Kevie, a co-host of TuxJam, talks about setting up a Raspberry Pi as a network wide ad and domain blocker using the Pi-hole project. Before starting this project you will need: A Raspberry Pi with Raspberry Pi OS installed and SSH enabled A basic knowledge of changing the settings on your router. I can't talk you through this as every router is different. Specifically you need to know how to give a device a static IP address and set a DNS server The ability to use SSH Once we have SSH'd into the Pi the first thing we should do is update it: sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y Then we need to install the Pi-hole software itself. We can do this with the command: curl -sSL https://install.pi-hole.net | bash This will start an installation wizard Once this has completed, it is recommended that you set a new admin password: pihole -a -p Exit the Pi and go to the admin web page by entering {the_IP_of_your_Pi}/admin in your browser's address bar. Click on Adlist on the left side and you should see 2 input boxes. The address is where we can enter our adlist, the comment box is purely optional. Go to firebog.net/ Choose one or two from each category, but make sure that these are active (the ones in green). Add the following two addresses to Adlist if you wish to block pornographic site: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Sinfonietta/hostfiles/master/pornography-hosts https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StevenBlack/hosts/master/alternates/porn/hosts For a list of specific types of sites to block then visit https://blocklistproject.github.io/Lists/ If using Cloudflare, you can add another pornography filter. Click on Settings on the left and then the DNS tab at the top. In Custom 1 (IPv4) enter the value 1.1.1.3, make sure that it is ticked. If there is a specific site that you want to block then click on Domains in the menu on the left and add the domain. If you want to block it, then click Blacklist or if Pi-hole is blocking a site that you want to access then click on Whitelist. Before we exit we must apply these changes or they will not take effect. On the left click on tools and then Update Gravity from the drop down menu. Press the Update button (it will take a couple of minutes to complete). You must do this every time that you make a change. Any time you add a new Adlist, Domain, Whitelist or Blacklist, it will not take effect until you do this. Go to your Router's homepage, set the DNS server to the IP address of the Pi. This means that all traffic will run through the Pi-hole. Don't forget to hit apply if necessary before exiting. One final task: reboot your router. This will force every device to reconnect and everything will be running through the Pi-hole.

From the lyricism of Martinů, we work back towards Janáček – another gifted Czech composer – and get to grips with the fairy-tale essence of The Cunning Little Vixen, Sinfonietta and the exultant Glagolitic Mass. Ar lieliem jaunumiem šo gadu sācis Valsts kamerorķestris „Sinfonietta Rīga” – par tā māksliniecisko partneri kļuvis pieprasītais vācu komponists, diriģents un klarnetists Jērgs Vidmanis (Jörg Widmann). Viņa inaugurācijas koncerti piektdien, 2.februārī, Liepājas koncertzālē „Lielais dzintars” un 3.februārī Lielajā ģildē Rīgā iezīmē jaunu posmu „Sinfoniettas” radošajā dzīvē, no kuras pamazām attālināsies ilggadējais mākslinieciskais vadītājs Normunds Šnē.

Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

Along with Antonin Dvorak and Bedrich Smetana, Leos Janacek is known as one of the three great Czech composers. He was born in Moravia, part of the Austrian Empire at the time, and became passionately interested in studying the folk music of his Moravian culture. After World War I, when the empire collapsed and Moravia became incorporated into the new country of Czechoslovakia, those nationalistic sentiments only increased, and Janacek was the perfect person to express those feelings through his music, seeing as his interest in the folk music of his homeland had been a lifelong passion for him. Enter the Sinfonietta, written in 1926, commissioned by none other than a Gymnastics festival! A sinfonietta is usually a smaller scale piece than a symphony, shorter, with a lighter orchestration and a lighter touch. But Janacek was always a rebel, and his Sinfonietta is a symphony in all but name, featuring an absolutely massive brass section that lustily performs the nationliaistic fanfares that Janacek gleefully adds  to the music. The Sinfonietta is an expression of patriotic love for Janacek's homeland, but it is also a piece that shows off so many of the things that make Janacek such a unique and underrated composer, his love of short fragmented melodies, his shocks and surprises, his innovative use of orchestration, and more. If you're not familiar with Janacek's music, the Sinfonietta is the perfect entry point, so come join us on this Patreon-sponsored episode!

Synopsis On today's date in 1950, the orchestra of the Musical Arts Society of La Jolla, California gave the premiere performance of this music by the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu. The "Sinfonietta La Jolla" was Martinu's response to the Society's call for a tuneful and approachable piece of new music for their chamber orchestra. Martinu modeled his 20th century work on the 18th century symphonies of Haydn, a composer he very much admired. In fact, in 1890, when Martinu was born, his native Bohemia was still a part of the Austria-Hungarian empire in which Haydn had lived and worked a hundred years earlier. Martinu's music blends the modernism of 20th century composers like Stravinsky with the rich 19th century tradition of Czech national composers like Dvořák – but Martinu's relations with his native land were anything but smooth. He was twice kicked out of the Prague Conservatory for his supposed lack of academic discipline, and instead established himself as a freelance composer in France and Switzerland. Then, just as his music began to receive some recognition and performances back in Prague, the Nazi invasion of World War II led to his works being banned. In 1941, Martinu settled in the United States, where his music was very well received. In 1948, Martinu returned briefly to Prague, but found the new Communist government there as distasteful to him as the Nazis. Martinu's "Sinfonietta La Jolla" was written shortly after he returned to the United States. Synopsis On today's date in 1968, a 72-year-old Italian-born American composer named Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco died in Beverley Hills. As a young man, Castelnuovo-Tedesco was already known as a rising composer, concert pianist, music critic and essayist. In 1939 he left Mussolini's Italy and came to America, and like a lot of European musicians of the time, he found work writing film scores for major Hollywood studios. Castelnuovo-Tedesco became an American citizen, and eventually taught at the Los Angeles Conservatory, where his pupils included many famous names from the next generation of film composers, including Jerry Goldsmith, Henry Mancini, Andre Previn, Nelson Riddle and John Williams. In addition to film scores, Castelnuovo-Tedesco composed a signifigant body of concert music, including concertos for the likes of Heifetz and Segovia. A number of Castelnuovo-Tedesco's works are directly related to his Jewish faith, including a choral work from 1947, entitled “Naomi and Ruth.”  The composer's mother was named Naomi, and he claimed the faithful Ruth in the Biblical story reminded him of his own wife, Clara. “In a certain sense,” he wrote, “it was really my symbolic autobiography, existing before I decided to write – to open my heart – in these pages.” Music Played in Today's Program Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895 - 1968) — Naomi and Ruth (St.Martin's Academy and Chorus; Sir Neville Marriner, cond.)
