By request I put together a shallow water Mutton Snapper podcast. It is long podcast that is packed with little educational nuggets and tips for catching legal size Mutton Snappers on the patch reefs. Please keep in mind that what I do may not work for you.
How to Catch Mutton Snappers Using a Titanium Leader Mutton Snappers in the Florida Keys can be extremely challenging to catch at times, but during the winter months targeting them gets even more challenging when large schools of King Fish migrate through the Florida Keys. To avoid having to continually keep from tying on new hooks due to King Fish cutting off your hooks this winter, I highly recommend using a short trace of Titanium Leader rather than use Single Strand Wire. I prefer AFW Brand Titanium over standard Single Strand metallic wire for the following reasons: It is much more forgiving and has a little stretch to it Anglers can tie Titanium to the hook using a clinch or Albright Knot, no haywire twist is required. Much more Kink Resistant Compared to Single Strand Wire Live Bait Action Learn How to Catch Mutton Snapper using Titanium by tying the rig I use below 8-12 Inch Piece of 30 Pound Titanium Wire tied to a 80 pound SPRO swivel connects the the titanium leader to the 30 pound fluorocarbon Mutton Snapper Set-Up I talk about in Episode 063: How to Make the Best Mutton Snapper Fishing Leader The Best Pre-Made Titanium Leader made by R&R Tackle. https://randrtackle.com/collections/titanium-leaders/products/titanium-leaders?variant=12908106055741 Mutton Snapper Geographic Range Mutton Snapper populations are the most abundant in the waters around Bahamas, off South Florida, throughout the entire Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and Bermuda. Scientific studies indicate that Mutton Snappers can be found as far North as New England down to South Eastern Brazil. Mutton Snapper Color and Pigmentation All Mutton Snappers have blue facial recognition markings that are unique to each fish. The Mutton Snapper blue facial recognition marks can be found just below the eyes of these fish. Muttons Snapper fisherman call these facial marks “Blue Lightening Bolts” as they match the personality of these hard fighting Florida Keys fish. All Mutton Snappers are defined by their famous sub-dorsal body “Black Spot” situated just above the Mutton Snappers lateral line below the anterior end of the dorsal fin. The famous Mutton Snapper black spot is more defined in younger Mutton Snappers and tends to get smaller and fades in color the older the Mutton Snapper gets. The Mutton Snapper black spot is same size as the pupil. Mutton Snappers are characterized by their spectacular colorations. Mutton Snappers exhibit two types of color variations, Mutton Snapper fisherman categorize these fish color variations as “Pink and Green”. “Pink” Mutton Snapper-The “Pink” coloration of Mutton Snappers species call the deep reefs and wrecks home. These deep water Mutton Snappers also can also display bright Yellow Coloration, with Blue, Reds and Pinks. These fish are awesome looking Mutton Snappers. “Green” Mutton Snapper- The shallower water Mutton Snappers have Greenish Olive color Mutton Snappers inhabit shallower reefs. Mutton Snapper Growth Rates Scientific studies show indicates that Mutton Snappers grows 5-6 inches a year for the first 2 years then fairly rapidly during for the first 2 years(5-6 inch growth rate, but after year 2 they drop to 3.5 inches a year in growth. Then after year 3 the growth rate slows even more. Studies show the fish grow in weight the fastest when they reach the ages 5 and 10 years old. Muttons Snappers are said to live 15 to 20 years. The current Florida State record Mutton Snapper is 30 pounds and 4 oz. This state record Mutton Snapper was caught in the Dry Tortugas National Park off the Florida Keys. Mutton Snapper Bait Dead Bait and Live Bait The best live bait for Mutton Snappers is live pilchards, pinfish, small jacks, blue runners, cigar minnows, goggle eyes, speedos and live ballyhoo. I will also target Mutton Snappers using fresh dead speedos, goggle eyes, mullet heads, chunks of bonito, fresh ballyhoo plugs as well as jumbo live shrimp. Mutton Snapper Artificial Lures Mutton Snappers respond very well to slow pitch jigging or high speed jigging. White Buck tails jigs tipped with fresh dead Ballyhoo or fresh dead Bonito strips work very well. How Does the Mutton Snapper Taste? The Mutton Snapper is my personal favorite out of all the Snapper species to eat. The Mutton Snappers white fillets are considered excellent table fare. The Mutton Snapper meat is white, flaky and light, firmer. The Mutton Snapper makes for a great whole backed fish and is perfect fish for the grill. Mutton Snapper Facts-Learning about the Mutton Snapper will help you catch more Mutton Snappers in the Florida Keys this year. Muttons Snapper are by far the most finicky eaters of all the Snappers. Divers have reported that these fish are extremely shy underwater and very tough to get close too. They have very strong survival instincts, making them tough to catch and times. Muttons Snappers can put up a very hard fight when hooked. The Mutton Snapper will angle their large broad flat sides toward the fisherman during the fight. When a an anglers hooks a large Mutton Snapper they are in for a challenge because a large Mutton Snapper will fight hard all the way to the surface, giving the fisherman a solid workout. Mutton Snappers have “crab crusher” V-shaped teeth on the roof of their mouth. Mutton snapper feed on shellfish and all types of small fish. Mutton Snapper Fishing Regulations in the Florida Keys We are allowed to keep 5 Mutton Snapper per person per day and must be 18 inches in total length to keep. Mutton Snappers are included in Aggregate Snapper Bag Limit of 10 snapper per person/day (excluding red snapper and vermilion snapper) – Note: cubera snapper less than 30-inches total length are included in this limit. Keep up to date on the Florida Keys Yellowtail Snapper fishery regulations and closures by clicking here https:https://safmc.net/regulations/regulations-by-species/mutton-snapper/
How to Make the Best Mutton Snapper Fishing Leader for targeting Mutton Snappers in the Florida Keys Mutton Snapper Fishing Rods In my opinion the absolute best Mutton Snapper Fishing Rods are Spiral Wrapped Fishing Rods that are light weight. With a Spiral Wrapped fishing rod an angler can now fight larger fish with less fatigue over long periods of time and worry less about the pulling the hook. Spiral Wrapped Fishing Rod Advantages Designed to reduce torque Will not twist under heavy load-perfect balance Extremely stable How to Select a Muttons Snapper Fishing Rod Listed below are the Spiral Wrapped fishing rods I use on Mutton Snapper fishing charters in the Florida Keys. These rods are very light, extremely strong and have the perfect action for setting the hook on large Mutton Snappers and have enough backbone for fighting large Mutton Snappers. Both types of fishing rods listed below are custom made by Adrenaline Custom Fishing Rods. Rods I Recommend for Mutton Snapper Custom Made by Adrenaline Fishing Rods 6’6 40/80 Medium Fast Action Heavy Power Spiral Wrapped Rod. *Fuji Silicon Nitride Guides. These fuji guides are heavy duty. This rod has a fast action tip to reduce pulling hooks. This is a thick rod with a lot of backbone. Cost-$219.00 6’6 30/80 Medium Fast Action X-Heavy Power-Graphite Composite (Ultra Light) *Fuji Silicon Nitride Guides. This rod is extremely light, has a fast action tip to reduce pulling hooks and thinner than the rod I described above. Cost-$259.00 *The guides on my Mutton Snappers rods are all high quality Fuji Silicon Nitride Guides. These guides are larger in diameter so when I reel swivels through these guides I am not concern about breaking them. If you have a favorite rod you like bottom fishing with, but the rod does not have heavy duty Fuji Silicon Nitride Guides, I recommend that you have your the guides replaced with larger diameter Fuji Silicon Nitride Guides. Most custom rod shops will do this for you. I highly recommend Fuji Silicon Nitride Guides. How to Make a Removable Weight for Mutton Snapper Fishing https://vimeo.com/362443286 How to Make the Best Mutton Snapper Fishing Leader Balloon Fisher King balloon clips can be a highly effective quick and easy, adjustable down bait weight clip for bottom fishing, suspending a bait at specific depth in the water column for slow trolling live or dead bait. I personally like to use an 18 pound 4 inch zip-tie to connect a bank sinker to the Balloon Fisher King pressure clip. I slide a small zip-tie though the groove in the clip and attach the clip to a bank sinker weight, then clip off the tag end of the zip-tie. I like to use a zip-tie because I want the weight to break way in the event it gets caught on the bottom with a big fish. The Best Mutton Snapper Fishing Reels I prefer using the Shimano Talica 20 and 16 2-Speed fishing reels for Mutton Snapper fishing in the Florida Keys. All the reels I use use for Mutton Snapper fishing are spooled with 30 pound Power Pro Braid. Why do I Spool My Reels with 30 Pound Braid 30 pound braided line spooled on my Mutton Snappers reels gives me a lot of line capacity. This allows us to fish great depths at ease using smaller light weight reels. When we hook large fish like wahoo, I have plenty of line capacity on the smaller reel, therefore I don’t have to worry about getting spooled. Because the 30 pound braided line has a extremely small diameter it cuts through the water and finds the bottom pretty easily in all types of current, wind and sea conditions. How to Make the Best Mutton Snapper Fishing Leader Mutton Snapper Wind-On Light Tackle Leader Step 1 Double the 30 pound braid main line using a Spider Hitch knot. Spider Hitch to Double the 30 pound Braid Line, why do I use it? A Spider Hitch Knot is simpler to tie than the Bimini Twist Knot. By doubling the 30 pound braided line using a Spider Hitch Knot I increase the breaking strength of the 30 pound braided line by 20-30% or more than its manufactured rating. Clients can now fight larger fish they hook while bottom fishing with higher drag settings. Step 2 Tie a 2 ft. piece of 40 pound fluorocarbon to the 30 pound braid double line using a Bristol Knot. This short piece of 40 pound fluorocarbon leader is used for attaching the removable in-line sinker. *The importance using this short Piece of 40 FluorocarbonPound Leader. I have found that the standard Balloon Fisher king clips work very well when pressure clipped to 40 pound fluorocarbon line, but I do struggle a little when I attaching these pressure clips to fluorocarbon line greater than 40 pound fluorocarbon leader. Fluorocarbon leader line has no stretch and is capable of handling greater weight than monofilament fishing line or braid making it perfect for attaching heavy inline weights for Mutton Snapper fishing in the Florida Keys. Another benefit of this short connection is that it acts a “buffer” connection between the braided line and the long leader connection. For example, when I need to replace the long leader line for any reason, I simply cut it at the swivel connection and re-tie quickly. A Bristol Knot has a smaller profile than most and passes easily through my rod guides with ease. I get an extremely strong knot when I tie this short piece of 40 lb. fluorocarbon line to the 30 pound double braided main line using the Bristol Knot. Fluorocarbon does have a smaller line diameter than monofilament so it makes it very easy for me to attach the Balloonfisher King removable inline weight to the short piece of fluorocarbon, more so than when I used to use monofilament. This piece of short piece of 40 lb. fluorocarbon takes some abuse so I recommend checking frequently. *I will be testing a short piece of heavy hollow core braid line over the next couple month that may potentially replace this short piece of 40 pound Flurocarbon similar to the removable planer bridal sold by tackleroom.com. Step 3 Measure out 70-100 feet of 30 pound fluorocarbon leader then connect this long leader piece of 30 pound fluorocarbon leader line The Main reason why I use Fluorocarbon leader is not only for stealth Fluorocarbon line has incredible abrasion resistance, it withstands the abuse of rigorous bottom fishing for Mutton Snappers in the Florida Keys and has minimal stretch. Step 4 Connect the short piece of 40 pound fluorocarbon (created in Step 2 ) to the 30 pound fluorocarbon longer leader (created in Step 3) via a 75 pound Diamond Brand Ball Bear Swivel using and improved clinch knot. The Diamond Ball Bearing Swivel does the following: Prevents the Balloon Fisher King In-Line Weight from sliding down the line onto the hook. Diamond Ball Bearings swivels significantly reduce line twists compared to all others I have used to date. Step 5 Tie on a hook-I use circle hooks (sizes 2, 3, or 4 inline or offset) I use either Gamakatsu or Owner brand. Size the hooks appropriately for the live bait. I prefer using an improved clinch knot for tying hooks to the terminal end of the main leader. Step 6 Hook the Live Bait-When power drifting or slow trolling the bottom for Mutton Snappers using the engine, I always hook the live bait through the nostrils. I then peg the live bait to the hook using a Bait Button this help prevent live the bait from wrapping over on itself and fouling. Step 7 Set the Leader with the live bait-When deploying the rig, put the reel in free spool with the clicker on. Power the boat forward a little to get the bait swimming behind the boat, get the leader stretched out and stop at the swivel. I use my Rhodan Trolling 120 Volt Trolling motor in Track Mode to power the boat hands free using the remote while setting the lines. This allows me to make sure the baits are set correctly. The Rhodan Trolling Motor gives me a signifiant advantage especially on days with light current and no wind. Step 8 Once leader is complete stretched out (make sure the bait is swimming nice behind the boat) attach the the Balloon Fisher King pressure clip with weight directly above the Diamond Ball Bearing swivel. Attach the clip directly above the swivel that connects the short piece of 40 pound fluorocarbon to the 30 pound fluorocarbon. Power boat forward and send the bait to the bottom slowly while the boat is moving forward. Do not set the bait like you are in a race or you asking for a large tangle. Step 9 Put the Mutton Snapper in the Boat When the fish comes to the top I have the client walk up the rail, then I come in and quickly remove the inline weight. One the clip is removed the swivel is small enough to reel through the rod guides to the reel the fish all the way to the boat. Set the Rod in the Rod holder and start fishing and let the rod holder and boat hook hook the fish. Learn How to Catch to Mutton Snapper in the Florida Keys using these tips and techniques. Ball Bearing Swivels In previous podcasts I mentioned that I used the SPRO brand power swivels(50lb-80lb) for constructing wind-on leaders for targeting Mutton Snappers, but a few months ago I made the switch to the Diamond Brand Ball Bearing Swivels(50lb-70lb.) I made this change because I was seeing way too many SPRO swivel failures and was seeing an increase line twist problems resulting in leader failures. I have been extremely happy since I made the switch a few months back from SPRO to the Diamond Brand Ball Bearing swivels especially when using use long leaders(50-100ft) and heavy weights. I basically eliminated the line twists problems I was having and I have not yet seen swivel failure since I switched from SPRO Power Swivels to Diamond Ball Bearing Swivels. If you want to learn more about selecting the right swivel for the application I highly suggest reading this article https://georgepoveromo.com/content.php?pid=50 To extend the life of the ball bearing swivels and get the most of out their performance, I spray them with a little WD-40 out of the box, then after each trip the swivels get sprayed down with hot water and hit again with WD-40 prior to the next fishing trip. The Diamond Ball bearing swivels added another level of confidence to my Mutton Snapper fishing game, they have also saved me a ton of money but extending the life of my fluorocarbon leaders. I purchase mine from Melton Tackle Product Description: Diamond Rotary Ball Bearing Swivels are the finest ball bearing swivels manufactured today. Welded eye rings for added strength and both ends of the swivel rotate individually to eliminate any chance of line twist. They cost 12.59 for a pack of 6. One pack will last me me month, it just depends on how many times I snag the bottom which maybe once every 3 charters. https://www.meltontackle.com/diamond-rotary-ball-bearing-swivel.html Bait Buttons For Mutton Snapper Presentation is everything when it comes to live bait fishing for Mutton Snappers, these fish can be very finicky. I just recently found a product online called Bait Buttons (https://www.baitbuttons.com/) These little buttons keep the live baits and dead baits locked and stable on the hook. It is very hard for frisky live baits baits such as the pilchard or live ballyhoo to wiggle its way off the hook or flip back over the hook resulting in a fouled up bait with it pegged on the hook with a bait button. On a recent Mutton fishing charter trip my clients were getting more Mutton Snapper bites and the hook up rate drastically improved. We also landed a couple nice Yellow Jacks and caught a very nice African Pompano along with a few Amberjacks using the bait buttons. I had been using several types of materials(soft beads, rubber bands and zip ties) to keep live baits and dead baits from sliding up and on the hook and the line, until I found the Bait Buttons. For detailed instructions on how to use the bait buttons just click on the link below. This link will show you exactly how I use the buttons when hooking a live pilchard on the hook for target Mutton Snappers https://www.baitbuttons.com/techniques/live-minnows I also had a chance to test out the Bait Buttons for Yellowtail Snapper fishing using dead bait. It is extremely tough for any fish to rip a bait off the hook with this this bait button. It keeps the bait pegged on the hook. Below is young client of mine with the first batch of jumbo size Yellowtail Snappers he caught using the bait buttons. We used only 6 tiny pieces of bonito the entire trip which his basically un-heard of when it comes to flat lining for Yellowtails to catch these Jumbos, not to the mention he lost another 5 or 6 Yellowtails to the Sharks and the Barracudas on this trip. I encourage you to try the Bait Buttons out. You can order these directly though the Bait Button Website: https://www.baitbuttons.com/buy-now/original/I am using two different styles of bait buttons: BIG GAME Bait Buttons-Larger Hooks Pre-loaded Dispenser (with 25 buttons)-Cost is $8.89 Original Bait Buttons-Smaller Hooks Pre-loaded Dispenser (with 100 buttons)-$8.89 Make sure you read the product descriptions carefully before ordering. To save time I preload the bait buttons on the hooks before I go fishing. Captains Choice Pure Sardine Chum Should have been using this chum years ago, It is 100% natural Sardine chum and it awesome! This chum is now my number one choice of chum for Yellowtail Snapper fishing in the Florida Keys. The fish love sardine oil in the Captains Choice chum The ballyhoo and speedos go nuts for this stuff so if you are planning on visiting the Florida Keys and are planning on catching your own bait using a cast net or by using a Ballyhoop, then I highly recommend using Captains Choice. Captains Choice is used by the a majority of the commercial fishing fleet through out the Florida Keys as their chum of choice for targeting Yellowtail Snapper.
