Should you perform hand catching of drones? Are there practical benefits to it? or does hand catching just about inviting unwarranted injuries? Hand catching a drone - You've possibly seen pilots doing this or seen a social media post of a horrific injury while performing the act but is hand catching really required? should pilots follow them or is it an unsafe practice to be avoided? Today, we answer everything we know about hand catching a drone and we would like to thank Tom who question today is all about hand catching and if there are any benefits to performing them? Today's question is brought to you by the PROPS program, a program specifically designed, and caters to the needs of groups of pilots. It is ideally meant for team of pilots, and organizations that want multiple pilots to progress through their learning curve together. Props allows teams to monitor progress, manage and document learning and ensure a larger audience are progressing together. We start off today's show discussing why hand catching is a practical and effective process for drone pilots to follow and what process should pilots follow for performing hand catching. We discuss how hand catching can be very effective in certain flying conditions and environments and how drone pilots can perform hand catching. We then discuss details of principles that are involved with hand catching. Commonly called the 90 degree rule, we discuss the relevance of rotating a drone by 90 degree and expected outcome of such practices. Next we discuss if hand catching is pertinent to all drones and if all drones behave similarly to hand catching process and how newer drones have different firmware that can cause a different reaction to hand catching practice. Lastly we discuss about safety incidents arising from hand catching and how pilots can steer clear off them by following simple safety precautions. Towards the end of the podcast, we new courses and classes coming up for Drone U members and the new learning that pilots can obtain from these courses. When approached by a government official claiming that I am flying legally how do I explain myself? What precautions should I be taking to address such scenarios? Today's podcasts is flight regulations and airspace approvals. Our question for today is from Frank who was questioned by a government employee who claimed Frank was flying illegally around a lake and dam. Frank had used all FAA's tools and ensured he was well within the law but Frank would like to how pilots can address such scenarios and what are the best practices for Pilots to follow to stay within legal requirements of drone flights. We answer Frank's question by first addressing the ambiguity of whether drone regulations can be enforced by local governing bodies and what current Drone laws state. A strong emphasis in our response is on recent status of drone regulations across the US and how laws are being enforced. We discuss the role of local agencies and responsibilities that Drone pilots should be aware to steer clear of drone law enforcement. We then discuss if its a good idea for pilots to fly around lakes and dams, discussing the laws that surround VLOS and its relevance to drone flights and how pilots need to embrace VLOS requirements for conducting safe flights. We also discuss specific of what constitutes critical infrastructure in the US and how agencies can work together to define and regulate laws around critical infrastructure. What are the best practices when using DroneDeploy during mapping missions? Are there any preferred workflows to using DroneDeploy? Today's question is from Justin, who wants to know if DroneDeploy is the software of choice for use in mapping missions and what are some of the best practices around the use of DroneDeploy. We begin today's episode by listing the best resources for pilots undertaking mapping missions and going over the best workflows for an efficient and effective mapping mission. We then discuss how customer requirements can be a game changer to mapping projects deliveries and why pilots need to often consider this aspect when planning flight missions. We study DroneDeploy and its benefits and compare it with another leading mapping software solution, the Optelos, and delve into which software is better for today's mapping demands. A true assessment of a software is not complete by reviewing its application in mapping projects and we precisely trim down the comparisons between commercial and residential applications of mapping missions and how software plays a critical role in such projects. In our last segment we focus on how Pix4D is better suited for 2D applications and summarize the workflow for pilots to follow when pursuing a mapping mission. Whether you are a seasoned veteran in the mapping world or looking to get started into drone mapping, this is an episode you don't want to miss. Can pilots fly drones that have not been flown in a while? What pre-flight checks should they conduct to ensure safe operations? Today's question is from Adam, who would like to know what pre-flight checks are required for his drone that's been on the shelf for a while. Our show today is different from usual shows where we answer questions from pilots who possibly use their drone quite actively. However today, we focus on the drones that haven't been flown in a while and the critical things that pilot need to keep in mind when using them. We start off with a discussion about the most critical part of the drone that might have been impacted from long disuse and that's the batteries. We elaborate on battery checks that pilots must undertake to check worthiness. We then begin discussions on 2 aspects of a drone - the hardware and the software side of operations and pre-flight checks. We discuss firmware checks, how some of the older drones have unique differences in terms of their firmware and how the recent developments in the drone world can impact such firmware updates. We delve into critical components of the drone such as motors, props, and mechanical motions of the drone. From a software perspective, we discuss about software updates to apps, controller options and other third party applications that have had their fair share of developments. Lastly we summarize all the pre-flight checks that a drone pilot would need to conduct for drones that haven't been flown in a while and present workflows for pilots to follow. Whether you have a drone that has not been in use for a while or if you are planning to 'store' your drone or if you intend to understand how developments in the drone world can impact your drone and operations, this is one episode you don't want to miss. As drone hardware reaches a plateau, can developments in Drone software drive the industry forward with new applications for drones? Today's show addresses a critical question which is if developments in drone software can lead to new developments and applications in the drone industry? Our caller for today, Chris, would like to know what the future hold for drone software development and if this can lead to new applications for drones. An excellent question relevant to today's state of the drone industry which has seen hardware levelling itself in terms of drone configurations, parts and build. In our answer to Chris' question, we start off first by listing current hardware in the drone world and its development in the last decade while also expressing our view on how most drone software development companies have had limited impact in driving new applications. Next we look at the automotive industry history as an analogy to the drone industry and how the automotive industry in its formative years started with many manufacturers but ended with only 3 manufacturers. We then look into several drone applications that can rise due to software development which include autonomous flights to day-to-day community work. Lastly we analyze where software can take the drone industry forward and review some current jobs that might be replaced by a drone should the software support it. Today's question for the day is from Robert who would like to know some ways by which he can enhance his knowledge about an industry and stay better informed about the problems faced by the customer. We discuss if there is one single way to understand an industry or domain in the drone industry and if pilots can actually use one common methodology to identify customer pain points. While we do agree there is no secret sauce to do this, we address today's question by what it really means to understand customer pain points and how pilots can go about doing this. An integral component of understanding customer pain points involves actually having conversations with customer and we address how pilots can effectively performing this action in a domain of their choice while also highlighting how these help an individual better their skills, their business and their overall outlook in front of their customers. We then provide Paul's experience of interacting with an inquisitive individual who came across on the field to enquire about the drone industry and we also share Drone U's Kevin who started his drone business and how he was able to scale up to taking up projects for Amazon just by interacting and learning from his customers.
