What does it take to create healthy neighborhoods that include broad, deep, and permanent pathways to prosperity for low-income families? That question is the focus of today's episode with Carol Redmond Naughton, CEO of Purpose Built Communities based in Atlanta. “I really have become an advocate for community development as a way to move the needle on health outcomes. And I'm not talking about simply putting a kidney dialysis center in the bottom floor of a senior high rise,” Naughton says. “I don't mean to say that that's not a good thing to do, but we've got to move upstream. We've got to be way upstream and be thinking about: How are we building communities and supporting children, so those children 60 years from now will not need kidney dialysis?” In a conversation that was first published in 2022, Naughton speaks with Movement Is Life's Dr. Tamara Huff about the difference between access to health care and health outcomes and the importance of addressing the social determinants of health. She also calls on all of us to reflect on the systems that have kept people trapped in poverty — especially Black and Brown communities — and consider what it takes to create communities that support a “cradle to college pipeline.” Never miss an episode – be sure to subscribe to The Health Disparities podcast from Movement Is Life on Apple Podcasts, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts.

After a life-changing ATV accident in 2017 that resulted in the loss of his left hand, Mo’s story became one of resilience, transformation, and purpose. With a master’s in Industrial Organizational Psychology from UGA and executive development at Harvard Business School, Mo now leads as a consultant and coach, helping individuals and organizations navigate transition, and unlock their highest potential. His journey is a testament to the power of perspective, community, and relentless personal growth. Key Takeaways: Resilience Through Adversity: Mo’s journey illustrates how adversity, like his 2017 accident, can lead to profound self-discovery and transformation when faced with courage and a strong support system. Purpose Built on Service: Mo’s “because” is rooted in helping others through transition—recognizing that everyone faces challenges and that real strength is found in community, self-exploration, and service to others. Leadership Isn’t Lonely—It’s Collaborative: Mo emphasizes that leadership becomes isolating only when you refuse to let others in. The right team and open communication are essential to thriving as a leader or in any major life change. Sound Bites: “There is no individual hero… There’s a ton of people that are putting inputs in to kind of help you.” “Go within yourself—things that people are interested in may be the key to unlocking their gift.” “Leadership isn’t lonely, it’s isolated, because there’s a ton of people going through the same thing… you’re just not allowing other people to help.” Quote by Mick: “The game of sport is a business. And so now you go from being a player to having to think like a business person because you become a business yourself at that point in time as well.” Connect & Discover Mo: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ironmassaquoi/?hl=en Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mohamedmassaquoi/ Website: https://www.thevessol.com/ Website: Players for Good FOLLOW MICK ON:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mickunplugged/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mickunplugged/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@mickunplugged LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mickhunt/Website: https://www.mickhuntofficial.com Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mick-unplugged/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Emergencies don't wait—neither should you.” —Dave Beagle, Ooma In a time-sensitive and information-rich conversation, Doug Green, publisher of Technology Reseller News, sat down with Dave Beagle of Ooma to discuss the urgent need for businesses to migrate away from traditional copper POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) lines. Beagle delivered a compelling presentation centered around Ooma's Airdial solution, which is specifically engineered to support mission-critical applications like fire and life safety systems. The discussion highlighted a ticking clock: with AT&T aiming to sunset all copper lines by 2029—and over 10 million POTS lines still active—resellers and IT advisors are faced with a once-in-a-generation opportunity. “That means replacing over 8,500 lines a day, starting now,” said Beagle. “It's time for partners to act.” Ooma Airdial stands out in the growing “POTS-in-a-box” market for several reasons: Purpose-Built for Fire Life Safety: Unlike competitors that cobble together multiple technologies, Airdial is a vertically integrated solution—built by Ooma from the ground up for environments like elevators, fire panels, and emergency call systems. MultiPath Transport (MPT): Ooma's patented, active-active voice transmission over LTE and Ethernet ensures emergency calls remain connected without failover delays. Compliance and Visibility: Airdial supports NFPA 72, UL certifications, and PCI/HIPAA regulations, with device-level management available via a robust Remote Device Manager portal. Award-Winning Technology: Airdial has earned accolades from Elevator World, Internet Telephony, FacilitiesNet, and Frost & Sullivan for innovation and reliability. Beagle also underscored how rising costs and decommissioning notices—often buried in telecom bills—are already impacting organizations. In one case, a $100 POTS line was suddenly billed at $1,000 due to a rate hike buried in the fine print. “That's $25,000 in exposure over two months—money that could've gone to laptops in a school district or medical equipment in a hospital,” said Beagle. Airdial's design reflects real-world installation challenges: from basement deployment and signal optimization to asset management and E911 location accuracy. Even the power cord has a locking mechanism to prevent accidental shutdown. “We control the hardware, the software, and the supply chain,” Beagle said. “We believe that's why so many resellers and channel partners are choosing Airdial—and why many who started with other solutions are switching to Ooma.” To learn more, visit ooma.com/airdial.

Is the GTA housing market oversupplied or just misunderstood? In this episode of Sync or Swim, host Max Steinman takes a deep dive into the purpose-built rental market with industry leaders Chrystal LeBlanc (BGO), Michelle Calloway (Fitzrovia), and Todd Spencer (Park Property Inc.). Together, they explore how their organizations are responding to shifting renter preferences, navigating condo oversupply challenges, and redefining the rental experience in the Greater Toronto Area. Tune in for expert advice on navigating Toronto's rental market, practical strategies for adapting to evolving renter expectations, and inspiring lessons from exceptional leaders shaping the future of multifamily housing. Whether you're a property pro, a curious investor, or simply interested in where Toronto's housing market is headed, this episode will leave you informed, inspired, and ready to take action! Key Points From This Episode: Purpose-built rental developments in Toronto: affordable, downsizer-friendly, and amenity-rich. Market insights into rental oversupply and condo saturation impacting prices and demand. Key distinctions between condos and purpose-built rentals (and why purpose-built is better!) Michelle's take on the decline in foreign student demand in Toronto rentals. Growing demand for flexible lease terms, dedicated workspaces, and personalized leasing. Insight into the customer service evolution needed to meet changing renter preferences. Strategies the panel has implemented to reduce “shopping around” and close deals faster. Hospitality-inspired practices that are key to elevating the resident experience. Reframing renting as a choice, emphasizing security, community, and modern amenities. Combatting negative stigma around renting and landlords by creating great experiences. New language, fostering renter dignity, and leveraging technology to change perceptions. The panel's reflections on the “promise of Toronto” and why they remain optimistic. Why collaboration and knowledge-sharing among industry peers is critically important. Reasons to create community “stickiness” and what it can to do reduce tenant turnover. Some of the most rewarding aspects of being in the purpose-built rental industry. Quotes: “We need to be better at saying why purpose-built rental is different [to condos]. We think about our residents – 24/7 – We need to work harder in the sales pitch to highlight what that means: that our service levels are higher [and] our systems are better.” — Todd Spencer [0:10:26] “You can spend all the money on marketing in the world, but if you don't step in that front door and have a consistent experience with what you see – online, it can fall flat really quickly.” — Chrystal LeBlanc [0:13:46] “What I always say is we don't have 500 suites. When a prospect walks in the door, we have three suites for you based on your budget, your family, what's important to you, [and we only show] suites that are right for that prospect.” — Chrystal LeBlanc [0:19:37] “If we want to be recognized as world cities, we need to behave like world cities. In the rest of the world, renting is not a stigmatized activity. It's actually the dominant housing ecosystem in most major cities in the world.” — Todd Spencer [0:25:19] “We need to be better at sharing insights with each other in the industry. I invite everybody to come tour my assets not because they're new and shiny but [because] I want to hear what you're doing too. That's going to raise us up altogether.” — Michelle Calloway [0:35:28] “The [purpose-built rental] industry is changing since I joined 10 years ago. That – excites me. We still have a long way to go. We're not there yet, but I can't wait to see where we go.” — Michelle Calloway [0:40:39] Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Toronto Rentsync User Roadshow 2024 Chrystal LeBlanc BentallGreenOak (BGO) Chrystal LeBlanc on LinkedIn Michelle Calloway Fitzrovia Michelle Calloway on LinkedIn Todd Spencer Park Property Management Inc. A Clare tourism company is looking forward to putting a three-year ordeal behind it, with the arrival of its new-purpose built boat. Dolphinwatch Carrigaholt, which offers tours along the coast of Clare as far down as Kerry, has been unable to operate since before the pandemic due the delayed arrival of its new vessel. The boat, which is called Murúch, was supposed to be fully-built in May 2022 but financial difficulties, the war in Ukraine, the pandemic and a fire in the factory have meant it only arrived this month. Owner and Skipper of Dolphinwatch Carrigaholt Mary-Kate Bolger is happy the company is back on course after what has felt like a rudderless few years.

Scott Eckstein shares his unique and diverse background creating solutions for an aging planet. Learn about his current roles as Managing Director of Active Living International and Chief Strategy Officer for CiminoCare Care, challenges curating quality care for his aging loved ones, and passion for educating the next generation of senior living providers. About Scott Scott Eckstein has over 30 years of diverse research, analysis, development, operations, and education experience in the senior living space. He has been directly involved in senior living projects throughout the United States, South and Central America, Europe, Africa, and Asia and specializes in providing strategic analysis, acquisitions, development, education, and operations advisory solutions for an aging planet. He is currently the Managing Director for Active Living International, an internationally focused senior living advisory firm, as well as Strategic Advisor for CiminoCare, a California-based middle market senior living operator. Eckstein's senior living experience began in the nascent days of senior housing. He has helped promote the creation of purpose built environments for senior wellness, lifestyles and care as well as having specialized in the creation and operation of a unique range of residential alternatives for the aging population worldwide, from active adult housing through the spectrum to memory care. Eckstein has held management positions at numerous senior living operators: Brookdale, Emeritus (now Brookdale), Aegis Living, Sunrise Senior Living and ARV Assisted Living (now Atria). In addition, he was also the Director of Business Development at WellAWARE Systems (now part of Best Buy), a pioneer in the senior tech space. Eckstein was also, the Director of the Senior Living Program at Boston University's School of Hospitality Administration and was a Clinical Assistant Professor and Senior Living Executive in Residence at the Granger Cobb Institute for Senior Living in the Carson College of Business at Washington State University (in which whose formation he was actively involved.) Key Takeaways A career in senior living and aging services is impactful because of the ability to make a difference in people's lives for a few years rather than a few days in a hotel or resort. There are incredible opportunities, but the industries don't market themselves well. Active adult (55+) communities serve a younger age bracket needing minimal care. The category overlaps with wellness real estate and intergenerational housing. Independent living adds care services and attracts people in their late 70s and 80s. One of the biggest problems in the active adult housing market is residents don't want to leave as they age and need higher levels of care. In the United States, you can't push people out legally. The biggest challenges in senior living are related to management, leadership, training, and culture. They are intricately related. The silent generation and baby boomers are focused on wellness and technology, so senior living communities are incorporating Centers for Healthy Living with massage rooms, fitness equipment and aging-related retail. Most communities offer telehealth post covid, and some offer a tech concierge. The most important questions to ask an assisted living community before signing on the dotted line include the turnover of team members and the training they receive, the flexible (or lack of) of the dining options. Dining is the major issue beyond care.

Robin Spencer has the kind of career trajectory that makes people nod their heads admiringly—even if they can't *really* explain what she did as 1) Clearbit's Chief Operating Officer, or 2) Google's Head of Strategy & Operations. Suffice it to say: Robin has had some big jobs. And despite her success, she's more likely to talk about how bad she is at karaoke than about how good she is at building operationally excellent companies and teams. In the latest episode of Change Enablers, Robin opens up and reflects on the highs and lows of scaling operations at Clearbit—with advice for operators at all levels. Robin and Ken cover:• how much in Operations is process and how much is people• not getting ahead of yourself at a small-stage company• Robin's experience joining Clearbit when they had more tools than people, and how she approached her role to simplify things• processes are processes, no matter how informal (and sometimes the simplest solution = the most elegant one)• the influence that team dynamics play in making or breaking operations at a company• how to effectively set up a team early on to achieve optimal productivity• documenting your playbooks, even if you're the only player• what her team was able to focus on once she freed up their time to be creative Where to find Robin Spencer:• LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robinbspencer/Where to find your host, Ken: • LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kenbabcock/• Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/bigredbabz• Change Enablers, a community by Tango: https://www.tango.us/change-enablers-communityLike what you heard?
