Lucinda welcomes returning guest Dr. Jo Burrell, a clinical psychologist and co-founder of Ultimate Resilience. They delve into the alarming findings of the latest HR Wellbeing Report, which reveals that nearly half of HR professionals are experiencing clinical levels of depression, significantly higher than the general population. With over 1,400 respondents, the report highlights a stark disparity between the mental health struggles faced by HR professionals and the support they receive. Jo discusses the importance of open conversations about mental wellbeing in the HR field, the need for systemic support such as supervision, and practical tips for building resilience. KEY TAKEAWAYS The recent HR wellbeing report revealed that 44% of HR professionals meet the threshold for clinical levels of depression, which is 2.5 times higher than the general population. Additionally, 63% are likely experiencing significant symptoms of burnout. Despite the high levels of suffering, only 13% of HR professionals reported feeling very supported at work regarding their mental wellbeing. This indicates a significant gap between the mental health challenges faced and the support available. There is a "conspiracy of silence" surrounding HR wellbeing, where professionals feel they cannot express their struggles. Encouraging open discussions about mental health and creating a supportive environment is crucial for addressing these issues. Setting clear boundaries between work and personal life is essential for preventing burnout. HR professionals need to be assertive in protecting their time and wellbeing, which includes disconnecting from work after hours. BEST MOMENTS "What we found was 44% of respondents meeting the threshold for clinical levels of depression, which is two and a half times higher than we would expect to see in the general population." "There's a big disparity between the level of suffering and the degree of support that's available for people." "I think there's been a lack of acknowledgement that this has become a profession that is incredibly challenging." ill communication: copywriting tips & sales strategies for small businesses
This episode is different—and deeply personal. I'm stepping away from the usual copywriting tips to talk about something many of us avoid: mental health, burnout, and the hidden toll of holding it all together. The past year left me mentally and emotionally tapped out, and I didn't even fully realize it until I was on the other side. So in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm opening up about the behind-the-scenes struggles I've faced as a business owner—and the quiet moments of dissociation, disconnection, and doing the bare minimum just to keep going. To help make sense of it all, I'm joined by Rebecca Vogelius, a neuro-somatic intelligence practitioner and stress coach who helps high-performing women feel human again without sacrificing their success. Rebecca shares practical, physiological tools to help you come back to yourself when life (or business) gets heavy—and why rest and nervous system regulation aren't luxuries, they're survival skills.Topics Covered in This Episode:The hidden behaviors that might be signs of burnout or dissociationWhy “just think positive” might actually be making things worseA three-word tool to reconnect with yourself in under a minuteThis episode is a love letter to every entrepreneur who's ever kept smiling while quietly unraveling. Whether you're in the thick of it or feeling strong right now, this episode offers a new lens—and a few powerful shifts—to help you navigate the harder seasons with more clarity and capacity.Show notes are always available at https://www.kimkiel.com/podcast!!Resources Mentioned:Looking for a supportive business community to help you grow your business? Dr. Laura talks about spirituality and mental health in this episode, exploring the topics through the lens of the turbulent times we find ourselves in today. The uncertainty, volatility, and polarization in our modern times are creating a very real mental health crisis, especially in the areas of anxiety and depression. Dr. Laura defines these challenges and discusses how to address them through spirituality - a personal example of something that has worked for her.Spirituality is differentiated from religion in Dr. Laura's discussion, highlighting spirituality as an inner connection to something greater in the universe. She identifies spirituality as a growth journey, something beyond the material world, and connecting to greater love, hope, and a sense of purpose can offer relief from the anxiety and depression that plague us. Dr. Laura's message is one of finding ways through the trauma and rocky times we're in to a place of spiritual hope, however that may be defined for each of us. “Spirituality is about your connection to the divine, your connection to the universe. Having a sense of purpose. Living with unconditional love rather than fear.” Dr. LauraAbout Dr. Laura:Dr. Laura Hambley Lovett is a work and career psychologist and thought leader on the evolution of work. We are joined again by Professor John Swinton, ahead of his summer class “Theology, Mental Health and the Problem of Suffering” (May 12-16). We discuss his recent research on systemic factors that contribute to mental health challenges, methods in practical theology and the issue of casual theodicy in Christian communities. We discuss the mystery of God's hiddenness, sitting with the unresolved in church communities, and the importance of boundaries in friendship and caring for people with mental health challenges and disabilities. John also briefly mentions his album Beautiful Songs About Difficult Things, where he integrates his many years of theological reflection into artistic meditations for the church. We're hoping he'll sing a few songs for us in May!Bio Professor John Swinton is a Scottish theologian, ordained minister in the Church of Scotland, and a former mental health nurse. He holds the Chair in Divinity and Religious Studies at the University of Aberdeen, where he specializes in practical theology and pastoral care. Building Connections was launched by Clarecare in conjunction with the Department of Psychology in Mary Immaculate College, Tusla and The HSE. It examined the experience of parenting while living with a mental health challenge. The report and findings of the research were launched recently. Let's prepare for a meaningful conversation! I am Yovy Daniels, a former television corporate professional in the U.S. Spanish-speaking broadcast industry. I am building my media consulting firm, Alkiria Media Branding Consulting (AMBC). I am passionate about female empowerment, higher education advocacy, and emotional intelligence. Additionally, I am the co-creator and host of @todolatinoshow with @todowafi on @youtube. As a producer and host of two podcasts, I am a native Spanish speaker who collaborates and co-hosts the TodoWafi media show, Todolatino. In a heartwarming and insightful episode, Reading With Your Kids host Jed Doherty explores the incredible ways books can heal, support, and strengthen family bonds. The conversation dives deep into two groundbreaking resources that are changing how families approach reading and mental health. First up is Michelle Sherman's powerful book "I Am Not Alone," a game-changing guide for teens navigating the challenges of having a parent struggling with mental health. Sherman reveals a shocking statistic: about 20% of young people live with a parent experiencing mental health issues. Her book fills a critical gap, offering support, understanding, and practical strategies for teens who often feel invisible and alone. The episode then shifts to the Mother Daughter Book Club Guide, created by sisters Stefanie Hohl and Meghan Voss. This innovative resource transforms reading from a solitary activity into a dynamic, fun family experience. With 12 carefully curated books and interactive discussion guides, the book helps parents and children connect on a deeper level, making reading an adventure rather than a chore. Meghan Voss, an education expert, highlights the incredible benefits of reading together. Beyond just literacy, shared reading builds critical thinking skills, creates lasting memories, and helps children develop emotional intelligence. The guide offers flexible options for families, from intimate home book clubs to neighborhood reading groups. The conversation also touches on the ABC See Here Do reading program, which uses creative movement to teach reading skills, addressing the sobering fact that 70% of kids struggle with reading by fourth grade. Whether you're a parent looking to strengthen family bonds, a teacher seeking innovative literacy tools, or someone interested in mental health support for teens, this episode offers practical, heartwarming insights. It's a powerful reminder that books are more than just words on a page – they're bridges that connect us, heal us, and help us understand each other. Becoming a parent is often described as one of the most life-changing experiences, filled with love, excitement, and a whole new level of responsibility. But alongside the joy, many new mums experience emotional highs and lows, sometimes more intense than expected. It's completely natural to feel a mix of emotions, but for some, those low moments don't just come and go; they linger and deepen. Postnatal depression (PND) can develop anytime within the first year after birth, often appearing in those early months. In this episode of The Happier Life Project, released just in time for Mother's Day in the UK, we welcome back My Possible Self contributor Chlo Hodgkinson — a personal trainer, women's diet, fitness, and hormones coach, and founder of Chlo & Co Media, a social media company dedicated to the fitness and wellness space. Chlo shares her remarkable journey from pregnancy to parenthood, reflecting on everything from coming to terms with the big news and preparing for a smooth labour, to navigating the emotional challenges of caring for a newborn. She also discusses her experience with postnatal depression, which emerged at the five-month mark and, according to the NHS, affects over 1 in 10 women, sharing how she gradually reclaimed her well-being. Chlo candidly addresses the pervasive mum guilt she continually struggled with, the societal pressure to ‘bounce back' after giving birth, and how she protected herself from the overwhelming social media content directed at new mums. With host Gabby, Chlo also talks about how she found balance between her thriving career and the demands of motherhood, offering listeners an inspiring message of resilience and self-compassion. Through her honest account, we aim to provide understanding, support, and solidarity for mums everywhere. Whether you're a new parent navigating similar challenges or supporting someone through their postpartum journey, tune in for heartfelt insights, practical advice, and the reassurance that it's okay to ask for help.
