In 1965 an actress, dancer and singer accepted a small role in a new science fiction TV drama. Her expectations for the show were understandably low. But Lt. Uhura became the defining role her long career. The Regular Joes pay tribute to the life and legacy of Nichelle Nichols who broke barriers, changed minds, inspired countless people, and looked damned fine in a mini skirt. Having given most everyone else time to catch up, the Joes also review two recent teen centric dramas. First up Ms. Marvel from Disney Plus, which both introduces Kamala Khan and her world to the MCU and sets the stage for the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel. After that it's back to Hawkins Indiana for the wrap up of season four of Stranger Things. While most people are either nostalgic about, or totally wish to forget their high school years, few have had experiences quite like Dustin, Eleven, Jonathon, Lucas, Max, Mike, Nancy, Robin, Steve, Will, and Eddie. Who you're going to ask to the dance kind of seems trivial compared to demons, portals to the underworld, and the other seemingly unimaginable horrors they just keep running into. In spite of it all, could the most implausible thing be that most of these kids are still supposed to be in ninth grade? Thanks for listening!

Jules O’Loughlin ASC, ACS on shooting the FX series The Old Man and Disney+ series Ms. Marvel

The Cinematography Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2022 50:27

Australian cinematographer Jules O'Loughlin's path to movie making was a long journey. After graduating from the prestigious AFTRS- Australian Film Television and Radio School- he worked steadily and shot a wide range of films and TV shows including the action movie The Hitman's Bodyguard, the series Black Sails, the horror movie Krampus and the children's film Come Away. His recent work on two series, The Old Man and Ms. Marvel, show off his ability to visually transport audiences to other worlds. The FX action spy series The Old Man began shooting in the fall of 2019. Jeff Bridges plays Dan Chase, a retired CIA agent whose old enemies are still hunting him. The series is very well acted, with great dialog scenes between Bridges and John Lithgow. Jules believes that as a cinematographer, it's important to tread softly, be respectful and give the actors space to work without technical distractions. Jules shot two episodes of the series, with a planned location shoot in Morocco which was standing in for Afghanistan. But in March of 2020 the entire production shut down because of the pandemic. After a few months, production resumed and the desert around Santa Clarita, CA became the Afghanistan location. Unfortunately, shortly after that, Jeff Bridges, who actually did a lot of the fight scenes himself, was diagnosed with lymphoma. Bridges' stunt double stepped in and the VFX team used some digital face replacement for certain parts while he was undergoing treatment. Despite all the setbacks, The Old Man has been a hit and is coming back for a second season. The Disney+ series Ms. Marvel is about young Pakistani-American teen Kamala Khan, who discovers she has super powers after putting on a magic bracelet. The show is energetic, vibrant and colorful, reflecting Kamala's personality and South Asian culture. Jules and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy knew they could create a slightly different look for episodes four and five, since they take place in the Pakistan city of Karachi. Obaid-Chinoy is an Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker, and she and Jules chose to use more handheld cameras to explore the story's historic narrative as Kamala travels through time to learn more about her family's past. Ms. Marvel has brought an enthusiastic younger audience who are responding to Kamala's cultural identity. In Pakistan. Ms. Marvel is showing in movie theaters, since Disney+ is not available. Jules is currently working on Percy Jackson and the Olympians for Disney+, which involves some new challenges using LED screens on the soundstage. #3.8 - Ms. Marvel and the Muslim Superheroine - with Dr. Safiyya Hosein

Hard to Believe

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 1, 2022 62:27

Ms. Marvel was reborn in the pages of Marvel comics almost a decade ago, when writers Sama Amanat, a Pakistani-American Muslim, and G. Willow Wilson, who converted to Islam in 2003, created Khamala Khan, a 16-year-old Pakastani-American from New Jersey who idolizes the previous Ms. Marvel, Carol Danvers, Khan's portrayal has drawn plenty of accolades and criticisms for its portrayal of an American Muslim youth. And, in recent years, criticism of representation of Islam in western popular culture has become far more focused, especially in the two decades since 9/11. In general, however, mass media continues to reduce Muslims to a good Muslim/bad Muslim binary, lacking any real depth or nuance. With Kamala's Ms. Marvel now joining the MCU with the Disney+ television adaptation of her story having just wrapped, John decided to ask Dr. Safiyya Hosein, who has written extensively about Kamala Khan and whose academic work covers the intersection of Islam, comics, and gender, among other things, to join him to talk about it. Dr. Hosein is on Twitter @safibelle30

[School of Everything Else 2022] This is our second show on Kamala Khan. The first was all the way back in 2017 when we talked about her first comic miniseries. I've re-released that show on the podcast feed so these two can be companion pieces.  The Disney+ miniseries delivered almost exactly what we had been hoping for all these years. A bright, funny, courageous Pakistani-American girl hero. Instantly iconic and clearly in love with all things Marvel.  We did not expect the drama to be quite so naturalistic and poignant, the family to be so much more interesting than the interdimensional shenanigans or the gut punch of the 1947 Partition of India which stands as the centrepiece. This real life event created millions of immigrant refugee stories and generational hurt across a cultural divide which exists to this day.  Also the soundtrack is amazing! Alexis Hejna, Andrew Graham and Mark Radulich present their Ms Marvel 2022 Miniseries Review! Ms. Marvel is an American television miniseries created by Bisha K. Ali for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics featuring the character Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel. It is the seventh television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) produced by Marvel Studios, sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. It follows Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old fangirl of the Avengers who struggles to fit in until she gains her own powers. Ali serves as head writer with Adil & Bilall (Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah) leading the directing team. Iman Vellani stars as Kamala Khan, with Matt Lintz, Yasmeen Fletcher, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, Laurel Marsden, Azhar Usman, Rish Shah, Arian Moayed, Alysia Reiner, Laith Nakli, Nimra Bucha, Travina Springer, Adaku Ononogbo, Samina Ahmad, Fawad Khan, Mehwish Hayat, Farhan Akhtar, and Aramis Knight also starring. The series was announced with Ali's involvement in August 2019. Vellani was cast in September 2020, with El Arbi and Fallah, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy hired as the series' directors. Filming began in early November 2020, shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, and New Jersey, before concluding in Thailand in May 2021. Ms. Marvel premiered on June 8, 2022, and ran for six episodes, and concluded on July 13. It is part of Phase Four of the MCU. The series served as a set-up for the film The Marvels (2023), in which Vellani will reprise her role as Khan along with additional cast members from the series. The series received positive reviews, particularly for its creative visual style and Vellani's performance. Warning: Do not listen to this episode unless you have seen the Disney+ Marvel Studios 2022 series, “Ms. Marvel.” or do not mind hearing key plot points. Ms. Marvel is the 7th Marvel Studios series to premiere on Disney+ since the streaming service began. It introduces high school student Kamala Khan, who soon finds she has unique powers. She is of Pakistani descent and is the first Muslim superhero in the MCU. Swara Salih, a writer for IO9 and Nerds of Color, joins the show. His Iraqi background gives him a unique perspective on this character. Like the podcast did with Black Panther and Shang-Chi, the question is raised on how this character makes a Muslim person feel to see that representation in a superhero series. In addition to the cultural impact, this episode discusses the audience reaction and the show's place in the overarching Marvel Cinematic Universe. [School of Everything Else 2017] This is a reupload of our 2017 show discussing the first series of Ms. Marvel comics. It works as a great companion piece to our show on the 2022 MCU TV series.  In 2013 a brand new Marvel character was introduced to the world, one who is very reminiscent of classic Peter Parker, a goofy, hapless, sweet-natured teenager who just wants to help people. She's also the world's premier, headlining Muslim superhero, and very much due a movie or TV series to bring her to mass popularity like those who came before her. In tonight's episode we are joined by Alasdair Stuart, owner of Escape Artists and long-time comic-book expert, to enthusiastically discuss why the younger generations are already loving Kamala Khan, and why she's so important in the grand scheme. You don't have to have read any of her comics, but by the end of this you will want to.  Guest: Alasdair Stuart of Escape Pod

Created by Bisha K. Ali, Ms. Marvel follows Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old superhero fan who's just trying to get through high school when she discovers she has powers of her own. Ali discusses how she put together the writer's room for the MCU series: "I had a room that [reflected] the experience of the characters that we're talking about... We had to have authentic writers; we had to have writers who understood what intergenerational trauma is, what it is to be an immigrant, what it is to be a second-generation immigrant, what it is to be an outsider... in order to get this arc that I wanted to get." Ali goes on to share her advice for writers of color struggling to tell the stories they want to tell: "I think specifically [with] writers from marginalized backgrounds... there's this conflict of, 'I just want to do what I want to do, but I've never seen an example of that. I've never seen that made because people like me don't get to tell stories...' Stop worrying about that voice and really push yourself to be true to who you are." In this episode of the Bib's Corner Podcast, I bring on Saib Kazmi to talk about Disney+'s Ms. Marvel series. The show centers around a Pakistani-American girl, and huge Captain Marvel fan, who discovers that she has superpowers of her own. Iman Vellani, a real-life Kamala Khan fan, gets to bring the character to life and does so in an amazing way. The series' biggest strength is that it gives you a lot of characters to root for. Kamala herself is great but each of the people in her life has a lot of depth and has their own things going on which is not always how these Marvel series' operate. In the review, I mention that if Kamala had no abilities and I was just watching this teenage girl live her life I'd still enjoy the show. The fact that this is a Marvel property is a bonus. I brought on Saib to make sure that I was able to bring a Pakistani-American perspective to the review and Saib helped me answer all the questions I might have had about the portrayal and the show itself.
