River Toussaint Rabbitte is the frontwoman of wht.rbbt.obj, a favorite artist of this podcast, and she’s getting ready to release a solo single called “Put Down For Love” - “a slow-burning Pop/R&B ballad that drips with passion, submission, and the intoxicating pull of obsession.” In short, it’s a whole vibe and a stunning piece of music. River joined me for a chat in front of Tuscan Market & Wine Shop (141 W Wing St, Arlington Heights, IL 60005), and Tuscan owner Tracy jumped in the back seat with a Tuscan Heat pizza (Basil Pesto Sauce, Smoked Gouda, Mozzarella, Italian Sausage and Hot Giardiniera) to share. The Tuscan Heat is a remarkably well-balanced slice of pizza. If you’re in the northwest burbs and looking for a perfect, friendly, chill place to enjoy a glass of wine or cold beer, Tuscan Market is your new place. In addition to talking about “Put Down for Love,” River and I talked about her provocative lyrics, a Car Con Carne “Easter egg” that I caught in a recent wht.rbbt.obj performance, the forthcoming wht.rbbt.obj vinyl release, her approach to vocals, and what’s next for wht.rbbt.obj. ## Car Con Carne sponsored by Easy Automation: easy-automation.net Transform your living space with cutting-edge home automation. We've known each other for a decade, and it's been amazing to watch her evolve from a graphic designer and wine consultant to the owner of The Messy Cookie. Krystina shares how she started out in the corporate world, working for ad agencies, and then pivoted to running her own design business after being laid off. She talks about her foray into direct sales with WineShop at Home, which helped her build confidence in public speaking and sales, and how eventually, she found her true passion in cookie decorating. What started as a hobby in 2018 quickly grew into The Messy Cookie, a full-blown business where she creates custom cookies and hosts cookie decorating parties. We dive into how the pandemic forced her to pivot again, this time to virtual team-building events with clients like Wayfair and other big companies. She also shares how she's continued to evolve her business, from branded cookie designs to opening her own space in Portland, Maine, where she hosts pop-up events. This episode is full of inspiration, insight, and a lot of laughs as Krystina reflects on her messy, magical entrepreneurial journey—from corporate life to crafting sweet treats. Of all the sectors of wine, retail has to be the toughest. Tough meaning you need to understand not only wine, but POS systems, merchandising, event planning, inventory systems, the gift of gab, employee relations, internet marketing, subscription marketing, and many more facets.  And Jeff and Kathy did not set out to be a multi-store wine shop "chain" nor did the set out to get married. But, as the romance of wine would have it, both of these events occurred.  Wine Talks caught up with the couple at their Manhattan Beach store to not only engage in a revealing conversation, but to also interact with the single file line of patrons making their way in for a tasting, a bottle or a little of both. Jeffs knowledge of wine and how to inspire customers is rather unique and Kathy's disarming conversational style will want you to stick around awhile and see what might happen...because something to write home about will emerge.   Cheers.

Steffini is a wife and mother of two who back 2012 saw a need for a shop that sold carefully chosen, high quality wines within Atlanta. In addition to her WSET wine certification, she also holds a degree in Biology from the University of Houston which has served as a backbone to her studies in viticulture. Her most important role at Purple Corkscrew is that of Chief Curator of wines serving as the purveyor of small, boutique, award-winning wines. Her expertise has attracted winemakers from all corners of the globe to visit the shop, and Steffini is also well-traveled for wine both domestically and internationally. Alongside other wine aficionados, she has explored regions such as Rhone Valley, various regions in Spain, Walla Walla Valley in Washington, and small vineyards in Oregon. She has also volunteered at harvest in efforts to expand her knowledge of the winemaking process. She believes it is key to know where the grapes come from and how they are pressed and fermented to make the magic that she sells in every bottle. Before moving to Paris in 2018, when visiting my parents in Florida I'd drive two hours west to Naples, FL for all my wine purchases. There was really (almost) nowhere in the state to purchase low intervention wines. Fast forward to 2020 I noticed online that a new wine shop in the area opened and since then I've stopped by every time I've come back for vacation. Small Wine Shop is a neighborhood shop owned and run by husband and wife duo Tim and Tracy. I spoke to Tim about how his decades (plural!!) of experience in the wine industry led him to open his own place with a very clear vision of the kinds of wines he'd offer, how his business is directly affected by the distributors in Florida and what the natural wine community is like in Fort Lauderdale. But we also know that most of the Islamic world, including Iran, has a long history that is drenched in drinking and culturally entwined with the consumption, celebration, romance, and medicinal practise of wine, beer, and alcohol drinking. So how do we make sense of this? Historian Dr. Rudi Matthee, author of the newly published book, "Angels, Tapping at the Wine Shop's Door: A Comprehensive History of Alcohol in the Islamic World," joins Jian to walk through the paradoxical past and present of alcohol and the Islamic world - including Iran under the Ayatollahs. A veteran of New York City's fine dining world, the pandemic forced Erin Keene to take a step back and reset her life. That reset landed the Pennsylvania native in Richmond, Virginia, where she opened Second Bottle Wine Shop in Richmond's Church Hill neighborhood. "I was in a place where I was ready for a big jump. Life as I knew it had really just shut off [in New York City]. In that time, I started formulating the plans for this wine shop," Keene said. "While I was on the journey to find where the best place or where the best fit would be for it, I had a camping trip planned down here to visit a good friend of mine. We're sitting around the campfire and she's like, 'What about Richmond?' It was like huge fireworks. I had never thought about it as a place that I wanted to live. But all of a sudden, I was like, it makes so much sense in so many ways." Keene made the move to Richmond in 2020 and opened Second Bottle on N. 27th Street in Church Hill in 2021. "I was very struck by Church Hill," Keene said about her decision to locate in that particular Richmond neighborhood. "The green space was a big part of that. I have a dog, so that was appealing, all these parks that are very close by, within walking distance. And then the food scene really. What I had experienced of it was exciting The fear of leaving New York is always that you'll be bored or there won't be enough things to excite you and I didn't feel like that would be the case here. And that is exactly what I've experienced." For people who don't live in the neighborhood and are unsure whether it's worth a drive to Church Hill to buy wine, Keene offered this pitch. "One of the biggest things we offer, or what we aim to offer, is our service and hospitality while you're here," she said. "If it's the end of a long day, and you don't want to talk to anyone you don't have to, but myself and Garrett, who works with me, strive to get to know you and get to know your palate and what you like to drink and what you like to cook and what you've had before that you liked or maybe didn't like, so that you get that customized service or help when you come in. It's what love about it, actually."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
