Watch more on patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thekatiehalpershow Katie is joined by Maura Finkelstein a tenured Jewish professor of Anthropology at Muhlenberg College fired over an Instragram repost about Zionism. Then Katie talks to Rami Younis, a Palestinian writer, journalist, activist and co-director of "Lyd," a science fiction documentary he co-directed about the once-thriving Palestinian city of Lyd. Rami reacts to Israel's recent decision to ban the film. Maura Finkelstein is a writer, ethnographer, and associate professor of anthropology. She is the author of The Archive of Loss: Lively Ruination in Mill Land Mumbai, published by Duke University Press in 2019. Her writing has also been published in Anthological Quarterly, City and Society, Cultural Anthropology, Anthropology Now, Post45, Electric Literature, Allegra Lab, Red Pepper Magazine, The Markaz Review, the Scottish Left Review, Mondoweiss, and Al Jazeera. She has been nominated for a Pushcart (2021), was a finalist for the Witness literary award (2022), was a Tin House Scholar (2023), and was recently the recipient of the 2024 New Directions Award from the General Anthropology Division (GAD) of the American Anthropological Association. Rami Younis is a Palestinian filmmaker, writer, journalist and activist from Lyd. He was a 2019-20 Fellow at the Harvard Divinity School. As a journalist, he mainly wrote for the online magazine +972 and served as both writer and editor of its Hebrew sister site, “local call”, a journalistic project he co-founded, designed to challenge Israeli mainstream journalism outlets. Rami served as a parliamentary consultant and media spokesperson for Palestinian member of Knesset (Israeli parliament) Haneen Zoabi. Rami is also co-founder and manager of the first ever “Palestine Music Expo”: an event that connects local Palestinian music scene to the world wide industry. Younis was the host of the Arabic-language daily news show, “On the Other Hand." Lyd is a feature-length, sci-fi documentary that shares multiple pasts, presents, and futures of the city of Lyd in Palestine/Israel. From the perspective of the city herself, voiced by Palestinian actress Maisa Abd Elhadi, the viewer is guided through the lifespan of a five-thousand-year-old city and its residents. Lyd was once a thriving Palestinian city with a rich history. In 636AD, It was even considered the first capital of Palestine. When the State of Israel was founded in 1948, Lyd became an Israeli city, and in the process, hundreds of Lyd's Palestinian residents were massacred by Israeli forces, and most of the city's 50,000 Palestinian residents were exiled. Today, the city has a Jewish Israeli majority and a Palestinian minority and is disinvested and divided by racism and violence. For Palestinians, Lyd's story is a painful and tragic fall from grace, which is why the film dares to ask the question: what would the city be like had the Israeli occupation of Lyd never happened? **Please support The Katie Halper Show ** For bonus content, exclusive interviews, to support independent media & to help make this program possible, please join us on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/thekatiehalpershow Get your Katie Halper Show Merch here! https://katiehalper.myspreadshop.com/all Follow Katie on Twitter: @kthalps
The upcoming budget is thought likely to include changes - increases - to tax breaks on pensions and a rise in inheritance tax thresholds. We both agree that helping millionaire pensioners with even more tax breaks is nuts. But we disagree sharply about the wisdom of inheritance taxes. These are incredibly emotive topics. As our discussion shows! The Other Hand always welcomes feedback - good, bad or indifferent. We share a particularly interesting perspective from one listener. Ireland's population continues to soar. The other day we received the longest email ever sent to The Other Hand. It was a thoughtful point-by-point critique of pretty much everything we have said about Trump, Biden and the state of American politics. We get lots of emails and comments and Tweets etc. We try to reply respectfully to as many as we can. Indeed, we encourage the conversation. In replying to this email we attempt something different: the salient points are given voice by an AI robot. A pretty simple and cheap one, admittedly, but it is an experiment, let us know what you think. So, a first for The Other Hand: in conversation with a robot. In 17 years of The Listening Post, we have never seen a story anything like Israel's war on Gaza.It has been a turning point for the world order as we know it and its media ecosystem – which is why, since October 7, we have covered nothing else.In this special edition, we compiled our reporting on the Gaza war over the past 12 weeks. The extent of the brutality, a genocide unfolding in plain sight; the sheer volume of disinformation, designed to defend the indefensible; and the complicity of so many Western news outlets – repeatedly exposed for failing to question Israeli propaganda, then spreading it.Contributors:Ariella Aïsha Azoulay - Professor of Modern Culture & Media, Brown UniversityAzad Essa - Author, Hostile HomelandsDaniel Levy - President, US/Middle East ProjectOrly Noy - Journalist, Human Rights AdvocateOmar Al-Ghazzi - Associate Professor of Media & Communications, London School of EconomicsRami Younis - Journalist; Former host On the Other Hand, Makan 33Ramzy Baroud - Editor-in-Chief, Palestine ChronicleSarah Leah Whitson - Executive Director, DAWNSwasti Rao - Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies & AnalysesYara Eid - Palestinian Journalist in GazaYumna Patel - Palestine News Director, MondoweissSubscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribeFollow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/AJEnglishFind us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/aljazeeraCheck our website: https://www.aljazeera.com/Check out our Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/aljazeeraenglish/Download AJE Mobile App: https://aje.io/AJEMobile@AljazeeraEnglish#Aljazeeraenglish#News

They don't get much more classic than Randy Travis's major label debut single, 1985's "On the Other Hand". We could have spent the whole episode on Travis's understated vocals (we practically do!), but what other elements of the song cause us to find ourselves rooting for a man who has already gone a few steps too far?
This week's Industry Review is something familiar in the world of audio. Bobby is joined by Síle Seoige, host of ‘Ready to be Real' in Galway and Chris Johns, co-host of ‘The Other Hand' all to discuss the business of podcasting in Ireland.
In this episode Jim asks Chris if he is ghost writing articles for the FT.An actual FT journalist, one of their best, wrote an article about the things that Chris has been banging on about since The Other Hand started. Life in the Uk is getting steadily worse. Tim Harford cites three personal anecdotes and lots of data to make the point that public sector services have collapsed in the UK.Chris agrees and extends the point to a lot of private sector services. One reason why both private and public sectors are falling over is a lot of vey good people, normally hard working and conscientious, have worked out that the game is rigged. Anyone who believes that 'if a job is worth doing, it is worth doing well' is a mug. When average bankers get £10m for... what?. When signing on bonuses for hedge fund managers have reached £100m! 'The system is rigged' is not an unreasonable conclusion. When you don't even get respect for doing a good job, let alone fair pay, what's the point? And lots of chat about really interesting economic data released around the world this week. Economies are wilting under the pressure of higher interest rates. Irish manufacturing, especially from the 'modern' sector is very weak. The Other Hand's occasional coverage of the Rugby World Cup starts here!An ongoing conversation with Irish Times journalist Nathan Johns. Enjoy some proper rugby analysis, a little rugby banter, free of cliche and jargon, from a journalist who really does know his stuff. In today's episode we set the scene by asking whether the RWC can be as unifying a force for France as was the 1998 soccer world cup.The opening match couldn't have been better scripted: between the first and second favourites. Why are the two sides of the draw so lopsided? Could Ireland fail to get out of 'the group of death'The groups were decided years ago, to ease the travel plans of the world's prawn sandwich brigade rugby officials and their friends and familiesWill France, 'the most Unfrench team' prevail? How will Ireland do? Nobody wants to look like a lump clumbering around. So what's the best way to get into a single? And how can you adapt that if your mobility isn't what it once was? Timestamps 01:00 Single sculls - how to feel safe getting in and out. 02:45 The basic method demonstrated Nathan Benderson Park - How to: 3 ways to board a rowing scull https://www.facebook.com/watch/?extid=CL-UNK-UNK-UNK-IOS_GK0T-GK1C&mibextid=2Rb1fB&v=1168574316827619 Start with positioning the blades. Ensure the handles overlap or are touching so the ends butt up together. Hold the handles with both in one hand (the hand closest to the water). Create stability by putting upward pressure on the handles. Push the seat backwards on the slide so you have enough space to step onto the deck of the boat. Put your (closest to the water) foot onto the deck. Transfer your weight onto that foot and bring the other foot over from the dock to join it. Lower yourself onto the seat (keep pulling he handles up) 05:30 She makes useful remarks about how the wind is pushing the boat away from the dock and how to ensure it doesn't drift away while you are getting into the boat. Get into the habit of first assessing the wind and weather conditions before getting on the water. This is a good safety practice. 06:30 Hold the handles WITHOUT your finger between the grips. A better way to hold the scull handles when getting in and out of the boat. Create a triangle of strength with the oar handles to make the boat more stable. 07:40 Getting into a single from a seated position. Position the oars in the same way as for the basic method above. Sit on the dock and hold the handles in the OTHER HAND (the one closest to the dock). Keep upwards pressure on the handles. Position the seat and place your other hand behind the seat (closer to the bows) on the deck. Pull your feet close to your bum (butt) and use the hand on the deck to push up and lift your bum across onto the seat. Simultaneously push on your foot (the one furthest from the boat) to enable you to get your bum off the ground and over the gunwale / sax board of your single. Sit on the seat. Bring your other leg over into the boat. 09:45 Rowing with adaptations Athletes with knee issues won't be able to do this seated method. Know some variations which you can suggest to these folks. It's important they feel safe getting into a single scull. Adaptation #1 - hold the rigger for them Adaptation #2 - they need two hands to push up their body weight so cannot hold the handles. You hold the oars and /or the rigger for them to create stability. Adaptation #3 - start kneeling all fours and 'roll over' to sit on the seat. 12:15 Swan poo on the dock. Add cut down yoga mats to the dock so you can sit / kneel on a clean surface. If this is useful for you, please support the podcast with a monthly donation to fund our advocacy work with clubs and federations to improve masters rowing. https://fastermastersrowing.com/podcast/ 13:30 Standing push off into a single scull Standing push off John Tracy - the standing push off method of getting into a single scull https://www.screencast.com/t/XElhObsd7R 15:30 Push out the water side scull, position the seat and place one foot on the deck of the boat. Hold the rigger or bank side blade shaft with your hand (the water-side hand holds the oar handles). This allows you to balance and control your body weight and create stability as yo transfer weight from the dock to standing in the boat. 16:16 As you push off you want a lot of weight on the foot on the dock so you can give it a big push. As he pushes, he transfers weight to the foot in the boat. Balance is achieved by controlling the tilt of the boat by holding the oar shaft or rigger. Stand with both feet on the deck and sit down. 17:15 the bank side blade is still on top of the dock. Pull this oar towards you - ensure it's squared - use the oar tip to push out against the side of the dock. The other hand holds the entire boat level while the oar rests on the surface of the water. You can hold the single level with only one hand/oar. 19:15 Other considerations - once you have the basics. Get a friend to be nearby to catch a rigger if you get unbalanced. Boats tip a lot before you fall in - try rigger dipping. Work out how far you can tilt the boat before you fall in. Get in and out of your boat safely is a good way to learn boat handling skills. These promote safety and control in different weather conditions. Want easy live streams like this? Instant broadcasts to Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn. Chris Johns is a regular contributor to Eamon Dunphy's The Stand podcast and he also writes regularly about politics and economics. More recently he has launched his own podcast with fellow economist Jim Power, called ‘The Other Hand'. I read and listen to his work regularly and always find him to be highly intelligent, wonderful with words, and very insightful about a lot of the issues I find fascinating – like who or what is ‘the markets' and why do they seem to exert so much control over all of us? How did the UK become such a basket case so quickly? Why do economists get paid so much to make predictions that 90% of the time turn out to be wrong? There was so much I wanted to ask Chris that we ended up talking for almost 2 hours, so we've decided to chop it up into two parts for you. This is part 1 in which we learn about Chris early life and how he was the first of his family to go to University, how he ended up being able to semi-retire at 55, his brilliant take on Boris Johnson and UK politics, why economists should never get paid to make predictions, why Facebook should never have been allowed to get so big, and lots more. Dr. Carola Salvi launched the exhibit "The Power of the Other Hand" in response to the stories of domestic violence shared with her by survivors. In this episode, we peel back the layers of these survivor experiences to reveal the raw emotions beneath the images, the artist, and the women portrayed on the canvas. Tackling some of the most challenging aspects of abuse such as the impact of non-fatal strangulation, the scars of physical violence, and the trauma resulting from power and control, our conversation slowly but surely illustrates that experiences of abuse, much like art, are never as simple as they seem, and very often can alter one's life forever.Carola Salvi has a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience. She is a Psychologist and Artist born in Bergamo (Italy), studied psychology in Milan, and in 2010 moved to Chicago to study at Northwestern University. In 2019 she joined the Psychiatry Department at the Dell Medical Hospital at the University of Texas at Austin. The exhibit, "The Power of the Other Hand", debuted at the Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas in 2022.
