I went back into my archives and found a newsletter from 1998. I had featured the Chateau Potelle 1995 Zinfandel and I remember the wine well. On a recent trip to Napa, after 28 years, I decided it would be nice to check in with Jean-Noel. I am not sure why I waited so long! In this episode of Wine Talks, I sit with Jean-Noel and dive into the world of wine with a sprinkle of humor and a good dash of philosophy. Jean-Noel, a seasoned veteran, opposes the American habit of rating wines, comparing it to rating one's most cherished moments. He emphasizes that wine should celebrate emotions and culture rather than serve as an ego booster. With a vineyard history as rich as a well-oaked Chardonnay, Jean-Noel's approach is all about making memories—not just products. Passionate about wine and life, he quips that wine, like art, is made to share and enjoy, even if it ends up as fond memories and...well, you get the drift! Cheers to wines that speak of places and times, and people who embrace life's finer pleasures—just like a warm puppy on a cool evening.
Legendary winemaker Chris Carpenter (Cardinale, Lokoya, Hickinbotham, La Jota, and Mt. Brave) joins us today to tell us why Mt. Brave Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect pairing for beef tenderloin! We also talk all things Mount Veeder and discuss the differences in mountain versus valley floor grapes. Why the Pairing Works: Mt. Brave has a brightness and acidity that pair beautifully with the fatty richness of tenderloin The blue fruits, violets, and acid in Mt. Brave make the perfect contrast to the savory, fatty, and weighty texture of tenderloin The tannins of this wine are curved and don't need as much cellar time or decanting What Makes this Cabernet Special: Chris's specialty is mountain fruit from the Napa Valley, which tends to have more minerality than valley fruit. Mt. Brave is made from Mount Veeder fruit and can live in a cellar for years but is also ready to drink now Compared to some of his other projects, Chris makes Mt. Brave to be a mountain wine with softer tannins, meaning a Somm or consumer could serve it immediately, tableside without cellaring Mt. Brave and parent company Jackson Family have invested in creating sustainability in Napa, Sonoma, and all of California. The Napa properties are organic and regenerative. Agriculture produces 30% of the carbon load to the world, so Chris & Jackson Family believe that viticulture must be the leader in carbon reductions Chris's Last Supper: 16 inch pepperoni pizza from Renaldi's and a 9 liter Guinness Song Pairing: Sympathy for the Devil Learn more here: https://www.mtbravewines.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mtbravewines/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/what2drink/message

Christi & Alex get into a bargain with the devil & taste wine from Napa Valley's Youngest AVA. (BTW- An "AVA" is an American Vinticultural Area- which is a geographically defined chunk of land used for growing grapes that has been defined as such because of it's special attributes. The soil, the sun, the elevation, the shape of the land- all of what makes the grapes grown there special.) All of which part of what makes this wine it's own, unique thing! So pop in the earbuds, pull open a bottle, and let's Drink Something AMAZING!Winemaker NotesAromas of fresh herbs, pungent cedar, and forest swirl in the glass with more delicate floral notes, black pepper, bittersweet chocolate, and crushed rock On the palate, a little brambly-vine quality clings to blackberry flavors, and warmly spiced dark plum is layered with fresh herbs for a lively, sweet-savory balance. Fine tannins yield satisfyingly rich, velvety textures, while vibrant acidity keeps you coming back for another sip.Faust Winery ( @FaustWines )At Faust, we seek to express the complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon and the diversity of the Napa Valley by sourcing from our estate vineyards in Coombsville and Rutherford as well as from small lots on Atlas Peak, Mount Veeder and Howell Mountain. Founder Robert (Bob) Craig began his career in wine at The Hess Collection on Mount Veeder in the 1980s. Prior to starting the winery, Bob's passion for Mountain Cabernet had him spearheading the official recognition of both the Mount Veeder and Spring Mountain District AVAs. In 1995 22 acres were purchased at the summit of Howell Mountain – the vineyard property that would become their estate winery. Elton arrived in 2004 and spearheaded the overhaul and reinvestment of the farming, winemaking and sales structure at. Now the managing partner at the winery, he spends much of his time traveling around the country spreading the Craig word. Elton's has brought his passion for old world wines to the new world of Craig with a production philosophy based on site expression. (Previously aired July 2021) This is not an episode about Napa's “icon wines” or “icon wineries” whose labels, rarity, and high cost cause a frenzy among consumers resulting in exclusive waitlists for the privilege of purchasing a bottle. No, today we're talking about the “star” vineyards that, in some cases, have become brands in their own right. In Part One, we spoke with Andy Beckstoffer, the winegrower who turned Napa Valley's grower-winery relationship upside down. Today our illustrious guests include Paul Hobbs, Chris Tynan of Cliff Lede Vineyards, and Tom Hinde of Taub Family Selections to discuss what makes their vineyards so unique. Paul Hobbs is an esteemed international winemaking consultant with projects across the globe from Argentina to Armenia but his home base is at Napa Valley's Paul Hobbs winery whose fruit is sourced from the sub AVA's of St. Helena and Oakville. He works with Beckstoffer's fruit from the notable To Kalon, Las Piedras, and Dr. Crane vineyards. He'll open up about his long-time relationship with Beckstoffer Vineyards plus the Nathan Coombs Estate on the foot of the Vaca Mountain range known for its volcanic soils and cool climate. Taub Family Selections represents top sites in St. Helena, Rutherford, Oakville, Yountville, Mount Veeder, and Howell Mountain. Through a relationship with Andy Beckstoffer, the Taub family has access to the vineyards of Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III (Rutherford) and Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper (Oakville) producing Cabernet Sauvignons since 2012. Winemaker Tom Hinde was previously known for his work at Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, Hartford Family Winery, La Crema Winery, Lakoya, Cardinale, Stonestreet, and Verite. We'll tap into his experience at creating brands and a strong market perspective to give us insight into why these vineyards command such respect. We'll also be speaking with Christopher Tynan, winemaker of Cliff Lede Vineyards whose experience includes working with Helen Turley at Blankiet Estate in Yountville, as the assistant winemaker at Colgin Cellars where he worked closely with Vineyard Manager David Abreu. We discuss the famed Poetry Vineyard that is carved into a steep west-facing hillside, which reaches from the highest elevations of the Stags Leap District sub-appellation to the valley floor drawing its uniqueness from shallow, volcanic soils atop fractured shale planted by David Abreu with high vine density and proprietary clonal selection. Top up your glass with one of Napa's finest and join us as we hunt down some of Napa's most unique terroirs.

In anticipation of our upcoming premiere of Verticals season 2, Jason Wise talks about the fires that affected Mount Veeder with grape geneticist Carole Meredith, who experienced them firsthand.
In this conversation, Justine Tesseron, of Chateâu Pontet-Canet in Pauillac, Bordeaux, is telling the story of the family’s arrival from Cognac back in 1961. The purchase of Pontet-Canet and raising it to one of the most desired Pauillac wines in the last 20 years with glowing reviews. We talked about the decision to go organic and the move to full biodynamic viticulture; the experimentation with amphora and what it meant for the wines. Lastly, Justine introduced details of their latest project, the Californian Bordeaux blend produced from vines planted by the late comedy genius Robin Williams in his Villa Sorriso, on Mount Veeder. The wine, called Pym-Rae is a honouring the vineyard’s name, chosen by Williams, after his children middle names.
On this week's episode of SIP we talked with Ashley and John Derr of Lampyridae Vineyards in Napa Valley. Lampyridae is one of the highest vineyards on Mount Veeder, we shared photos and location info via Google Earth. Lampyridae has been growing premium wine grapes for the past two decades, sourcing fruit for Beringer, Handwritten, Kind Cellars and more. The wine-growing duo shared their story, talked about their partnership with acclaimed winemaker Aaron Pott, and we tasted their award-winning 2018 Grenache.
Hosts Sandy and Michelle are joined by Karen Crouse of Mount Veeder Magic Vineyard and LA based artist Matias Marroquin to discuss their Connection and Perspective Project, a limited 300 bottle offering of Mount Veeder Magic Vineyard's superb 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon with label artwork created by Matias. Art, wine and passion meet in this episode as the inspiration for this special project is shared as well as details on how Wines To Find, Karen and Matias are working together to share this project with a special virtual tasting offering. Tune in today to hear the discussion of art, wine label art, and how important it is to keep grounded in today's uncertain world.***************************************Link to Mount Veeder Magic Vineyard website:http://www.mountveedermagic.com****************************************Link to Matias Marroquin website:https://www.matiasmarroquin.org****************************************We have been listed in the Top 30 wine podcasts! https://blog.feedspot.com/wine_podcasts/********************************************https://pickagreatwine.com/?page_id=284Use this link to get $10 off your first purchase at Wine Spies. www.winespies.com/invites/JoSCw95j******************************************************Music from https://filmmusic.io "Night In Venice" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com) License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) .Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/winestofind)
In Episode 81 of the Mr. Wine Guy Podcast I had the privilege of republishing my interview with David Tate, Winemaker for Barnett Vineyards and Vintner for Tate Wine out of Napa Valley, CA. This Episode was originally Episode 7 which aired July of 2018. David's been making wine for quite some time now, but his journey really began years ago when he flew to Australia with nothing but change in his pocket and took a position in the wine industry in the Barossa Valley. Since then, David's had the privilege of making wine in countries such as New Zealand and France, and currently makes wine in the Spring Mountain District of Napa Valley. David talks about the privilege he has to be the winemaker for Barnett Vineyards since 2007, and how honored he is to be a part of the legacy that Hal and Fiona Barnett have created. David talks about how he's known for making Merlot, considering he produces so much Cabernet Sauvigno,n and how he's bringing Merlot back so to speak, which I couldn't agree more! David also talks about his love for mountain fruit, in particular Mount Veeder, and in particular his personal brand, Tate Wine. One of the things I really enjoy about this episode is how David demonstrates such a willingness to do whatever it takes to make it in the wine industry. His resilience to be successful in all areas of his life including the wine industry really says a lot about him and the character David displays in all facets of his life. I know for a fact that the value you are going to get from this episode is going to be huge so get ready because you are in for a treat! This episode’s guest is Chris Carpenter, who is making wines in Napa for Jackson Family Wines and is overseeing Cabernet and Bordelais varietals grown on several of Napa’s mountain AVA’s such that he has become known as a mountain winemaker. Our conversation covers the mountain wines being produced from Mount Veeder, Spring Mountain, Howell Mountain, and Diamond Mountain AVA’s, but also Cardinale, the flagship Cabernet that is a blend from throughout Napa including the valley floor. Ann Reynolds, who runs Wine Compliance Alliance has been on the podcast twice before. In Ep. 45 we discuss common compliance issues that wineries deal with and in Ep. 61 she has a solo episode where she covers the compliance items for starting a new winery. Winery compliance. Bring it up to winery owners or their staff and you get either a completely blank look or a grimace of some sort. In other words winery compliance is a topic that is either very unfamiliar or very disliked. But yet, every winery is required to do it and can suffer serious consequences if they don't. Wine Compliance Alliance focuses on providing wineries with solutions to both of these areas of issue. If a winery has little familiarity with their compliance requirements our office can provide training assistance to get them up to speed to be able to manage it themselves. If a winery would prefer instead to have their files managed for them we’ve got you covered there too. Wine Compliance Alliance, Full throttle from grape to bottle. We stay hyper-local in this episode and talk with a few acclaimed guests from the Oakville area. My co-host Jean-Charles and I talk about the unique and highly sought-after grape-growing region then we taste a single Oakville wine in this episode: the 2015 Raymond Vineyards Oakville District Collection Cabernet Sauvignon. The lush and rich, dark red wine is soul-satisfying and pairs great with grilled filet mignon. This episode is made possible by Oakville Grocery, part of Boisset Collection, a portfolio of wineries and lifestyle destinations with strong historical and family roots. We move into a conversation with Rudd Estate Vintner Samantha Rudd, daughter of the late Leslie Rudd. By the age of eight, Rudd knew confidently that she would devote her life to wine, after her family bought the iconic estate in Oakville and relocated from Wichita by way of Aspen. Their empire included not only the winery and Press restaurant, but also the Oakville Grocery, which she sold to Jean-Charles and Boisset Collection. Rudd adores being a landowner and tending to the estate sustainably for future generations to enjoy. Rudd crafts a lovely fresh white wine with fruit from Mount Veeder, and her red wines are all made with grapes grown on her organic and biodynamic estate. In total, she produces 4,000 cases, with the Rudd Estate Bordeaux blend the most representative of the Rudd Estate’s iron-rich soil and rocks. Hear more about several of their other labels: Samantha’s Cabernet (launched in 2008) and a second label, Crossroads, re-launched in 2019. Next, we sit down with Joyce Stavert, Executive Director of the Oakville Winegrowers. Stavert shares with us the distinctions in soil, location and orientation that make the coveted Oakville AVA so unique. Her rich expertise comes in part from work at two acclaimed Oakville Vineyards: Robert Mondavi and Far Niente. Stayed tuned to hear more on the special wine project launched by the winegrowers association in 2005: a collaborative, limited production called the Oakville Cuvée, a blend of wine from a group of local Oakville winemakers who each contribute five gallons for the blend. Thanks for listening, and stay tuned for more shows in the coming weeks. Please share across your social media channels and subscribe to get each new episode directly to your podcast feed. In Episode 39 of the Mr. Wine Guy Podcast I had the privilege of sitting down with Karen Crouse, Owner and Vintner of Mount Veeder Magic Vineyards out of the Mount Veeder AVA of Napa Valley. In this episode Karen talks about a unique service she provides where she helps clients create their own custom wine. Within this service clients purchase the wine, bottles, labels, capsules, and corks through Karen's personable, consultative services. This gives her clients an opportunity to create a wine that represents them and everything they stand for, and also gives them an opportunity to live vicariously through the eyes of a Vintner. Karen talks about Jeff Fontanella and what it means to have him on board as winemaker and Jeff's ability to craft incredible mountain driven wines such as hers. Karen also talks about what it's like to be a board member for the Mount Veeder AVA council and what it means to help spread the word and support local vintners within her community. With everyhing being said, the one thing you're going to LOVE more than anything in this podcast is Karen's personality and charisma throughout the entire interview. Karen is such an incredible human being and it won't take you long to love and appreciate her just as much as everyone else does. The wildfires that ripped through California this year destroyed tens of thousands of acres, hundreds of homes and dozens of wineries, including the Segassia Vineyard that sat atop Mount Veeder in Napa, but owner Andrew Cates has a plan to help the vineyard – along with its neighbors – rise up from the ashes while also helping the survivors of other disasters.
Texan Taylor Sheridan, the Oscar nominated writer of "Hell Or High Water" and "Sicario," is back with another crime based thriller this time set in Wyoming called "Wind River."The Cogill's find the film both powerful and melancholy while praising the performance of Jeremy Renner. Sommelier Hayley Hamilton Cogill, pairs the film by matching the pioneering spirit of those who settled the rugged terrain of Mount Veeder in Napa Valley, while paying homage to the Wappo Tribe with Mt. Brave Wines. The Cogill's also recall their recent "Wine & Film" trip to New Mexico with a toast to locally made films "Easy Rider" and "Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid," with New Mexico wines from Gruet, La Chiripada and Casa Rondena.
