Christi & Alex get into a bargain with the devil & taste wine from Napa Valley's Youngest AVA. (BTW- An "AVA" is an American Vinticultural Area- which is a geographically defined chunk of land used for growing grapes that has been defined as such because of it's special attributes. The soil, the sun, the elevation, the shape of the land- all of what makes the grapes grown there special.) All of which part of what makes this wine it's own, unique thing! So pop in the earbuds, pull open a bottle, and let's Drink Something AMAZING!Winemaker NotesAromas of fresh herbs, pungent cedar, and forest swirl in the glass with more delicate floral notes, black pepper, bittersweet chocolate, and crushed rock On the palate, a little brambly-vine quality clings to blackberry flavors, and warmly spiced dark plum is layered with fresh herbs for a lively, sweet-savory balance. Fine tannins yield satisfyingly rich, velvety textures, while vibrant acidity keeps you coming back for another sip.Faust Winery ( @FaustWines )At Faust, we seek to express the complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon and the diversity of the Napa Valley by sourcing from our estate vineyards in Coombsville and Rutherford as well as from small lots on Atlas Peak, Mount Veeder and Howell Mountain. Founder Robert (Bob) Craig began his career in wine at The Hess Collection on Mount Veeder in the 1980s. Prior to starting the winery, Bob's passion for Mountain Cabernet had him spearheading the official recognition of both the Mount Veeder and Spring Mountain District AVAs. In 1995 22 acres were purchased at the summit of Howell Mountain – the vineyard property that would become their estate winery. Elton arrived in 2004 and spearheaded the overhaul and reinvestment of the farming, winemaking and sales structure at. Now the managing partner at the winery, he spends much of his time traveling around the country spreading the Craig word. Elton's has brought his passion for old world wines to the new world of Craig with a production philosophy based on site expression. We had a great visit with Elton and his infectious passion for wine will come through the speakers and make you want to try these mountain grown wines [EP262] robertcraigwine.com instagram.com/robertcraigwinery instagram.com/eltonslone2
The Cogill's are fans of writer/director Jordan Peele (Get Out) and found his latest film, Nope,” to be both a Cowboy/Sci Fi spectacle as well as a thought-provoking piece of social commentary.“House Of The Dragon” is the HBO prequel to the award-winning series, “Game Of Thrones,” dating back 200 years. Good acting, plenty of Dragons, and a fascinating female lead have kept the Cogills more than interested.Sommelier, Hayley Hamilton Cogill, pairs the cowboy-minded “Nope” with a wine labeled “The Walking Fool” from Suisun Valley. A red blend based on an 1881 Howell Mountain homesteader who walked down the mountain daily to find work. For “House Of The Dragon,” Hayley settles on a wine called “Dragon's Tooth,” from the Trefethen family honoring family matriarch, Catherine Trefethen.

(Previously aired July 2021) This is not an episode about Napa's “icon wines” or “icon wineries” whose labels, rarity, and high cost cause a frenzy among consumers resulting in exclusive waitlists for the privilege of purchasing a bottle. No, today we're talking about the “star” vineyards that, in some cases, have become brands in their own right. In Part One, we spoke with Andy Beckstoffer, the winegrower who turned Napa Valley's grower-winery relationship upside down. Today our illustrious guests include Paul Hobbs, Chris Tynan of Cliff Lede Vineyards, and Tom Hinde of Taub Family Selections to discuss what makes their vineyards so unique. Paul Hobbs is an esteemed international winemaking consultant with projects across the globe from Argentina to Armenia but his home base is at Napa Valley's Paul Hobbs winery whose fruit is sourced from the sub AVA's of St. Helena and Oakville. He works with Beckstoffer's fruit from the notable To Kalon, Las Piedras, and Dr. Crane vineyards. He'll open up about his long-time relationship with Beckstoffer Vineyards plus the Nathan Coombs Estate on the foot of the Vaca Mountain range known for its volcanic soils and cool climate. Taub Family Selections represents top sites in St. Helena, Rutherford, Oakville, Yountville, Mount Veeder, and Howell Mountain. Through a relationship with Andy Beckstoffer, the Taub family has access to the vineyards of Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III (Rutherford) and Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper (Oakville) producing Cabernet Sauvignons since 2012. Winemaker Tom Hinde was previously known for his work at Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, Hartford Family Winery, La Crema Winery, Lakoya, Cardinale, Stonestreet, and Verite. We'll tap into his experience at creating brands and a strong market perspective to give us insight into why these vineyards command such respect. We'll also be speaking with Christopher Tynan, winemaker of Cliff Lede Vineyards whose experience includes working with Helen Turley at Blankiet Estate in Yountville, as the assistant winemaker at Colgin Cellars where he worked closely with Vineyard Manager David Abreu. We discuss the famed Poetry Vineyard that is carved into a steep west-facing hillside, which reaches from the highest elevations of the Stags Leap District sub-appellation to the valley floor drawing its uniqueness from shallow, volcanic soils atop fractured shale planted by David Abreu with high vine density and proprietary clonal selection. Top up your glass with one of Napa's finest and join us as we hunt down some of Napa's most unique terroirs.
This episode of the Podcast features Danielle Cyrot, who is the winemaker for Cade Winery and 13th Vineyard on Howell Mountain in the Napa Valley. Founding winemaker Delia Viader, PhD. applies a unique approach to grape growing and wine making, challenging new world conventions while honoring old world traditions; resulting in a highly sought after and coveted cult wine – their flagship Viader Proprietary Red Blend. Delia forged the vision for this hillside estate vineyard and exceptional wine blend in 1986.Today Viader Vineyards is a thriving multi-generational family business as son Alan continues to produce world-class wines from their magnificent, mature estate vineyard on Howell Mountain. For an elevated yet welcoming level of hospitality.Born in Argentina, proprietor Delia Viader spent much of her formative years in Europe and especially in France. Delia came to the United States as a post-graduate student and holds a doctorate in Philosophy from the Sorbonne University in Paris, France and pursued advanced business Studies at three American universities: MIT, UC Berkeley and UC Davis. After MIT, she moved to California and continued business school at the University of California Berkeley. During her studies, she realized the opportunities in the United States for both starting a career and raising children in a healthy environment.Recognizing the potential of the up and coming wine region nearby, Delia soon set her sights on purchasing land in the Napa Valley and subsequently plunged into the wine business in the early 1980s. With an initial loan from her father, Engr. Walter Viader, she acquired their Howell Mountain property and set out to create a world class wine estate. Delia continued learning about winemaking through programs in Enology and Viticulture offered at University of California, Davis to better learn the practical theory behind making fine wine. All while raising four children on her own, Delia forged the vision and design for this unique estate vineyard property, wine blend and brand. Delia's story illustrates the importance of education and understanding coupled with following one's instincts. The Viader®estate and Delia's wines have consistently reflected these strengths. As a leader within the local wine community, Delia contributes her perspective and industry experience to the Napa Valley Vintners and California Wine Institute where she currently serves on the Board for both organizations. Her history with the Napa Valley Vintners dates as far back as 1990 where she and a select group of local vintner leaders helped frame the organization's strategic plan. Since then, Delia has helped spearhead Premiere Napa Valley – an annual grand tasting and futures trade auction that consistently raises more than $4 million each year, and has also contributed to Auction Napa Valley in various roles, spending a decade as part of the beneficiary vetting committee and helping to set the focus and parameters that would determine adjudication of funds.Alan spent his childhood on his family's vineyard estate on Howell Mountain. His early education in wine and formal schooling helped shape his respect for terroir-driven wines, organic farming, and diverse viticultural practices from around the world. He started working in the family vineyards at the age of nine and continued to help throughout his childhood, including working as cellarhand in the caves at Viader After high school, he pursued his passion for grape growing with a hands-on program in Sonoma where he received a degree in Viticulture Management. In 2002, Alan officially stepped in as Vineyard Manager for Viader in 2002, while simultaneously continuing his education at UC Davis, where he learned the fundamentals in winemaking. In 2005, Alan worked a harvest at Achavel-Ferrer winery in Mendoza, Argentina, which convinced him that winemaking was his calling. Alan officially stepped in as lead winemaker for Viader® in 2006. Today, he continues to oversee vineyard management operations while working in all areas of wine production together with his mother, Delia at Viader An avid adventurer and seasoned traveler, Alan continues to visit the world's best wine producers and wine growing regions throughout Argentina, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany and France. In 2013, he went to the University of Sciences Agro to study viticulture in Bordeaux, France.A hands-on experimentalist and eternal student of the vine, Alan has been at the forefront of trialing and adopting the right combination of organic, biodynamic and sustainable practices, not to mention new technology integrations that optimally benefit the quality of Viader wines. In the cellar, Alan has been equally fervent about delivering better quality results, experimenting with different blends, yeasts, fermentations, barreling, etc., always open to new ideas, trials and opportunities to responsibly deliver improved quality wines. As the right-hand to his mother & founder, Delia Viader, Alan oversees Viader production from start to finish. Having inherited his mother's passion for winemaking and expressing Viader 's unique terroir, Alan is looking forward to continuing the family business for many exciting vintages and generations to come.

In 1992, when we started Clif Bar & Company, we were driven by our passion for food and adventure and a desire to create convenient, portable and above all delicious food for today's busy lifestyles. Several years later, in 1997, we moved with our family to the Napa Valley. What started as a home in the country soon developed into a wonderful adventure in winemaking and a deeper commitment to sustainability and farming. Today, on CCOF-certified organic farm we grow a variety of fruits and vegetables that make their way to our Clif Family Bruschetteria Food Truck and into and our preserved fruit and vegetable products. For our wines, we source our fruit from some of the best vineyards in the Napa Valley and Mendocino appellations, working with growers that have demonstrated a commitment to the environment and sustainable farming of their land. Our Cabernet Sauvignon wines come from our organically farmed Howell Mountain estate vineyards. In spring 2018, we purchased a 40-acre vineyard in Napa Valley's famed Oak Knoll District. We are looking forward to our first harvest from this organically farmed vineyard in 2021.Our goal is to craft unique, regional wine and foods using practices that care for the earth and to support growers who use sustainable and organic farming methods. In this way, we can contribute to a more vibrant and healthy food community.
Resilience. Determination. Perseverance. These three words describe our guest, Alan Viader of Viader Vineyards & Winery. Resilience to continue in the face of wildfire devastation. Determination to grow grapes on the steepest, rockiest slopes of Napa Valley's Howell Mountain, and perseverance to survive not one but two major fire events. Join the Marys as we get right into a story so relevant for today's wineries. With fire season here, and the continuation of drought in California, we are so inspired by Alan, who is making the wines at the pioneering winery his mother Delia Viader started in 1986. Alan is a volunteer for Napa search and rescue operations, and recently became a trained firefighter. This dynamic mother-son team keeps pushing the limits to create some of the most sought after wines in Napa Valley. You'll be inspired by their story.

We already know that the 2018 vintage is a winner in Napa Valley and on April 8 James tasted a handful of wines from Dana Estates, one of the cult wine producers of the region, while interviewing winemaker Chris Cooney over Zoom. James found the wines to be some of the best he has rated so far from 2018. And the two single-vineyard wines, Helms Vineyard and Lotus Vineyard, showed incredible depth and intensity with fantastically strong yet polished, fine tannins that gave the wine form and beauty. They didn't produce a wine from Hershey Vineyard in 2018 due to some concerns of smoke from fires north of Napa that had settled in their highest vineyards in Howell Mountain.“It was a vintage with this combination of almost perfect heat and still being a cooler vintage and the wines expressed that,” said Cooney. “They are wines that have a little more energy and those secondary notes that you don't see for cabernet sauvignons. They had left layers to the wines … my favorite part about the wines are that they have such bright acidity … they are a touch more approachable than 2016 and 2017.”See the wines notes below.Dana Estates Napa Valley Lotus Vineyard 2018Dana Estates Napa Valley Rutherford Helms Vineyard 2018Dana Estates Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Onda 2018Dana Estates Napa Valley Howell Mountain Hershey Vineyard White 2018The video interview is available at https://www.jamessuckling.com/videos/video-james-suckling-tastes-dana-estates-2018-wines/

My guests are sister and brother, Heather Griffin and Brian Brakesman, who own and run Summit Lake Vineyards with their father. Summit Lake Vineyards is one of the earliest wineries in Howell Mountain, Napa Valley and is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. When I first met Heather up on the mountain I was so happy to hear that their 70+ year old father, Bob Brakesman, still actively manages the vineyards, while Brian makes the wine and Heather takes care of the sales and marketing. To celebrate International Women's Day and Women's History Month I interviewed two talented female winemakers; Danielle Cyrot of CADE Estate Winery, and Colleen FitzGerald of Pine Ridge Vineyards.
On this podcast I talk with two talented female winemakers as we celebrated International Women's Day, recorded March 6th. My first guest will be Danielle Cyrot who has held enviable positions in her career, the last 12 years of which have been at CADE Estate Winery on Howell Mountain. Danielle is working with two interesting projects, the details of which we'll cover. Colleen FitzGerald is the enologist and a winemaker at Pine Ridge VIneyards in the Stags Leap District. She's been handed an intereresting wine wine project which led to a sparkling brand that is their first added label in 25 years. Has it been a challenge for these women to work in such a male dominated field? You may be surprised by their answers. Thanks for coming along for the ride.
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! There is a quote by Linda Wooten states that motherhood is learning about strengths you didn’t know you had.. and dealing with fears you didn’t know existed. Well, that statement is definitely true when it come to Delia of Viader Vineyards! She calls herself the ‘Wine Mother.’ As she claims I'm the mother of the vines; and the mother of the wines; and the mother of the wine maker.” That is a lot of mothering! I had the pleasure of sitting down with Delia to discuss what it is like to be woman in the wine world. What it was like to see a piece of property on Howell Mountain and, without any true wine background, know that she could make a name for herself as a vineyard owner and a winemaker. We talked about why making wines from “Above the Clouds” equates to a very specific profile that no matter the winemaker, the wine always speaks to being Howell Mountain. And we discuss what it was like to be in the middle of the horrific fires and see flames all around you. On this week's episode of SIP Virtual wine Tastings with Winemakers we talked with certified soil scientist Bryan Rahn, Viticulturist Dylan Rahn and Winemaker Hannah Rahn. Rahn Estate was established in 1998. After working for a consulting company evaluating soils and designing vineyards, traveling to Napa finally caught up with Bryan Rahn and he took a leap of faith and acquired the 20-acre property. Certified soil scientist, Bryan was attracted by the gravely volcanic soils and high elevation of the site and designed the hillside estate vineyards on the Howell Mountain by hand-selecting Cabernet Sauvignon root stocks and clones to fit the micro-climates. The terroir of Howell Mountain allows for nuanced and concentrated fruit flavors and balanced tannin. Bryan's son Dylan, now a viticulturist, and daughter Hannah, a winemaker, started exploring the vineyards and learning from their father at a very young age. Years later, the family continues to grow exceptional fruit and produce ultra premium Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Currently producing only a couple hundred of cases of each vintage, the family aspires to make up to 1200 cases as they grow and develop. We talked about soils, clones and food and wine pairings for the Rahn Estate 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Lucky number 13... Episode, we have the great fortune to sit down and talk some wine with renowned winemaker, Mike Trujillo, who has been in Napa for a very long time making some awesome wines. He takes us on his winemaking journey with some funny stories.Michael Trujillo has long been associated with several of Napa Valley’s notable wineries –Karl Lawrence Cellars, KaDieM Cellars, Herb Lamb Vineyards, and Madrigal. As the former director of winemaking at Sequoia Grove, and consultant at Materra/Cunat Family Vineyards where he helped design of both state of the art winemaking facilities, Trujillo tends to skirt the spotlight, letting his wines speak for themselves. But with the emergence of his own label, Trujillo Wines, the Napa resident is finding it harder to duck the accolades.A Colorado native, Trujillo first visited the Napa Valley during a college road trip in 1982, and never left. Formerly a student of architectural engineering, he became a student of winemaking. His teacher? The great André Tchelistcheff, who served as a consulting winemaker at Sequoia Grove where Trujillo first landed. “Andre had a way of allowing you see the wine in a living sense,” said Trujillo. “He was amazing. He refused to become carried away with trends and never chased a certain style. He instilled in me the style of wine that I make today.”Long an astute purchaser of premium grapes (he was an early adapter of Beckstoffer To Kalon and Dr. Crane Vineyard fruit during his time as Owner Partner and Winemaker for Karl Lawrence where he made what became known as ‘the cult wine without the cult price’) Trujillo and his eponymous label focus on Cabernet Sauvignon blends made with grapes from the diverse terroirs of his favorite vineyards: Rutherford’s Gary Morisoli Vineyards, St. Helena’s Healy Vineyards, Herb Lamb Vineyards, and Henry Brothers Ranch on Howell Mountain.“This wine is an accumulation and blend of the grapes I love,” said Trujillo.“I strive to give my wines a true varietal expression with perfect balance while expressing attributes that reflect vintage and sense of place.” His first Trujillo vintage was 2011 with 450 cases; growth has been steady since. Whenever he has what he believes to be an exceptional vintage he also creates a vineyard designate reserve – one, two, and three barrel lots that reflect the purest expression of vineyard and AVA pedigree.Trujillo also makes a second companion label utilizing what he calls the ‘cuttings’ left over from his Trujillo blend. Named Madelyn after his daughter, the reasonably priced and approachable wine includes a bit more of Malbec and Merlot. “Madelyn wines are actually my way of keeping Trujillo Cabernet pure and consistent,” said Trujillo. “It provides me an avenue so that I don’t have to force everything into one blend.”“This creation of high-end gems, middle, and lower tiered wines is fun,” says Trujillo. “I have a good time with my wines, and after 35 years in the business, it’s all coming together for me with Trujillo Wines – experience, relationships, consistency of quality. Wine is magical. I believe in wine and all it brings to life.”
On this week's episode of SIP Virtual Wine Tastings we talked with Winemaker Laura Barrett of Clif Family Winery in Napa Valley. In this episode, Damien and Jonathan welcome their good friend and sommelier Thomas Klafke to Spill the Truth about the Howell Mountain AVA. This is the the most informative episode to date and might have the best wine ever consumed by the guys while recording. Thomas flew in just to share three estate Cabernet Sauvignons from three different vintages while discussing the nuances of the region in a fun way. The conversation really is an in depth look into the Howell Mountain AVA and the mind of a sommelier, yet it also covers everything from how we got in the business to what we would drink if we were trapped on a desert island. We really hope you enjoy this look into the mind of a somm and thank you again Thomas for sharing some of the best wines ever made in California. Ann Reynolds, who runs Wine Compliance Alliance has been on the podcast twice before. In Ep. 45 we discuss common compliance issues that wineries deal with and in Ep. 61 she has a solo episode where she covers the compliance items for starting a new winery. Winery compliance. Bring it up to winery owners or their staff and you get either a completely blank look or a grimace of some sort. In other words winery compliance is a topic that is either very unfamiliar or very disliked. But yet, every winery is required to do it and can suffer serious consequences if they don't. Wine Compliance Alliance focuses on providing wineries with solutions to both of these areas of issue. If a winery has little familiarity with their compliance requirements our office can provide training assistance to get them up to speed to be able to manage it themselves. If a winery would prefer instead to have their files managed for them we’ve got you covered there too. Wine Compliance Alliance, Full throttle from grape to bottle. While it doesn't have a huge marketing presence the name Dunn is sure to get the attention of Napa Valley Cabernet lovers. Randy Dunn made his first eponymous Howell Mountain cabernet sauvignon in 1979. Dunn cabernets today aren't all that different from earlier vintages. They eschew the trendy giant style that garners high scores from critics. This doesn't mean Dunn wines are thin by any means. The fruit from Howell mountain makes a wine that is tannic for sure, but once you get beyond that (or let the tannins settle with a bit of aging) the fruit is extraordinarily elegant and complex. Today, Mike Dunn makes the wine at Dunn and fosters his father's vision for this Napa icon. At the same time Mike has started his own label, Retro. This brand lets Mike explore styles beyond the house style of Dunn with his delicious petite sirah.
Delia Viader was born in Argentina and came to the U.S. as a student. She holds a doctorate in Philosophy from the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. She pursued advanced business degrees at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California, Berkeley in the U.S. Delia’s father helped her financially for the initial seven-year investment in her winery. As she fell in love with California when she was a student at Berkeley and was attracted to the wine industry. After founding VIADER in 1986, Delia studied Enology and Viticulture at the University of California, Davis to learn the practical theory behind making fine wine Her first vintage was 1989, when she produced 1,200 cases of wine. Today, Delia has a production total of 7,500 cases under the Viader labels. Delia found that she was decidedly more attracted to Old World wines. She was particularly impressed by the wines of Chateau Cheval Blanc in St. Emilion, from which she based the idea for her first blend, the 1989 VIADER comprising 40 percent Cabernet Franc and 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, a combination that is now her signature wine. Always “daring to be different,” Delia decided to bring the Bordeaux style of winemaking and vineyard cultivation to the California hillside by planting the vines in rows going up and down the mountain, following the path of the afternoon sun down the steep slopes of Howell Mountain. At the time, she met strong opposition and criticism for planting her vines in this way, simply because it had never been done before. However, soon after successfully releasing her first vintage, it was clear that her efforts to develop the vineyard were worthwhile. With optimal sun exposure, and unique soil that allows for natural drainage, the vines struggle to survive in the rocky terroir and produce fruit of exceptional quality. In 2002, her son Alan came on board, first to manage the vineyards and later to be the Director of Operations, joining Delia on the winemaking and production team. Her daughter Janet is Director of Marketing and Sales. Delia’s family (she has four children) and fascination with fine wines have been her primary motivations for starting her beautiful winery overlooking the Napa Valley.
This episode features John Caldwell, the maverick, the grape-grower, the vine-smuggler, the clonal researcher, the winemaker, and the story-teller. John didn't plan to start his own winery, and neither did he plan to plant grapevines on his property in Coombsville when he first bought it. Three years after my first podcast with Mike Dunn, he helped me rope Randy Dunn into a podcast so that we could learn more about old-school Napa winemaking and the stories from a place that had far less glitz than exists today. Not one to seek the spotlight, Randy has consistently turned out iconic mountain Cabernets, which have brought the spotlight up to their otherwise quiet ranch on Howell Mountain since the 70's. Mike and Randy count their harvests together in decades, not years. There are two reasons this turned out to be a great podcast. First, Randy painted a picture of his background and some of the adventures from his early days at Caymus Vineyards, including misleading immigration raids. Second, Mike and Randy were candid about their methods of working together together at Dunn Vineyards. For a primer to this episode, check out Mike's first podcast on Inside Winemaking in Ep. 3 from August of 2014, where we discuss his path back to Dunn Vineyards and the creation of his own wines with the Retro Cellars brand. Alan Viader, second generation winemaker and Director of Operations for Viader Vineyards & Winery in Napa. Learn more about Alan at CruPodcast.com In this episode, Alan shares with us the story behind his family’s estate on Howell Mountain, how his mother used dynamite to move rock in order to plant the vineyard all while raising three kids, and how working with winemakers in Argentina, Alan realized that he wanted to become a winemaker. We then get into the viticultural and winemaking practices used at Viader. From trellising to blending, Alan gives us some insight into the science and art into how Viader wines are made. But before we get into the episode, I want to tell you about our sponsor. The Grand Tour is a fresh new take on a wine club. It was created by master somm, Dustin Wilson and the team at Verve Wine. They believe that part of the fun of wine is learning about and exploring the many regions from around the world. They also know that it can be difficult to navigate through the vast number of wineries out there. Who makes the best wines from a particular place? How do I get my hands on them? These are the reasons that they started The Grand Tour. Every month they will highlight a new wine region of the world. They spend that month tasting through hundreds of wines to find what they think best represents the region. They want to take you on a journey through and showcase the different types of wines that help tell the story of that place, while featuring producers that they feel are some of the best; the insiders, the ones who really know what's up. A subscription to The Grand Tour will get you four different bottles of truly special, sommelier-approved wine for $95 each month (plus shipping), along with expert insight into the stories behind the wines, from the people and places who produce them to how they’re made, tasting notes, pairings and more. So you can go on with your life, leave the research to the geeks, and look forward to enjoying unique, remarkable, trustworthy wines in the comfort of your home. After an extensive string of internships spanning New Zealand, Napa, and Australia, Laura Barrett made a list of her top ten women winemakers that she hoped to work with and landed herself a job with a superstar, Mia Klein. After working with Mia at Fisher Vineyards, Laura was the winemaker at Casey Flat Ranch before taking on her current winemaking post at Clif Family Winery. Based in Napa, Clif Family gained notoriety for their line of snack bars popular with endurance athletics before branching out into the wine business. Under Laura's stewardship, Clif Family is producing a stellar line-up of wines, including Bordeaux varieties from their organically-farmed estate on Howell Mountain. Laura showed up prepared for this episode of the podcast, notes and all. Don't miss her trials with Grenache-based rose, and the unpopular belief she employs in the winery.
Mike Dunn returned to his family's winery in 2000 and in this Podcast tells the story of his journey outside of winemaking and how it ultimately lead back to Dunn Vineyards up on Howell Mountain in Napa. Mike describes what Dunn looked like back when he was a teenager working for Randy. He then goes over how some basic equipment upgrades in the early 2000's have streamlined the winemaking, saving time and everyone's back health, yet kept the winemaking simple and respected the tradition of Dunn Vineyards - massive in fruit and tannins. Having access to some gnarly old vine Petite Sirah, and the motivation to create something purely his own, Mike launched Retro Cellars in 2003. During our conversation Mike gives a cheat-sheet for working with Petite Sirah both in the vineyard and the cellar. He then ties Dunn and Retro in together and explains how time and patience are key to both of these very different wines.
Had a great conversation with Mike Dunn of Dunn Vineyards today. I drove up to the winery on Howell Mountain. It was a great drive and a great conversation. We talk about many things, including the winery, alcohol level, wine critics and of course Howell Mountain. Mike was one of the most passionate and down to earth people you will meet in the wine business. I really enjoyed our talk and I know you will too.
In this episode, I interview Danielle Cyrot, the winemaker for . CADE, founded by the folks at PlumpJack back in 2005, is one of the few wineries up on Napa's Howell Mountain. It's worth the trip up windy Howell Mountain Road to experiece CADE-- for an amazing view from high up on Howell Mountain out across Napa Valley, and of course, for the wines. talks about how she fell into wine, her early winemaking experience in France and Australia, and how she manages to make amazing wines that are ready to drink now, even though Howell Mountain wine has a reputation of needing to be cellared.
