Graham Nash -- of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young -- has a story about his friend, Neil Young, that has been almost too perfect to believe for nearly three decades. As the myth goes, Nash was at Young's ranch just south of San Francisco when Young asked him if he wanted to hear something. (That something would become Young's now famous 1972 "Harvest" album, which features the track "Heart of Gold.") Nash, of course, said yes and suggested going into Young's studio. That wasn't Young's plan. "He said, 'Get into the rowboat,'" Nash explained on NPR's Fresh Air in 2013. "I said, 'Get into the rowboat?' He said, 'Yeah, we’re going to go out into the middle of the lake.'" The two row out on the lake, with Nash assuming Young brought a cassette player and headphones with him. "Oh, no," said Nash on NPR. "He has his entire house as the left speaker and his entire barn as the right speaker. And I heard 'Harvest' coming out of these two incredibly large loud speakers louder than hell. It was unbelievable. Elliot Mazer, who produced 'Harvest,' came down to the shore of the lake and he shouted out to Neil, 'How was that, Neil?'" As Nash explained, "I swear to God, Neil Young shouted back, 'More barn!'"

Welcome to episode 155 of the EdTech Situation Room from November 13, 2019, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wesley Fryer (@wfryer) discussed YouTube's newly announced terms of service to apparently pave the way for more channel / account takedowns, the latest 2018-19 report "Why Rural Matters," and the importance of addressing the rural/urban political divides which separate many voters in western states like Montana and Oklahoma. The "Long Tail" and the wonderful "Craft With Me" YouTube channel of Gayle Agostinelli was mentioned. The new PBS Frontline special "In the Age of AI," Deepmind AI and its triumph (AlphaStar) over Starcraft 2 world class players, Android users who love the Apple Watch, and Apple's ongoing focus / market differentiation on privacy were discussed. Additional topics included the story of Carson King, College GameDay in Iowa, Venmo, and the raising of $1 million for a local children's hospital overshadowed by racist tweets from the past, as well as articles about the algorithmic darkness of YouTube. Google's forthcoming inclusion of "end of life" date information in ChromeOS settings, Jason's rebuttal to Phil Schiller's (of Apple) public criticisms of Chromebooks, and security articles including discussion of passwords and "security fatigue" and the importance of using a unique password for your Google account were also highlighted. Disinformation research from NPR's Fresh Air program, and resources highlighting both our "age of information disorder) (via @firstdraftnews) and the weaponization of Twitter to counter critics of Saudi Arabia were also discussed. Geeks of the Week included The Noun Project, Andrew Marantz's new book "Antisocial: Online Extremists, Techno-Utopians, and the Hijacking of the American Conversation," First Draft News' Informational Toolbox on Information Disorder, and an alarming video of MIT's Mini-Cheetah's rounded out the show. For health care policy wonks, for decades, perhaps there was no more recognizable name than "Uwe" — the Princeton professor who could explain health care's broken economics in a snappy soundbite. Uwe Reinhardt passed away in November 2017 but his new book is out this week. His wife and collaborator, Tsung-Mei (May) Cheng, sat down with POLITICO's Dan Diamond to discuss Reinhardt's life, work and lasting lessons. MENTIONED ON THE SHOW "Priced Out," Reinhardt's final book, was published this week. Reinhardt appeared on NPR's "Fresh Air" in 2009 to discuss the push for the Affordable Care Act. POLITICO Pulse Check's November 2017 reflections on Reinhardt. (Starts at the 45:38 mark.) "It's the prices, stupid," Reinhardt and colleagues declared in a 2003 Health Affairs paper on the United States' problem with high health costs. At Stat News, Gerard Anderson — a Johns Hopkins professor and co-author on the "prices, stupid" paper — reflects on Reinhardt's life and work.

Although I had hoped to make this interview the basis of a special Pride episode of Tatter, July was the soonest we could chat, and I am grateful to Father Jim for talking to me. Even though I'm an atheist, and even though I don't agree with him or the Catholic Church on all issues, I respect him and so I call him "Father" without hesitation. He's been a guest multiple times on the Colbert Report, and even earned the informal distinction of chaplain for the show. He's also appeared on NPR's Fresh Air, PBS's The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, and more. I feel lucky that Father Jim spent time with Tatter. We discussed LGBT issues for the most part, but also the Trump administration's treatment of refugees. Check it out. Did you know that the average American checks email within 6 seconds of arriving at work? Or that 75% of adults say they spend the entire day within an arm’s reach of their phones? Whether we want to admit it or not, the smartphone has become a critical extension of our lives. And it’s easy to understand why. Smartphone technology allows us a number of communication options including voice calls, text messages, video chat and instant messenger. We have immediate access to the information and are constantly connected to the web. And with the advancement of mobile technology, we can do our banking, shop online, check movie times, check our heart rates, edit photos, publish blog posts - anytime, anywhere. But what is this convenience really costing us? In this episode of the Tony Robbins Podcast, we’re talking with renowned social psychologist, Adam Alter. Adam is an Associate Professor of Marketing at New York University’s Stern School of Business. He is also the New York Times bestselling author of two books: Irresistible, which considers why so many people today are addicted to so many behaviors, from incessant smart phone use and internet use to video game playing and online shopping. And Drunk Tank Pink, which investigates how hidden forces in the world around us shape our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Adam has also written for the New York Times, New Yorker, Washington Post, Atlantic, WIRED, Slate, Huffington Post, and Popular Science, among other publications. He has shared his ideas on NPR's Fresh Air, at the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, and with dozens of companies, including Google, Microsoft, Anheuser Busch, Prudential, and Fidelity, and with several design and ad agencies around the world. His academic research focuses on judgment and decision-making and social psychology, with a particular interest in the sometimes surprising effects of subtle cues in the environment on human cognition and behavior. His research has been published widely in academic journals, and featured in dozens of TV, radio and print outlets around the world. Adam and Ana delve into the many ways our smartphones have become obsessive addictions. They look at how technology is precluding us from having a balanced life, and the serious implications this has on our social interactions with others and our capacity for compassion, empathy and connection. They discuss the role businesses play in perpetuating addictive behaviors by using strategic tactics when it comes to user experience. And they talk about what it would mean to withdraw and detox from screen experiences so that we can learn how to create a new sense of well-being in our lives. This episode is all about becoming more aware. Because the more informed we are about the addictive nature of technology and even of business practices that keep us coming back for more, the more able we are to demand more - from ourselves, from others, and from the companies that we support.
