It's the evening after I finish the Camino. I'm in Muxia, a lovely little seaside village. The waves are crashing and I am feeling very car sick, after being on a moving vehicle for the first time in weeks. In my albergue is the amazing force of nature and Camino expert that is Anke. Listen to her infectious personality and story on the episode. She has also kindly offered to answer any questions anyone may have about hiking the Camino routes, and she knows everything there is to know! Feel free to DM her here. Look out for Ronni, support the podcast, order the book, and sponsor a virtual coffee here. We also have a new soundtrack, from the absolutely amazing band Bukahara and their fabulous, on point song 'Storytelling Animal'. Thank you to the band and their management for permission to use the song, and do check out their work. 'The Camino is Storytelling' is the second season of 'The World is Storytelling' podcast, recorded while hiking on the Caminos Primitivo & Finisterre, from Oviedo in Asturias to Cabo Finisterre in Galicia. Thank you to all those who helped along the way. From those who recorded with me, walked with me, gave me the space to walk alone, and supported the idea. Special thanks goes to Altberg for the amazing boots, that once again gave me no blisters. The World is Storytelling podcast is based on the book by the same name. Written by Arjen Barel, Ronni Gurwicz, and Stu Packer, it is the definitive guide to how sharing stories can be used for social impact and personal growth.

YOU on the Camino de Santiago
Ep 16: How Much Does it Cost to Walk the Camino . . . OR How Much do you Want to Spend?

YOU on the Camino de Santiago

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 15, 2022 43:08

How much does it cost to walk the Camino? How does the amount you spend for your pilgrimage influence, or even determine the experience you will have on the Camino? Or from another perspective, think of the experience you want: how much will that cost? The costs on the Camino are what they are, and in episodes 14 and 15 I shared with you what I paid for food and accommodations on the Camino Francés in 2022. That second question, though, is meant to suggest that you can spend however much – or little – you want on the Camino, in order to have the experience you want. Your on-the-ground Camino expenses are largely made up of two categories: where you sleep and where and how you eat. When people ask how much does it cost to do the Camino, I think this is usually what they are asking about, so I am going to talk about those expenses first. Then, I will look at how much your travel expenses might be, to get to the Camino and to your starting point, and then back home again. And finally, I will talk about those expenses that come before you get on the plane or train to go to the Camino, what I call preparation costs, or pre-travel expenses. There is a fair amount of detail coming your way in this episode, so you may want to have handy a pen and paper to make some notes. Also, you may want to open the webpage with the sample budgets I put together for you, so you can refer to them as we go. When you look at the sample budgets, you will notice that in order to put together your Camino budget, you will need to know a few things. For example, you will need to know how many days you expect to be on the Camino, how many days you want at you starting and ending points, and if you will continue on to Fisterra or Muxia after you reach Santiago. There are a few other things you will need to know, and I will walk you through those in this episode of the “YOU on the Camino de Santiago” podcast. The goal of the podcast has always been to share what I am learning and doing to create the life I want to inspire others to create the life they want. The Pilgrimage:A Pilgrim or Peregrino is defined as a person who journeys to a sacred place often for religious or spiritual reasons. The Camino de Santiago (or, the Way of St. James) is a pilgrimage that can be traced back to medieval times. There are several different routes, but all lead to the tomb of the Apostle Saint James, in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The most popular route and the one documented in the movie The Way starring Martin Sheen is called the Camino Frances and it starts in St. Jean Pied de Port, France, and goes up and over the Pyrenees Mountains into Spain for 500+ miles to Santiago de Compostela, in the Galician Region of Spain. The scallop shell is the official symbol of the Camino de Santiago and most pilgrims have a scallop shell attached to their backpackAlbergues are hostels where pilgrims can stay for usually less than $15 and they often provide a communal meal (and wine, of course)All pilgrims must have a 'pilgrim's passport' in order to stay in alberguesPilgrims must get their passports stamped at least once per day at albergues, coffee shops, churches, places of interest, etc in order to get a Compostela (certificate) in Santiago.Over 300,000 pilgrims arrive in Santiago each yearMy Walk:August 26, 2021Started walking from St. Jean Pied de Port, FranceSept 28, 2021Arrived in Santiago de Compostela, SpainOctober 3, 2021Arrived in Finisterre, Spain ('The End of the World')October 4, 2021Arrived in Muxia, SpainStats:Total # of Walking Days……….   39 daysTotal Number of Steps……….   1,462,154 stepsTotal Distance Walked (km)……….  1052.6 kilometersTotal Distance Walked (mi)………  654.3 milesAverage Number of Steps……….  37,491 steps per dayAverage Distance Walked (km)……….  27 km per dayAverage Distance Walked (mi)………  16.8 mi per dayBuen Camino, Mike---------------------------------------------------------------➜Episode Notes:  https://mikemurphy.co/158➜Gear & Resources I Use:: https://mikemurphy.co/resources--------------------------------------------------------------- Support the show

In 2010, at the age of 64, Claude Tranchant walked, alone, for 100 days on Saint-James' Way, commonly known in Spain as the Camino, from Vezelay, Northern Central France, to Muxia in Galicia – Spain. After her first long-distance pilgrimage, once back home, she faced the challenge known to many long-term travellers – the feeling of not fitting in. Claude yearned for more trekking. Between 2016 and 2018, in her seventies, she walked various treks, each time with a group - in Australia, in Nepal, and in Spain for the second time, The Camino Frances, with the group “Camino Skies” for a filmed documentary, as well as alone in Spain and Portugal. In this podcast we talk about walking the Camino and how getting lost, falling over and 18 days totally alone, she met her stubborn strong self. No matter the challenge, nothing was going to stop Claude achieving her dream. If you are interested in walking a Camino path or you want to be inspired by Claude's view on living without limits, you will love this podcast. Claude is a wonderful storyteller. She is quick to laugh and is full of empathy for humankind. Enjoy! Created: 04/13/2018 HELLO ALL!! This week's episode will make you laugh, cry, and possibly cringe. We deal with quite a lot while walking into Santiago, which is the "finish line" for most pilgrims while walking this trail. Karl did an unexpected night hike, which was filled with spiritually enlightened experiences, and had a hard time with missing his brother's wedding. Whitney broke down while being followed by lost kittens. Our walk into Santiago was tense and filled with unmet expectations. Whitney had a surreal moment with a butterfly that forced her to look at the journey as a whole, and not just Santiago as being the main focus and finish line of the pilgrimage. Having our entire Camino family back together again for one final hoorah of a meal was bittersweet. Please feel free to leave any feedback, or contact us if you would like. Check out our website www.trailofbeans.com or our FB page by searching @TheBeanTrail. Stay tuned for next week's episode where we complete our 43 day Camino experience in Muxia along the coast in beautiful Spain. Until then. Thanks for listening!   . . . 1000 DANK!     The Experience Seminare die Dein Leben verwandeln! http://bit.ly/2haTQdv     Deine Webinar Geschenke! http://gratis-web-seminar.de/     Intro Musik & Stimme: http://www.
