Karl Rahner once remarked that 'the Christian of the future will be a mystic or will not exist', and it is in this spirit that friend of the podcast Alexander John Shaia joins Dom for a conversation about recovering the mystical way of seeing today. Recorded in Granada, Spain, this episode explores how we can come to see the stories of our tradition less as historical moments, and more as timeless truths that are alive in our midst right here and now. Is there an ancient path that can transform lives when we find it together, giving hope and meaning? Alexander John Shaia returns to the podcast from his home in Spain to share his deep mining of the Gospel of John which he argues offer the most important, beautiful and dangerous words in Christianity. The story of Jesus in John proposed a radical joining of all- tribes, genders, slaves and free - coming in a new human experiment to sit side by side around the table. Alexander John aligns the work of Joseph Campbell around the Hero's Journey with the four paths of the Gospels, with John being the path that shows the way to the question, "How do I receive new vision and know the greater joy of union?" This Gospel proclaims that union is the deepest truth and that we should not be discouraged that old divisions keep returning. There is always work to do in returning to that union which is our deepest reality, and this Gospel shows us the way to restore the beautiful blueprint of harmony in diversity. Drawing from his work as a Jungian psychologist and his devotion to mystical Christianity, in this conversation Alexander John shines new light on this ancient text that transcends traditional understanding. There may be no simple answers in life, but what if there were a map? Dr Alexander John Shaia returns to the podcast to share the pattern he sees at the heart of the sacred texts of the four Gospels; a way that can guide us on a journey of growth, transformation and love. Alexander describes through this conversation how each Gospel is written in response to one of life's four great questions. It was as an anthropologist that he first discovered the universal ways that humans tell their story, but it was in the Gospels that Alexander found a living guide to wisdom, courage, joy and service that enables us to see our lives as part of the pattern centred in a mystical relationship with the cosmic Christ.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There is no greater moment in our faith and arguably in the world than the resurrection of Jesus. In a moment in time the world swapped its axis and forever changed. In this episode, Christopher and Maggie talk with Susanna Muntz about indigenization of theology. What do the teachings of Jesus look like in specific cultures, times, and geographies? How can we let theology grow out of the soil and people of a place instead of mass-producing a Christianity and exporting it everywhere? These are topics we discuss in this episode. Christopher and Maggie are spiritual directors that like talking about spiritual things. If you haven't read Alexander's book yet, I strongly urge you to read it prior to walking and even after walking! I sure wish I would have read it before my first Camino. Alexander, a veteran Pilgrim, is also a best-selling author, well-known speaker, anthropologist, and psychologist. He serves the Camino community as a pilgrimage mentor and retreat leader. In this interview, you will hear us chat about his own Camino transformation, the hero journey and how it applies to Pilgrimage, and his seven-step process in making a Camino a Rite of Passage. It was an honor to have Alexander visit us at The Camino Cafe. The guidance he offers in this interview is helping me to continue the processing of my 2019 Pilgrimage. I can't wait to use all of his suggestions from his book when I walk my next Camino. Buen Camino!

Other contributors include: James McAlister of Sufjan Stevens, Jarod Evans of Blackwatch Studios, and Huntley Miller, Mastering Engineer for Bon Iver, Zedd, and more. Further Info: As a straight white male, Will Retherford was compelled to write an advocate song for his queer friends and the larger LGBTQ+ community. He wrote this song on the same day as the wedding of his dear friends Sam & Haley Hedrick, in which one is transgender. As a long-time advocate for the queer community, Will has been frustrated at the great rejection of these people from society, church, and family. Will hopes this song brings healing to many and convicts the right people who are infected by homophobia. Although this song is for queer people, it belongs to all people who have been rejected, shut out, and told to change. “Take pride. Take heart.” Artist Quote: “Some of my queer friends have been the most important people in my life. This is a song to tell them to never change who they are and that they are very much loved.” Artist Bio: Artist and producer Will Retherford is known for writing about social constructs and post-spiritual ideas crafted with the sounds of orchestral dream pop and mild flavors of folk and indie rock. Inspired by his Anglican faith and participation in activism, Will seeks to unite people through the power of music and ideas in the everyday discovery of purpose and belonging.
While walking the Camino de Santiago is demanding in and of itself, the completion of pilgrimage poses a special challenge. The mixed emotions a pilgrim often feels when arriving in Santiago are often a precursor to the prolonged slump that can occur at home. This episode focuses on the process of return, and the steps a pilgrim can take to make their pilgrimage a genuinely transformative experience--should they so desire it! Alexander John Shaia, author of Returning from Camino, offers practical advice alongside of his own story, to help guide pilgrims through each part of the process. He is followed by Ginny Bartolone, whose own story of facing anxiety and depression on pilgrimage lends further insight into the healing journey.
Alexander Shaia returns to the oneLife Maps Podcast to talk with Sharon Swing about the Gospel of Matthew as a life-stage guide for facing change. You may want to listen to the first episode we recorded with Alexander in episode 34: Reading the Gospels as Life-Stage Guides. If you have engaged in 'Listen to My Life: Maps for Recognizing and Responding to God in My Story,' you may find that your lingering question may be a reflection of the four questions we discuss in this episode of the OneLIfe Maps Podcast. The Gospels may have more to say about how to navigate thru this season of your life than you may imagine.Alexander Shaia invites us to take a look at the gospel thru a fresh lens and read each gospel account as more than a telling of Jesus' life and words. Each is the story of a practice in response to a core life question:Gospel of Matthew: How do we face change? (The focus of this episode.)Mark: How do we move through trials and suffering?John: How do we receive joy and know union?Luke: How do we mature in service? And these four gospels are more than the sum of their parts. The four in the sequence of their fourth century reading cycle are one of the world's great maps of the universal journey- one of growth, transformation and love. As Alexander's describes, The Four-Gospel Journey is the pattern of the living, here and now Christ - a pattern within the Cosmos, in everything and across all time. To make this universal journey with another or a small community - see the "Heart and Mind Companion Guides" at the Quadratos website. The Guides follow the book. There is one guide for each of the four paths, as well as one to prepare for the journey, and another on the eight core practices of Quadratos. Alexander John Shaia, PhD, is a thoughtful and poetic man, living the ancient rhythms of his Lebanese and Aramaic heritage. With deep conviction, he invites us into a practice of spirituality (and Christianity) for the twenty-first century—one that crosses traditional boundaries, encourages vital thinking and inhabits a genuine community of the heart. As a spiritual director, educator, anthropologist, psychologist, Sandplay therapist and ritualist, Alexander is a wholistic, cross-discipline visionary and passionate professional speaker. He founded The Journey of Quadratos LLC, as well as the Blue Door Retreat in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Now he travels internationally, speaking, leading seminars and conducting retreats on Quadratos, the Four-Gospel Journey and Gateway to Oneness (The 72 Hours of Easter.) How do we face change? How do we move through suffering? How do we receive joy? And how do we mature in service? According to psychologist, spiritual director, liturgist and author Alexander Shaia, these four questions are the questions of our lives. They are universal, sequential, and cyclical, and are recognised by every major religious faith and school of psychology and forms the very heart of Christian belief and practice. In fact, Alexander made the startling discovery that each of the four gospels were written to address each of these four questions. So if we long for transformation, then we need to join the gospel writers in wrestling with these questions. Needless to say, this is a very interesting episode! Click here to keep up with the latest Goose News: http://wildgoosefestival.org/signup/ In this session, Alexander will articulate his ground-breaking book on the four gospels, “Heart and Mind.” Of this work, Marc Andrus, Episcopal Bishop of California says, ” In ‘Heart and Mind’ Alexander gives us back our central sacred text–the four gospels–not as conflicted and faulty historical records, but as a vibrant, luminous path of transformation. He reveals ‘The Four-Gospel Journey’ as a living guide, re-centering human life on wisdom, compassion, and service, rooted in a mystical relationship with Christ. And the potential for this living guide is already becoming manifest, as individuals, groups and entire communities are using it all over the world, and the word is spreading.” Alexander is a frequent guest on the Robcast, The Deconstructions and Can I Say This At Church. For more, see www.quadratos.com Alexander John Shaia is an internationally sought-after author, speaker, ritualist and pilgrim mentor. He is known as a poetic and reflective gay man, living the ancient rhythms of his Lebanese, Aramaic and eastern Christian heritage. His seminal work, Heart and Mind: The Four-Gospel Journey for Radical Transformation, is being hailed as a breakthrough that restores the four gospels to their first-century context, revealing how they were chosen to be one, continuous, non-dualistic account of Jesus the Christ. In this way, the Gospel becomes a wise and numinous text, leading us on the journey of growth and transformation. Alexander holds a doctorate in clinical psychology and has been a spiritual director, Jungian and Sandplay psychotherapist, cultural anthropologist, and pastoral associate. When not on the road, a perfect day finds him with his dog, a book of poetry, and the presence of ancient trees.
My faith has grown leaps and bounds And with it so has my understanding of just how little I know about Easter. There is no greater moment in our faith and arguably in the world than the resurrection of Jesus. In a moment in time the world swapped its axis and forever changed. So too has our knowledge of the beautiful history surrounding our celebration with our brothers and sisters in the faith in Easter. How should we posture our hearts, daily, in reflection upon a magnificent moment in time. Guest: Alexander Shaia Alexander was born and raised in Birmingham, AL. Studied at Notre Dame and then went on the same quest we all do to navigate our life and our faith together and the result is disarmingly beautiful. Please go and get his latest book Heart and Mind (Second Edition) you will be pleased that you did. Sit back, take some notes and lets talk about Jesus! This is week 1 of a 2 part series called "Instant Replay" where we're looking back at the 2 most downloaded episodes of season 1 and replaying them. The second most downloaded episode was an interview I did with Dr. Alexander John Shaia about his book "Heart and Mind" where he looks at the 4 Gospels and talks about how they are a picture of the seasons that every human being passes through on life journey. Check out the episode, go get the book, and give the What If Project some love on iTunes. Show Notes: Dr. Alexander John Shaia Heart and Mind What If Project on iTunes
In this final episode of 2018 I talk through a piece of the theology paper I wrote for my last class at Alliance Theological Seminary. We've been talking about the Gospel of Mark over the last 5 months at the What If Project and so my paper is kind of a capstone on that study where I talk through 6 different observations about Jesus as He was presented by Mark in his Gospel. Check it out, be challenged, and enjoy! Show Notes: Read the Full Paper HERE. Binding the Strong Man by Ched Myers Mark for Everyone by NT Wright Heard and Mind by Dr. Alexander John Shaia
This is the last bonus episode for the season of Advent and we're talking about the early Celtic Christians and how their understanding of darkness and light being friends as opposed to enemies led to the formation of the Advent season and can help bring deeper meaning to our understanding of Christmas in 2018. In this week's episode I had the honor of sitting down with one of my favorite authors and teachers, Dr. Alexander Shaia (**link to his book is below!). We talked about the importance of reading the 4 Gospels of the New Testament in their historical context, how the 4 Gospels are actually reflective of a 4 stage process that every human being on earth travels through over and over and over again throughout their lifetime, and did a quick deep dive into the book of Mark since that's our current focus during this first season of the What If Project. Enjoy! Show Notes: Heart and Mind by Alexander Shaia WhatIfProject.net - blog post
Adam and John bring the Bible series to a close with Dr. Alexander FREAKING Shaia! Alexander discusses his beautiful perspectives on the four Gospels which introduce a new (yet ancient) way of seeing these accounts of Jesus the Christ. Are the Gospels merely biographies of the life of Jesus? Are we supposed to find some significance in the facts of his life? Maybe there was a deeper, richer, more inviting, disturbing and transformative meaning there from the very beginning. What if memorizing facts isn't the point? What if the point is to enter into the journey and be transformed? Check out Dr. Shaia's work at www.quadratos.com and find him on facebook for more information: Alexander John Shaia.
