In this shiur, delivered in Aish HaTorah to the Chizuk Mission, Rav Burg explains the inner meaning of Matan Torah. At Matan Torah there was no echo because all of the world revealed itself to be an expression of the Dvar Hashem. Though the world reverted back to its previous state, it years to be its authentic self. Our mission is to reveal the true essence of everything in this world. Though the world in its fragmented state clings to us in a way that we feel drags us down, it does so because it yearns to be connected to Hashem. This is true not only of the material world but even of the broken parts of ourselves.

Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

The sefer Ki Ata Imadi writes, a man came over to him one year a few days after Purim with a complaint. He said he had some issues with one of his children and after he learned all about the segulot of the day of Purim, he spent hours in heartfelt tefila , both on Ta'anit Esther and on Purim. He shed tears and begged Hashem to fix the problems with his child. Now, a few days later, he didn't see any change. "If Hashem answers everyone who asks Him on Purim, why wasn't I answered?" he asked. The rabbi thought about it and then told him, "You used the day of Purim properly. You prayed the way you are supposed to. You believed Hashem was going to help. There is no question that you were helped, but that doesn't mean you will necessarily see the results immediately." The rabbi gave him a mashal . When a child tells his father on the night of the Seder, "I'll give you the afikoman for a bicycle," and the father agrees, that doesn't mean the child is going to have a bicycle the next day. The father might feel that waiting a few months until the summer would be more beneficial for his child to have the bike then. The child accomplished on the night of the Seder, but it doesn't necessarily mean he's going to see the immediate results of that accomplishment. So, too, a person's tefillah on Purim for sure accomplished, but that doesn't mean that he'll necessarily see those results right away. The wheels might be in motion, things are happening behind the scenes, we're just not able to see them. There are so many things which happen that we can't see. Whenever we do a mitzvah or learn a word of Torah, so much goes on in the spiritual realms. Our souls become purified and blessings come down from Shamayim . We don't know which blessings stem from which mitzvah. We don't see when those blessings are being produced, but we know mitzvot produce goodness. We trust that Hashem knows how to apply them the way He sees fit. There are individuals with so much emunah. They know when they act l'shem Shamayim Hashem is proud of them and brings blessing to their efforts. They are so confident about it that they are even willing to act upon that emunah. Rabbi Noach Weinberg, z"l , the founder of Aish HaTorah, once met a Jew at the Kotel who was very distanced from Torah and mitzvot. He spoke to him for a while and then he invited him to his home to eat. The young man was very impressed with what the Rabbi was saying and he actually agreed to come learn in his yeshiva for some time. The boy was very smart and quickly advanced in his learning. After two solid weeks there, he told the Rabbi, "Thank you very much, butI have to leave now." The Rabbi asked why, since he was doing so well. The young man said, "I'm a master chess player and I have to go to play in the World Chess Championship that is being held in America." The Rabbi knew once this boy left he was never returning. He felt bad for him, for his neshama , not to mention that he had so much potential. At that moment, Rabbi Weinberg made a tefila to Hashem to please put the words in his mouth that could convince this boy to stay. Then the Rabbi got an idea. He told the boy, "Before you go, let me make you a deal. I will play you one game of chess. If you win the game, I'll pay for your flight to America. But if I win, then you agree to stay here and learn more." The boy happily agreed and shook the Rabbi's hand on it. They sat and played and, astonishingly, the Rabbi beat this world expert in chess. The boy had no choice but to stay and, baruch Hashem, he eventually grew to become a true ben Torah . Some months after that, the boy asked the Rabbi a question. He said, "I agreed to the chess game because I was confident I would beat you, but please tell me, what were you thinking? How could you make a deal like that, knowing how good I was?" The Rabbi replied, "I wanted more than anything for you to continue your growth in Torah and mitzvot and get closer to Hashem. I had no ulterior motives. I was pure. So I prayed to Hashem to help me and I believe that He put that thought in my brain to offer you the chess match. I knew when someone is l'shem Shamayim , Hashem gives them extraordinary help. That having been said, I relied on Hashem to move my fingers and tell me where to put the pieces so I could defeat you. And that's what happened." Hashem helps us all the time. We are not always able to see it clearly. We should never second guess our emunah. Things are happening behind the scenes. Hashem is answering our tefilot and He is leading us in the directions that we need to go in.

For over two years, I, Chaz Volk, successfully released one episode of Jewish content per week. Each episode averaged 30 minutes, offering Torah insights and glimpses into Jewish diasporic cultures. This endeavor was nothing less than a passion project—one that I balanced alongside my day-to-day work life. My primary goal was to learn. Coming from a conservative/secular Jewish background, my knowledge was limited. It still is, humbly speaking. However, I am proud to say that I have grown tremendously since the show's inception. I write this with a deep sense of care and pride, knowing how far I've come from my initial understanding. The show opened doors, connecting me with rabbis, coaches, actors, professionals, musicians, and content creators. I had the unique opportunity to learn from so many incredible voices, exploring the theology of Judaism through its many lenses. The show itself achieved notable success, ranking as the 17th-largest Jewish podcast in the world from 2023 to the present. Occasionally, I even received public recognition for my work. Despite not considering myself a thought leader (seriously, I've only ever been a student), I was able to foster a community. The learning experience was so personally fulfilling that it ultimately inspired me to study Torah full-time at Aish HaTorah, embracing the rich Jewish tradition of yeshiva. While in Israel, I had the honor of recording in-person interviews at a studio in the Old City. Unfortunately, that studio shut down, forcing my show into an unexpected hiatus. But as Hashem would have it (because there's no such thing as luck—only Hashem), I was invited to speak for Aish's "Gesher" program. I was granted one-time access to a rabbi's camera and microphone equipment, seizing the opportunity to publicly share my story. In my speech, I revealed the two other reasons I created this show: To make it clear, once and for all, that there is NO SUCH THING AS A BAD JEW Revenge Why revenge? Tune in to find out. 00:00 Parshas Mishpatim 06:52 Historical Context of Slavery Laws 10:12 Hebrews' Mindset  13:52 A Shameful Quarrel 16:23 Final Moments 18:34 Variations of Judaism 24:33 The Dream 25:53 Disconnection 30:32 THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BAD JEW 34:08 Divine Justice 34:40 A Revenge Story About Chaz Volk: Chaz Volk grew up in Thousand Oaks, California, where he began his Torah studies until becoming Bar Mitzvah at Temple Etz Chaim. From a young age, he was keenly aware of his uniqueness and often found himself the token Jew in non-Jewish settings. In middle school, Chaz experienced his first encounter with antisemitism—an experience that, rather than distancing him from his heritage, only strengthened his connection to his Jewish identity. Later, he attended San Francisco State University, where he became deeply involved with SF Hillel as both a volunteer and an intern. From early on, he recognized the university's social climate and its stance on Jews and Zionism. Chaz eventually became the lead plaintiff in the class-action lawsuit Volk v. CSU Board of Trustees—a case that he and his legal representation won. Since then, he has proudly embraced his Jewish identity and actively participated in Jewish communities across Southern California. Most recently, Chaz experienced an emotional awakening during an organized trip to Israel. There, he adopted new Jewish practices that remain an integral part of his life today. Currently, he is a volunteer and frequent participant in Aish HaTorah's programming. Through this show, he aims to promote Aish's programs, events, and resources while sharing valuable Jewish teachings. Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

In this week's parasha , Hashem tells Moshe צו את אהרון ואת בניו לאמר, and Rashi writes, אין צו אלא לשון זירוז. Moshe was told by Hashem to inspire and encourage the Kohanim regarding their work with the korban olah . Rabbi Reuven Elbaz in his sefer Moshcheni Acharecha writes that in life Hashem gives everybody moments of encouragement and inspiration, and it is the job of man to grab those moments and use them to elevate himself spiritually and get closer to Hashem. Rav Yechezkel Levenstein the great mashgiach of Ponevezh who has inspired tens of thousands of people with his sefarim entitled Ohr Yechezkel once told a student of his that he attributed all of his spiritual gains to one moment of inspiration which he grabbed and kept with him for the rest of his life. It was during a speech that he heard from the great Mashgiach from Mir, Reb Yerucham Levovitz. In that speech, he learned what it means to feel Hashem's presence at all times and see Him in everything that he does and encounters. Everybody experiences hashgachat Hashem in their own lives. Sometimes they are able to see it more than others. One of the reasons Hashem allows us to see His hand clearly at those times is because He is giving us moments of inspiration. The wise man captures the moment and etches it in his brain for life, utilizing it to get closer to Hashem. And then, even during the trying moments when his resolve is being tested, he doesn't budge from his emunah because he knows Hashem is with him. Rabbi Elbaz gave a parable to crystallize the point. If a man was lost and found himself in a dark forest with wild animals lurking, the darkness being so thick he could barely see a foot in front of him. He has no idea how to escape, but he knows he has to do it quickly before he is caught by an animal. Then, all of a sudden, a bolt of lightning flashes. The entire forest lights up. The smart man will make it a point to capture that image and then use it to navigate his way out of there. So too it is in life. Hashem gives everyone moments of clarity. It is up to us to utilize them to help ourselves navigate through life properly. Everyone experiences hashgacha pratit . It doesn't necessarily have to be with big things. But when those moments happen, Hashem is talking to us. Sometimes they're more clear than others. Dr. Meir Wikler told a story about a man, Meyer Isakov, and his wife who lived in Har Nof. They both had the most wonderful middot and their home was always open to taking guests in. Although they didn't have so much money, they managed to always care for the people who came through their doors. A baal teshuva named Zev Eisner became inspired at Aish HaTorah and left his secular life in California to learn in that yeshiva in Israel. He was very shy and never found peace when going to other people's homes for meals, until he met Meyer and his wife. He felt so comfortable there, he made them his go-to home. The one Shabbat a month he left yeshiva, he would always go eat by them. Baruch Hashem, after nine long years, Meyer and his wife were blessed with their first child. Their joy knew no bounds. Eventually, they moved the baby into a crib in the other room in their apartment. It was a few weeks before Sukkot and Zev was eating over them for Shabbat. Before he left, he asked if he could stay by them for the entire holiday of Sukkot as his yeshiva was going to be closed. "Of course," they answered immediately, even though there was no room in the apartment for him to sleep. Since they were going to sleep in the sukkah anyway, it wouldn't be a problem. The only problem was they didn't have any extra mattresses for him to sleep on and they couldn't really afford to buy one either. They were hoping over the next couple of weeks they would be able to borrow one. However, as Yom Tov approached, they had not been successful in finding one. Meyer gave his wife chizuk saying, not to worry, they were doing ratzon Hashem and he was sure Hashem would help. His wife told him, "I wish I had your bitachon . You know, this mattress is not the only thing we need. Our baby is getting bigger and soon he is going to need a highchair." "I wish I could afford one," replied Meyer. "But you know how impossible it is for us to afford something that expensive now. We could still manage without it and when we really need it, Hashem will provide it." The next day was Erev Sukkot. Even Meyer felt his emunah being tested. He still had no bed for Zev who would be arriving in a few hours. Two hours later, the bell rang. It was Shia who lived down the block. He needed a favor, he also had a new baby in the house and a lot of guests coming over. He needed to make room for them. He said there were a couple of things he wasn't going to need for a while, but he didn't want to sell them. So he was wondering if Meyer had any storage space for them. "What were they?" A folding bed and a highchair. The hashgacha of Hashem was amazing – sending them exactly what they needed at the exact moment they needed it. For Meyer and his wife, that was a moment of clarity, a clear indication Hashem was with them, a moment they would never forget. If we use the moments of inspiration Hashem gives us, we'll be able to grow and become the people we're meant to become. Shabbat Shalom.

Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

Throughout the ages, Hashem has performed numerous miracles to save us from harm. And this has convinced us that if the time calls for it, Hashem could easily come and perform another miracle. But Hashem's involvement in our lives is not limited to miraculous events. Purim is the holiday that teaches us that we don't need an open miracle to see Hashem's involvement in our lives. Every single little thing that takes place in the world at large and in each individual's life is all orchestrated by Hashem and only Hashem. In the third year of Achashverosh's reign, his wife Vashti refused to listen to him and even shamed him with disparaging words. That brought about Achashverosh to have her killed, which at that time seemed like just an isolated occurrence. It was only later that we saw that it was all set up by Hashem as part of His master plan to bring Esther into the palace and eventually save the Jews from Haman. Because Esther went into the palace, Mordechai was there often. And because he was there, he overheard Bigtan and Teresh plotting to kill the king and reported them, thereby saving Achashverosh's life. Then years later, on the very same night that Haman prepared a gallows to hang Mordechai, Achashverosh couldn't sleep and asked for his book of chronicles to be read to him. And out of everything in that book, the one thing that he was told about was how Mordechai saved his life. Later on, Haman fell on the bed where Esther was, just as the king entered the room, which caused him to hang Haman on the very same gallows that he made for Mordechai. Every event happened naturally, with no revealed Yad Hashem. In fact, Megilat Eshter is one of the only sefarim in all of Tanach that does not have Hashem's name mentioned even once. That's to teach us that although Hashem doesn't always perform open miracles, He is constantly with us, behind the scenes, involved in everything that happens all the time. The ways of Hashem are truly amazing. If we look back and connect the dots in our own lives, we'll see how Hashem was setting up events way before we could have possibly understood their significance. But after the picture is painted, we are left in awe, realizing that what we thought was a haphazard event was really the Yad Hashem . Rabbi Yoel Gold related a story that a girl named Chana told him about herself a few years ago. She was 23 years old at the time. She was in Israel, staying in Har Nof, and one day she wasn't feeling well. Her friend, who knew she was there, called to ask her for a favor. She was working on a project for a certain company and needed a picture of the Har HaBayit from a certain angle, standing on Har HaZetim. Although Chana wasn't feeling well, she really wanted to help her friend. So she pushed herself and took a bus to Sha'ar Shechem, and then from there she was going to take another bus to Har HaZetim. Her head was spinning and she was nauseous, so she wasn't paying careful attention to details. She saw a blue and white bus and got on, not realizing it was an Arab bus. She sat down and fell asleep, and woke up 25 minutes later, seeing that she missed her stop. She got off the bus, went across the street to catch another bus back. But she didn't realize she was in Arab territory and there were no buses going back. It was the first night of Ramadan, and the streets were empty, because everyone was inside breaking their fast. She started walking and saw a settlement, and that's when she realized she was in Arab territory. She quickly took out her phone, but saw that it was out of battery. She was in a lot of trouble and didn't know what to do next. She started saying Tehillim and asked Hashem for help. She decided to knock on the door of a home that looked well kept with a nice lawn, hoping it wasn't Arabs. She was going to present herself as a pro-Palestinian UCLA student that needed to write a paper on the Palestinians. She knocked on the door, and a young woman, in her full Arab garb, answered the door. She took one look at her and said, “Chana, is that you?” Chana was caught off guard, shocked at what was happening. The young woman hugged Chana, then brought her into the house and showed her the thank you card that she sent her six months before. That's when Chana remembered how six months before she ran a program for Aish HaTorah at the King Solomon Hotel. And at that time, she accepted upon herself to thank every single person on the hotel staff who helped out. On the last day, this Palestinian girl showed up and was running the coffee station. Chana made it a point to go over and talk to her and make conversation, and then added her to the list of thank you cards she was going to make, which turned out to be over fifty. Now, when Chana's life was at risk, this is the home she found herself in front of. Inside that house, there were other people who worked in the hotel that day, who also got thank you cards from Chana and were so appreciative to her. They took her back to her house, and all was well. The hashgacha of Hashem here was truly amazing. Everything we do is part of a larger picture, and sometimes Hashem shows us a glimpse of how He is connecting all the dots of our lives.

There are times during the year that we get extra siyata d'Shamaya in certain areas. On Hanukkah, we are able to access a special spiritual energy to help us get closer to Hashem. At the time of the Hanukkah miracle, the Jewish People risked their lives to fight the Greeks. What were they fighting for? Their lives were not at risk. They were fighting to be able to follow Torah and mitzvot and serve Hashem properly. When Hashem saw how much His People yearned for His Torah, that is when He performed great miracles for them, enabling them to defeat the Greek army. He continued performing more miracles for them, enabling them to light the Menorah for eight days with pure olive oil. Today when we light our Hanukkah candles, they radiate kedusha . Just looking at the flames can purify a person's eyes. While the candles are burning, it's an עת רצון to pray, especially for help with Torah and mitzvot. I read a story of a representative from a yeshiva in Yerushalayim , whom we'll call Yehuda, who traveled abroad to collect much needed funds for that yeshiva. In one particular city he didn't know anybody and didn't even know where to go. He stopped and made a tefila to Hashem, asking Him to help. A few minutes later, a horse and buggy passed by him with a distinguished gentleman inside. It was a religious man and he asked Yehuda if he needed something. Yehuda told him he was there from Israel collecting and he explained how dire the situation was. The distinguished gentleman invited Yehuda to his luxurious home and gave him a nice sum of money. While he was there, Yehuda noticed amongst very expensive gold and silver vessels on display, a broken jug that used to contain oil. He asked the man why a broken jug would be on display there. The man told him the story behind it. He said when he was younger he veered off the path of Torah and mitzvot and completely abandoned the religion. He looked and acted no different than a goy . One day, he was walking in the street and he saw a little boy crying. He asked the boy what was wrong, and the boy replied that his father gave him money to buy a jug of oil to light the menorah but it fell out of his hands and broke. They were very poor and he wouldn't have enough money to get another one. The man said he felt bad for that boy. He took out money, gave it to him and said, “Go get more.” After he parted ways with that boy, he said to himself, “A little boy cried because he was going to miss out on oil for Hanukkah and I, who have so much, don't even care that I don't do any mitzvot?” He went back and he picked up that broken jug. He took this lesson to heart and started coming back to Torah and mitzvot from it. He then said, “Baruch Hashem, today I am fully shomer Torah and mitzvot and I keep that broken jug of oil on display to remind myself of how Hashem inspired me to come back to Him.” Every Jew has a neshama that desires Torah and mitzvot and all it takes is a little spark to ignite it. A man told me, 30 years ago he had no connection to Torah and mitzvot. Aish HaTorah opened a small branch in his city and they put an ad in a newspaper saying they were offering a Lunch and Learn – a whole spread of deli and a class from a rabbi. The man said he really did not have any interest in the class, but he loved deli. And so, he left work on his lunch break to go there. The rabbi's words at the class made so much sense to him and he was excited to be invited back the following week for another Lunch and Learn. He kept going every week until he became fully observant. Today, this man has religious children and grandchildren and spends his days trying to bring other Jews closer to Hashem. Every Jew wants to be close to Hashem, even the most distant ones. We just need to bring it out of them properly. On Hanukkah, there is an extra siyata d'Shamaya to accomplish it.

Nitzotzos: Thoughts to keep your spark alive

This shiur, delivered in Aish HaTorah to the Go Inspire Chizzuk Mission, deals with living a life of Emunah in action. The knowledge that our soul is infinite gives us a deep sense of self, the capacity to show up authentically, loyalty, joy and love.
