Learn more about Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI).When trying to consider budget as well as mission and ministry, churches of many sizes offer educational service, from a small daycare to a prestigious Episcopal prep school. And these are often built on a classical school models.Classical education refers specifically to a model of education centered on the Western classical trivium of grammar, logic, and rhetoric. If you can do a classical school well, you can provide a great education and do very well for your budget. But does it produce snobby kids? Put another way, does it shelter privileged kids even further, and prevent kids with disadvantages from experiencing a remarkable community of learning? One way to negotiate this is through scholarships, or through careful intentionality in enrollment or curriculum development. But our guest today has also explored ways to make sure that kids with disabilities -- including neurodivergence -- are welcomed and integrated into a classical community. What they've discovering is an unusual model for classical education, and an unexpected ministry of healing. My guest today is the Rev. Nathan Carr. Nate is a bi-vocational priest serving as vicar of St. John's Oklahoma City and headmaster of The Academy of Classical Christian Studies, a multi-campus school serving 1,000 PreK-12 students across the Oklahoma City metro. “The thing about negative thoughts, though, is that they can become barriers to us moving forward and achieving the things that we want, when we listen to them. Negative thoughts are a bit, a little bit like seeds, right? We plant them in our brain. But if we attend to them, right? And if we water them through that attention, they will grow and they will spread. So we actually want to work on some different skills, where we take the negative thoughts and we shift them, or transform them, or we move away from them altogether,” says Dr. Lara Pence, Spartan's Chief Mind Doctor. In this episode, we look back to some great episodes for help dealing with negative thoughts so we're prepared going into the New Year. We look to Sal Di Stefano, Nate Carr, and Dr. Lara Pence to help us fight our demons. In this episode you'll learn… - Impact of training with a negative mindset of yourself instead of a negative one - You don't invite negative thoughts, they just come in. Prepare and train yourself for them - NO means “Next opportunity” - Counter-thinking negative thoughts, acknowledging they are only thoughts, and removing judgment about the thought If you want to watch the full episodes, Mind Pump's Sal Di Stefano Will Change the Way You Think About Diet & Exercise - https://youtu.be/4KB__c79XuU Olympic Wrestler & Coach Nate Carr Explains How to Overcome “NO” ep.017 - https://youtu.be/SdcJVGVI_YM Letting Go of Negative Thoughts / SPARTAN MIND 045 - https://youtu.be/iIHPJiCNUUA SPONSORS This episode of Spartan Up is brought to you by FITAID and Athletic Brewing Company. Wrestling requires a mindset that transcends sport. What can you learn from them? Everything. It’s a sport with no excuses. It’s just you and your competitor and if you fail, there is no one else to blame. The sport by its very nature develops mental toughness. Joe talks to three promising young wrestlers, Nate Carr Jr., an Olympic hopeful in a legendary family of wrestling greats, and All Americans from Cornell, Gabe Dean and Nahshon Garrett. They discuss the unique aspects of the sport that prepare its participants to excel in life. The thing that they all share in common is their sense of drive and moving forward no matter what. The very tools that’ll help you grapple with life’s inevitable adversities. Lessons: 1. If nothing changes, nothing changes. 2. Sometimes to master adversity you need to create it. 3. Treat people to your gift.
Download the action plan from this episode here: http://jimharshawjr.com/action/ Today I bring you Joe DeSena. Joe DeSena is the founder of Spartan adventure races which have become wildly popular in recent years. He’s not a wrestler but he has tremendous respect for the mindset of a wrestler which is why he got his kids into the sport. Joe has the wrestling mindset. Not only can he operate when he’s uncomfortable but he actively seeks out discomfort. He has an absolutely ridiculous backstory as you’re about to hear and he shares with you some interesting thoughts on how to succeed at whatever it is that you do. On his own podcast, SpartanUp, he interviews successful people from all walks of life and has even had wrestlers Kyle Dake and Nate Carr on his show in addition to Richard Branson, Gary Vaynerchuk and others. His story is an interesting one to say the least. One that you would never think would lead him to start an adventure race company. He shares that story as well as some of his key beliefs about success in this 27th episode of Wrestling with Greatness. Like every episode, I have created an action plan from what Joe shares with us here today. If you’re listening on iTunes, click on the image and the link to download the action plan will show up. Or just go to JimHarshaw.net/27 Listen now! Let's connect: Website | Facebook | Twitter About Your Host Jim Harshaw My name is Jim Harshaw. You and I were both wrestlers once so we’re coming from the same place, which is a good place for us to start. And I know where you’re at. You’re working hard and qualified for what you do but you aren’t getting what you want. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re at the right place because you can get there from here. And I can help. Who I Am I’m a speaker, author and former Division I All American wrestler that helps motivated former wrestlers reach their full potential by getting clarity on their what they really want and taking agressive action to lead their ideal life. I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve been lucky. I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have. I will show you how. Why You are Here You were a wrestler. You’ve trained and competed in the world’s toughest sport. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track. You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not trained, competed, struggled and overcome like you have. That’s the value of your education as a wrestler. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow. Here I will teach you, with the help of brilliant minds that have been shaped by the learning that takes place in our sport, to be who you want to be. I sense that you want this because you have read this far. To take the next step today, click here. FOLLOW JIM Website | Facebook | Twitter
Nate Carr grew up with a full team of elite wrestlers in his backyard. Out of five competing brothers, all were Division I NCAA All-Americans and two reached the Olympics. Nate managed to edge above the rest, earning Olympic bronze. What spurred him on? It could have been his indomitable attitude. His positive mindset is a motivational machine first leading to his success and then to that of the wrestlers he coaches. Listen in to hear the sort of self-talk that leads to greatness.Watch the video episode at http://spartanuppodcast.com Lessons:1. Never personalize failure.2. “No” means “next opportunity.” “Yes” means “you expecting success.”3. Speak the end of the thing at the beginning, i.e., state the goal then set the strategy.
