Increasing the number of women coaches in the game requires proactive efforts and a change in attitudes. Improving technical skills and commitment to training are essential for players aspiring to play at a high level. Having standout players can make a significant difference in a team's performance. Introduction: Host Michael Rand slows it down a bit at the start of the show to talk about two subjects: Immaculate Grid, a new baseball trivia game of sorts that lets Rand use his vast reservoir of seemingly useless 1980s and 1990s baseball knowledge; and the evolution of Twitter, prompted by a listener question. 12:00: Star Tribune Twins beat writer Bobby Nightengale Jr. joins Rand to give a midyear report of sorts on the team. With just three games left before the All-Star break, the Twins are in good shape in the AL Central. The offense will tell the story of whether they can be even better. Plus Nightengale looks ahead to the MLB Draft, with the Twins having the No. 5 pick on Sunday. 31:00: It was closer than they might have liked, but Minnesota Aurora advanced in the USL W playoffs.
Introduction: Host Michael Rand takes aim at the dumbest rule in sports -- the clause in NBA contracts that allows players to earn tens of millions of dollars more just for being named to an All-NBA team. It made a huge difference in Karl-Anthony Towns' contract extension, and whether Anthony Edwards makes an All-NBA team this season will be the difference in about $43 million on his deal over the next five seasons. Plus Rand responds to a listener query about Twins injuries and notes the recent cooling off from Luis Arraez. 11:00: Star Tribune sports intern Noah Furtado joins Rand to talk about three teams he's been covering lately: Minnesota Aurora, United and Lynx. All three are trending in the right direction, with Aurora set for a big playoff game Thursday and the other two finding their footing. 29:00: Speaking of the Lynx, Cheryl Reeve made it known that the team definitely isn't "tanking" for better draft position in 2024. Eight wins in their last 11 games offer ample evidence.
Jason talked with the undefeated Aurora's goalkeeping coach Cassie Ulrich about their season and their focus heading into the playoffs
June has been abnormally dry and nearly half the state is under some kind of drought. We'll look at how this drought stacks up and whether relief might be on the way. Public records show Minnesota's food companies are especially vulnerable to cyberattacks. And hackers have seriously threatened operations at big food companies over the past few years — which means Land O'Lakes or Hormel could become targets. The reporter digging into the documents tells MPR News host Cathy Wurzer what that means. Swedish settlers have a long history in Minnesota. A tiny Wisconsin border town got a big win at the legislature this year that will help them tell that story. And sports guys Wally and Eric talk Timberwolves, Minnesota Aurora and that head shaking Twins trade.
On this episode of 10,000 Pitches, Jeremy Rushing and Dominic Jose Bisogno discuss Minnesota United's blowout loss to CF Montreal, the international break, a mid-season retrospective, and what needs to happen moving forward. The Lynx are still looking for the first win of their season. The Minnesota Aurora pre-professional women's soccer team has had a dazzling start to theirs. The Twins? They're doing okay. Wally Langfellow and Eric Nelson joined MPR News Host Cathy Wurzer with their take on what's happening on the Minnesota sports scene.
Introduction: Host Michael Rand recognizes that we can all be critical of trades that don't work out, so he decided to start Thursday's show by acknowledging a big deal that did work: the 2021 Twins trade for Joe Ryan, who is now 7-1 after Wednesday's win over the Giants. 7:00: Vikings writer Andrew Krammer joins Rand for an examination of the team's defense and just how much is being put on the plate of new coordinator Brian Flores. His resume suggests he's up to the task. 27:00: Another successful debut for Minnesota Aurora.
Minnesota Aurora, a pre-professional women's soccer team based in Eagan, is gearing up for their second season after their stunning opening season. Nearly two-thirds of the inaugural team will be back this year, along with some new players on the roster. We wanted to talk with one of those new players who has a very busy start to the season. The founders of a Chisago City brewery won an award for people who started their businesses after age 50.
