To set the scene, we are in Provence. The Mediterranean is lapping at the shore a mere stone's throw away... In these parts, growing vines is the legacy of ancient times. Alas, a short while before Marcel Ott's discovery, phylloxera had wreaked havoc on the vines. The land was cheaper, but the vineyards would have to be replanted. The wine had lost a great deal of its soul in the vineyard's reconstruction. Marcel Ott bought several estates and began renovating them with the determined ambition to create great Provencal wines from noble grape varieties. Today, 120 years later, cousins Christian and Jean-François Ott dedicate their life to their ancestor's love for the site. In 2004, Domaines Ott joined Louis Roederer and its fabulous selection of wine craftsmen.Christian and Jean-François run three estates: Château de Selle, Clos Mireille (both Côtes de Provence) and Château Romassan (Bandol). This idea continues to drive everything we do - farming responsibly, harvesting by hand, using 100% native fermentation, and making wine with minimal intervention. Our unwavering commitment to crafting distinctive wines that capture the spirit of the Sonoma Coast has been the bedrock of our success, and it will continue to drive us forward for years to come. Perched on top of soaring coastal ridges that border the nearby Pacific Ocean, our estate vineyards, Camp Meeting Ridge and Sea View Ridge, rise to impressive elevations from 1,150 to 1,875 feet. Flowers resides in the Fort Ross-Seaview American Viticulture Area (AVA), which was established in 2012 and located on the extreme western edge of the Sonoma Coast Appellation. Defined by elevation, rugged terrain and proximity to the Pacific Ocean, vineyard plantings are limited to 920-1,800+ft above sea level and are only 2% of the total AVA acreage. The Pacific Ocean is less than two miles from the vineyards, generating cooling sea breezes and coastal fog while the soaring elevations ensure abundant sunshine for a long, slow growing season. He planted vineyards and constructed a winery of redwood and native limestone in time to produce the first vintage of Monte Bello in 1892. The historic building now serves as the Ridge production facility.Though Ridge began as a Cabernet winery, by the mid-60s, it had produced several Zinfandels including the Geyserville. In 1972, Lytton Springs joined the line-up and the two came to represent an important part of Ridge production. Known primarily for its red wines, Ridge has also made limited amounts of Chardonnay since 1962.The Ridge approach is straightforward: find the most intense and flavorful grapes, guide the natural process, draw all the fruit's richness into the wine. Decisions on when to pick, when to press, when to rack, what varietals and what parcels to include and when to bottle, are based on taste. To retain the nuances that increase complexity, Ridge winemakers handle the grapes and wine as gently as possible. There are no recipes, only attention and sensitivity.Support the showLike the Show? Harlan's most luxurious and robust Pinot Noirs, with deep, penetrating flavors of ripe plum, black cherry and cassis. As it unfurls, the wine reveals beautiful underlying complexity, with fine-grained tannins and hints of white pepper, sassafras and cigar box lingering on the finish.Calera WineryIn 1975, legendary vintner and American wine pioneer Josh Jensen founded Calera (Spanish for “lime kiln”) high in the remote Gavilan Mountains of California's windswept Central Coast. There, in Mt. Harlan's low-yielding, limestone-rich soils and cool, arid climate, he began planting what would ultimately become six small estate vineyards. Today, these vineyards are recognized as some of the New World's most revered Pinot Noir sites.Calera is a vision, and Calera's wines truly express the sense of place. Rather than follow the recommended path, Josh Jensen became a pioneer in American Pinot Noir. Taking his cue from the great domaines of Burgundy, which have grown grapes in limestone soil for centuries, he set out in search of the perfect spot in California to create wines unique to the world but in the style of the greatest wines of France. Site selection was vital as he ventured off the grid to plant on the site of an old limekiln in the Gavilan Mountains of California's Central Coast. Under the stewardship of Winemaker Mike Waller, each vineyard is renowned for producing singular wines of uncommon purity, elegance and aging potential. In addition to its beloved single-vineyard wines, Calera partners with some of the top vineyards on California's majestic Central Coast to make Calera's beautiful Central Coast wines, including a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.#wine, #winepodcast, #wineeducation, #Redwine, #Calera, #calerawine, #calerawinery, #joshjensen, #somm, #spokanesomm, #ilovewine, #ilikewine, #Support the showLike the Show? The range is crafted by Leonildo himself, whose wine-making genius, constant research and innovative methods have carved a unique niche for these exceptional, extract-full and long-living whites that go far, far beyond their own appellation.Pieropan Soave Classico 2020Soave DOC, Italy85% Garganega, 15% Trebianno di Soave12% abv$18.99 average priceBuy This Wine! #wine, #whitewine, #Somm, #sommelier, #wineeducation, #winetasting, #winepodcast, #spokanesomm, #drinksomethingamazing, #italy, #italianwine, #italianwines, #soave, #soaveclassico, #soavedoc, #pieropan, #pieropansoave, #italianwinetasting, #ilovewine, #Garganega, #trebbianodisoaveSupport the showLike the Show? Christi & Alex get into a bargain with the devil & taste wine from Napa Valley's Youngest AVA. (BTW- An "AVA" is an American Vinticultural Area- which is a geographically defined chunk of land used for growing grapes that has been defined as such because of it's special attributes. The soil, the sun, the elevation, the shape of the land- all of what makes the grapes grown there special.) All of which part of what makes this wine it's own, unique thing! We promised & promised- and now we deliver! We finally did it- A blind tasting where neither of us know what the wine is! Christi & Alex sit down with Kit 115A from Master The World, a company based in San Mateo, California, that sells wine tasting kits. This kit has 6 wines in it, 3 white and 3 red -all packaged with labels over the labels, so the tasting is completely "blind" unless you choose otherwise! As part of the service, Master The World has several On-Line Tasting Grids that you can work through, and in the end have the wine revealed to you. All wines have been "road-tested" by three Master Sommeliers, and their notes are laid out next to your selections - so you can compare your experience to theirs, flavor by flavor! What happens when fresh grapes are picked, but not processed? If you are in Rome, the answer might be that these grapes are being laid to rest in wooden crates in their own little home, with gentle, cool breezes sweeping off the hills to slowly, carefully and patiently reduce the water level in them. Once these grapes have lost 30% of their water, they are then pressed & fermented, where their higher concentration of sugar & solids create a more intensely flavored wine- a wine that expresses the passion & fire of the town where Romeo wooed, wed, courted & died with his love Juliet! The mist shrouded hills of northern Italy have given birth to some of the world's most incredible food wines & this wine is part of that proud tradition. What makes this wine exceptional is also how well it drinks by itself! These grapes are grown in a place where the Alps reach down into the Mediterranean, unfolding from snowcapped, razor sharp peaks into rolling hillsides covered in vineyards & fields, reaching through narrow valleys to touch the blue waters of the Ligurian Sea. Piedmont, literally translated as "foot of the mountain", is a land of rolling hilltops & shaded valleys set against the crisp backdrop of the Alps. Vineyards cling to the hillsides today, as they have for thousands of years, and each autumn they are bathed in the fog from which these grapes, and this wine, gets it's name, the "nebbia". Christi & I sat down to record this on the evening when I first read this article. This is my/our response to the New York Times article published on 10.29.2020 revealing the abusive of privilege and authority by multiple Master Sommeliers in the Court of Master Sommeliers, Americas. It is not edited for clarity, but rather a raw response to the impact I felt immediately after reading the article by Ms. Julia Moskin. (read the article here)I have proudly associated myself with the Court ever since I achieved my pin in 2015. I do not regret my education, but I am ashamed to associate myself with an organization that has done so much damage to women, people of color, and those who have given them their trust & money.
