In Episode 11,   Lauren Broom discusses all about pool heating with Tom Soukup , owner of Patriot Pool Heating.Tom Soukup, the founder and President of Patriot Pool Heating, began this journey over 12 years ago as a boiler expert.  Over the years, Tom has been brought into the pool heating industry as a consultant and designer for hydronic pool heating.  This consulting led to Patriot Pool Heating being formed in 2017, which focuses on High-Efficient Pool Heating Solutions.  Tom has since designed a high-efficiency indirect system that has won several awards and articles.  Tom is recognized by NESPA, The Propane counsel, Architect Firms, and Pool Designers as the go-to expert for pool heating for any size project.

On this episode, Mark Simon is joined by University of Alabama journalism instructor, Meredith Cummings, who also is the director of the Alabama Scholastic Press Association (ASPA) and the National Elementary Scholastic Press Association (NESPA).Meredith talked about what teaching journalism to college students in a her state is like, the way she approaches her classes, and how sports has played an important role in teaching larger lessons about journalism.She also talked about the role the Alabama Multicultural Journalism Association has played in improving newsroom diversity starting at the scholastic level. In this episode, we asked Chas Borgardus of Budd’s Pools & Spas back to discuss the pool closing season with us. Winterizations may not be something we deal with much here in Arizona, but we know a large portion of the country enters their closing season after Labor Day and we wanted to discuss them. Being from the New Jersey area and on the board of directors of NESPA, Chas has a ton of experience on this topic and has taught many pool closing classes over the years. When it comes to closing a pool, it is critical that it is done correctly so that the lines do not crack or burst when it gets to freezing temperatures. That’s why it is so important to understand what you are doing. Throughout the episode, we discuss Budd’s closing process, some best practices, common mistakes, balancing the water, blowing out lines, pool covers, scheduling, and more.   Budd’s Pools & Spas began with the vision of one man, Herb Budd, Jr. He founded the company fresh out of college in 1958, working side by side with his wife Phyllis. That same year, Budd’s Pools & Spas became a member of the National Spa and Pool Institute, where Herb later served as one of the National Directors. With continued service and dedication, Herb and Phyllis grew Budd’s Pools & Spas to become an award-winning business, highly respected by its peers in the industry. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Mitch Katz who is the General Manager at Land of Elite and the current President of NESPA. We first met Mitch in Atlantic City at the Pool and Spa Show in 2019 and knew that we had to have him on the show. We were excited that we were finally able to make it happen. Mitch shares his story with us about how he grew up in the family business and he learned from a young age the amount of grit it takes to run a business. After graduating from college Mitch knew he wanted to be involved in the business and has put that college education to use by integrating many new systems and processes. He even shares a few with us during the episode. He also helped start a pool service division for the company which has become successful as well.   Land of Elite is a full service “design and build” company. They take on the whole project, mostly in house, which includes the swimming pool along with other things such as gardens, sidewalks, fences, patios, pizza ovens, and playscape or tennis courts. Pretty much any piece you can think of, they can do for their customers. This is pretty unique, as a lot of other companies would sub those out. They have built and continue to service many high-end elaborate pools over the years. We were very impressed by their portfolio.
