Google's Wing App, Parrot ANAFI AI, World-Class Skyfish Drones for Engineering and Critical Infrastructure, Made In USA Drones In the fourth edition of Drone Life News, Paul and Miriam McNabb of DroneLife and JobforDrones discuss some of the latest and most exciting news from the world of drones. Our biggest story this week is about Parrot's new ANAFI AI drone. This unique drone comes with obstacle avoidance that is inspired by nature's best flyers - insects. Moreover, this is the first commercial drone to be 4G-connected - which means that you can fly easily even in areas of heavy magnetic interference. You will also learn how Parrot has managed to future-proof this drone to account for the fast-changing drone regulations. Next up, you will learn about Google Wing's new App, OpenSky - a free drone pilot app using which you can easily abide by FAA's regulations. Apart from learning where to fly (and more importantly, where not to fly), you can also use this app to get permission to fly in controlled airspace. The US-China trade wars have certainly boosted the prospects of various homegrown manufacturers. One such drone manufacturer is the Montana-based, Skyfish. Learn how Skyfish's purpose-built technology is being used to create precise 3D models for engineering and critical infrastructure. This is a show that you do not want to miss. Tune in now! Google's Wing App, Parrot Anafi AI, Critical infrastructure and Skyfish's new purpose built technology In the fourth edition of Drone Life News, Paul and Miriam McNabb of DroneLife and JobforDrones discuss some of the latest and most exciting news from the world of drones. Our biggest story this week is about the launch of Google's Wing App and its purpose to assist Drone Pilots in navigating through US regulations and providing all required regulatory information in one location. We discuss Parrot's new Anafi AI drone release, a drone that is not only an insect inspired design but has active detect and avoid technology inspired from insects. Other features include future proof aspects that Parrot has actively included to account for possibly future regulations to ensure their drone stays relevant for Drone pilots with changing regulations. In other conversations we also discuss the burning need for FAA to define critical infrastructure and how in its absence, local authority are stepping in to regulate drone flights. Having critical infrastructure defined allows Drone Pilots to clearly follow a unified regulatory framework with no ambiguity. We also discuss about Skyfish's new purpose built technology to specifically help infrastructure companies perform engineering measurements more accurately. Today's show is about American drone manufacturers and the industry dynamics as a whole. Our caller for today, Gordon is looking for some feasible alternatives to DJI. The US-China trade war and data security concerns have given a fillip to American drone manufacturers, who have, till now been unable to compete with the Chinese behemoth, DJI. And while homegrown manufacturers have managed to get their foot in the door, are they able to match DJI in terms of price and functionality? These are some of the drones that we talk about in today's show: AirPeak (Sony) Bobby's Watt's Prism The Autel Evo II Parrot Anafi Vantage Robotics Vesper (cheapest & flies the longest) Skydio X2 And many, many more... This week in drone news, we discuss a Mavic 3 rumor that wasn't really a rumor. We talk about FAA extending the Special Federal Aviation Regulation until September. We go over the new Parrot Anafi USA and how Parrot's CEO, Henri Seydoux, unexpectedly slammed DJI in public. And lastly, we will show you a map of drone rescues over the world. As it turns out, the images were part of another existing DJI agro drone called the T16. So we will have to wait a little longer for a release date for the Mavic 3! Extension of Special FAR The FAA has extended its special FAR that was issued a few months ago to deal with COVID shutdowns. Remote Pilot whose privileges are due to expire between March and September (previously June) can renew online. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2020/06/29/2020-13960/limited-extension-of-relief-for-certain-persons-and-operations-during-the-coronavirus-disease-2019 Parrot Anafi USA Two weeks ago, we discussed the new Parrot Anafi “rugged version”. More information was release this week from Parrot. It's called the Parrot Anafi USA because it was designed for the US Army. Equipped with 3 cams: 32x zoom 2 cameras 21-MP cam claiming to see from 3.1 mi. FLIR camera coupled with the zoom. 500 gram, quiet (79 dB), ready in 55 seconds and all-weather. Something unexpected came out of the release when Henri Seydoux, the CEO of Parrot, openly slammed DJI publicly by claiming that a version of DJI Go was silently modified after data leaks were supposedly found. DJI responded by saying the data was not for the DJI Go app but for its Osmo device (DJI Mimo app) and the information was not leaked but going to a third-party provider to share footage. Drone Rescues Maps Drones are used for good daily in the world. DJI has compiled a map of all drone rescues in the world 130 in the US, 63 in Europe, 23 in Asia, 14 in Latin America https://dronelife.com/2020/06/29/dji-drone-rescue-map/
Our first story this week is about the forthcoming drone conferences in 2020 and 2021. Taking into account the current situation, DJI has decided to go virtual with Airworks 2020. And drone pilots will be glad to learn that they won't have to shell out hundreds of dollars to attend this conference. Now, you can attend this conference for just $35. It shall be interesting to see if other conferences like the FAA Symposium and CES shall follow suit by making these conferences more affordable in these trying times. Next, we discuss how some irresponsible drone pilots have taken to skies to film protests being held in cities across the US. While we strongly condemn the sad death of George Floyd, flouting drone laws and flying recklessly is both dangerous and downright foolish. Listeners will learn how a drone flying over a protest came unnervingly close to an LAPD helicopter. We also have some interesting news to share about the current state of the drone industry. As US-China tensions reach an all-time high, certain factions in the government are discouraging the use of DJI drones. But, can any industry incumbents really match DJI in terms of production capabilities and affordability? Autel Robotics Releases the 8K variant of Autel Evo 2, How Public Safety Agencies are using Drones to Fight the Coronavirus, Parrot Anafi UA for Military Use Our biggest drone news story this week is about the Autel Evo 2. Autel Robotics has finally released the 8K version of this much-awaited and much-delayed drone. Regular ADU listeners might recall that we tested out this drone when it was first released at CES 2020. Autel is yet to release the 6K and dual variants of this drone. While this drone has best-in-class specs and can be a good addition to your fleet, it remains to be seen how this drone will be received considering the current situation. Will new launches like the Autel Evo 2, DJI Mavic Air 2, and DJI Mavic 3 succeed in reviving a stuttering drone market? Next, we discuss how drones are being increasingly used by public safety officials to fight the coronavirus. While the intentions are good, public safety agencies tend to go overboard which creates negative public perception. In this segment of the show, we also discuss the pitfalls of flying under a COA. This serves as a good segue to the next story - which is about using drone deliveries for COVID testing. The drone delivery service provider, Zipline is using drones to facilitate COVID testing in Ghana. Drones deliveries can help enforce social distancing while adhering to social distancing norms. Unlike the US, drone laws are more flexible in African countries, and so they can leverage the power of drone technology for the greater good. April 15th is the last day for sending in your comments. So, click HERE to be a part of this important decision-making process. Our next big story is about a hobby pilot, a 14-year old, flouting an existing TFR to fly his Phantom over a baseball stadium in Boston. Will the FAA enforce any action against this boy? And, how was this boy able to bypass DJI's Geo-fencing system? Next, we share how Google has been successful in making drone deliveries in Australia. According to industry speculations, drone deliveries in the US are finally set to take flight. So, who will be the first off the starting block? Google or Amazon?
