resulted in more than just an incredible experience. Using video and time-lapse, William documented his process and shared the adventure with his online community, family and friends. Today, William calls in from Helena, Montana where he is assisting another potter with production, learning in an apprenticeship manner. We talk about his road trip, how he got interested in pottery, the importance of having a craft, and a lot more. How we met: William is part of the Lewradoo lineage- Lewis Radow, who was the 5th ACP episode guest introduced me to Hunter Goodrich (episode 26). Hunter and William grew up together and remain close friends to this day. I mention this because it's a testament to how collaboration and connection with one person can lead to more opportunities, cool people and knowledge.
Ben Dhiman is a writer, adventurer and storyteller. Growing up in Ohio, Ben felt like his lack of experience prevented him from having something to say. So he packed his grandfather's backpack and thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail. He caught the adventure bug and spent most of his 20s working intensively to support his trips around the world. As you'll find out, Ben's version of "adventure" is a little more intense than what you might be used to. We also talk about his experience living off the grid in Hawaii as well as traversing the Himalayas on foot, intentionally seeking high mountain passes to increase the challenge. All in all I learned a lot from Ben and am so stoked for you to hear Ben's stories too. We Are All Souls As one of Guadalajara's first female long boarders, Alondra Gonzalez Orozco found a community that nurtured her soul and allowed her to align with her values. We talk about some of the pivotal moments that allowed her to become her current self, seeing others as souls regardless of identity, surrounding yourself with positive energy, differences between US and Mexican culture and how our adventure in Nayarit has been this year (Alondra is my partner for those who don't know). One of the most powerful understandings Alondra has taught me is that seeing others as souls allows us to have more empathy and compassion for one another. We are much more than our gender, profession, religious affiliation or whatever it might be- we are spiritual beings having a human experience. All in all I enjoyed this conversation and I think it begins to shed a light on who Alondra is.
Podcast update, 12/25/20 My hard drive failed and I'm currently in Quintana Roo, Mexico, so I am not able to publish 2 recent ACP episodes. Hopefully the data recovery folks can help me out but I am not optimistic. It's likely I lost almost all the footage from my 3 months in Mexico and a handful of Symphony Podcasts… Brutal, but things could be worse. My mom always says, "bad things happen so worse things don't happen." I don't see how that applies to this situation but at this point it's out of my control and not worth fretting about. 3 years ago I had just been traveling around Europe for 3 months and had my backpack stolen with my camera, laptop, drone and worst of all my external hard drive. I think the sting of that one allowed me to compartmentalize this situation and remain in the present moment and have a positive mind state. Unable to publish anything this week I wanted to share a brief update so I walked outside from the Airbnb and recorded for 9 minutes- 1 take, just my raw thoughts on this Christmas day, 2020. Two main messages came to mind: 1. What gifts did you give yourself this year? Gratitude breeds happiness and reflecting on the positives from 2020 is key to being in the right state of mind as the year comes to an end. 2. What are you working on? Even if you are content with your place in life or your mindset, there is always something to learn, or some way to grow. After attending a men's retreat a few weeks ago I discovered a possible area of growth I had been ignoring- learning to be present even when I feel like I'm wasting time or I'm doing something I'm not all that thrilled about. Thank YOU for being a part of my community and providing the fuel I need to keep creating. I appreciate everyone who has been a part of my journey and especially the folks who reach out to engage with the content I put out. It means the world to me to hear from you. Video here: https://youtu.be/bRrtAamR8Yo Anyways, cheers to 2020 and Merry Christmas :)
You get to decide how you see the world. If you don't formulate your own perspective, someone else will do it for you. Matthew Callans, Roddy Hanson, Zak Kosher, myself and others are building The Symphony platform with the goal to connect you with the resources to go further; start a business, get in shape, stay up on progressive topics and live a balanced life without having to waste time and money navigating the process on your own. From the Canadian melting pot of cultures and flavours we know as Montreal, a young artist by the name of Spaceman Dela emerges. Growing up in a family of musicians, Dela has been surrounded by the impactful sounds of Jazz, Progressive Rock, and Classical music since a very young age. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, rap and hip-hop seemed to stand out and have a gravitational pull on him. Recognizing his unique abilities to write and compose lyrics, create melodies, and dive deep into sonic moods, Spaceman put the pen to the pad and started creating. Years of experience, performances and creative ventures later, the versatile emcee, singer, and songwriter is ready to shine and expose the true star that he is. Victoria Tin-bor Hui received her Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University and her B.SSc. in Journalism from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Victoria is an associate professor at the University of Notre Dame, and her core research examines the centrality of war in the formation and transformation of “China” in the long span of history. Hui also studies contentious politics. As a native from Hong Kong, she has written “Will China Crush the Protests in Hong Kong? Why Beijing Doesn't Need to Send in the Troops” in Foreign Affairs and “Hong Kong's Umbrella Movement: The Protest and Beyond” in the Journal of Democracy. She also maintains a blog on Hong Kong https://victoriatbhui.wordpress.com. She has extensively commented on Hong Kong politics in the media including the Washington Post's Monkey Cage, ChinaFile, ABC, the BBC, the New York Times, the Guardian, Bloomberg, Sky News, NPR, Vox, and the Christian Science Monitor. Victoria Hui's class on Contentious Chinese politics in the Fall of 2016 shifted my understanding of China and its place in the world. Following the end of the century of humiliation and the powerful Qing dynasty, we studied China's political and cultural history- Mao's cultural revolution, the invasion of Tibet and Mongolia, the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, Falun Gong, the widespread jailing of human rights lawyers, and the rise of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime. Because of China's growing influence and worldwide power it is vital to understand its history of human rights abuses and oppression of its people. During our conversation Victoria shares a brief history of China as well as her insights into the ongoing fight for freedom in Hong Kong. After more than 10,000 arrests and the passage of China's new extradition law (which broadly deems any form of dissent punishable with severe consequences) Victoria remains optimistic that daily, decentralized and diversified (the 3 D's) protest tactics provide hope for the future of Hong Kong.

Challenge leads to growth; the easy way leads to stagnation. Time and time again, Sumedhaa Kothari has chosen the unclear, uncertain journey over the well-trodden path. Complacency seems to be her biggest fear ;) On episode 38 we talk about the pillars of her mindset and how her mentors (primarily her bad-ass mama) paved the road for her to pursue her own calling in life.
