“Sol!”, comandou Yoshua, “permaneça em Giv'on; Lua! No Vale de Ayalon!” (Yoshua 10:12).

Israel has become known internationally as the ‘start-up nation' – one of the most successful international hi-tech hubs. The Ayalon Institute – just outside of Rehovot – may have possessed the world's only start-up laundry – an underground factory designed to produce the crucial bullets needed by the pre-state and early Israel to fight the 1948 War of Independence. How do you keep such an operation a secret? How did the Ayalon Institute reflect something about the ethos of pre-state Israel? And does some of that same ethos survive today? In recent days, the Netanyahu government has doubled down on its efforts to consolidate its control and ramp up its military operations in Gaza and Lebanon. Following the firing of the former director of Shin Bet, an unprecedented decision in Israel's history, the government has begun the more complicated process of terminating the attorney general, as well as changing the process by which judges are appointed.  A ferocious military operation in Gaza that has taken a terrible toll on Palestinian civilians and recent anti-Hamas demonstrations have resulted in renewed negotiations on a new hostage release for ceasefire agreement. And for the first time since the Israeli-Hezbollah ceasefire agreement in November 2024, rockets launched against northern Israel triggered response strikes in the Beirut suburbs.  What does the future hold for Gaza and any longer-term agreement? Will the Netanyahu government succeed in what appears to be a renewal of the 2023 effort to increase its power and undermine Israel's judiciary? What about any hopes for a regional peace accord encompassing Palestinians and Saudi Arabia? Join Aaron David Miller as he engages former Shin Bet director Ami Ayalon on these and other issues on the next Carnegie Connects.

The Ottomans, according to Yaron, were interested in stability - economic and otherwise. Minorities, with their additional taxes, would bring more financial benefits. Many were merchants who would pay higher taxes. With this premise, we discussed the world of the Ottoman Jews as one of creating community and society. More than a year into the Israel-Hamas war, the Middle East remains mired in conflict. The war in Gaza drags on with no end in sight; the West Bank continues to seethe; the collapse of the Assad regime has activated Israeli forces along the Syrian border; and while a cease-fire deal has calmed the Israel-Lebanon border, the possibility of a serious escalation between Israel and Iran remains all too real. Meanwhile, uncertainties about U.S. policy abound as the Biden Administration gives way to one headed by President Donald Trump. Will Israel be able to translate its recent military wins into stable security and political arrangements? What does the future hold for the hostages and the people of Gaza? Is there a diplomatic off-ramp that might preempt or prevent an Iran-Israel confrontation? And what of the future of Iran's nuclear program?  Join Aaron David Miller as he sits down with Ami Ayalon, the former head of Shin Bet, and Efraim Halevy, the former head of Mossad, to discuss these and other issues on Carnegie Connects.

And we shall not have democracy unless we shall end the occupation.”As reports of Israeli torture and rape against detained Palestinians continue to emerge, Mehdi also confronts Ayalon over allegations of torture against Shin Bet on his watch - and the former security chief admits to Mehdi that he has “many regrets.”Watch the full interview, above, to see Mehdi debate Ayalon on whether or not Israel is committing war crimes in Gaza by bombing civilian targets. Israel has acquiesced to American polices to wind down of its all-out-offensive in the Gaza Strip, which is contradictory to Israeli strategies to achieve a full military victory over Hamas. This, according to Former Deputy Foreign Minister and ambassador to the United States Danny Ayalon. He told reporter Arieh O'Sullivan that Washington needed to be more decisive in containing Iran's nefarious activities. Ayalon said if the U.S. was humiliated or saw its interests harmed by Iran, then that could backlash politically against the Biden administration. Ayalon added that regardless of the US presidential elections, Israel would take actions to ensure the return of the tens of thousands of displaced Israelis to their homes around the Gaza Strip and along the Lebanon border. There is no end in sight to Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza. But even as fighting rages, questions abound about what happens when it finally stops. What can be salvaged from the wreckage? Will Hamas survive, if not as an organization than as an ideology? Who will govern Gaza? What type of leadership will be needed on both sides to broker any type of lasting peace? Former Israeli security chief Ami Ayalon says that today there is no clear picture in Israel about what happens on the day after—and that this is a grave mistake. Ayalon began his military service in 1963 and went on to lead Israel's navy and then Shin Bet, the country's internal security service. The task for Israel, he argues, is not just addressing the security failures that preceded October 7, but offering a political future that both Israelis and Palestinians will support. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Editor David Horovitz and diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman join host Amanda Borschel-Dan in today's episode from our Jerusalem office. We have a lot to discuss as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition is threatening to break apart and today's “day of disruption”. Lazar is here with better relations with the EU and what Israel can do to help get Ukrainian children back. The protest movement against the government's judicial overhaul is staging another “Day of Disruption,” with acts of civil disobedience and road closures around the country. The Knesset is now in session and the judicial overhaul legislation package is still frozen. Horovitz weighs in on whether it's possible that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu make keep it frozen indefinitely, similar to what happened with the Western Wall compromise. The stability of the coalition is being threatened by its members. We hear why National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Housing and Construction Minister Yitzhak Golknopf are making waves right now. Deputy speaker of Kyiv's parliament Olena Kondratiuk was in Israel on Monday to ask for Israel's help in the release of tens of thousands of Ukrainian children taken illegally from their homes to Russia. Berman explains what aid she is requesting and what the country can do. Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and the European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell met in Brussels on Tuesday to bury the hatchet after a period of strained relations with the EU. Why now? Horovitz, just back from London, gives some color ahead of Saturday's coronation of King Charles. Discussed articles include: Protesters block Ayalon highway, other roads in ‘day of disruption' against overhaul Likud: If Ben Gvir doesn't like how Netanyahu runs government, he can leave Government will ‘fall apart' without law on Haredi military exemption, warns minister EU's Borrell wins over foreign minister during long one-on-one chat Foreign Minister Cohen buries hatchet with EU foreign policy czar Borrell Help us get our kids back from Russia, urges senior Ukraine lawmaker visiting Israel Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East, and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Reporter Carrie Keller-Lynn and arts and culture editor Jessica Steinberg join host Raoul Wootliff on today's podcast. Keller-Lynn discusses her recent investigative piece about Israel's traffic woes, looking at the number of cars and drivers on the road, and the fact that Israelis seem to prefer their cars to public transportation. She also talks about the passport challenges facing Israelis born abroad, and the complications wrought by the pandemic when they want to come 'home' to visit. Steinberg describes a new gallery installed at the iconic Jerusalem cafe Tmol Shilshom, the first exhibit featuring photos of the European-style cafes opened in Jerusalem in the Mandate era. She also speaks about the new Karon theater complex, an expanded version of the Train Theater created in Jerusalem's Liberty Bell Park back in the 1980s. Discussed articles include: It's the errands, not the commute: What's really driving Israel's traffic crisis Shaked eases some requirements to register Israeli children born abroad Jerusalem's Train Theater takes a short ride to a new playhouse Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts.
