He also described Nico as a good fisherman and a good person. 50:48 - Jeff shared that salt species are fighters, and with trout fishing, large trout are certainly going to fight; they're going to take you for a ride; they're going to run; they're going to trim and get rid of you; but Jeff mentioned that salt fish are a unique experience. 51:26 - Jeff notes that he's a trout fisherman in Colorado. 51:58 - Jeff mentioned that he went out last weekend to Arkansas in Colorado to gold Medal Water and shared that they really do a good job with the river by making it so accessible; there are bathrooms in different locations, and it's really built out and nice all the way down the long river. 53:26 - We talked about their trip to Baja Mexico, and Jeff shared that they have a guidebook in Colorado, and someone helped them with booking and arranging things. 56:00 - For Stillwater fly fishing situations, they recommend their Mystic M Series in the 10' 3" 6 weight, their M-Series Spey rod comes in at 12' 3", the M-Series Switch rod and Micro-Spey rods are built in an 11' 3" design, and also JXP in the 9-foot 6-weight. This high-performance fly rod is a great fit for making long casts on lakes in windy situations. You might also consider the Reaper X 9-foot, 7-weight rod. For the price, you won't find a better fly rod that can handle big flies, big fish, and delicate situations. 58:53 - We talked about the Dumb and Dumber Movie. 59:24 - Jeff shared an interesting story about how they went out a couple days ago with his wife to watch a fantastic movie called Cocaine Bear, as well as Top Gun and Maverick. You can find Jeff Brady here mysticoutdoors.com and on Instagram at: mysticflyrods Jeff Brady from Mystic Outdoors shared his experience fishing in Baja, Mexico. He also recommended some lodges and foods from their trip, mentioned their M-series fly rods, and shared his top 5 species of saltwater options to fly fish.

It sounds like it is an awesome way to chase these fish that we usually target by dropping baits. Lionel likes to live chum them up to the surface where you can see them and cast to specific fish and add a sight fishing element to the fun. This presents a whole new challenge to fly anglers and I am a big fan of the idea, definitely on my short list of things to do on the water.

In this episode, I am joined by Dave Doble of Tampa Bay Brewing Company. One of Tampa Bay's iconic and well-visited breweries, Tampa Bay Brewing Company is celebrating 25 years in July 2022. Visited by both Michael Jackson and Guy Fieri, many visitors know TBBC for its welcoming pubs in both Ybor City and Westchase. In the mid-1990s, the City of Tampa did not have many options for craft beer until John and Vicki Doble put their faith in their son Johnny's vision of opening a homebrew store called the Brew Shack. Johnny and his family grew that store into a brewpub and one of Tampa's first ‘destination' breweries. Once the pub opened, Johnny was the head brewer and Dave Doble left the family business to train as a pilot. Dave talks about when his brother tragically died in a fire in 2003, how he decided return to the brewery his family had founded. In our interview, Dave talks about that return and how he and his family decided to grow TBBC's business to its current heights. Dave also talks about changing the TBBC beer lineup and how the brewery's growth has been helped by Reef Donkey, a GABF Bronze-medal winning pale ale named for the Amberjack, a game fish which lives in Florida's wrecks and reefs. You can listen to the podcast here, or on your favorite podcast platform. The world of work is changing rapidly, yet dress shoes have barely changed since the 1800s. Through material innovation and a unique vertical supply chain, Amberjack is creating a new type of men's dress shoe. After years working with big companies like Cole Haan, Allen Edmonds, and Adidas, the founder Jonathan Peters got frustrated by how bleak the landscape of dress shoes had become. Work is changing, technology is advancing, yet dress shoes are stuck in the past. The brand wanted to create something new by avoiding the complicated supply chains full of shortcuts and compromises, and partnered with one of the best tanneries in the world. They've created entirely new materials for soles that are extra comfortable, and put leather and science fiction into the hands of craftsmen in Portugal. They also use 100% plastic-free packaging and promise their shoes will last a lot longer than the fast-fashion, disposable dress shoes they share a price-point with. In this episode of the MenswearStyle Podcast we interview Jonathan Peters, Founder of Amberjack about his career to date, and the unique concept of this new brand operating within the dress shoe category.  The idea came after the realisation of feeling unconnected with his shoes whilst working within the corporate world. He felt he could bring the same excitement many guys feel with clothing brands to the footwear world.  Our host Peter Brooker and Jonathan also chat about early prototypes, how to make shoes built for comfort, how the brand is adopting sustainability, and how to get a 10,000+ waitlist for a debut shoe.Whilst we have your attention, be sure to sign up to our daily newsletter here. Episode 039: Vertical Jigging Tips and Techniques: Selecting Vertical Jig Assist Hooks

Good Karma Sportfishing

Selecting the right vertical jig assist hook is very important. In this podcast I share my personal experiences with using both Braided Dacron and Kevlar Assist hooks. Braided Dacron Assist Cord Below are my reasons for the for why I discontinued using Vertical Jig Braided Dacron Assist Cords When vertical jig fishing the wrecks off Key Largo I want to be 100% confident that when I set a the hook when target Mutton Snappers and Groupers when using a vertical jig that my hook setting effort is being transferred fully to the vertical jig. I did not have this confidence when using a Vertical Jig rigged with a Dacron Assist Hook. When it came to the hook sets with the braided dacron assist, I felt the hook sets were not good when I was using Dacron assist cords as the stuff is pretty limp and does not command the hook very well, I personally felt it was tough to drive the hook into the jaw of a Grouper or Mutton Snappers for a good hook set. Very water absorbent which leads to breakage. The salt water eats away at the Dacron. After the end of each vertical jig trip I wash every jig in the sink throughly at my house. I found that this did not help extend the life of a Dacron Assist Cord. . Dacron has significant stretch, which leads to unnecessary line failures and break offs. Because the assist cord is rigged to the solid ring and braided Dacron is soft it tended to tangle a lot, the assist would constantly get wrapped around the leader and it would hang up on the jig, the assist split and solid rings. What a nightmare!  A lot of guys band aid this by adding shrink wrap over the Dacron, which is additional step. The Williamson Brand Jig, cheap dacron covered with shrink wrap to make it look appealing to the consumer. Yes it adds a layer of protection, but for only a couple vertical jig fishing trips.  I am not a fan of added shrink to assist cords because the stuff tears up. This allows for water to enter the small tears. The water gets trapped between the shrink and the dacron. Even if you are thoroughly cleaning your jigs at the end of day, you still can not clean the salt water trapped between the cord and heat shrink.  The cord is basically rotting inside shrink.  All it takes in one little nick from a little Tuna or Amberjack to create a tear. Go out a couple weeks later, the assist cord appears to look OK because all you see is the heat shrink, you can not actually inspect the interior cord itself because it is covered in the heat shrink. Kevlar Assist Cord I am currently using high quality Red Kevlar Assist Cord.  We purchased our Red Kevlar Assist Cords in bulk directly from a manufacture.  Before manufacturing the Kevlar we approved quality samples as I wanted to make sure the Kevlar was correct and my quality expectations were met. I was very happy with the process and now I have enough Kevlar Assist Cords to last me many years.   There are many different grades of red kevlar, so be careful when purchasing Kevlar at a lower price point online. Below are my reasons why I prefer Kevlar Assist Cords for Vertical Jigs. More abrasion resistant than Dacron. It commands the hook well because it is stiff and has no memory.  My client hook up rates sky rocketed after I made the change from Dacron to Kevlar. Since I made the switch to Kevlar I am much more confident in the vertical jig hook sets. Kevlar does not like UV light or salt water, but when compared  to Dacron my personal opinion is that Kevlar is better at fighting off these environmental elements than Dacron and do feel Kevlar It has much longer shelf life than Dacron. New Assist Cord Material I am Testing I also wanted to share this other material I am using to make assist hooks with that is killing it. I heard a few guys were using this stuff to make their jigging assist cords with, plus knew the stuff was bad ass because I have put it through hell over the past 2 years in other applications using it as outrigger line, chum bag line, bait pen line.  I was confident it would perform very well as an assist hook, so I made up a few to try out. Extremely happy. I heard that a few hard core vertical jig fisherman started using this material so I decided to put it through a trial phase. I am using New England Rope 1.8mm Micro Dynema Syperline, 350lb breaking strength. It has fairly decent salt water absorption resistance, no memory  superior abrasion resistance, extremely strong, hard to cut, commands the hook well, UV resistant, holds up in the heat, ties easily, has a little stretch. https://www.westmarine.com/buy/new-england-ropes--spyderline-micro-dyneema-braid-by-the-spool--P002_071_002_515?recordNum=46 New England Rope Soft Micro Dynema Syperline Manufactures Specifications  This spiderweb sized, high-performance line has a Dyneema SK-75 core inside a polyester double braid cover that provides superior strength for its tiny diameter. It is flexible, yet firm enough to be led through small leads, micro blocks and purchase systems and is also a great choice as sail ties for the performance Opti sailor. Key Features Available in spools of 50', 75' and 100' 1.8mm (5/64") diameter on a 100' spool and 350 pound breaking strength 2.8mm (1/8") diameter on a 75' spool and 1,250 pound breaking strength 3.8mm (5/32") diameter on a 50' spool and 1,860 pound breaking strength Best Use: Performance dinghy cascade systems, control lines, small one design cunninghams, traveler lines, vang systems, trapeze lines, outhauls, topping lifts, halyards, and twings Construction: Double braid Cover Fiber/Construction: Polyester braid Core Fiber/Construction: Dyneema SK-75 braid Stretch: 1.6% at 20% of breaking strength Buy the stuff in bulk for $29.00 from West Marine it comes in spools of 50’, 75’, and 100’ I will put the link up in my show notes.  Comes in a few colors to choose from. Take Care of Vertical Jigs To Extend the Shelf Life Remember after a day of fishing, make sure to wash all your vertical jigs throughly. To extend the life of my vertical jigs I wash each vertical jig(main body, hardware and the assist cords) after each fishing trip in my kitchen sink at home in hot water and Dawn Dish Soap.  If there is one thing I took away from organic chemistry labs in college, was hot water is the only thing that really works to dissolves salt particles safely without using harsh chemicals that can ruin you jigs.  Hot water is your best friend when it comes to removing salt particles from all your critical fishing gear, including those expensive reels and fishing rods.  Water from a hose does not throughly remove all the salt. New Vertical Jig Hook I am Testing Currently I am testing 3X Owner S-Double Size Hooks with Super Tin Finish. I have always liked the Shimano Wax Wing Vertical Jig Hooks, these are the same hooks(fang hooks). Stay tuned for results. https://www.ownerhooks.com/product/saltwater-double-hook/

How to Vertical Jig for Tunas, Snappers, Groupers, Wahoo, Amberjacks, Golden Tile Fish and Wahoo.  In this podcast I reveal new vertical jigging tips including a secret vertical jigging technique that I have not shared publicly on instagram or facebook. The new "secret technique" is guaranteed to catch you more Blackfin Tuna when you vertical jig the Islamorada Hump.  Here a few tips to help you get started or improve upon your vertical jigging game. My Jigging Set Up I use Shimano Twin Power 8000. It is an extremely light weight reel with awesome drag and ultra fast retrieve.  Perfect for my style of jigging. I prefer speed jigging. It is easy to do with the right equipment and its great work out.  Rods: Have Rods custom built for jigging that match your style. Rods need to be extremely light weight and built to match your style of vertical jigging.  I use rods built by Adrenaline Rods. You can visit www.adrenalinecustomfishingrods.com  There is so much information out there about jigging ones.  To keep it short and simple- Order one for Tuna Fishing and order one capable of handling a big Amberjack/Grouper. Do your home work. If you have questions about my rods just email me.  Terminal Tackle Set Up  I spool my reels used for jigging with 40 lb. braid line. The vertical jigs I use on my fishing charters perform at their best tied to 40 lb. braided line.  I double the braid line using a Spider Hitch knot.  I always make a double line line. This doubles the strength of braided line and allows me to target big Amberjacks using lighter line.  Using an Improved Bristol Knot, I connect top shot of Fluorocarbon to the braid double line. Connect your fluorocarbon leader to the solid ring on the jig using whatever knot you feel comfortable with. As I said in previous podcasts I do not offer terminal end knot recommendations. Tie the jig to solid steel ring using any knot you feel comfortable with. Also sharpen over the counter manufacture assist hooks before use.  Always and I mean always test your knot, especially if you are targeting large fish. Sometimes you get a bad spool of fluorocarbon or you hit a bad spot on the braid.  Testing knots will catch this. I always and I mean always test my knots no matter how much confidence I have in them.  I always double check my work and the manufactures work. It has saved the day more than once. I guess old habits are hard to break.  Vertical Jigging can provide non-stop action. When I arrive at a vertical jig spot, I like to take some time to figure out the drift. Prior to starting the day. I review my past drift tracks on the the fishing spots by using historical track logs saved by date in my Atlas Track database. This saves me a lot of time. I check the wind direction in the morning then review a couple possible drift patterns based on what I “think” the current maybe doing.  I have to be mentally prepared and having historical drift patterns based on wind and current direction saves me a lot time. I know now which spots are worth fishing and which spots I should avoid based on historical data. Once I  determine which way our drift will carry us across the spot, I calculate our drift speed. After calculating the drift, we start 100 yards ahead of the fishing spot we plan on jigging.  Once I hit a point of reference on the GPS that I marked (as a drop point).  I then let the angler drop vertical jig. Now with the Seakeeper, I turn the boat broadside so two anglers can safely jig. One guy can safely jig off the bow and one guy can jig off the back near the helm.  Dialing In For bottom dwelling fish such as snappers and groupers. The angler will let the jig stay on the bottom for a few seconds, bounce it off the bottom 3-4 times that will give the fish a chance to investigate and at times the fish will pick it up and eat the jig. Think like a spear diver when it comes to jigging the bottom around wrecks. Spear divers brush the bottom of the ocean surface with their hands generating clouds of sediment and religiously use underwater lights and flashers to attract fish such as grouper, wahoo, snapper and cobia into their kill zone.  The jig bouncing off the seafloor creates vibratory sounds and “clouds” of sediment/sand.  This action draws the attention of big fish from hundreds of yards of way.If the angler does not draw a strike he will then lift the jig 5-10 ft. and repeat the process. If the bottom dwelling fish do not cooperate, the angler starts working the jig higher up into the water column. Lifting the jig 30-50 ft. then dropping it back down. Big Amberjacks roam this area. If the angler does not hook up he must either increase or decrease the jigging speed. Vertical Jigging can be extremely exciting, but it is takes a lot of work and practice to get the technique correct. The angler must be in good shape when it comes to vertical jigging as it requires a lot of stamina and cardio. Once you feel a fish strike a jig from 300ft down, I can almost guarantee that no matter how tired you are, you will be running on pure fishing Adrenaline! You also have to get a rhythm down…let the reel do the work. The Shimano Twin Power does the trick for me. It is expensive but man can that thing jig up the Tunas with little work.  It is ultra light weight and do not tire out.  Fish Get Picky..Truth I am going to use the Amberjack as an example. Amberjacks do not eat just anything and are not always hungry!  The Amberjack will shut down and not eat due to fishing pressure so you have to use your brain to get them to eat. I have done several side by side tests over a two year period when I owned Jimyjigs USA and found the Amberjacks to be one “cranky” fish.  Anyone can catch them when they are biting, but when they are not biting that is when I challenge you to go to the next level and figure it out. A commercial Amberjack fisherman will tell you the same thing, they get “cranky” at times and you gotta work for them.  Yes, I believe color does matter with Amberjacks and vertical jigs. My secret jig is a chartreuse jig with a blue eye, The Blue around the eye is secret technique used by commercial Amberjack fisherman in Mexico. When fishing the Islamorada Hump, the fish tend to really key in on smaller jigs that highly reflective in silver color, on dark days the jigs that have super glow out fish the ones that do not. Purple, Blues, Silver, Golds and Chartreuse jigs tend to work very well on the Islamorada Hump.  Some days color just does not matter, nor the type of jig you use.  I have my best luck with Tunas using a silver colored 80-100 g jigs on days when the current is light. On days when it is ripping I have to beef up the jig size to 150 g-225 g jigs and even carry an ample supply of 300gram jigs.   Look around you especially when you are fishing the Islamorada Hump and check out what the Tunas are eating. You can see the bait fish in the water on most days. Try to match the Hatch.  Bait Strip Secret-Add Some Flair to the Your Vertical Jig Something new that I have not talked about yet or shared with anyone until now is my secret to catching Blackfins on the hump using Bait Strips. I attach a holographic bait strip to the vertical  jig hook and then I tie small cable tie on the hook to keep it in place so it does not tear off the hook.  As the jig falls this silver holographic artificial jig strips gets crush! Like I said earlier Tunas on the humps, especially if the fleet of boat is tossing out pilchards for live chum, get turned on to silver/white a silver and light color. In the sunlight this silver color down deep catches light reflection… not to mention the action of the bait strip attached to the jig is crazy! You have to purchase a pack of bait strips and try this out this winter. Its awesome!  Check out the photo my favorite vertical jig rigged with bait strip in my show notes.   Fluorocarbon Leaders Matters when it Comes to Vertical Jigging I always and I means always use Fluorocarbon for the abrasion resistance and the stealth. Fishing is mental, I have confidence in every jig I put down with a Fluorocarbon Leader.  Use 30 lb.-40 lb. for Black Fin Tuna and Mutton Snappers Use 80 lb. -100 lb. for Amberjack and Big Groupers.  Just telling you like it is even if you don’t like it. Thanks for listening now got get yourself some vertical jigs.  The best vertical jigging spot in South Florida is the Islamorada Hump.

These are just a few of the highlights of this interview with veteran spearo Tom Blandford. As mentioned in the intro, I purchased (and read) Tom's first book which has stories about his life serving in the LAPD during the 70's and 80's. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think its a nice compliment to this interview which focuses on his spearfishing life. Listen in:) Full shownotes and pictures available at A bit about Tom Blandford "He's been diving forever -- he decided to go to a local junior college back in the 60s because that would allow him to dive more than some of his other options. He was a founding member of the LAPD dive unit. He's been a member of the Long Beach Neptunes since the early 80s (if not earlier). He made a bunch of trips to Baja in the 80s and 90s -- actually spent several months once living out of a tent and a van on one of those trips, diving every day. More recently, he's taken to cruising in the Sea of Cortez and has dived/spearfished in tons of different spots. Aside from all that, he's mentioned in Terry Maas's book in the story about the white shark incident in 1984 at Guadalupe Island -- that's the one where Harry Ingram was launched out of the water by a white shark. As luck would have it, my dad had a front row seat and helped get Harry out of the water. He also has his own white shark story from 1988 where he actually shot a white shark at point blank range! He's an old salt now (74 in November), but he still dives quite a bit." - Ron Blandford Interview Time Stamps 4:00 Tom's beginnings.
