In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Lisa Morales-Hellebo. This episode is all about the will and drive of a young Latina to rebel against cultural norms and prove to herself and the world that, by playing by her own rules, she can accomplish whatever she puts her mind to. Lisa grew up as member of the only brown family in an affluent neighborhood, facing relentless racism that put a chip on her shoulder and sparked an unyielding determination. Now, Lisa is using that drive to take on refashioning the $3 trillion end-to-end industrial value chain. After turning down millions from Silicon Valley investors who didn't understand her vision, she's leading a revolution to invest in brown women and overlooked innovators. Lisa has 28 years in tech, design and systems thinking, entrepreneurship, and community building, and has recently added VC to her list of titles as Founder & Co-Managing GP at REFASHIOND Ventures: the Industrial Transformation Fund — a NY-based venture fund that invests as the first institutional check in early-stage startups refashioning industrial value chains across Data & AI, Advanced Materials, Advanced Manufacturing, and Next Generation Logistics; defensible through economic moats. Lisa has always been obsessed with how things are made and pioneered mass-customization, personalization, and on-demand micromanufacturing for P&G in Silicon Valley in 1999 at a company called Reflect.com. Lisa is catalyzing the paradigm shift to localized demand chains as CEO and Founder of REFASHIOND OS (rOS), which is deploying a unified Data Layer & Control Tower across manufacturing value chains. She is also a founder of The Worldwide Supply Chain Federation, an organization that is changing how supply chain professionals learn about, collaborate, and adopt early-stage supply chain innovation around the world. Lisa is a Carnegie Mellon University alum with University Honors, Techstars alum, founded & built the New York Fashion Tech Lab, serves on the board of 3 other accelerators, has been featured in numerous publications along with 2 books, and has been the recipient of several awards; including Supply & Demand Chain Executive Magazine's Top Woman in Supply Chain 2022, Top 100 Women in Supply Chain 2020, 2021, 2022, & 2023; and WWD's Most Influential ESG Leaders 2023.

Find out more over on the Apex Logistics website. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [06.06] How Lisa's creativity took her on an ever-evolving journey from graphic design to fashion tech, supply chain and sustainability. “My entire career has been obsessed with data, customization, personalization, on-demand – and it's led me to what I'm doing now.” [11.17] A closer look at REFASHIOND Ventures – what it does, what ‘refashioning supply chains' means and the power of supply chain digitization. [12.59] Why REFASHIOND Ventures is needed, the complex and fascinating journey that led Lisa to found it, and the many things she learned along the way. “I learned that VC's don't know anything about fashion, or retail… so I decided to found and build a fashion tech accelerator – the one that I wished had existed when I had my fashion tech company.” [24.39] Lisa reflects on some of the key challenges she's faced when it comes to industry change, mindset and sustainability – and the opportunities that have come from that. “We produce 4 times the textile waste of any other country in the world, and so we don't need to produce or grow another fiber for generations – we're sitting on mountains of waste that could be generations worth of regenerative textiles.” [35.35] Lisa's experiences as a Latina woman, in childhood as well as moving through the industry. “My entire career, my entire life, every choice I've made, has been about proving my worth.” [41.52] Lisa's words of wisdom for all of the women looking to follow in her footsteps. “You have to go through a growth process to learn that your differences are your super powers.” RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED: You can find out more about Lisa over on her website, or you can connect with her on LinkedIn, Instagram or Twitter. As the co-founder and general partner of REFASHIOND Ventures, the co-founder of The Worldwide Supply Chain Federation, and the founder of the New York Fashion Tech Lab, Lisa Morales-Hellebo's life has always been closely tied to technology. At REFASHIOND, Lisa works to help companies reframe their supply chain processes and goals to keep up with global, socio-cultural demands. Her extensive knowledge has already helped numerous companies use supply chain innovation to drive higher output and sales, and better optimize and personalize the supply chain experience for customers. This transformed Lisa’s perspective and led to her passion for positively emphasizing diversity. Today, Lisa continues to act on her passions as an advocate for organizations that help minorities gain access to opportunities for funding, championship, and growth. She also serves on multiple advisory boards, has been featured in numerous publications and media outlets, and was named of one of the top 100 women in supply chain for two years in a row by Supply Chain Digital. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast
In this episode, Carly and I had a great time getting to visit with Grammy nominated and critically acclaimed songwriter, Hayes Carll. Once again, this interview proved to be all we’d hoped for. Hayes explains that early on in his career he didn’t really think that being a well-known artist was necessarily feasible but, he did feel like he had the ability and desire that would allow him to be a successful writer of songs for other people; so first and foremost, that’s what he felt he was going to be. While living on Galveston Island, TX Hayes explains how one-night walking down an alley he heard music coming from a place called the Old Quarter Acoustic Café. This venue became Hayes’ second home and he said he just started camping out there. This lead to building relationships with the touring artists that would come through to play on weekends like Sisters Morales and Ray Wylie Hubbard. Eventually Hayes recorded his first record at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Recording Studio with Lisa Morales taking the reins as producer. As he was plugging away playing shows where he could, he had the good fortune of a Dallas radio station and its listeners falling in love with one of his songs of the first record called “Down the Road Tonight”. The radio station subsequently invited Hayes to play an event they were putting on and when Hayes played that song, he had the surreal experience of 3,000 people singing the song back to him and going nuts. This turned out to be a seminal moment in Hayes career as a performer and writer giving him the validation he needed to press on. In the latter parts of this interview we visit about Hayes relationships with other great artists and songwriters such as Corb Lund and Darrell Scott; both of whom I regard as major influences that I had the good fortune to share stages with during my days of touring. We also get to visit about Hayes’ latest record entitled “What it is”. Check out the VIDEO for a song off the record called “Times Like These” that was filmed at the Coupland Dance Hall. Carly and I both agreed we could have easily visited for another hour with Hayes and we can’t wait to have him on again in the future! Enjoy the episode!
