This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit zeteo.comThroughout the course of Israel's brutal 10-month assault on Gaza, Ami Ayalon – the former head of Israel's Security Service, Shin-Bet, and the ex-commander of the Israeli Navy – has emerged as one of the Netanyahu government's chief critics, along with several other former Israeli military officials. In this wide-ranging interview for ‘Mehdi Unfiltered,' Ayalon tells Mehdi why he believes Benjamin Netanyahu and Itamar Ben-Gvir are a threat to Israeli democracy, why it is time to “stop the occupation,” and why he would fight against Israel if he were a Palestinian.“[Netanyahu] did everything in order to increase the power of Hamas and to make sure that Abu Mazen and the Palestinian Authority will not be able to create a unified government,” Ayalon says. “I think that too many Israelis do not understand that we shall not have security unless we shall stop the occupation. And we shall not have democracy unless we shall end the occupation.”As reports of Israeli torture and rape against detained Palestinians continue to emerge, Mehdi also confronts Ayalon over allegations of torture against Shin Bet on his watch - and the former security chief admits to Mehdi that he has “many regrets.”Watch the full interview, above, to see Mehdi debate Ayalon on whether or not Israel is committing war crimes in Gaza by bombing civilian targets. Pressure continues to mount for Israel and Hamas to make a deal. Negotiators have reportedly agreed on a “framework” and Hamas is “studying” a new proposal for a renewed truce in Gaza and the return of hostages. Ami Ayalon, the former head of Shin Bet, Israel's internal security service, has been pushing for negotiations and an eventual two-state solution. He joins the show to discuss. Israel has acquiesced to American polices to wind down of its all-out-offensive in the Gaza Strip, which is contradictory to Israeli strategies to achieve a full military victory over Hamas. This, according to Former Deputy Foreign Minister and ambassador to the United States Danny Ayalon. He told reporter Arieh O'Sullivan that Washington needed to be more decisive in containing Iran's nefarious activities. Ayalon said if the U.S. was humiliated or saw its interests harmed by Iran, then that could backlash politically against the Biden administration. Ayalon added that regardless of the US presidential elections, Israel would take actions to ensure the return of the tens of thousands of displaced Israelis to their homes around the Gaza Strip and along the Lebanon border. There is no end in sight to Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza. But even as fighting rages, questions abound about what happens when it finally stops. What can be salvaged from the wreckage? Will Hamas survive, if not as an organization than as an ideology? Who will govern Gaza? What type of leadership will be needed on both sides to broker any type of lasting peace? Former Israeli security chief Ami Ayalon says that today there is no clear picture in Israel about what happens on the day after—and that this is a grave mistake. Ayalon began his military service in 1963 and went on to lead Israel's navy and then Shin Bet, the country's internal security service. The task for Israel, he argues, is not just addressing the security failures that preceded October 7, but offering a political future that both Israelis and Palestinians will support. Ami Ayalon is the former head of the Shin Bet, Israel's internal intelligence agency, and former commander of the Israeli navy. After his retirement from the Shin Bet, Ayalon served as a member of the Knesset and co-founded the grassroots peace initiative The People's Voice with Palestinian philosopher Sari Nusseibeh. He is the author, with Anthony David, of Friendly Fire: How Israel Became Its Own Worst Enemy and the Hope for Its Future. On the 75th anniversary of Israel's founding, Yascha Mounk and Ami Ayalon discuss the roots of today's democratic crisis in the country; lessons from Ayalon's lifelong career in Israel's defense and intelligence communities; and why Palestinian hope is an Israeli security asset. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Editor David Horovitz and diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman join host Amanda Borschel-Dan in today's episode from our Jerusalem office. We have a lot to discuss as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition is threatening to break apart and today's “day of disruption”. Lazar is here with better relations with the EU and what Israel can do to help get Ukrainian children back. The protest movement against the government's judicial overhaul is staging another “Day of Disruption,” with acts of civil disobedience and road closures around the country. The Knesset is now in session and the judicial overhaul legislation package is still frozen. Horovitz weighs in on whether it's possible that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu make keep it frozen indefinitely, similar to what happened with the Western Wall compromise. The stability of the coalition is being threatened by its members. We hear why National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Housing and Construction Minister Yitzhak Golknopf are making waves right now. Deputy speaker of Kyiv's parliament Olena Kondratiuk was in Israel on Monday to ask for Israel's help in the release of tens of thousands of Ukrainian children taken illegally from their homes to Russia. Berman explains what aid she is requesting and what the country can do. Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and the European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell met in Brussels on Tuesday to bury the hatchet after a period of strained relations with the EU. Why now? Horovitz, just back from London, gives some color ahead of Saturday's coronation of King Charles. Discussed articles include: Protesters block Ayalon highway, other roads in ‘day of disruption' against overhaul Likud: If Ben Gvir doesn't like how Netanyahu runs government, he can leave Government will ‘fall apart' without law on Haredi military exemption, warns minister EU's Borrell wins over foreign minister during long one-on-one chat Foreign Minister Cohen buries hatchet with EU foreign policy czar Borrell Help us get our kids back from Russia, urges senior Ukraine lawmaker visiting Israel Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Reporter Carrie Keller-Lynn and arts and culture editor Jessica Steinberg join host Raoul Wootliff on today's podcast. She also talks about the passport challenges facing Israelis born abroad, and the complications wrought by the pandemic when they want to come 'home' to visit. Steinberg describes a new gallery installed at the iconic Jerusalem cafe Tmol Shilshom, the first exhibit featuring photos of the European-style cafes opened in Jerusalem in the Mandate era. Please join host Amir Oren for the first of a two-part interview with Major General (Ret.) Shachar Ayalon, who retired from Israel’s National Police as Deputy Commissioner General, with vast experience in public security, law and order. Ayalon has been a founding-member of the elite SWAT team YAMAM, trained in hostage situations and other sensitive operations. He was in charge of explosive sectors of Jerusalem and the West Bank and commanded the Tel Aviv district. After leaving the police, he was tasked with rebuilding the national Fire and Rescue service, then with heading the Israel Railway system. Few senior uniformed or civil servants have Commissioner Ayalon’s unique point of view on Israel’s home front challenges. Nicole Morse is the Director of Community Initiatives for United Way of Gloucester County in New Jersey. As an experienced student affairs professional and lifetime member of Delta Gamma, Nicole wanted to do a takeover of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast for episode #150, and we were glad to let her do so. The guest for the 16th episode is Yuval Ayalon, a Performing Artist, Handbalancer, Acrobat - and a Gymnast. Yuval is a life long physical practitioner. A man, who dedicates his life for the never ending journey of refining his skills and knowledge of his craft. He came into my attention through a common friend who made a connection between us. I hosted him at my apartment in Vienna while he was teaching one of his incredible Handstand seminars. I had a real pleasure to meet such a dedicated person, that through hard work, has managed to achieved such incredible depth of his art. And alongside with his skills and expertise, remained very humble, accessible and a kind person. I invited him to the podcast to explore together how the physically-demanding careers can affect the sense of identity, how fatherhood and the relation to children shapes us, what is the connection between external practices and inner processes and more. It was such a great pleasure to talk to him and I hope you will find this conversation enriching. This episode is our black history month episode where we cover come true crime cases that happened not too long ago but, like most black history, isn't taught or widely known. Also, I am sorry about my audio sounding static im using my traveling mike while ive been on this recently short deployment, and it gave me a lot of bad feedback. I tried to clean it up as much as possible. I'll be back home soon and back to my regular mic.
