We never intended to buy a house in FL, but this month we ended up with a new home for the motorhome at our RV resort in Titusville, FL. We explain the decision and details in this month's episode as move ahead on buying this new abode in FL. The sale is not final until mid-May, so we headed North to Chicago just in time to leave on our next adventure, a cruise in Tahiti and Hawaii. The weather being what it is, the MH needed to be winterized while it sits in the cold in Chicago., We'll not be taking it to its new home until November (2025) due to our upcoming Alaska adventure which starts in July.

Welcome to the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast, where we share inspiring stories, practical tips, and the unpredictable nature of life on the water. In this episode, hosted by Bela Musits and co-hosted by Mike Wasserman, we dive into the adventurous journey of Mike Malekoff as he recounts his trip from Georgia to the Florida Keys. This podcast captures the essence of his experience, highlighting the importance of flexibility, planning, and embracing the unexpected.### The Journey Begins: From Vermont to the Florida KeysMike Malekoff's journey started long before he set sail for the Florida Keys. After sailing from Vermont to the Bahamas and eventually settling in Georgia, Mike planned a celebratory trip to the Keys following his recovery from prostate cancer. The trip was meticulously scheduled for early January, with reservations in the Keys for February and a planned return to Georgia afterward.### The Challenges of Scheduling and WeatherOne of the biggest takeaways from Mike's experience is the challenge of adhering to schedules while cruising on a sailboat. Despite careful planning, the unpredictable nature of weather and other unforeseen circumstances can significantly impact the journey. Mike's trip, which began on January 10th, was planned to be a 10-day voyage with a 10-day buffer. However, cold weather, snow in Georgia and Florida, and strong winds delayed their departure and reduced their buffer days.### Navigating the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW)To avoid rough seas, Mike and his crew traveled the ICW to St. Augustine, which took longer than expected. They encountered a supermoon that affected tides and caused shallow areas, leading to additional stops to avoid grounding. The journey continued to New Smyrna, where they faced a leaking head and had to manage with their second head.### Mechanical Issues and Weather DelaysMechanical issues further complicated the trip. In Titusville, a water connection snapped off, leaving them without a working bathroom. Finding parts for a 2005 boat proved difficult, and they spent days waiting for replacements, which eliminated their buffer time. Bad weather and northerly winds affecting offshore currents forced them to wait for calmer seas.### The Decision to ReturnRealizing that crossing to the Keys would be difficult and facing expensive marina reservations, Mike decided to cancel the trip and return to Georgia. The journey back was not without its challenges, including sea fog and rough seas, but they navigated safely using a chart plotter and compass.### Lessons Learned: Flexibility and AttitudeMike's trip, described as an adventure rather than a vacation, underscores the importance of flexibility and a positive attitude in sailing. Despite the hurdles, there were enjoyable moments, such as watching a rocket launch in Titusville and surfing alongside dolphins. The experience highlighted the need for backup plans, the challenges of securing marina reservations, and the unpredictability of buffer days.### Embracing the JourneyThe podcast emphasizes that the journey itself is the reward, and focusing solely on the destination can turn an adventure into an ordeal. Experienced sailors understand the challenges and setbacks, while new sailors should be prepared for the unexpected. The importance of planning with flexibility, carrying spare parts, and enjoying the journey cannot be overstated.Thank you for joining us on this episode of Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States. We hope you found Mike's story inspiring and informative. If you have any questions or would like to share your own sailing experiences, please email us at sailingtheeast@gmail.com. Don't forget to share the podcast and stay tuned for more exciting episodes as we prepare for spring boating.Happy sailing!Bela and Mike

Lots of RV activity for us this month. As with many of you, we had to hunker down early in the month due to extensive cold and snow in many parts of the country - including FL. Titusville was spared frozen precipitation, but it was cold. Our nearly annual trip to the Tampa RV Super show was a management disaster, but a display success. We explain this in full on the podcast. We managed to buy a few things at the vendor area, including a new Starlink Gen3 antenna (is it a dish, antenna or table?). I waited 3 days for it to be delivered from Starlink. Set-up was very easy and I had it working within minutes. We customized the installation as we explain in the episode. Beyond this we headed to Sebring FL for a refurbishment of 2 of our fogged windows. The end of the month brought us to Jetty park to watch others cruise from Port Canaveral. This campground has a great view of the ships entering and leaving on the weekly cruises to all parts of the caribbean.

Space Perspective, a Titusville, Florida company founded in 2018, was developed with the objective of selling trips to the stratosphere. And in a world of heavy investment in space exploration, it's the method that's unique: Space Perspective plans to use a craft called “Spaceship Neptune,” described as a crewed, pressurized gondola propelled by hydrogen. In the second half of 2024, the firm appeared to be on a positive trajectory. In September, the company completed its first uncrewed test. Funding from British billionaire and space enthusiast Richard Branson was revealed in October – as well as the fact that he would co-pilot the first crewed mission in 2025.
Resilience and Recon: The Inspiring Journey of Davey Lind In this week's Team Never Quit episode, Marcus and Melanie meet with Master Sergeant Davey Lind, a United States Marine, combat veteran, and motivational leadership speaker whose life story is a testament to resilience, courage, and the power of perseverance. Born and raised in Titusville, Pennsylvania, Davey embarked on his military journey immediately after high school, joining the Marine Corps in 1989. Over the years, he honed his skills and leadership as a Recon Marine, serving in pivotal roles from scout to team leader and participating in key operations, including Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the Iraq War. On June 14, 2007, Davey's life changed forever when a pressure plate IED in Iraq led to the loss of his legs below the knees. Incredibly, he took his first steps just two months after the injury and has continued to inspire others with his unyielding spirit and dedication to recovery and service. Today, Davey is a sought-after motivational speaker, sharing lessons learned from the battlefield and life, focusing on leadership, adaptability, and grit. He resides in Corona, California, with his wife Lisa and their four children, where he continues to make a difference in the private sector with his involvement with PXG Golf. It became a great outlet for him and something to look forward to. He is actively involved in helping veterans heal in the context of golf outings and they have made more friends and memories from various golf adventures. Join us as we dive into Davey's incredible journey, from the challenges of combat to overcoming life-altering injuries and emerging as a beacon of strength and inspiration. In This Episode You Will Hear: • 35 in the Marine Corps, that's old. (14:04) • We were part of a surge in the summer of '07, and my vehicle struck and activated a pressure plate IED. This IED went off directly underneath me, and from that blast I became a double leg amputee. (15:02) • I rolled over on my back to try to use my left leg to push, and when I tried to do that, that's when I realized my left leg was gone. (24:50) • I'm married, I have kids, I have goals, and I was immediately aware of how challenging my life was gonna be. (25:17) • As a platoon sergeant, I was armed with both a rifle and pistol. That pistol was on my hip, and I had the conscious thought to end my life right there. I could do it before they could finish working on me. (25:33) • I had a very clear moment of calming, reflection of “everybody did their best.” I'm just gonna die here on the battlefield. (26:54) • My initial assessment was “You're gonna walk in about 10 months to a year. (33:32) • Being in a wheelchair, even as a gunny, is like the kids table at Thanksgiving. Nobody's talking to you; they're talking about you. (35:08) • There's a great relationship you have to have with your prosthetic doctor. The fit has to be tight, but not too tight. Then there's alignment. There's a lot that goes into it. (37:39) • Guys like me – a double leg amputee, I call guys that are single leg below the knee – we refer to that as a paper cut. (38:48) • Perspective is everything. (39:35) • I was able to retire though, which is important because I did a full 20 years, 6 months, and 3 days of active duty time. (46:15) • In 2018 I got one of the greatest phone calls I've ever received. Kevin Hudson from PXG called me and said, “We got a program going on - PXG Heroes. If I help you with this program, do you think you could golf a little bit more, and talk about the program, and introduce people to PXG. Would you be willing to do that? (48:19) • Golf is the only thing you can do competitively for the rest of your life. (62:45) • [Marcus] In the beginning you wonder why you got hit. You got hit so you can show people what it's like and stay up. Finally back on the road in the RV, we travel to FL on a round about itinerary that included stops in Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina and Georgia before our final stop in Titusville, FL. September is a great weather month in these northerly states so we took advantage of fall (before the colors) to slowly drive south. A major stop along the way was in Gaffney. Not a tourist stop but an important MH stop for this is the home of Freightliner - the maker of our chassis. We found the important of letting the pros work on the MH as they performed our annual check-up and found several major problems - and solved them before they became issues. Expensive, yes, but worth it if it keeps from being stranded on the side of the road. We are getting ready for our Alaska adventure next summer so reliability of our Rig is very much on our mind. With a 12 year old MH, we never know what will go wrong, so we try to do as much preventative maintenance as possible. Florida proved to be its usual hot an humid with a hurricane thrown in for good measure. Our area was not impacted by the storm so we are feeling lucky this year. This months episode features a new cooking segment done by the copilot. She shares some ideas for maximizing the kitchen space in an RV.

Before interviewing Bryan, Rich and Jason honor the memory of Karan Conklin from the Space Walk of Fame Museum in Titusville, Florida. They also discuss the newly released Netflix Apollo 13 documentary and Rich's recent interview about coins flown in space. After that comes super space memorabilia collector Bryan Edwards from Minnesota. Bryan discusses his unique path into space collecting. Learn about his father rubbing elbows with NASA personnel in Houston and how growing up in Houston fueled his passion for collecting space memorabilia. They then discuss everything from autographs to flown heat-shield lucites. Downsizing a bit, Bryan is moving to North Carolina shortly and -- teaser! -- there won't be a garage sale. You will, however, hear some fun stories from the hey-day of the autograph shows, including a unique interaction with the Last Man to Walk on the Moon, Gene Cernan.

This week's "Staycation Destinations" feature took you on a radio tour of Edwin Drake's Well #1. It essentially became the birthplace of the modern petroleum industry. The Drake Well Museum and Park, with its indoor and outdoor exhibits, tells of this history. In this additional interview segment, Emily Weaver of the Friends of Drake Well Incorporated makes about 20 miles further south of Titusville, to another historic site in the Oil Creek Region. In the 1860s, Pithole City sprung up and grew to a population of 15,000 as people flooded in there, in an oil-focused version of a gold rush. Weaver tells us more of that story, and describes what people can see at the Pithole visitors center (open seasonally on weekend). It's "Staycation Destinations" on Family Life The last week of August marks the anniversary of a milestone that transformed northwest Pennsylvania -- and transformed the world. It was 1859, when "Colonel" Edwin Drake struck oil at his new well south of Titusville. As he and his team developed the infrastructure to drill, store and transport oil, the petroleum industry mushroomed. So did "oil boom" towns throughout the region. The Drake Well Museum & Park is at the site of that first well. It tells the story of this discovery which directly led to huge changes in the local economy, the world of transportation and so much more. Executive Director Emily Weaver tells us about this history and about what modern-day visitors to the site can see at the Drake Well. Visitor information about the museum and grounds are available at www.DrakeWell.org. There you can find for about the exhibits, history and upcoming events. We also have separate podcast-only bonus content, as Emily Weaver gives us a radio tour of a town which went from almost nothing to a population of 15,000 --- back to almost nothing. The Friends of Drake Well historical organization has a twin attraction about 20 miles further south: Pithole City. This extended interview has that story, and information about what visitors can see there too. The biggest annual event there happens in mid-Autumn, the Pithole Lantern Tour. Listen, download, or share this bonus content here.

When the wind is just right, on a small beach in Titusville, Florida, horseshoe crabs crawl out of the water and onto the beach to lay their eggs. Jim and Colin joined up with two marine biologists—Bob Sluka who works with A Rocha, a Christian conservation organization and Margaret Miller, a coral biologist who works with SECORE International—and three A Rocha interns to survey the horseshoe crabs. That experience began an exploration into paying attention to many of the creatures that surround us, extending hospitality, and learning from the creatures, even from the ocean itself, about how we might better worship the creator of it all. We're giving up on new ways to describe how busy it is now in the world of space-related news. Nonetheless, we still have a Starship Flight 3 recap, a look at the next (and last) Delta IV Heavy launch, and we also focus on the upcoming total solar eclipse. But first, in the News Roundup, even more, including: Crew 7 returns from the ISS; RocketLab's Electron booster launches the “Owl Night Long” mission for Japan-based Synspective; Japan-based Space One launch vehicle explodes during first launch; SpaceX's controversial land-swap deal in Texas; The White House releases NASA 2025 budget on the heels of the final fiscal year 2024 spending bill for NASA, NOAA and FAA; NASA network of small moon rovers gets ready for work on IM-2 mission; The Post-Delta-IV-Heavy Future of Launch Complex 37 Next, the team discusses some possible alternatives for the future of Space Launch Complex 37 on Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. The USAF conducted a public hearing (both in-person and online, which Gene attended) to discuss the two options. One is for SpaceX to take over LC-37 and convert it for use by the Starship Super Heavy. The other is to establish a new LC-50, to be located between SpaceX's LC-40 and ULA's LC-41. Charles Boyer from “Talk of Titusville” outlines the entire plan here. How to Safely Enjoy the Upcoming Solar Eclipse Gene shares his previous solar eclipse viewing experiences and provides a few handy safety tips as well. According to the site TimeandDate , the first sign of a partial eclipse in North America is to start at 15:42 UTC (that's 11:42 AM EDT) on April 8, 2024, and will end about 20:52 UTC or 4:52 PM EDT. NASA has a good site as well if you are looking for when to look in your area, NASA's Eclipse Explorer can give you information about your town to see if you are in the path of totality. So can a moving map animation at greatamericaneclipse.com. And if you get rained out or clouded over? Never fear, NASA TV will be providing coverage. Starship Flight 3 Recap Finally, the team recaps their impressions of the third test flight of Starship Super Heavy. While both booster and ship were prematurely lost (which, by regulation, requires that SpaceX conduct another Mishap Investigation), there were a number of notable achievements to highlight on this test flight. There were a number of lowlights as well. We discuss it all. Please be sure to let us know your thoughts on the topics we discuss. You can always reach us at mailbag@TalkingSpaceOnline.com. It's the spring of 1858. Colonel Edwin Drake from New York is hired by the Seneca Oil Company to investigate suspected oil deposits in Titusville, Pennsylvania. While the existence of petroleum oil was known, there no considerable market for the material. After months of work, Drake had little to show for his efforts. Undeterred, Drake took out a $500 loan to continue his operation. Then, on August 27th 1859, Drake changed the world. While drilling on an island in Oil Creek at a depth of 69.5 feet, he had struck oil.The words - “They've struck oil!” – roared through the valley as crowds gathered to see the crude oil being hand pumped to the surface and into a bathtub. The Drake Well was the first commercial oil well in the United States. It led to the world's first oil boomThis monumental discovery would play a pivotal role in the birth of the American oil industry. The rural wooded area surrounding Oil Creek would go on to be used for searching for black gold that would fuel the industrial revolution.160-plus years after the discovery of oil, the property is now known as Oil Creek State Park. The park is a living museum, preserving the remnants of historic oil derricks, drill sites, and the remains of the industry that forever altered the course of American history. On this episode I speak with David Hallman. David is the Park Manager of Oil Creek State Park. In June 2021, firearms maker Dark Storm Industries announced plans to relocate manufacturing from New York to Titusville, Florida. The company intended to build a new 25,000-square-foot headquarters and manufacturing plant in the Sunshine State, foreseeing a capital investment of approximately $3.2 million and 87 new jobs. However, Florida Today has reported that the company, which caters specifically to the AR platform modern sporting rifles, elected not to build a new facility and, as a result, will lose over $1 million in financial incentives. The report cited a 300% increase in the facility's construction costs and a “dramatic” rise in financing costs since the project's initiation, according to Dark Storm managing partner Edward Newman. In a letter to a local government economic program, Newman explained that these factors rendered the project “no longer economically viable.”Dark Storm planned to build the new plant on 9.8 acres that the company bought for $362,600 in 2021 at Spaceport Commerce Park. Dark Storm expected the facility to house manufacturing, warehousing and shipping operations and create 50 direct jobs with an average salary of $50,000. However, following higher construction costs, permit delays and increased interest rates on commercial loans, Dark Storm decided not to construct the new facility. Instead, the company opted to lease manufacturing space on nearby Merritt Island. The company will use the space until it finds a “suitable existing facility.”The county commission voted to repurchase the undeveloped area from Dark Storm for the original price and will now offer the land to other tenants. While Dark Storm got the money back spent on the land, it will still have to forfeit $1.08 million in economic incentives. The company will also lose a 10-year deal for a 100% break on county property taxes and a seven-year deal for a 70% break on city property taxes.Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.
We don't normally think of Philadelphia as being an oil town, but the Point Breeze refinery in South Philadelphia, easily visible from the Pratt Bridge on your ride to the airport, dominated the skyline for many decades with its storage tanks and distilling towers. Born in the middle of Pennsylvania's Titusville oil boom in the northwest corner of the state, J. Newton Pew established Sun Oil in 1890. After its move to Philadelphia, Newton's sons Howard and Joe Jr. ran the company for decades and established a refinery at Marcus Hook and the Sun Shipbuilding Company in Chester. The Pews are known today for their charitable contributions throughout the city. The Pew Mausoleum at Laurel Hill West holds several generations of this prosperous philanthropic family. Learn about oil, crude and refined, shipbuilding, philanthropy, and even some political intrigue in this month's episode of “All Bones Considered: Laurel Hill Stories – Philadelphia and Oil” from wherever you listen to podcasts.
Vinnie Nguyen and his wife, Phi Phi Lam, started their food truck, Pho Wheels, so that they could have more time to spend with their children. “The hours and restaurants are just really long,” Nguyen said. “You go in — opening, you've done everything — by the time you go home, it's almost midnight as well. I miss a lot of time with my children. I was a stay-at-home dad at the beginning when they were born for like five and a half years and when going back to the workforce, it just felt like I was missing a part of myself.” Nguyen has spent much of his life around restaurants. His family has been in the restaurant business and he has worked in a number of kitchens around Orlando, such as Umi Japanese Fusion in Winter Park and Hana Sushi in Altamonte Springs. “I just love how food makes people feel and any kind of a field that you're in it's really hard to try to please a lot of people,” he said. “But if you get the correct ingredients, the correct food, it makes people happy and that's our kind of occupation.” However, after spending time as a stay-at-home dad, Nguyen decided it was best to be his own boss. “If we don't make enough money, we'll just spend less money. So that's that's our scenario,” Nguyen said. “We're not as successful as some restaurants are but we do get to spend the most amount of time with our kids. We try to work during the time when they're at school so that when they come home, they don't even know that we left for work.” Even though Pho Wheels gives the couple the freedom to spend plenty of time with their children, it does still keep them busy. “We've been all the way to Winter Garden. We've been to Tampa, we serve a lot over in Titusville, in the Space Coast area, but most of the time we are headquartered in Winter Park and we serve a lot of the outer Orlando area — downtown a lot,” Nguyen said. Getting ready for each event also has the couple working long hours. “The prep time is a lot. We do wake up early, and we do stay up late, but those are the schedules that we picked so that we can have the time with our child. It is a lot different from a brick-and-mortar where you have enough water, enough electricity — so it does take a lot of adjustment,” Nguyen said. The couple serves a variety of Asian street food including Vietnamese dishes like pho, Korean fried chicken and even some sushi. So we just love that we're able to accommodate a lot of the Asian culture and a lot of different food for all our events,” Nguyen said. On the latest episode of Florida Foodie, Nguyen and his wife talk about what it is like to work together in their food truck. They also show off some of their favorite dishes. Whale Oil: The Original Energy Transition with Eric Jay Dolin In 1859, illumination throughout the major metropolises of the West was powered by whale oil. Whale oil was at the center of international trade (and trade disputes). Prices were at an all time high and great fortunes had been made. Yet, in that same year, Edwin Drake started the oil rush in Titusville, Pennsylvania…and every thing changed. Quickly. What lessons are there in this first energy transition in the modern era? In this episode we dig into the history of whaling and whale oil. Our guest is historian Eric Jay Dolan, author of Leviathan: A history of whaling in America. Eric takes us through the history of whale oil. A history of the first commodity cartels (they failed too), extraordinary entrepreneurs, boom and bust, environmental exploitation and Benjamin Franklin's taste for Spermaceti Candles.
