Come join me for a personal discussion with the man I credit for helping me to reconnect with my Jewish identity and faith. Reb Moshe Waldoks helped me find a practice of Judaism that spoke to my soul. Reb Moshe is the son of Holocaust survivors and an “advocate for joy.” Reb Moshe spent 12 years as a teacher, storyteller, and comedian. He co-edited The Big Book of Jewish Humor with William Novak. Reb Moshe helped establish a vibrant community at Temple Beth Zion in Brookline, Massachusetts, where I have belonged for the past 26 years. In this time of increased anti-semitism, I wanted to do this important interview. Come check it out. Learn more about Steven Hassan and Freedom of Mind Resource Center. In this episode, we sit down with comedian and musician Ami Kozak, host of the Ami's House podcast and member of the band Distant Cousins, to delve into the nuances of his career and unique perspective as an orthodox Jew in the comedy world. We explore what initially drew him to comedy and the pivotal moments that solidified his path in the industry. Ami shares his thoughts on why there's a disproportionate number of Jewish comedians and how his Jewish identity shapes his material. We also discuss the challenges of navigating the comedy scene while staying true to his faith. Ami offers insight into the vital role of comedy in society, especially in tackling serious issues and pushing the boundaries of free speech. We then shift focus to his unexpected journey into Jewish activism, spurred by the events of October 7th, and his approach to engaging with audiences that hold opposing views. Ami also delivers a powerful message for young American Jews and non-Jews in the face of rising global antisemitism and antizionism. In a fun twist, Ami takes on the personas of various well-known figures, including Jordan Peterson, Donald Trump, and Prince Harry, in a rapid-fire Q&A segment. He hilariously and thoughtfully addresses questions on finding meaning in chaotic times, the current political climate, cultural shifts, and more. This episode is a blend of humor, introspection, and timely social commentary that you won't want to miss. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/judaismdemystified/support
Fluent Fiction - Hebrew: Unveiling the Magic of Jewish Humor: A Night in Tel Aviv Find the full episode transcript, vocabulary words, and more:fluentfiction.org/unveiling-the-magic-of-jewish-humor-a-night-in-tel-aviv Story Transcript:He: באמצע הערב החמים, ממעמקי שייקינג של השדרות כביש לשדרות אבן גבירול, אנשים ממולאים סביב שולחן בקפה קטן. ישנם דוד, שרה ויעל, שלושה חברים ישראלים, שישבו לשתות את האספרסו החם שלהם, כאשר באוויר המתמלא באווירת הלילה של תל אביב, נערך במשחק מלחמה של מילים.En: In the middle of the warm evening, from the depths of the bustling streets from Ibn Gabirol to Shenkin Street, people were huddled around a table in a small café. There were David, Sarah, and Yael, three Israeli friends, sitting to enjoy their hot espresso, as in the night air of Tel Aviv, a word war game unfolded. En: The café doors opened, and in walked a young man who seemed out of place. He responded to their question of "Where are you from?" with "I am from Australia," and they immediately invited him to join them. En: David, the main comedian among them, began telling Jewish jokes, but the Australian was uninterested. He didn't understand what "Jewish humor" was. Sarah and Yael asked David to explain it to him. En: "Jewish humor," David began, "is a humoristic perspective on pretentiousness, the art of survival, living by surprise, patience, and of course, something we all might experience - irony." He showed the Australian a few more jokes; some took time to explain, but the Australian still remained aloof. En: "Alright, I see I need to teach you," David finally said, "We'll start with one horse and then we'll go back to international jokes."He: מאז, שלושת הישראלים ממשיכים לשתות את האספרסו שלהם, מחייכים לעתים קרובות כאשר הם מבינים את הבדיחות של דוד, בעוד שהאוסטרליאי יושב שם, מנסה להבין את ההומור המוזר שלהם.En: Since then, the three Israelis continued to drink their espresso, smiling often as they understood David's jokes, while the Australian sat there, trying to comprehend their strange humor. En: Words flowed back and forth across the espresso table until the city started to fade into the scene. In the end, on that warm night in Tel Aviv, they tried to explain something difficult to someone, but they also gave him an unforgettable experience of friendship. And maybe in the end, that was the magic of Jewish humor - not necessarily the laughter, but the ability to bring people together. While I try to tackle a wide variety of subjects with equal interest, it's easy to tell which subjects really excite me. Just look through the archives to see how many times I revisit a subject. I just came across these 2007 episodes and realized that I'd done a total of 6 episodes (3 guests doing 2 episodes each) on Jewish humor. I don't believe there are any more, but I still have a few more old cassette tapes to digitize and upload. So enjoy, why not? Joyce Antler is our guest. She authored the book "You Never Call You Never Write." And keep in mind that this isn't just a collection of jokes. Joyce takes a serious look at how Jewish women impacted American culture. But there are a few laughs along the way.

On today's show we are very pleased to have Noah Zimmerman, founder and operator of the Instagram page Old Jewish Men (@oldjewishmen). If you're wondering why this page exists and more importantly, how it became so f*****g funny, you're about to find out. Zimmerman's content, which ranges from borderline barbaric to beautifully bizarre, spans a wide continuum, casting the spotlight on older Jewish men and for a brief moment, turning their anonymity into celebrity. In addition to breaking Jewish news, creating Jewish memes and commenting on the lives of famous Jews, the page is famous for its daily content which includes the frequent poll question, "OJM or not OJM" as well as its signature Ralph Lifshitz apparel. Much of its story content is narrated by Zimmerman, who's legendary Old Jewish Man impersonation serves as a humorous reminder of how all of us remember our Jewish grandfathers, with a bit of shtetl, war veteran, and Brooklyn sprinkled in between. With over 55K followers it is a page that emphasizes the perks of aging Jewish, Noah Zimmerman has headed the call, creating content which combines the humor and Hebraic in ageing New York Jews. I was thrilled to find this cassette in the box of old shows. These episodes aired toward the end of 1999. My guest was also a very dear friend named Don Herman. Don passed away in 2019. He meant a lot to my wife & me. His wife Bluma is still a part of our lives. In 1997 Jewish Theatre Grand Rapids staged a play Don wrote called "That Reminds Me of a Story." It was collection of brilliant examples of classic Jewish Humor. Back in 2020 I revisited the world of Jewish humor again. Check out Podcast #113 for that. But this is the original. One other note: On these cassettes that I'm digitizing & uploading there are sorts of sounds such as mic checks, countdowns from my engineer, a word or so from my guest, etc. As you would expect, I edit those out for these podcasts. Well, there are a couple sweets remarks by Don immediately before & after the episodes that I couldn't bring myself to cut. So here we go, all the way. Enjoy.
