In this first episode of LANDBACK FOR THE PEOPLE, Nick Tilsen sits at the table with matriarch Madonna Thunder Hawk (Oohenumpa Lakota). Madonna jokingly calls herself the Forest Gump of Indigenous resistance, since, over the last 55 years, she's been at almost every focal point in the fight for Indigenous liberation. Through numerous decades of resistance efforts, from the occupation of Mount Rushmore in 1971 and the takeover of the BIA headquarters in 1972, to the siege at Wounded Knee in 1973 and unforgettably Standing Rock in 2016, Madonna exemplifies what it means to be a true Warrior Woman. Nick and Madonna lay bare how generations of Indigenous people have met across politics and places for the sake of LANDBACK, revealing moments in the movement that were unimaginable. In this conversation, we are reminded of the blood and ancestral memory of our deep connection to land and water, inheriting the movement knowledge and stories of those before us in preparation for a liberated future. Madonna continues to honor the matriarchs of the Red Power Movement through the Warrior Woman Project, a collaborative of matriarchs, storytellers, and archivists who “bring to light the radical impact of Indigenous women” throughout history. https://www.warriorwomen.org/

An hour of talkers, from NFL playoffs, to Shannon Sharpe's on-court display at a Lakers game, to NDN.
Hosts Jill Wine-Banks and Victor Shi are joined by Simon Rosenberg and John Della Volpe to talk about the midterm elections and we should all take away from the midterms. What is the future of the Gen Z vote? How off were polls and how should we read polls from now on? What should both parties learn from the midterms? We get into all of this with two experts. Simon Rosenberg is the president of NDN and New Policy Institute and is a veteran of two presidential campaigns and was someone who predicted that there would be no red wave in this election, which proved accurate. John Della Volpe is the director of polling at Harvard and author of Fight: How Gen Z is Channeling their Fear and Passion to Save America. He predicted there would be a Gen Z wave and he was right. Simon Rosenberg is the head of the progressive think tank NDN, and he has a message for jittery Democrats on the eve of the midterms: cheer up! This week on the Playbook Deep Dive podcast we sit down with the Democratic Party's apostle of optimism. “I'm not sitting here and telling you we're going to win,” Simon told us over lunch this week. “What I'm telling you is that the narrative about this election, about there being a red wave— there isn't one. There never has been.” If you spend a lot of time on political Twitter, you have no doubt encountered Simon's tweets and threads over the last few weeks. He's built a large and loyal following of Democrats looking for silver linings amid the clouds of negative media coverage about their party's prospects in the midterms. — Hispanics abandoning his party? Simon says that NDN's polling doesn't show it. — Polling averages tilting to the GOP in the last few weeks? Simon says they've been polluted by a barrage of Republican polls dumped strategically to depress Democrats and excite Republicans. (This claim has been met with a lot of skepticism, because surely Democratic campaigns would be leaking their own internals, but we digress…) — And that red wave? Simon says that if you look at the Kansas abortion referendum, the five House special elections earlier this year, and especially the early voting data, that the anti-Trump coalition that powered Democrats to victory in 2018 and 2020 is holding strong in 2022. Ryan Lizza is a Playbook co-author for POLITICO. Simon Rosenberg is president of NDN. Afra Abdullah is associate producer for POLITICO audio. Kara Tabor is producer for POLITICO audio. Brook Hayes is senior editor for POLITICO audio. Adam Allington is senior producer for POLITICO audio. Jenny Ament is executive producer for POLITICO audio.

With less than two weeks left before the midterms, Simon Rosenberg of NDN and Tara McGowan of Good Information and Courier Newsroom, are focusing on the races and issues driving turnout. In our first segment, they talk with Nick Rathod, Campaign Manager of Beto O'Rourke's Gubernatorial bid about the state of the race, their innovative messaging strategy, and how to build a structure for future progressive victories. After that, Simon and Tara are joined by Robert Shapiro, an economist who is the cofounder and chairman of Sonecon, to discuss the impact Biden's economic policy has had and how Democrats can more effectively tell that story.
