John welcomes Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Homeward Bound) to talk about her experience writing animated features, from the parallel processes of writing and production to her paltry paycheck for Beauty and the Beast. They consider the blurring lines between live-action and hyperrealistic CGI, as well as the history of animation writers' exclusion from the WGA. We also answer listener questions about whether there is such a thing as a bad character want and how to manage story days within a screenplay, which prompts exploration of wardrobe changes, thinking in terms of color rather than time and Linda's penchant for naked characters. "The Marvels," a 2023 American superhero film from Marvel Studios serves as the sequel to "Captain Marvel" (2019) and a continuation of the miniseries "Ms. Marvel" (2022). Directed by Nia DaCosta, who co-wrote the screenplay with Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik, the film features Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, portrayed by Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani, respectively. The plot revolves around these characters teaming up as they begin swapping places with each other every time they use their powers.A notable feature of the film is its mid-credits scene, where Monica Rambeau awakens in a parallel universe and is greeted by an alternate version of her mother, Maria, and the mutant scientist Hank McCoy. This scene sets the stage for future developments in the MCU and hints at the expansion of the universe with the inclusion of mutants.Discussion on this film involves in-depth conversation on the plot, character arcs, and post-credit scenes. The character dynamics, particularly the unique team-up and character-swapping mechanism, offer a fresh take on superhero team-ups. The film's connection to the broader MCU narrative, especially with its mid-credits scene, makes it a pivotal piece in the ongoing sagaThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5939723/advertisement

Hey everyone, Marvel Studios' final film of 2023 - The Marvels - has now released in theaters. This was, by no means, my most anticipated comic book movie of the year because I don't think the first Captain Marvel is great and the trailers seemed like Thor: Love and Thunder 2.0. The lack of confidence from Marvel and Disney to screen this film in advance also made me nervous going on. I don't remember the last time I was as unenthused with an MCU movie going in, not helped by numerous articles and scoops about the messiness of the future of it right now. But alas, I have seen the film. Was it good? Find out in this review. John and Craig host an in-depth look at the 1987 classic, The Princess Bride, recorded live at the WGA Theatre in 2019. They discuss how the “abridged” structure brings us only the best parts of the story and what this means for the characters and world. From the frame story to the myth of the Dread Pirate Roberts, The Princess Bride shaped decades of screenwriters but would be inconceivable to produce today. In our bonus segment for premium members, John and Craig discuss William Goldman's famous (and often misapplied) quote abut Hollywood: “Nobody knows anything.” Links: Episode 386 – The Princess Bride Episode 221 – Nobody Knows Anything (including what this quote means) The Princess Bride The Princess Bride: S. John and Craig look at how well-written dialogue is used to give characters a unique voice. Using clips from previous episodes they present a history of dialogue and its evolution, how it informs your actors, and how communicating an idea sometimes comes down to the smallest words our characters say. How can writers use dialogue to make their characters feel distinct and alive? What are tests for character voice? What can memorizing dialogue can teach us about writing it? And how do you keep all your characters active (and your actors happy) in group scenes? In our bonus segment for premium members, John and Craig stay on-topic to look at the pros and cons of dual dialogue.
