When life handed Dan Mullins a silence he'd never asked for, it wasn't the silence of peace but of challenge—a virus had stolen his singing voice, casting a shadow over his musical career. But from the depths of that quiet time, a story of resilience and reinvention emerged, which Dan shares openly in our latest episode. It's a testament to the power of the human spirit, chronicling his journey from the devastating diagnosis following the aftermath of a virus to the discovery of a richer, more captivating sound that's now the hallmark of his music.Struck by the profundity of silent moments, Dan speaks candidly about the unexpected gifts that came with his vocal rest. Imagine this: a wellspring of creativity bursting forth as he unearths a treasure trove of old melodies and crafts new songs, each a testament to his undying passion for music. Listeners will travel with Dan on his path of recovery, learning how meticulous vocal exercises and a supportive family and medical network paved the way for a new album inspired by life's intricate tapestry. His narrative is not just for musicians but for anyone who finds themselves at the crossroads between loss and the sheer determination to create something beautiful from it.Finally, we meander through Dan's creative plans, and next Camino walk, to the intimate stories behind his podcast and record ventures. In this episode of The Traveling Therapist Podcast, Kym is joined by Christina Kantzavelos to delve into the profound experience of walking the Camino de Santiago. Christina shares her transformative journey on this ancient pilgrimage, highlighting the personal and spiritual growth she encountered along the way. Starting in 2015, she embarked on the Camino Frances route, a 500-mile trek from France to Spain, driven by both a quest for personal discovery and a break from her discontentment in hospital social work. During her pilgrimage, Christina discovered her passion for travel writing and focused on the unique challenges of traveling with celiac disease. This led to the creation of her publication "BuenQamino," inspired by the common greeting among pilgrims. Christina's Camino experience was not just a physical journey but also a journey of self-discovery and reevaluation, leading her to pivot her professional life towards a path that truly resonated with her. Christina P. Kantzavelos is a licensed psychotherapist (LCSW) writer, artist, and citizen of the world, with a home-base in Joshua Tree, CA. She received her Bachelor's and Master's of Social Welfare (MSW) from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and her Masters of Library and Information Sciences from San Jose California State University (SJSU). She's a first-generation college student, and third culture kid (TCK) holding dual citizenship in Greece/ the EU. She has visited over 35 different countries and documented most of it on social media. However, it was in completing the Camino de Santiago (500-mile pilgrimage across Spain) at the end of 2015, where she realized her strong affinity with writing. She decided to start BuenQamino, an Award-Winning, gluten-free and health-conscious lifestyle, and travel publication. In her 100% remote clinical practice (@BeginWithinToday), she treats and is an advocate for those with chronic illness and C-PTSD, utilizing various modalities such as EMDR, CA, neural retraining, EFT and others. She recently published 'Begin Within - A Daily Healing Journal' (www.beginwithintoday.com) for those living life with chronic illness or other health-related challenges. Avoid Crowds on the El Camino de Compostella There are three ways to avoid the crowds when doing the El Camino: avoid peak season, avoid the busiest routes, avoid the last 100 km into Santiago. Today's guest, David, chose a great way by walking the first two stages of the most popular route, the French Way, but instead of the last 100 km/60 miles like most people, he walked the first two stages over the Pyrenees from Saint Jean Pied de Port to Logrono. While David made many friends among the fellow 'pilgrims' walking the Camino at the same time. it wasn't crowded, even though he walked during the high season in July! Since the twelfth century, millions of seekers have walked a pilgrimage in northern Spain called the Camino de Santiago. Considered to be one of the three most famous Christian pilgrimages, along with Rome and Jerusalem, The Camino, as it is commonly known, has grown in popularity in more recent years. Estimates are that in 2023 alone, 450,000 people made this journey along one of 10 routes, all leading to Santiago de Compostela, where it is said that St. James is buried. The Camino Frances (the oldest route) actually spans 500 miles, beginning in France. From Oct. 21-Nov.5, 10 pilgrims from Round Hill Community Church (ranging in age from 64-88 years young) took part in that ancient trek, walking the last 100 miles of the Camino Frances from Sarria to Santiago. We wish you a Buen Camino (a good journey)!

In this week's special episode we talk with our Camino De Santiago friends some new and some that are on the journey with us. We learn that we can always learn from others and that being in the flow happens when we are present in the moment, open to learning, and open to living. On this leg of my Camino trip, our group is light one cosmonaut, because our yogi Vanessa finished her Camino experience. I am feeling fortunate to have had Vanessa on the trip our youngest Maester and I also feel fortunate that as a group we saw such amazing villages in France. We said goodbye to the quaint villages of Le Puy, Aumont Aubrac, Nasbinal, St. Chely, St. Colm d'olt, Espalion, Estaing, Golinhac, Conques, St. Circ La Popie, Rocamadour and Figeac. We got around
Join me and Rebekah Scott as we play 20 Camino Questions. Rebekah is an American journalist who has been living in Spain for the last 17 years. She's the author of several books including, "A Furnace Full of God" a memoir about her life in Spain and living on the Camino Frances route. This book is a featured selection of the Santiago de Compostela Book Club. Her contributions to the path and the Camino community have been numerous. During this interview, we chatted briefly about her books and her foundation, Peaceable Projects. Imagine living on the silent stretch of the meseta section on the Camino, where the hustle of everyday life fades into the background. Rebekah enriches our understanding of this solitude, revealing how walking through it throws into sharp relief those truths that are often obscured by life's chaos. She dives into her love for solitary walks but also highlights the unique bond shared with fellow pilgrims on the trail. We discuss her recent visit to Machu Picchu, exploring her experience on the mystical Inca trail and how it contrasts with the Camino. She shares her thoughts on preserving the heritage of the Camino while navigating its evolution—how do we protect the path for everyone, regardless of their economic status, and honor its spirit of inclusivity? Lastly, we revel in her insights on the Camino's magical power to bond people, encourage resilience, and inspire a purpose-driven life.Link to Rebekah's books:https://www.amazon.com/stores/Rebekah-Scott/author/B082T3TKC8?ref=ap_rdr&store_ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=trueWatch on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6VN9ze3z61n6tRLtDXWuQwJoin the Sanitago de Compostela Book Club:https://www.facebook.com/groups/273761715169505

Hey Travel Tales listeners, as we ramp up for season four, we wanted to share another episode from our Unpacked by AFAR podcast, this one an interview with travel writer, actor, and director Andrew McCarthy. Want more? Follow the show here: https://megaphone.link/AFAR6756233083 Show notes Hiking Spain's Camino de Santiago trail is one of the world's great pilgrimages. And actor, writer, and director Andrew McCarthy has walked the 500-mile Camino Frances, not once but twice, most recently with his teen son. It's a journey he documented in his new book, Walking with Sam (Grand Central Publishing, May 2023), and shares with us in this week's episode. Some of you may know Andrew from his work in film and TV—he starred in such '80s classics as St. Elmo's Fire and Weekend at Bernie's—but here at AFAR, we're more familiar with his work as a travel writer and editor. In 2010, he participated in one of AFAR's first Spin the Globe trips: We spun the globe and sent Andrew to Ethiopia with less than 24 hours' notice—a trip that culminated in his near arrest. But his latest book is a quieter adventure. As his son took his first steps into adulthood, Andrew wanted to recreate his own first Camino walk—and cement their bond. As they walked (sometimes together, sometimes apart), they faced blisters and hours in the baking sun, the paradoxes of solitude and companionship, and the transformative power of the Camino pilgrimage. A couple of years ago, Julia embarked on a solo hike along England's 630-mile South West Coast Path. Since then, she has cycled King Alfred's Way, a 217-mile mainly off-road cycle route in southern England, and walked the Camino Frances and Camino Portuguese! But Julia's adventures don't stop there. In between her travels, she's been busy writing about her experiences, hoping to inspire others to embrace their own bucket lists. During this process, she's discovered a love for hiking and is also writing walking guidebooks to encourage others to get outdoors and explore. Julia's story is a testament to the power of setting goals, pursuing your passions, and living life to the fullest. After this interview, all I can think about it walking a Camino in Croatia! I think you'll see why after you meet Vedran Prazen, an eight-time Camino veteran, and Pia Veronika Klinac, a 15-year-old first-time Pilgrim in this interview. recorded in Santiago. Vedran is one of the key people involved in revitalizing the Croatian Camino paths. His personal story is so inspiring from overcoming major health challenges to falling in love on the Camino! His insights on how the Camino is like "getting to peek into the keyhole of paradise" and how the walk feels like an "internal shower" are beautiful descriptions of what it's like to walk a Camino. History buffs will also love hearing about the findings of Pilgrim traditions in Croatian dating back to 1203 AD! Pia shares some delightful insights on what it was like to walk as a 15-year-old, with her Mom, and with the Croatian group. I found her to be wise beyond her years and it was such a joy to spend time with her. I hope you enjoy meeting Vedran and Pia as much as I did! The Pilgrimage:A Pilgrim or Peregrino is defined as a person who journeys to a sacred place often for religious or spiritual reasons. The Camino de Santiago (or, the Way of St. James) is a pilgrimage that can be traced back to medieval times. There are several different routes, but all lead to the tomb of the Apostle Saint James, in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The most popular route and the one documented in the movie The Way starring Martin Sheen is called the Camino Frances and it starts in St. Jean Pied de Port, France, and goes up and over the Pyrenees Mountains into Spain for 500+ miles to Santiago de Compostela, in the Galician Region of Spain. The scallop shell is the official symbol of the Camino de Santiago and most pilgrims have a scallop shell attached to their backpackAlbergues are hostels where pilgrims can stay for usually less than $15 and they often provide a communal meal (and wine, of course)All pilgrims must have a 'pilgrim's passport' in order to stay in alberguesPilgrims must get their passports stamped at least once per day at albergues, coffee shops, churches, places of interest, etc in order to get a Compostela (certificate) in Santiago.Over 300,000 pilgrims arrive in Santiago each yearMy Walk:August 26, 2021Started walking from St. Jean Pied de Port, FranceSept 28, 2021Arrived in Santiago de Compostela, SpainOctober 3, 2021Arrived in Finisterre, Spain ('The End of the World')October 4, 2021Arrived in Muxia, SpainStats:Total # of Walking Days………. 39 daysTotal Number of Steps………. 1,462,154 stepsTotal Distance Walked (km)………. 1052.6 kilometersTotal Distance Walked (mi)……… 654.3 milesAverage Number of Steps………. 37,491 steps per dayAverage Distance Walked (km)………. 27 km per dayAverage Distance Walked (mi)……… 16.8 mi per dayBuen Camino, Mike---------------------------------------------------------------➜Episode Notes: https://mikemurphy.co/158➜Gear & Resources I Use:: https://mikemurphy.co/resources--------------------------------------------------------------- Support the show
