Melanie Gibson is a martial artist and an author among her many titles. She has been to some dark places, as many of us have. She shares her journey from her “madness” in her book, “Kicking and Screaming: a Memoir of Madness and Martial Arts. She wants to use her experiences and the methods she employed to get to a better, healthier place to help others. We spoke about the slow deteriorating stigma that envelopes many aspects of mental health, the struggles many have with finding adequate help, and some less conventional ways to help course-correct to a better, happier person. In this episode Mat chats with Melanie Gibson, author of the book ‘Kicking And Screaming - a memoir of madness and martial arts' who lives in the USA and shares her life of hiding in plain sight with mental illness. Whilst the conversation initially followed the obvious path of linking Melanie's return to Taekwondo and the associated benefits of focus, physical and mental stimulation, community; the discussion shifted and dove down the rabbit hole of eating disorders, something Melanie labels a ‘mental illness' and has lived with since she turned 13 years old. As one reviewer commented, “Melanie's book is not a martial arts story. It's the terrifying tale of a beautiful soul at war with itself.” As you'll hear, Melanie gave Mat permission to discuss any subjects related to her journey, and such candidness requires courage. On The Unleashing Potential Podcast, we interview progressive individuals who are unleashing their potential on the world around them. We take a deep dive on how they got to where they are, what lessons they have learned along the way, and how their experiences can impact us all. Mental Health is a subject that touches the lives of almost everyone on the planet at some stage. The Impact Project is an active supporter of Lifeline Australia, the nation's suicide prevention service. In addition to helping to pay for calls to support those in their darkest moments, it is our hope that we can extend our reach through sharing these conversations. So throw in the ear-buds and listen to Melanie as she shares her experience of hiding in plain sight with mental illness. And if you like it, we'd love you to share it.

— Melanie Gibson came back to taekwondo when her mind and heart were finally tired of fighting. Oddly enough, kicking and screaming in taekwondo class finally quieted the kicking and screaming inside her soul and mind. It forced her to grow up. Melanie became more optimistic and laughed a lot more. She stepped up to challenges and no longer felt threatened or intimidated by the people around her. Now that she knew how to fight, she no longer went looking for a fight. She took charge of her life and refused to allow herself to continue playing the helpless (and blameless) victim. Melanie found a strength in herself that had been silent for too long. This very life-changing wondrous experience has also sidelined Melanie with a very painful (and very expensive) injury. She did not plan to spend hours on the floor while a loaned-out machine bends her recovering leg back and forth. The fact is, Melanie got back into taekwondo for her mental health, not her physical health. Melanie Gibson began taekwondo training at age ten. At age twelve she stopped taekwondo to pursue other interests, and resumed training in her early thirties. Although Melanie had academic and career achievements throughout her life, she struggled with mental illness and low self-esteem. After making some progress through psychiatric treatment and counseling, she knew she needed to do something more substantial to make lasting changes. Returning to taekwondo had always been in the back of her mind, and the timing was right. Taekwondo proved to be not only an opportunity to re-learn a beloved skill from her childhood, but also a means to build her self-esteem and confidence, and heal from old wounds. It brought a needed excitement and purpose to her life, which she shares in her blog Little Black Belt (http://littleblackbelt.com). While continuing to work at her full-time job, Melanie dedicated herself to taekwondo training and earned her first degree black belt in 2015. In 2017, she earned her second degree black belt. Although a pandemic and knee injury sidelined her training in 2020, Melanie plans to return to taekwondo and test for her third degree black belt. She has a bachelor's degree in English from Texas Woman's University, a Master of Library Science from the University of North Texas, and an MBA from the University of Texas at Arlington. Melanie has worked in the healthcare industry since 2004, with roles as a hospital librarian, corporate trainer, and learning designer. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grayson-mask/support

Today I'm talking to Melanie Gibson, from Texas, USA; athlete, writer, corporate employee, eating disorder survivor and creator of the blog Little Black Belt. Melanie's healing journey has been intrinsically linked with the sport of taekwondo. She began taekwondo training at age ten, then took a 22-year break, before returning to it in her early thirties. Melanie is a second degree black belt and is a third degree black belt candidate. Melanie began having body image issues around the age of 13, this leading to restrictive eating and later over-exercise and binge eating, through her teens and into her twenties. The eating issues calmed somewhat for many years, although body image struggles remained. Melanie loved sports and being active but this was also a way to manage body image concerns. Then in February 2021, at the age of 41, Melanie returned to therapy after experiencing multiple stressors in 2020 (not only a global pandemic but an anterior cruciate ligament tear, surgery, and grueling workplace demands). Her identity as an athlete, martial artist and all-fit person came crashing down. Melanie found herself returning to restricting food and obsessively weighing again and was diagnosed with atypical anorexia nervosa. Thankfully, today, Melanie is now doing much better and, on a journey, to overcoming her eating disorder. In this episode, she talks about her working on her mental health and eating disorder over the years, through taekwondo, therapy and other tools, moving towards a place of true recovery and healing. Melanie Gibson was an independent woman with a good job, multiple college degrees, and a condo in the trendy part of town. She also had a few mental illnesses, a minor substance abuse problem, and rotten relationship skills. She was a high-functioning crazy who needed a good kick in the pants, literally and metaphorically. In early 2013, as a last desperate means to save her sanity, Melanie turned to a nearly forgotten childhood activity: the Korean martial art of taekwondo. As if the universe were listening, she discovered her West Texas childhood taekwondo instructors' Grandmaster operated a taekwondo school a few miles from her home in Fort Worth, Texas--and she decided to start her training over as a white belt.In taekwondo, Melanie felt like she had a fresh start in more ways than one. She found an inner peace she'd never known before, a sense of community, a newfound confidence, and a positive outlook on life. The kicking and screaming she was doing in class quieted the long-term kicking and screaming in her mind. Funny and frank, Kicking and Screaming: A Memoir of Madness and Martial Arts is the story of Melanie's life-changing journey from troubled, lost soul to confident taekwondo black belt.
