Kriget mot terrorismen i Mellanöstern blev kostsamt när allt fler soldater miste livet utan några särskilda framgångar. Efter att drönare länge hade betraktats som en teknologi i periferin flyttade de nu in i strategernas finrum som en lösning på problemet. Mellan 2005 och 2013 växte den amerikanska drönarflottan från ett femtiotal farkoster till mer än 7 500.I dagens avsnitt av Militärhistoriepodden diskuterar idéhistorikern Peter Bennesved och historieprofessorn Martin Hårdstedt det så kallade "Drone Wars", drönarkriget, under 00-talet.Den nya generationen drönare användes på nya sätt. Utöver de signalspanings- och övervakningsuppgifter som tidigare varit centrala började CIA och det amerikanska flygvapnet använda drönare för att slå ut enskilda mål på långa avstånd. Mest känd från den här tiden är modellen M9 Predator. Genom att diskret spåra upp sina mål och följa dem på långt avstånd kunde drönarna slå ut små grupper av terrorister eller deras resurser i gömställen, på gatorna eller i bilar. Märkligt nog tilläts detta pågå i länder som Pakistan, Jemen, Somalia och Libyen, trots att USA inte formellt var i krig med dem.Drone Wars skapade stora problem för den amerikanska offentligheten, eftersom många ansåg att den här typen av "krig mot terrorismen" var onödigt brutalt, omoraliskt och ledde till omfattande civila förluster. Det hände ofta att drönarna anföll fel mål eller att terroristerna befann sig i civila miljöer när de blev attackerade. Det fanns också något moraliskt störande i det faktum att drönaroperatörerna kunde styra och anfalla från sina högkvarter i Langley eller utanför Las Vegas.Utvecklingen av den här typen av drönare fick många strateger att fundera. I switched up my scheduled episode today because of requests coming in to do a show on the drones here in NJ.     If you haven't seen anything about this, we have been having mysterious drones, some the size of cars, flying all over the great state of NJ since November 20th.     The way I see it, there's 2-3 possibilities as to what or who is behind these.  I will tell you though, whatever it is, it's nefarious.  I don't like it one bit.   If you want to hear my take on it, you will have to give this one a listen.  But be warned, this might lead you far down the rabbit hole with the bread crumbs I leave here and there in my take on it.   Let me know what you think!
