GUYS - Is it True that You Always Have to Be Right in a Conflict

Many men feel the need to always be right in relationships, which can often lead to communication breakdowns and conflict. Once in a relationship, it's no longer about “you vs. me,” but rather about “us,” requiring mutual respect and honoring each other's feelings. Matthew Hoffman emphasizes avoiding known “landmines” in relationships—like repeatedly doing things that upset your partner—and deciding if a conflict is worth escalating. Jeremy Roadruck encourages men to stop settling for “good enough” relationships and to view communication as a toolset, like fitness routines or income streams, with multiple ways to approach and resolve issues. Asking for clarification and creating a “feedback loop” are vital tools for building strong, healthy relationships. Tina Huggins notes that women, particularly those with past marriages, may also feel the need to be right to prevent repeating past mistakes, adding another layer of complexity to modern relationships.   Watch the video here to learn more from Matthew P. OK Boomers we all know that we have been stumped by a certain new technology or that dreaded UPDATE to our Mac, any laptop, iPad.. Arba Cooper's motto is EMPOWERING BABY BOOMERS to BOOST BUSINESS. Let me introduce Digital Technologist Arba Cooper When Arba and I first met, Arba mentioned that she and her husband have a five year plan to buy a large property for "year round training and lodging."  As the former La Chatelaine of Le Petit Chateau inn, I was silently screaming DON'T DO IT… However.. they have their ideas firmly grounded in the training aspect.  That is a vital and key aspect of anyone with ambitions to start this beast (LODGING) of a project.  We eventually transitioned to current topics.. our different businesses.  I learned that Arba has a wealth of training information, talent, and practical experience as a trainer and website designer: seven years as a SCORE volunteer and engineer with Hewlett Packard.   https://arbacooper.com/home Here is a great link to learn more about Arba Cooper.  Foremost, today Arba Cooper focuses her Digital Technology practice on the Baby Boomers who are SOLOPRENEURS.  She focuses on their ability to learn what they need in technology for their businesses to succeed for their day to day functions. She teaches them how to use the technology that they can operate, use and manage on their own. She is not selling them a Ferrari.  More akin to a subaru and in the drivers seat, not the passenger seat. For instance, the technology hype is to create funnels or a huge email marketing program because that is what all the hype is about.” Oh you gotta have a funnel sales system”. Oh you gotta have an email marketing program”.  Both of these hypes are expensive and I know first hand as I was using KAJABI for $149 a month.   I was completely overwhelmed and not using any of these “ MUST HAVE” business applications. What I find so refreshing about Arba is her ability to help SOLOPRENEURS gain the technology that they can learn and manage without all the expensive and largely unused applications because “everyone else says “ ya gotta have this”. Her wide range of skills include web design, technology training, speaking, and acting. Arba has helped numerous entrepreneurs successfully launch and expand their businesses. Her unique skill is simplifying complex marketing concepts, making resources accessible, and easy to understand.  https://arbacooper.com/home   Kundalini Yoga REMOVING EMOTIONAL FATIGUE and FEAR OF the FUTURE https://youtu.be/XKkrT8TFnVE?feature=shared   Wine and Food  Bubbles - most women like bubbles .  Gruet from New Mexico is still one  of the best WINE   the best value and quality TRY GRUET ROSE NV Brut Rosé $17.00   CONACT Valerie Hail valerie@allinourminds.com www.allinourminds.com

MOM'S UNDER STRESS BEST GIFTS For this Mother's Day give your mom the gift of serenity, calmness and peace for her Spring Rejuvenation day. I got this idea from a conversation with Kari Warberg Block who recently relinquished her CEO responsibilities to a new hire, the CEO for EARTHKIND.  KARI is the FOUNDER and ( was CEO) of EARTHKIND. ( READ MORE about her progressive NON POISONOUS Rodent product here.) https://www.kariwarbergblock.com/forging-new-paths-embracing-change-one-step-at-a-time/ One of the first steps that Kari took in relinquishing the CEO position was to rejuvenate herself.  Which is what this podcast is about to give my listeners ideas to help your mom enjoy serenity, peace and calmness on her special day.  As her transition to being the rejuvenated Kari, mom, grandmother, wife “new adventure woman”, she  took an intense, all natural cleansing treatment at Optimum Health in Austin,Texas  https://www.optimumhealth.org/ohi-austin The focus is how to bring a balance in your life by eating clean food.  Kari says..“The food, 100% raw and plant-based, was absolutely delicious. Even the seven days of juice fasting—spread across the three weeks—wasn't as hard as I imagined. After the initial adjustment, I wasn't hungry, and my energy skyrocketed.” If the raw food vegetables might be too much for mom ..here are some suggestions using all ORGANIC products: For the breakfast or brunch in bed: organic strawberry's topped on  organic plain yogurt, sprinkled with almonds, drizzled with local honey.  Next a Brunch : grilled peasant bread, a slather of her favorite condiment, smashed avocado or HUMMUS.  I like arugula to add flavor and color to the plate and the bread, organic cherry tomatoes for color and flavor.  Why not add some festive bubbles: GRUET or non alcoholic sparking apple cider.  Very festive. If a NATURAL setting appeals to her more, take her to a beautiful park with serene surroundings, a picnic lunch for ONE, and take her cell phone away. Last idea:   buy her a DO IT YOURSELF spa treatment at home. Everyone leaves the house for hours and let her have peace and quiet at home. I tribute all these ideas to Kari as she gave me the inspiration for a peaceful, serene and calm Mother's Day when we had a nice talk about her own steps she is taking for her new life transition . Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts

This is the weekly columnValentine's Day, the inspired capitalist fabrication of greeting card makers, florists, and chocolatiers, happens next Wednesday. Here are some notions about wine to titillate your cherished someone. This is something of a sweet and soft day, so shy away from dry, acidic whites. Sauvignon blanc is a splendidly versatile food wine, but anything that sometimes is described as a razor on the tongue is anything but soft and cuddly. Same goes for monster cabs. Brusque masculinity does not play well on Valentine's day.So, what does play?• Rosé is almost a cliché. A dozen roses and a bottle of Provence rosé—classic. There is a palette of choices to suit your sweetheart's palate—dry rosés, sweeter rosés, or even a white zinfandel (which is a rosé/blush wine).• Kinder, gentler reds:Lambrusco is among the lightest reds, has a bit of bubbles, and tastes of strawberries and blueberries.Pinot noir is the benchmark light red wine.Gamay is similar to pinot noir, tastes of cherry and banana.Cinsault has meaty, savory elements; show off, and maybe be suggestive, by pronouncing it correctly: “sin-so.”Primitivo/zinfandel—primitivo in Italy, zin in California, same grape. Relatively light wine. Raspberry jam flavors. Often high alcohol for what its worth on Valentine's.Grenache/garnacha—light body, strawberries, major component of Provence rosés• Sparkling wine. You can go big bucks Champagne, or dial it back with a domestic from California, New York Finger Lakes, west coast in general at half the price of Champagne. Gruet from New Mexico is splendid with a range of styles, most under $20. If you must go cheaper, cava from Spain or prosecco from Italy come into play. Sparkling prosecco has a blush of sweetness and its affordable cost helps offset the cost of the dozen roses.• Sweet wines for your sweetie. If your sugar likes sugar, consider moscato wines—Moscato d'Asti is sparkling. Look for sparkling wines labeled demi-sec. Gewürztraminer, chenin blanc, viognier, riesling all come in sweeter versions (caution, they also are made dry). Ice wines, sauternes, tokaji can be rich and sweet, also expensive. Wines labeled “late harvest” can be counted on to be sweet—winemakers harvest early for dryness, late for concentrated sugar and fruitiness. The best sweet wines are balanced by acidity.Final thought: if you know your darling and her taste in wine, you can never go wrong by pouring what she/he loves.Last round“She tore my valentine into two pieces,” Tom said halfheartedly. “Fortunately, I had not given her the rosé wine yet, so I drank the whole bottle myself.” This is a public episode. Lake Sihwa in South Korea is home to the world's largest operating tidal power station, using the tides to generate enough power for a city of half a million people. This regular rise and fall of the seas is more predictable than sunny or windy weather and can be forecast years in advance. Nine thousand miles away in Northern Ireland is Strangford Lough. A narrow inlet leading to the mighty Atlantic Ocean means it's one of the world's best sites for harnessing tidal energy. The fast and strong currents have led to the world's first commercial-scale tidal energy power station being built here. But now that's being decommissioned. The technology for harnessing tidal energy has been around for more than half a century and the potential to create energy from the sea is huge. Yet tidal power only accounts for a tiny proportion of the global renewable energy mix. Presenter Graihagh Jackson finds out what's holding tidal power back. Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts

This is the weekly newspaper column.Wedding bubbly 6-5-2023June—the wedding month. Time for celebration and Champagne. Well, yes and no.Celebration, surely. Champagne at the wedding? Let's think about that. Many weddings, at least the reception part, are boisterous, topsy-turvy events. A wonderful whirl of activities by an eclectic gathering of people who likely fill out the entire bell curve of wine drinkers.Photo by Roman BoedTrue champagne starts out at $40 a bottle and quickly bubbles up from there. There are more cost-efficient sparkling lubricants to encourage bonhomie and create a festive nimbus around the newlyweds.Consider two sparkling wines made the same way as Champagne—where the second fermentation occurs in the bottle you pour. The fancy name is méthode traditionnelle. When such sparkling is made in France, but not in the Champagne region, it typically is labeled crémant or with a specific appellation designation. These can be found in the $25-50 range. When the sparkling is made in Spain, it is called cava, and major values abound. Bottle prices can be as low as $15 and many of your guests likely could not tell the difference between cava and a Champagne costing tens times as much. In fact, since both crémant and cava can be lighter and crisper with more approachable fruit flavors, many may prefer those pours over wallet-wacker wines. If you want to stay within the borders of both the USA and your budget, there are affordable bubbles made in Washington, California, Oregon, and New York. Korbel, for instance, makes a lovely California brut rosé for $15. And never forget the amazing, affordable sparkling Gruet makes in New Mexico—an astonishing treasure wine writers have touted so often as a hidden gem it no longer is a hidden gem. Gruet definitely remains a gem, however, at less than $20.Finally, there is the sparkling darling with soaring popularity—Italy's prosecco. The wine is made using the cost-efficient tank method, creating a creamy pour in the $10-15 range. Father's of brides can easily find succor in this choice, and a host of guests will celebrate the host's bubbly call.Champagne has its nuptial niche. We explore that next week.Tasting notes.• Mack & Schühle Art of Earth Prosecco Frizzante DOC: Simple, pleasant, fresh, good acidity. Great example of tastiness and affordable quality. $12-16 Link to my review• Josh Prosecco Rosé DOC: Charming crowd pleaser. Light, balanced, versatile. Excellent sipped by itself. $15 Link to my review• Scharffenberger Brut Rosé Excellence Sparkling Wine Mendocino County NV: Plush, creamy, vibrant acidity. $24-28 Link to my reviewLast round: The wedding was so emotional, even the cake was in tiers. We are tasting the Gruet Winery Non-vintage Brut Sparkling Wine. This sparkling wine is made in the Methode Champenoise using 100% New Mexico grapes. The Gruet family started making champagne in Bethon, France since the 1960s and expanded to New Mexico in 1989. The vineyard expansion by the Gruet family continues a winemaking history in New Mexico that started in the late 1600s. This sparkling wine is made in the Champagne method, so we discuss the details of how that is done and compare against Prosecco, Cava, and Cap Classique from South Africa. We also discuss different styles and sweetness levels of sparkling wine.   Gruet winery history: https://www.gruetwinery.com/heritage How champagne is made: https://champagneschool.com/how-is-champagne-made/ 2 articles about styles of champagne: https://www.decanter.com/learn/blanc-de-noirs-champagne-vs-blanc-de-blancs-44916/ and https://winefolly.com/deep-dive/how-to-choose-champagne/ Method Cap Classique: https://glassofbubbly.com/cheers-to-south-african-sparkling-wine-a-guide-to-the-method-cap-classique/ Prosecco: https://www.winemag.com/2018/12/04/everything-about-prosecco/ 2 articles about New Mexico wine country: https://nmwine.com/ and https://winerycrasher.com/index.php/2020/07/19/new-mexico-wine/ The Champagne Cartel's blog on food pairing: https://champagnecartel.com/10-perfect-snacks-serve-champagne/     Send feedback to timetotastetx@gmail.com Check out the Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/timetotastetx/ Visit our website: https://www.timetotastetx.com Intro-Outro music by GabrielDouglas from Pixabay

Bottle Barn's vast selection. Bottle Barn wine buyer Barry Herbst joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger to taste and describe some recent competition winners available at Bottle Barn, which is the sponsor of this radio show and podcast. Dan Berger has decades of experience as a wine judge and wine competition manager. This year's competition season is full of important appointments. Speaking of competition and the upcoming Winter olympics, Dan Berger mentions Ice Wines, some of which are coming from New York and Michigan these days. First Tastings Barry begins with a Gruet sparkling wine. Dan Berger says that they have figured out how to get the grapes from the vineyard in northern New Mexico to the winery in southern New Mexico. It is an expensive process that has to be done carefully. Think-skinned varieties can go for days but thin-skinned grapes like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have only a few hours before they wilt. This sells for $13.49 per bottle. Barry Herbst has also brought a 2019 Chalk Hill Chardonnay, from the Sonoma Coast, a Double Gold medal winner at the SF Chronicle competition. Wine Competitions The Chronicle competition is in Cloverdale, because the Chronicle people sponsored it where it was, when they joined forces. It used to be the Cloverdale Citrus Fair, before that. Steve Falk who used to work for the Chronicle, now is at the Press Democrat and is starting a new competition there. It is entirely for northern California. The Chronicle is by price categories. Dan Berger does not judge for the Chronicle because he disagrees with the price categories. Any wine is subjected to discounting. For example, at Bottle Barn, many wines are discounted. Therefore, the price categories are not valid, in Dan's opinion. However he likes the Press Democrat format. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the best deals on wine, beer and spirits. More Tastings Chalk Hill has been known for consistent Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. They are perennial winners in all the competitions and always reasonably priced. Dan Berger describes the Chalk Hill viticultural program led by Mark Lingenfelder who is very respected in the industry. These grapes show his quality, with lemon oil and ‘candle wax' flavor. That is an unusual term but it seems to work, both as a descriptor and as a source of more jokes than you might have thought possible at first. Next is a 2020 Mohua Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand that won a Triple Gold at Dan Berger's International Wine Competition. It's $10.99 at Bottle Barn and that's “... fabulous” says Dan. It's a classic example of New Zealand style wine, with its green grass and lime flavors. Then they sample a 2006 Gloria Ferrer Pinot Noir, a single vineyard designation from Sonoma Valley. This is Dan Berger's cellar wine for today. All agree it is delicious. Finally they taste a de Lorimier Primitivo that won various awards at Harvest Fair (Best of Class) and Double Gold at the Chronicle. It is part of the Wilsonn family portfolio. It is a warm wine that will go well with a winter stew.

The Trader Joe's Platinum Reserve Sonoma Brut NV (2020) is a Trader Joe's $14.99 non-vintage blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier sourced from vineyards in Sonoma County AVA in Northern California. The back label says this Bubbly was "produced and bottled by" Rack and Riddle, Healdsburg, California. They are an independent wine company that specializes in Traditional Method (same as Champagne) Sparkling wine. There are some California Sparkling wine producers that do have their own production facilities for the second fermentation of Sparkling wines. But there are many brands of California Sparkling wines that originate ate Rack and Riddle. The Trader Joe's Platinum Reserve Sonoma Brut NV (2020) is part of the Platinum Reserve series of Trader Joe's wines the break out of the typical TJ's $9.99 or less price point. The Fearless Flyer has mentioned in the past that the Platinum Reserve wines are equal in quality to wine selling at twice the price. That is a bit of a problem when talking about Traditional Method Sparkling wine since Champagne dominates the market and commands a price greater than the competition. The price of Champagne is not based on the cost of production as much as it is based on what you are willing to pay for it.Most other Traditional Method Sparkling wines that do not come from the Champagne region are forced to sell their wines at more affordable prices to compete. So is a non-vintage Sonoma County Bubbly made by a custom wine service, even if it is a very good custom wine service really equal to a thirty dollar California Sparkling wine? The answer is maybe, it could well be, but since we know nothing about the production details that would confirm its higher price, it hard to tell. At $14.99, the Trader Joe's Platinum Reserve Sonoma Brut NV (2020) competes directly with California Bubbly from Chandon, Piper, Gloria Ferrer, Roederer, and the New Mexico Bubbly from Gruet. With those other wines, there is a pedigree and the vineyards and the production techniques are documented, while Trader Joe's Bubbly is a one-off wine with no documentation.I have not tasted the Bubbly yet so all this musing may be mute if it turns out to be sensational and the Platinum Reserve wines that I have tried were well worth the money. It is just that with most Trader Joe's wine it is easy to tell if you are getting a bargain or not, these Platinum wines start to bring some doubt if the elevated price is warranted on every occasion. So on to the tasting portion, the alcohol content is a precise 12.72% and this is a Brut Bubbly or not sweet.Trader Joe's Platinum Reserve Sonoma Brut NV (2020) Tasting NotesThe color is at first looks almost silver, then turns to gold, the bubbles are tiny and energetic. The nose is slightly yeasty, with green apple, lemon, lime, grapefruit, melon, cherry, and a whiff of minerality. This is a nicely balanced Bubbly, it does taste expensive (but then again, so does its competition), it is both smooth and tart. It tastes of chewy crusty bakery bread, tart lemon, tart apple, cherry hard candy, and a salty sensation. The mid-palate adds kiwi, pear, soft spice, and a mix of peach and melon. The acidity is excellent it allows the flavors to unfold and will have you reaching for the next sip. This bottle will be empty before you realize it, so pace yourself. The SummaryI still do not know if Trader Joe's Platinum Reserve Sonoma Brut NV (2020) at $14.99 is better than its competition, there are some strong Bubbly in this price range. Is it worth $14.99? Yes, it definitely is, this is quality Bubbles. So, there you go. I do not know if this is a bargain, but you do get what you pay for and that is great drinking Sparkling wine.

Ep 352: The 2020 Thanksgiving Episode -- American Wine Edition

Wine for Normal People

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 23, 2020 36:01

2020 has been unlike any other, so we are recommending some different things for this year’s annual Thanksgiving show. This year has been tough for everyone, but small, family-owned wineries have been hit pretty hard by fires, lack of tourism, and in some cases, rough harvest conditions. Thanksgiving is the quintessential American holiday, so for this year, especially, we’re recommending that we show support for great American, family-owned wineries and their wines that pair perfectly with any kind of Thanksgiving food you decide to eat.   We start out with a few important announcements: The Wine Resources section of the WFNP site is now live. Check it out!  This year I’m running the holiday book offer again! Details here:   Here are the show notes: Regardless of where you are or who you are with, our #1 Thanksgiving tip this year (in this kind of sucky and restrictive year without our loved ones in many cases): Drink something really fantastic – haul out the wine that you’ve been saving and have it now. Celebrate that you are here, that you are ok, that you will make it through this tough time.   We then spend the show traveling the country from west to east, recommending wines from all the top quality regions: California Santa Barbara: The Pinot is perfect for the meal and really goes with anything. Lumen, Holus Bolus, Ampelos, Dragonette, and Marimar are a few I like Paso Robles: We’re a broken record on this one – Rhône style red and white blends from Tablas Creek, Italian varietals from Giornata, and for red meat fuller “meaty-style” veggies: Hearst Ranch and Halter Ranchfor hefty red blends. Sonoma: The Underground Wine Events Winery list will suffice but we specifically mention excellent rosé of Pinot Noir from Bruliam, tasty sparkling from Keller Estate and Longboard, and, as I mentioned in my piece with the Splendid Table on NPR – ACORN Winery’s Cabernet Franc. Napa: Bearing the brunt of the wildfires this year, we recommend supporting producers who have been affected if you can. Here is a list, but we mention Smith-Madrone (their Riesling is perfect for TG), Cain Winery, Chateau Boswell, and Fairwinds Estate – all whose properties were completely destroyed in the fires. Sierra Foothills: Andis is always my pick and the Semillon is perfect with the herbs of the Thanksgiving feast. The Zin is powerful but nuanced and would be great if you are grilling Oregon Also affect by fires this year and chockful of family owned producers (but make sure you check the big, hulking winery list in the Wine Resources part of the site to avoid buying from a conglomerate), Oregon makes great Pinot Noir, unoaked Chardonnay, and Gamay – all great with every part of a traditional, savory Thanksgiving meal. Some favorites: Bergström, Torii Mor, Cristom, Lingua Franca Washington With more body, power, and alcohol, the wines of Washington are fantastic for grilled foods, beef stews, meatloaf, and hearty food you may decide to have in lieu of traditional TG food. Walla Walla, Yakima, and the larger Columbia Valley AVAs are great. I mention Pepper Bridge, Amavi, Sleight of Hand, Saviah, Hightower, and Delille Texas Hands down, the winning wine in Texas right now is Tempranillo. A bolder, higher alcohol version than the original Spanish wine, these wines will be great with Spanish cheeses (Manchego) and the same foods we mention for Washington wines. Spicewood, Perdenales are mentioned.    We mention Michigan for its Riesling, New Mexico for its large sparkling brand, Gruet, and Colorado for some of its emerging wineries as well   Finger Lakes, New York Riesling, Riesling and more Riesling is my recommendation. Dry, off-dry, sweet, dessert – all work with herbs, spices, butter and fat. Riesling is an MVP – it can also handle curry, Chinese food, Indian spices, and any food with heat. And Finger Lakes, with the traditional peachy, white flower, mineral bouquet, its stupendous acidity and lower alcohol make it a complete must-have. Anthony Road Wine Company’s Late Harvest Vignoles is the dessert wine of the century – a native/hybrid grape made in a sweet style, also noted in the Splendid Table segment.   Long Island, New York From my native land, M.C. Ice and I wax poetic on sparkling wine from Lieb and Sparkling Pointe, and then mention great medium bodied Cabernet Franc and Merlot from these gorgeous island wineries. With these kinds of profiles and more moderate alcohol (make sure to check that’s the case before you buy), you will have reds that can weave their way in and out of hard-to-pair dishes – from green beans to creamed spinach to fried turkey. And the sparkling may be an even better match for all that – but you be the judge.   Virginia It has been a terrible year for the wineries of Virginia. Terrible frost settled at the beginning of the growing season, killing off the vines before they had a chance to form. The tiny harvests were fine but there won’t be much wine to sell from 2020, an unfortunate occurrence in the time of Covid. We mention the fabulous Albariño from Afton Mountain (I mentioned their sparkling, Bollicine, in the Splendid Table segment) and unoaked Chardonnay from Pollak, which are our seafood picks, as well as the versatile whites and reds of Linden and Glen Manor. We highly recommend dessert wine from VA – it’s a perfect end to the meal!   We are so grateful for you and we hope you open something fantabulous to celebrate that you are making it through this year, no matter how hard it has been!   Elizabeth and M.C. Episode 2. 1984. Big Brother. Ever heard of it? Yeah you have. Whether you have an older sibling or you’re an only child, chances are you have felt that nagging feeling that someone is watching you; waiting to call you out for eating that chocolate cookies that was supposed to be for your friend's party. Yeah, ok we have all been there. The thing about 1984 is you can’t leave “there”. George Orwell writes with committed fury about the dystopian nightmare that results when people stop paying attention and lose their freedoms. It's so real that you will definitely need those chocolate cookies to help you work through some issues here. We've paired it with a French 75, a cocktail mainly comprised of champagne, gin and lemon. After the personal vendetta that 1984 had against gin, we felt a moral responsibility to remind everyone that GIN IS GOOD. Umm yes. Our featured gin is the incredible award winning, Barr Hill Gin and our bubbly is the one and only Gruet's Sauvage. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The Story of New Mexico BubblyThe Gruet Blanc de Noirs is a non-vintage blend of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay sourced from vineyards in New Mexico along with grapes from, I believe, California and Washington. The term "Blanc de Noirs" translates to White from Black, yes, I know, White wine grapes are usually green and Red wine grapes are purple or red in most cases, but for some reason the French use terms that are color blind.Gilbert Gruet started farming a vineyard in Champagne in the 1950s and the 1960s founded his Champagne winery near the village of Bethon in Champagne, France. He heard from other French winemakers about a promising, off the beaten path grape growing region in New Mexico. He decided to check it out and in the 1980s started a vineyard and by 1989 was selling New Mexico Bubbly based on the Sparkling wines from Champagne. In 2010, the Gruet Blanc de Noirs was named to Wine Spectators Top 100 Wines list, not bad for a Bubbly selling for less than $15.The Gruet Blanc de Noirs is produced with the Traditional or Champagne Method of production. Here the grapes are fermented the first time, the 1st fermentation is where all the secret House Style techniques take place. After fermentation, the wine is bottled, but before a temporary top is attached a measured amount of yeast and sugar is added to every bottle. The 2nd fermentation then takes place inside the bottle, the yeast and sugar do their job in about 30 days, but the dead yeast and residue stay in the bottle for a minimum of 18 months. During that time the CO2 that was released as a result of the 2nd fermentation incorporates into the body of the wine. After 18 months or so, the dead yeast and gunk are removed from each bottle and the bottle is topped off with a little bit of wine and maybe some sugar to reach the intended sweetness level, such as Brut or Extra Dry. Just like they do it in Champagne only this time it's occurring in New Mexico. The alcohol content is 12%.The Tasting NotesThe color is pale gold with a hint of pink, along with a flurry of pretty little bubbles. The nose is crisp and clean, toasty vanilla, pear, grapefruit, green apple, and black cherry. This is an elegant Bubbly, well-balanced with tantalizing hints of flavor. It tastes of cherry and vanilla, peach and pear, tart grapefruit, and raspberry. The mid-palate shows that salty, nutty thing that 18 months of "on lees" provides, ripe McIntosh apple, and a flash of tangerine. The flavors are all subtle, they float in and out. The acidity is sneaky, it will get you reaching for another sip. The finish is soft and long. The Summary * I have to admit my favorite Bubbly is the Pinot Noir based stuff, Blanc de Noirs, of course, I'm perfectly happy sipping the Chardonnay-based stuff as well. So, I am predispositioned to dig the Gruet Blanc de Noirs. * We last reviewed this Bubbly in 2010 and while the price has risen in the last 9 years my enthusiasm seems to have remained. * This is an excellent Sparkling wine/Bubbly. It is not merely good for the price. * I have sampled the next level up Gruet Bubbly (around $25 to $30) when compared directly with Champagne Bubbly 2 or 3 times the price and in my mind, the Gruet won. * When making your Bubbly purchase for the upcoming holidays let flavor and texture be your guide, not just price tag. Inexpensive Bubbly can give the entry-level Champagne Bubbles a run for their money. For additional information check out the companion podcast below

Nowadays, working in the food world does not equal a private life. Chefs are no longer chained to their stoves, critics have lost their anonymity, and writers can’t hide behind their computer screens. Instead, we all charge our Instagram posts and Twitter feeds with salacious words and images, paired with hashtags that will get us even more exposure. But how does this affect dating and finding love? On today’s show, Jacqueline and Ben discuss how exploring relationships on Love Bites is affecting their emotional hunt for something real, and how Jacqueline describes what she does to prospective dates without giving too much away, since she’s unavoidably oh-so-Google-able. Then the team is joined by Leiti Hsu, the host of Heritage’s Word of Mouth and a culinary connector who’s gone beyond food writing to connect big brands and startups with people in the hospitality field. How does she navigate dating when she travels so much, and spends a vast majority of her time with food royalty?
