In this episode of “5 Questions With…”, Kristin Moller, senior vice president of our Toronto office connects with Mary Bemis, founder of Insiders Guide to Spas and one of the most recognized names in spa and wellness journalism. She was one of the first reporters to focus on spas and wellness in the 1990s and forged a vocabulary for spa reportage that is widely used by those who cover the issues today. Recently honored as a Top 30 Influential Voice Transforming Wellness in 2023 by Medika Life, Mary is an inaugural honoree of Folio's Top Women in Media Award. In 1997, she launched American Spa magazine, in 2007, she co-founded Organic Spa magazine, and in between serving on the ISPA and NYSPA Board of Directors, she was on the launch teams of Luxury SpaFinder and New Beauty magazines. She is a Founding Board Member and Symposium Chair Emeritus of the Washington Spa Alliance (WSPA). Mary has visited and written about thousands of spas in her career and she has worked to build awareness for the industry that she loves through her leadership and mentoring. Listen in as Mary shares how she got her start in spa journalism, what she sees as the best and in some cases most underrated spa treatments to book, how AI technology may be coming soon to a spa near you, which retro spa experiences are reemerging in today's spa landscape and what are some of her most favorite spas to visit. https://www.insidersguidetospas.com/ https://www.instagram.com/insidersguidetospas/

Google's very own Martin Splitt joined me on the SEJ Show to share his thoughts and opinions on various technical SEO topics, such as Semantic HTML, Google Search Console, indexing, and client-side rendering. Explore how to leverage these powerful tools to improve your website's SEO. Prefer to watch the video? Register here: http://bit.ly/3YQxzG7 I would say make sure that you are focusing on the content quality and that you are focusing on delivering value to your users. Those have been, will always be, and are the most important things. Everything else should follow from that. –Martin Splitt Suppose you are fine-tuning technical details or your website's structure or markup. In that case, you are likely missing out on the more significant opportunities of asking yourself what people need from your website. –Martin Splitt This question keeps coming up. This is not the first time and will not be the last time this question will come up and continue to be asked. I don't know why everyone thinks about who, what value, or who. It's about structure. I can't emphasize this enough, if you choose to have H1s as your top-level structure of the content, that's fine. It just means that the top level of the content is structured along the H1s. –Martin Splitt [00:00] - About Martin [02:47] - Why Semantic SEO is important. [04:22] - Is there anything that can be done within Semantic HTML to better communicate with Google? [06:02] - Should schema markup information match what's in the document? [08:24] - What parts of Semantic search does Google need the most help with? [09:19] - What is Martin's opinion on header tags? [14:22] - Is the responsibility of implementing Semantic HTML on the SEO or the developer? [16:19] - How accessible is Semantic HTML within a WordPress, or Gutenberg-style environment? [19:58] - How compatible is Semantic HTML with WCAG? [21:08] - What is the relationship of Semantic HTML to the overall concept of the Semantic web RDF, etc.? [25:04] - Can the wrong thumbnails be rectified utilizing Semantic HTML? [28:42] - Is there another type of schema markup that can still refer to the organization and use IDs on article pages? [32:10] - Can adding schema markup to show the product category hierarchy and modifying HTML help Google understand the relationship between the product and its category? [33:49] - Is preserving header hierarchy more critical than which header you use? [36:36] - Is it bad practice to display different content on pages to returning users versus new users? [40:08] - What are the best practices for error handling with SPAs? [45:31] - What is the best way to deal with search query parameters being indexed in Google? [48:02] - Should you be worried about product pages not being included within the XML site map? [50:26] - How does Google prioritize headers? [56:00] - How important is it for developers and SEOs to start implementing Semantic HTML now? [57:31] - What should SEO & developers be focusing on? If you understand that it's a 404, you have two options because two things can happen that you don't want to happen. One is an error page that gets indexed and appears in search results where it shouldn't. The other thing is that you are creating 404s in the search console and probably muddling with your data. –Martin Splitt If you have one H1 and nothing else under it except for H2s and then content H2 and then content H2, that doesn't change anything. That means you structured your content differently. You didn't structure it better. You didn't structure it worse. You just structured it differently. –Martin Splitt For more content like this, subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/searchenginejournal Are you looking to keep up with current and effective digital marketing today? Pete and Vicky discuss the 2024 point charts released by Disney Vacation Club. For the first time in a few years, there were no significant changes. DVC also increased direct pricing for most resorts. Disney announced the closing date for Splash Mountain at Walt Disney World. RunDisney volunteer benefits have been reduced without notice, starting with the recent Wine & Dine Half Marathon. N099 Season 8 of the My DVC Points Podcast was brought to you by: DVC Resale Market - Industry Leader in DVC Resales DVC Rental Store - DVC Point Rentals Monera Financial - Exclusively Financing DVC Contracts Patreon supporters in the My DVC Points VIP Producer Club. DVC Points Charts Released for 2024 Disney Vacation Club released the 2024 point charts last week, and the biggest item of note was that there were no significant changes beyond the dates of the holidays shifting. This is the first time in four years that the points charts have stayed the same, as over the last three years Disney has been slowly increasing the amount of points required for staying in October and November while at the same time lowering the number of points required for summer stays. Source: Disney Vacation Club website Splash Mountain at Disney World Closing January 23rd On December 3rd, Walt Disney World announced that the final day of operation for Splash Mountain will be on January 22nd, with the ride permanently closing for good on January 23rd. There has been no announcement for the final closing date of Splash Mountain at Disneyland Resort, but the ride is expected to close soon since both rides are scheduled to re-open in late 2024 as Tiana's Bayou Adventure. Source: Walt Disney World website, Theme Park Tourist Direct Pricing Increases across Multiple DVC resorts Disney Vacation Club increased direct pricing for Aulani Disney Vacation Club Villas, Disney's Riviera Resort, and Villas at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa to have a base price of $217 per point. Many other sold-out resorts had direct pricing increase by $10 per point: Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort (now $275) Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney's Wilderness Lodge (now $215) Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney's Wilderness Lodge (now $250) Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas (now $210) Disney's Beach Club Villas (now $275) Disney's BoardWalk Villas (now $240) Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort (now $165) Disney's Vero Beach Resort (now $150) Disney's Old Key West Resort and Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spas went up as well by $5 to $205 per point. The only resorts to not increase were Villas at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and interestingly Disney's Polynesian Villas & Bungalows, which is expected to have new units opening in 2024. While direct prices are increasing, resale prices are dropping due to a large amount of units on the market. Many DVC contracts can be purchased on the resale market for up to $100 per point less than direct pricing. Source: DVC News RunDisney Reduces Benefit for Volunteers Volunteers for the recent Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend were surprised when they received park tickets that were not valid until after 1:00 p.m. In the past, Disney would mail out full-day park tickets to each volunteer within 60 days after the conclusion of a race. However, this time they were handing them out as they were leaving the event. Source: WDW News Today My DVC Points is an awesome community of DVC members. Some people have described my new take on stuff as living a “full life”. Sure, ok maybe that's the case, but I would argue back – shouldn't everyone be living that way? See the thing is that this gal Amanda (and you can ask my friends back in the day) I was always full of adventure, always ready for a new project, travel, or anything that sets a fire in your soul.

Episode Summary: Today, we sit down with Brandon Stephenson, Co-Founder and Program Director at DIY Pools and Spas, a family-run company founded over four decades ago by Brandon's father Mike Stephenson. DIY was created to give families a better and more affordable alternative to hiring a pool company. They offer 3D design, plans, step-by-step coaching, and all the resources you need for “Do It Yourself” pool construction. Brandon has studied online business development with a focus in the E-Learning industry. His experience in course development, alongside his marketing expertise, have been instrumental in creating the DIY Homeowner Builder Program. Listen in as Brandon shares how DIY has revolutionized the pool industry, both for homeowners and subcontractors, through the company's ability to set appointments remotely. He explains how potential clients should prepare to work with DIY, including the benefits of having a plot map or site survey ready to present, and setting realistic expectations when settling on a preliminary yard design. Finally, Brandon gives his marketing and project management tips to take your business to the next level, whether you are a pool salesman or a subcontractor. Here's a Glimpse of What You'll Learn: 02:04 - The story behind DIY Pools and Spas 05:04 - What clients can expect from working with DIY 12:00 - What DIY does not do 14:17 - How DIY designs and consults remotely 19:28 - How subcontractors can work with DIY pools 20:27 - DIY's community and how they filter subcontractors 22:25 - Why DIY partnered with Hayward 25:03 - Pool professional success stories working with DIY 27:16 - DIY's white-labeling services and 3D video walkthroughs 32:54 - How to best prepare to work with DIY 37:27 - How DIY builds project management boards for owner 42:05 - Biggest challenges homeowners and professionals face 44:17 - Becoming a better pool salesman or subcontractor 48:08 - The power of before-and-after photos Sponsors: Leslie's Lyon Financial Connect with Guest: Website Homeowner Builder Program Contractors & Pool Builders Facebook Instagram LinkedIn Connect with Pool Chasers: Website Instagram Facebook Facebook Group Twitter YouTube Patreon Key Quotes from Episode: People who are doing owner builders are probably the worst customers for a pool company. While we do want to help people get their dream yard, we also have to regulate their dreams and bring them down to Earth. The biggest thing I teach as a pool salesman is making sure that the customer is heard and that they do most of the talking.
While multi-page apps (MPAs) seem like a new fixation for the developer community, they're pretty ancient news. If you were browsing the web in the 90s, you were likely visiting a multi-page app. Lucky for us, web tech improved, and made the entire experience of multi-page apps more appealing. One of the cons of MPAs is that they don't have preload and prefetch out of the box. Single-page apps (SPAs) on the other hand give you the power to decide how your site loads by loading all the resources for your current page and fetching resources for a page you might navigate to after. This might seem small but it makes a huge impact on your site. The good news is, more computing power gave way to better server-rendered technology, a huge win for multi-page apps. Unlike single-page apps (SPAs), multi-page apps parse very little JavaScript. That shaves seconds off your initial load which is no small feat. In this episode, Chuck and Robbie discuss the pros and cons of multi-page apps, the benefits and the distinction between prefetch vs preload, and the good old days on the internet. Key Takeaways [02:10] - A whiskey review - Wolves Signature Blend Special Release. [08:02] - Chuck and Robbie discuss multi-page apps. [13:46] - Advantages and disadvantages of multi-page apps. You were also on a multi-page app. It was just served by different technologies.” ~ Chuck Carpenter [10:56] - “Just HTML is actually pretty good, and it feels like people getting into the industry these days aren't getting exposed to it enough.” ~ Robbie Wagner [29:29] - “I'm sorry for all of our Ember listeners who are here to listen to me talk about good things about Ember, but the new add-on V2 stuff is some bullshit.” ~ Robbie Wagner Links Wolves Whiskey React Nuxt JS Java Script Astro Twitter StumbleUpon Pam The Office GitHub Orbit Preact Meta Ember Web Pack Chris Manson Embroider Null Vox Gateway Digg Reddit Tik Tok CNet IRS Download.com Tesla Boring Company Hulu American Horror Story SNL Kendrick Lamar Hellraiser Disney Disney Plus ESPN Dish College GameDay Paramount UEFA Champions League NBC Peacock English Premier League TBS USA Network TNT The Olympics Universal Fox AT&T Warner Brothers iPhone Dolby Connect with our hosts Robbie Wagner Chuck Carpenter Ship Shape Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts Whiskey Web and Whatnot Top-Tier, Full-Stack Software Consultants This show is brought to you by Ship Shape.
