Hunting represents more than just the kill for most all of us. It is time in the outdoors, memories with loved ones, a chance to decompress and relax in the great outdoors. However additional stressors of life can often allow us to lose touch with what hunting truly signifies for each of us. Returning guest, Mike Behrens joins us this week with more than just a "season recap". Mike had a very challenging 2024 personally, and found himself hunting out of pure obligation to put meat in the freezer, losing perspective of why he really enjoyed it. This lead to some major lifestyle changes for Mike last year in an effort to build a healthier body and mind. Mike shares with us his journey from last year, in addition to an update on his backyard whitetails. We hope Mike's lifestyle changes can be inspirational to someone else out there who may be feeling dragged down and losing interest in things previously enjoyed. Tune in. Mike Cauley has been breeding and hunting with bulldogs his entire life. For more than forty years Mike has been using American Pit Bull Terriers as the clean up crew for his hog hunting adventures.Chris and Mike discuss the history of bulldogs from the farm, working free range livestock, to the marsh, catching wild hogs. They talk about game bred pits, hunting stock, socialization and training. Mike discusses the prime age to introduce bulldogs to training and hunting, how to handle bulldogs at an early age and throughout its entire life. Finally, Mike gives us a peak into the sentimental value he places on his bulldogs and this is not to be underrated. The American Pit Bull Terrier is by far the most controversial breed of dog in the history of mankind. Their traditional uses have been outlawed in most countries but their practicality still lives with hunters that need this warrior class canine to catch and anchor dangerous game. Mike Cauley is an experienced dog man with decades of experience in dog training and hunting.Release Date: 04-04-22 ►Get Your Houndsman XP Info, Gear & More Here!www.HoundsmanXP.com►Become a Patron of Houndsman XP! In this episode of the Houndsman XP podcast, the boys renew a longtime friendship with Louisiana's Mike Cauley, best known for the successful exploits of his Bayou Cajun Plott Hound pack on wild hogs and on bears, both the blacks of the Northwoods of the US and Canada and the giant browns of Sweden.Cauley primarily hunts hogs in the swamps and bayous of southeastern Louisiana where he has caught hundreds of the species over the years. He has also made three trips to Sweden to hunt the country's huge brown bears after shipping several Plott Hounds to hunters there. One of the bears taken with Cauley-bred Plotts ranks fourth among Sweden's largest trophy bears. Cauley's experiences hunting brown bears in Sweden are thoroughly examined.Discussions move to questions about why he chose hogs as his game of choice and why he chose the Plott breed over other breeds of hounds. An in-depth discussion evolves concerning the bulldog's role in hunting hogs, what makes a good catch dog and how hounds and bulldogs are trained to work together. Cauley's favorite bloodlines of bulldogs and curs used for catching dangerous wild boars are also explored. Our hosts implore Cauley to describe the typical Deep South hog hunt with dogs, the type of territory he hunts and the type of equipment he uses on the hunt. Cauley also discusses the advantages and the pitfalls of using the same dogs on hogs and bears. Realizing many of the hogs Cauley catches are taken alive, additional questions emerge about how hogs are caught and what are the risks to hunter and hound. An exciting story of Trapper and the junkyard hog helps to make this inaugural episode on hog hunting one that listeners will surely enjoy.Release Date: 10-20-19 ►Get Your Houndsman XP Info, Gear & More Here!www.HoundsmanXP.com►Become a Patron of Houndsman XP! Jesse Johnson is one of the greatest woodsmen we know! Local to north Texas, Jesse has blazed trails into public land hunting for whitetail and hogs with two favored weapons of choice; a traditional bow and an old-school Flintlock Muzzleloader. Jesse returns as a guest on the podcast to share with us once again his passion for public land and traditional bow hunting. We talk trad archery, bow and arrow builds, and the grind of hunting public with a stick and string. Jesse also shares with us two of his most recent memorable non-resident hunts for Colorado elk with a muzzleloader and Canadian black bear with a trad bow. Jesse's passion for the outdoors is contagious, and over the years has peaked many of our own interests in picking up an old-school stick and string and getting after it! One thing's for sure, Jesse has developed a set of skills that set him apart, no matter if he's rocking the long bow or the ol' smoke pole! We typically steer clear of politics on our podcast. However we do believe there is a time and place for such "political" discussions when it comes to our rights as hunters and outdoors men and women; specific to over-regulating, voter-based bans and a disregard for conservation and management research and statistics by States and Commissions. We believe game regulations have their place as long as long as ethics, conservation and education have been appropriately considered and applied. In today's world, that line continues to become blurred more and more by Fish and Game departments caving to uneducated agendas and voter-based decisions. This week, we unpack all of this with guest Mike Behrens; specifically looking at recent events including the ban of wild hog hunting in Kentucky, the very first mountain lion trapping ban in Texas, wolf and mountain lion events in Colorado, and more! Some may call this conversation "controversial", but we believe it is every hunter's responsibility to weigh in on the decisions made by their own Fish and Game Commissions, and to pay attention to other State's around them. Every year is a learning opportunity, and season number 2 as an adult onset whitetail hunter was no exception for our friend Mike Behrens. Mike returns to the show to dive deep into his 2023 deer season with our show host, Sam. They talk about the good, the bad and the ugly of it all. Mike shares how his high exceptions were quickly put in check with a difficult mid-October kill, followed by weeks of struggles. It's not all bad, as Mike got to close out his year on a stud of a Texas whitetail, and also experienced his first true case of "buck fever". This is a great discussion between two passionate blue-collar hunters, covering a variety of topics including the journey we all experience growing as hunters and archers. The 2023 hunting seasons held a lot of firsts for members of our team, and for our show host Sam Thrash. This episode brings us back to Texas deer camp where Sam sits down with his dad, Mark to bring their season to a close. They discuss the frustrations experienced this year on Texas Dirt, lessons learned from it, and how they look to improve upon such in year 4. We always have to end it with a bang, as the title of the episode eludes. Mark shares a story that you absolutely cannot make up, having had his truck STOLEN right from the property while he was hunting! And if that isn't crazy enough on its own, Mark's 200+ pound boar was in the bed of the truck. What is it about hunting Texas that is so captivating? Why is having a deer lease with deer feeders highly sought after in the Lone Star State? These are the things Johnny Mack from Soul Seekers is now having to learn and understand for himself. Johnny, coming from the Pacific Northwest, has never hunted outside of the well-known "western style" of pursuit. A move to Texas a couple years ago has now forced him to adapt to a whole new playbook when it comes to pursuing wild game. Johnny joins us to talk about this transition, having to learn how to hunt whitetail Texas style, his struggles along the way and his constant drive to learn everything he can to bring success to his hunts and meet to his table. If you are new to hunting down south, or you want to better understand why we do what we do in Texas, then this is a great listen! Join us and Johnny Mack as we all educate and learn together! For more hunting & outdoor content, visit https://www.fallobsession.comFall Obsession Podcast is driven by our friends at Ridge Rock Hunt Company (https://ridgerockhuntcompany.com)

Whole hog bbq is popular but not my favorite. The first hunt I ever went on was a hog hunt in Georgia and I think about that hunt every time there is a whole hog on a smoker. What is a good camo pattern? Is there such a thing as a bad one? "The Theory of Camouflage" sums up the general topic we're seeking to break down in this week's episode. Joined once again by special guest and military veteran Mike Behrens, podcast host Sam leads detailed conversation over the very important, yet sometimes overlooked topic of concealment and stealth. The two talk about general camo patterns and the importance of shade, color and shape over leaf, grass and tree. They talk about the evolution of patterns in both the hunting industry and the military, and many areas where the two overlap. The conversation naturally holds some entertaining stories from the deer woods, including a look back to Sam's biggest buck to date from 10 years ago when he was wearing blue jeans, a sweatshirt, and simply sitting on a ridge! For more hunting & outdoor content, visit https://www.fallobsession.comFall Obsession Podcast is driven by our friends at Ridge Rock Hunt Company (https://ridgerockhuntcompany.com)

On this episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is joined by two of his best friends, Randy and Kelly. Randy is one of John's childhood friends, and if you listen to the show, you have heard John reference Randy's deer lease in West Texas several times. Kelly and John met in college, and now the three have become hunting buddies and share a camp multiple times a year. This week, the boys aren't talking whitetails though. Randy and Kelly loaded up some toys and brought them to John's family ranch to do a little night time coyote hunting. Randy has been into coyote hunting for a long time, and for several years spent way more time in varmint tournaments than a deer stand. Over the years he has accumulated some high quality night time hunting gear, and this podcast is mostly centered around that gear with some hunting techniques thrown in along the way. The guys talk thermal vs night vision and some of the benefits and downfalls of each. Why an electric ATV may be the way to go, and the advantages of having a raised hunting rack in the back of it. The three talk about some of the differences in calling coyotes with thermal versus walking up on hogs, and how to do each one safely. If you have been thinking about going on a thermal hunt, or maybe buying a thermal of your own, this episode is a great resource before you go spending a whole lot of money. Skip may have cut his teeth in the South, but the lions of Montana are his new found passion. Starting off as a youngster, Skip knew that he had a love for working dogs. Over the years as he grew so did his passion and experience in the dog woods. We have talked a lot in past episodes about the different requirements, and sometimes totally different dogs required to pursue a given species, but this is a great conversation with long time Houndsman that has ran everything from deer to hog, bear, lions and about everything in between. Pull up a seat and join us for some off the cuff "raw talk". If you want to check out the podcast episode that Skip and Jason mention with Aaron Kelly, make sure to check out "Whats Wrong When Everything Is Going Right?"https://podcast.dusupply.com/episodes/ep-182-whats-wrong-when-everything-is-going-right https://link.chtbl.com/5lrb67Ew
